The Irish-Language Literature Festival (IMRAM) continues with three events this weekend:

The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The Irish Sangha Trust is inviting to a Weekend Meditation Retreat with Sister Brahmavara on Sat and Sun from 09:30-17:30.

Donations are appreciated, but there are no fees.

The Belgard Weekend Market is an indoor market with stalls with handcraft (incl. designer jewellery, aran jumpers and wool, christening robes and shawls, cards and cross stitch), household items, bric and brac, furniture, flowers, make-up, clothes, shoes, showers, upholstery, toys, kitchens, cafe, army memorabilia, collectors items, sweets, handbags books, blinds, party shop, tools and more.

It is open every Saturday and Sunday and is located in the Glen Abbey complex (opposite Jacobs) on Belgard Road.

Jamestown Flea Market + Car Boot Sale takes place every Sat+Sun from 10:00-17:00. You can reach it from Tyrconnell Road and from Kylemore Road and it is within 3 min from Black Horse stop on the red Luas line. There is free parking.

The Merchants Market on East Wall Road is a weekly indoors flea market on Saturdays and Sundays with more than 80 stalls in a big industrial hall. There is everything from furniture and antiques to paintings and mirrors, electronics and hot food to bicycles and buns. It is just a few minutes walk away from the Point Theatre/O2 (walk in the direction of the Port Tunnel).

A new market (flea/vintage/etc) with two cafés has opened in the same location in Thomas Street where the Ferocious Mingle Market was before their move to Camden Street.

The new market in 72 Thomas Street is called Stable Market and it is open from Thursday until Sunday from 10:00-18:00 every day. It seems there is neither a website nor a Facebook Page yet.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

At the Blackrock Market in the centre of Blackrock, you’ll find 50 stalls selling collectibles, antiques, handmade goods, books, food & there’s free popcorn, ballons & facepainting for the kids.
Open on Saturdays and Bank Holidays: 11:00-17:30, and Sundays: 12:00-17:30.

Dublin Zoo is taking the “Month of the Elephant” celebrations outside the zoo and will be on Barnardos Square for a Family Fun Day and an Elephant Trail throughout the City on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free.

The Elephant Trail is a free treasure hunt style event and you will learn lots of interesting elephant facts along the way. The Elephant Trail will end at Barnardo’s Square where a family fun Elephant Extravaganza will take place featuring keeper talks from the Dublin Zoo elephant team, face painting, elephant arts and crafts and more. Every person who hands their completed trail in at Barnardo’s Square will receive a “Child goes Free to Dublin Zoo” pass.

The Irish, Spanish and Latin American Literary Festival (ISLA) will run from 17-19 October.

“Open House Dublin 2014” will take place this weekend! It is a really great festival that gives us an opportunity to visit buildings that are normally not accessible and to learn a bit more about the architecture of these buildings.

In previous years I visited Liberty Hall and Busaras, two of the buildings in Dublin that are considered by many to be “ugly”. But when you hear what the architects had intended and why the buildings now looks totally different than originally anticipated (particularly Liberty Hall), you will see these buildings in a new light and you might even appreciate them.

Over 100 buildings will open their doors on Saturday and/or Sunday and you should plan ahead where you want to go.

The Ferocious Mingle Marcade (Market and Arcade) is back in a new location. The Marcade is now in Camden Street next to Daintree Paper and opposite the Centra and off-license there. It takes place every Thurs-Sun and is a flea-market-type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. Grand Social’s Bar and Gourmet Coffee options are available.

Singer & Songwriter Mary Black wrote her autobiography “Down The Crooked Road” that tells the story from Mary’s earliest days, born into a musical family, learning to sing in her childhood, and making her first appearances in the pubs of Dublin.

She will in Dubray Books for a Book Signing. Admission is free.

Archive at Lunchtime screenings take place Saturdays (Double Bill), Mondays and Wednesdays. The programme is changing weekly now (instead of monthly as in the past). The In Focus Tour “Art of Edo Japan” with Diana Delia will take place in the Chester Beatty Library and admission is free. Meeting point is in the atrium of the Library. Limited to the first 15 people.

“These Are a Few of My Favourite Things” is the title of a Walking Tour that Emily Gallagher will run every Saturday. It will be an Alternative Arts and Culture Trail and she will bring you to “Dublin’s Best Cafes, Bars, Markets, Unusual Stores, Galleries, Theatres, Arts Spaces, and more! And hear some tales you’ve never heard before!”

An Intercultural Tour in Irish with Community Ambassador Jack FitzGerald will take place and admission is free.

“Bubble Trouble” by Tom Percival might be the book that will be read, but the website was not working properly at the time of writing this and it wasn’t clear if that is a book from an event a few weeks ago or if it is the actual book that will be read.

This or another book for children will be read in 27 Eason’s stores all over Ireland. In O’Connell Street the reading takes place at 14:00. In the other Eason Stores, the times vary between 11:00 and 15:00 (see website below).

A protest by the the Kurdish Irish Society and Kurdish Solidarity Ireland against the attacks on the local population in Kurdistan and Kobane by ISIS takes place at the GPO. It is to raise awareness in Ireland about the situation there.

At the Short Film Event in the Hilton Hotel, a selection of short films from this year’s Fingal Film Festival will be screened. Every Sunday, the Merrion Square Open Air Art Gallery takes place. Up to 200 artists exhibit their paintings on the railings on three sides (West, North and East) of Merrion Square and you can just enjoy the exhibition or even buy.

The Brocante Market will take place on Sunday. It is a collection of antiques, furniture, vintage jewellery, collectables and curiosities from the past and present, second-hand, refurbished, antique and hand-crafted stuff for your house and garden. If you are an interior designer or just have and eye for style and are looking for a special piece or maybe a bargain then this is the market for you. The market is held every 3rd Sunday of the month. Admission is free.

The well known Palestrina Choir sing every Sunday at the mass in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. They sing complete masterworks by Mozart, Haydn, Dvorak, Palestrina, de Victoria, usually accompanied by Prof. Gerard Gillen on the organ, who often also plays a solo piece.

The Educate Together School in Glasnevin runs an Autumn Market this Sunday and they are looking for support. There will be arts & crafts stalls, food, toys, raffle, Bric&Brac and more. Kids are invited to come in their Halloween outfit and visit the Haunted House.

Admission to the market is NOT free, but the charge is just EUR 1 per person or EUR 2 for a whole family.

On Sunday it is Dress Up Day in the Botanic Gardens when everyone is invited to come in their Halloween disguises and have fun. View the pumpkin display and exhibition, help spin a giant spider’s web through the oak trees, and discover all about Magical plants when you visit the witches in their new house.

The Prize Giving for the Decorated Pumpkin competition will be at 15:00 in the Teak House. And there will also be a wide variety of maths demonstrations, puzzles, mazes, maths magic tricks, and much more.

The final event of Maths Week will also take place on Sunday in the Botanic Gardens: “Celebration of Mind” commemorates Martin Gardner (1914-2010), the American writer, puzzler, and maths populariser, who would have been 100 on 21 October.

“Made by Hand” or “Hecho a manos” is a new Sunday weekly market in Viva, Portobello with most things made by hand and some vintage clothing and curiosities too. Admission is free.

The closing event of this year’s Maths Week will take place in the National Botanic Gardens and is in parallel with the Halloween festivities there.

The Gathering for Gardner Celebration of Mind is an international movement to promote recreational maths. Martin Gardner was the worlds foremost populariser of maths and would have been 100 years old on the 21st October 2014.

Admission is free and the event is suitable for all ages.

An indoor market in Coolock with over 40 traders with a wide range of goods and a café on site as well.

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June.

The next concert will feature the Francesco Turrisi Trio.

Francesco Turrisi has been defined a “musical alchemist” by the press because of his wide range of musical influences and experiences. With the “Taquín Experiments” he creates an original musical language, drawing influences from baroque music, the traditional repertoires from the Mediterranean and contemporary jazz.

At this Drop-In Drawing Session with Artist Roxana Manouchehri, you will be guided in drawing and informal sketching based on a number of exercises in the CBL drawing pack, including line drawing, light and shadow, portraiture and perspective.

These are drop in sessions and do not require booking. Limited to 15, first-come, first-served. Suitable for ages 13+, free. Materials are provided but feel free to bring your own sketchbook. (Pencils only)

“Join MC ‘Wasps vs Humans’ for an open mic with a difference. Audience members drop themes in a hat. They’re drawn out at random. Poets seize the moment and recite a piece on the suggested theme.”

“The Vegetal, the Cursive and the Geometric: Three Aspects of Islamic Art” with Nateghe Moane is an English language tour focusing exclusively on the Islamic collection. Admission is free, but the tour is limited to the first 15 participants.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. At this Open House element for Families with children 7-12, you will learn about design for living with artist and architect Bláithín Quinn. It is an interactive workshop exploring the Pebbledash House installation on display in Clarke Square at the museum. You will creatre a conceptual living room for the future.

Beyond Pebbledash is a collaborative project between the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin City Council and Redrawing Dublin. Booking essential via 01 6777444, admission is free and materials are provided.

Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

Brian Keary is a classically trained guitar player who also has experience of different styles / genres of music ranging from ragtime and folk to baroque and contemporary. He will perform in Sweeney’s (Ground Floor) on Sunday afternoon.

House Dublin is a restaurant and bar in Leeson Street. On Sundays the Camembert Quartet is playing in their Glass House from 17:00-19:00. Admission is free.

The wedding and party band The LJJ Band play every Sunday evening in Café en Seine. Admission is free.

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Mass is back after the summer break and invites you to a Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church at the top of Gardiner Street near the junction with Dorset Street every Sunday at 19:30.

Rogério from the Brazilian dance project “Forró de Lampião” in Dublin tells me: Forró de Lampião is Brazilian music that has the same roots as Samba and there is a whole culture that has developed around “forro”. “Messages from the stars: on translating Galileo’s Italian” is a lecture by Mark Davie (University of Exeter) during the 14th Italian Language week (XIV Settimana della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo).

“In 1610 Galileo published an account of his astronomical observations with the newly invented telescope, in a short book entitled Sidereus nuncius (‘message from the stars’). Written in Latin, the international language of scholarship, the book was an immediate best-seller and established Galileo’s reputation in the forefront of European thinkers.Mark Davie’s presentation will examine Galileo’s reasons for abandoning Latin in favour of the vernacular, the qualities he aimed to cultivate in his Italian writing and the challenges his prose presents to a translator into modern English.”

Imitating a cookery programme, Dr Paul Dawson explains how the universe goes about cooking up the stars. From ingredients to finished item, the talk will give an insight into the process and will also throw some light on the methods used by researchers to figure out what we know so far about star formation.

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. Dr Leona McArdle will talk about Bray scientist RM Barrington’s work that led to the lighthouse keepers of Ireland collecting bird specimens from around the Irish coast. This special talk will explore and look at some of the rare and not normally displayed samples from this unique collection and discuss how they informed scientists about the migratory patterns of birds to Ireland.

Historian and TV personality Adrian Cioroianu, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, examines the last 100 remarkable years of Romania’s past in a roller-coaster journey that starts in the trenches of the World War I and ends in the corridors of Brussels. The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

Opening hours are Thu-Fri 12:00-19:00 and Sat 09:30-16:00.

The Bram Stoker Festival took the legacy of Dublin horror novelist Bram Stoker and his gothic novel ‘Dracula’ as inspiration for a whole range of events from large-scale spectacles including a gothic ball, to small performances in unusual spaces, along with a whole range of film and literary events. A good few events were free, but it seems ALL the free events for Friday 24th are sold out now and only tickets for non-free events remain. The festival club on Friday is in Alfie Byrne’s in the Conrad Hotel and tickets are not required for this free event, so you can still go to it and enjoy the spooky atmosphere.

I will include these events in the next Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), but you might want to check already what is happening, just in case more free events need booking and will sell out.

One event I would have entered (but I will be away next weekend) is the VampWire, a zip wire experience on Wolf Tone Square. The Ferocious Mingle Marcade (Market and Arcade) is back in a new location. The Marcade is now in Camden Street next to Daintree Paper and opposite the Centra and off-license there. It takes place every Thurs-Sun and is a flea-market-type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

BLOOD is the title of the new Science Gallery exhibition that will open on Friday and will run until January.

The Science Gallery describes:
“From stories of vampires, kinship and religious beliefs to cutting edge research in immunology and genetics, and bio-art works that use the medium of blood, BLOOD explores the mythical, cultural and medical aspects of this unique connective tissue.”

Admission to the exhibition is free, but this exhibition is for everyone over 15 years of age only.

A series of short talks from the artists behind the latest Science Gallery exhibition, BLOOD will take place. From vampires to T-cells, genetics to horror films, BLOOD SAMPLES will explore the art, science, and inspiration behind the show.

Admission is free.

“Altrove” is Roberto Bertoni’s new collection of short stories and a reading will take place as part of the Italian Language Week.

As part of an interntaional series of lectures the Bruno Groening Circle of Friends will be informing about a special path to health and happiness at numerous events in Ireland as well. Bruno Groening was a German “Miracle healer” who was active in the 1940s and 1950s.

He believed that health was the natural state of all living things and told his followers that one can maintain health and heal from illness by absorption of a Divine life force that he called “Heilstrom” (“Healing Stream”).

Two doctors will talk at the events in Ireland about the healings based on the Groening teachings. Groening himself died in 1959 only 52 years young from stomach cancer.

Planet Parade are performing in Whelan’s and admission is free.

“Electric Fridays with DUB” is a weekly gig/open mic night in the basement of The International Bar. Admission is free.

The Stillorgan Orchard has live music every Friday and Saturday. Many of the performers are established and very good bands. The upcoming gigs are detailed on the website below. Admission is always free.

“Ska ‘n’ Reggae” is the theme in the Dive Bar (downstairs in Turks Head) every Friday. The Bionic Rats play live and the DJs Tommy Rash and Fukszy are on the decks until late. Admission is free.

We Went Down And Knoxville Morning are performing on Friday and this is also the Fancy Dress Halloween Party Night at Mother Reilly’s, so make sure you dress up.

Left, Right & Centre will perform their Blues & Soul in Arthur’s Pub and admission is free.

The Guilty Party are back in Whelan’s with a free gig on Friday.

Go Swim and Galans will both be playing in the Night Howl slot in Whelan’s. Admission is free if you arrive before 22:30 OR if you sing-up for the guest list via the site below.
