The year is starting good. More and more events are appearing and I can already predict that we will be kept busy by all the great event organisers who run these free events. And on top of the free ones, there will be LOTS of other events as well. One interesting one that already seems to be super popular is an American Football Game in August. It is a league game, so not just a friendly and the two teams will come with lots of supporters from the USA to Ireland. I heard that Croke Park is already sold out to 50% and that many hotels are already full for that weekend. Who needs the Gathering anyway! ;-)

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

The number of events have increased again and in addition I got a good few mails during the week with advance notices for upcoming events. So the quite event period is coming to an end. What events should you then go to?

As I keep saying here: I can’t tell you what you should do, I can only tell you what I will (or would do). The purpose of including sooo many varied events here is to give everyone a chance to find something suitable, but I can highlight a few events for you:

The Re-Enactment of the Napoleonic Wars in the National Museum on Saturday sounds interesting. But if you are community-minded, the clean-ups everywhere (Royal Canal and Clontarf on Saturday and Grand Canal on Sunday) are playing with your guilt complex. ;-) Ohh, go to the Science Gallery if you haven’t seen the “Grow Your Own” exhibition. You only have one other weekend after this one!

On Sunday the only event that stands out a bit more is the Polish Christmas Charity event.

On Tuesday, I recommend the “Upstarts – Get your Business Fit” event from 16:00-19:00 if you are interested in running or starting a business and you can follow that with the Alchemist Cafe at 19:00. About Robots this time!

There are more interesting events, but I am sure you will browse anyway! :-)

Odd Weather

People in Ireland (locals and blow-ins!) are well known for their ability and propensity to talk about the weather and – let’s face it – it IS indeed an interesting subject. For example, normally it should be a good bit warmer here than in the South West of Germany, but during the week we had 9 degrees and in Germany it was 14 degrees. Odd! At least we can rely on one thing at the moment: Rain! :-/

But if the temperature gets to around +3 degrees in Dublin, we will hear about “arctic temperatures” and “freeeeezing” and “cold snaps” and other nonsense. Have a look at some areas of the USA and Canada at the moment to understand what COLD really means. Did you see the amazing pictures of the frozen Niagara Falls?

Interestingly, though, it seems that the US has the same problems with relativity when it comes to COLD. In L.A. people talk about freezing when the temperature drops below 20 degrees Celsius (approx. 70 deg Fahrenheit). Limerick City Of Culture, Rubberbandits, and the Limerick Post

This has absolutely nothing to do with Dublin, but I couldn’t keep it from you. ;-)

A lot is being written about Limerick at the moment. The whole “City of Culture” thing was a bit of a joke before it started. Every FOUR (!!) years, an Irish city will be somehow selected to be the “City of Culture” for a year. It is not the Olympics, just a few more cultural events in a small-ish city (Dublin will probably not be selected for a long while.), so we have to assume the four year frequency is because otherwise we would run out of Cities in five years. (Ireland has only 5 cities!! – Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Waterford).

When it started in Limerick the shambles continued. A Board of Directors with 9 members was appointed and a whole range of people were employed, which included an artistic director, two programmers, some other people and a CEO. I don’t get why this has to be run like a company (with an outrageous CEO salary of 120k), but that’s only one of many things I don’t get.

Anyway, the artistic director and the two programmers resigned just when the new year started and it all seemed to be over some disagreements with the CEO, who then also had to resign.

It’s a long story and you won’t stop being amazed and surprised about the twists and turns if you look into the details. But this is just the intro to the real story I wanted to mention:

On Thursday the Rubberbandits tweeted on @Rubberbandits: “The sh*t that we can get our local newspaper to print. This is why Limerick is great” and this was followed by the link www.limerickpost.ie/2014/01/09/rubberbandits-blame-the-curse-of-st-munchin/

If you want to have a good laugh or shake your head even more vigorously about how different people SOME people from Limerick are, check the article out! It seems that the Rubberbandits managed to get a journalist (!) of the Limerick Post to write an article about a totally nonsensical story of the “Curse of St. Munchin” that is the real reason for all the trouble the “City of Culture” experiences. Well done, Rubberbandits! :-) But Limerick Post? Seriously??

This section is intended to feature new startup companies and projects. Opportunities that people saw and that they chose not to ignore. I am, however, experiencing a little technical problem with this section, so for now I won’t be able to use it. I will keep you posted.

National Gallery of Ireland Exhibitions

National Gallery of Ireland, Clare Street, Dublin 2

The National Gallery is currently showing New Portraits (14 Dec – 09 Feb) and the yearly Turner exhibition in January “The Vaughan Bequest” (01-31 January).

From next Saturday you will also be able to see “Care of the Collection” (18 Jan – 30 May), a presentation of three paintings that were preserved by the National Gallery. You will learn how the preservation methods have changed over the last 100 years.

And at the end of the month “From the Archive: The Story of the National Gallery of Ireland” (30 Jan-14 Dec) will be added.

All exhibitions are free and the opening times of the Gallery are: Mon-Sat 09:30-17:30; Thurs 09:30-20:30; Sunday 12:00-17:30; Public Holidays: 10:00-17:30.

Dublin Tribal Spirit – Drumming Circle

“Dublin Tribal Spirit” is a weekly event that gives you the great experience of a drumming circle with african drums and authentic tribal rhythms. Tom and Sinead, who run that event are providing lots of drums for it and teach you the rhythms.

There is no formal admission charge for this event, but donations are expected. The organisers bring their own 20-30 drums to it every week, so they are looking for donations to keep the event going.

The Secret of Kells Exhibition

The Ark in Temple Bar always runs interesting events for children. But because they are usually not free, I don’t get a chance to mention them much here. However, for the next three Saturdays (and one Sunday) they will show the “Secrets of Kells Exhibition” and admission is free. The exhibition is suitable for ages 4+. It contains limited edition art prints of scenes from The Secret of Kells, the animated feature film by Kilkenny’s Cartoon Saloon.

There is also a screening of “The Secret of Kells” at 15:00, but there is an Admission charge of EUR 3 for that. Suitable for Age 7+

Over the coming weeks there are more interesting (but not free) events. If you have children, check them out. You might find something really interesting.

Grow your own….. – Science Gallery Exhibition

The current Science Gallery exhibition (25 Oct – 19 Jan) is called GROW YOUR OWN…. and is exploring synthetic biology and life after nature. How does the future of designed and artificially enhanced life look like? What possibilities are there.

This exhibition is very different from the previous ILLUSION exhibition. GROW YOUR OWN is a lot more scientific and very futuristic. Maybe you could call it “science and art fiction”? The exhibition is full of interesting ideas and concepts, but also contains eye-brow raising stuff like human cheese and self-diagnosing excr ement. Younger children will be lost in it, so it is more suitable for a slightly older audience (16+) in comparison to the previous exhibition.

As with all Science Gallery exhibitions, I definitely recommend visiting it, but this time you have to bring a bit more time to comprehend all 21 exhibits and you need to bring your curiosity for science. It is worth it, though! The great (and unique) thing about the Science Gallery is that there are always mediators there, helpers that explain every exhibit in simple terms.

His research is primarily in the design and control of autonomous robotic systems. He has built various robots, founded the Trinity Robotics Club and is very involved with Robotics Ireland.

HeadSpace was founded when a group of young people, some of whom had spent time in psychiatric wards, felt that there was a lack of appropriate reading material available and that a creative mental health magazine would give support and solidarity to patients.

At the launch event of Issue 2 there will be musical performances and readings from contributors. Issue 2 features 26 writers and artists from all over the country and even from America and Australia. The magazine is distributed for free in psychiatric wards and mental health resource centres.

The Temple Bar Trad Feast takes place again from 22-26 January and there are many free events and many non-free events part of the programme. However, the reason for mentioning it here is the extensive Family Programme that takes place. Many workshops and sessions for children are free, but require pre-booking. Dublin Mountains Partnership – Guided Walks

Dun Laoghaire MUCH better than Dublin?

Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council organises brilliant events throughout the year, year after year! And out of the 4 boroughs in Dublin I sometimes get the impression their trumping all the others, even Dublin City.

Take just the recent New Year’s eve:

Dublin City’s New Year’s eve event was a concert in the City Centre at a quite unsuitable location for an event like that with an admission charge that was quite high for the environment in which it took place (Outside, in winter, at a location where only a small minority can actual see the stage.). The performers might have justified the price, but the location didn’t. New Year’s Eve Fireworks? Not a chance! Sure there was one last year at St. Stephen’s Green, but now that the “Gathering” is over, let’s skip that quickly again.

Dun Laoghaire on the other hand, didn’t have a concert, but they also didn’t charge for a really nice Fireworks (actually there were two, one for Families with kids at 18:00 and a big one at midnight). Lots of people where at it and everybody enjoyed it.

A few other differences? Dun Laoghaire is really good at telling people what is taking place. Dublin is woeful and even I find it difficult to find out details about events.If Dun Laoghaire still had the Festival of World Cultures, the best ever Festival in Ireland, they would win hands down, unfortunately they did let it run out of control and then cancelled it without making up for the loss.

I could just be happy that there is Dublin and Dun Laoghaire, enjoy the events at both locations and leave it at that. BUT, there are big chances most likely taking place in the relatively near future that should concern us.

At some stage in the next 2 years or so, it is highly likely that there will be an elected mayor that will be responsible for all four Dublin boroughs (Dublin City, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, South County Dublin and Fingal County) and at that stage other functions and activities will be merged and lead by the new mayor. I am fully in favour of the change to a democratically elected mayor who will then be responsible to the people of Dublin (unlike the current system of City/Borough Managers and more or less influence-less Mayors who just need to be able to open shopping centres and switch on Christmas Lights).

But what will happen to the events in such a case? Will one of the four boroughs get higher priority? Will it lead to a reduction in events? Will the good people in Dun Laoghaire Events be replaced by the people who look after events in Dublin?

I guess we have to demand answers from the candidates for the role of mayor and then hold the new mayor accountable for his promises.
