Here it is, the new Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). There is nothing amazingly news this week. Again nearly 170 events, a whole variety of different event types and I feel there are more and more events every week. Not in absolute numbers, but imagine it was summer and a busy period. If in the slow period there are 170 events, what happens when it picks up again in spring? I tried to avoid that until know, but if the event list keeps growing, I will at some stage have to start selecting events. What do you think about that? The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.
Today I have a self-explanatory story for you. I am sure many of you have read that in the past, but maybe it is new for some or maybe you are reminded again of the best approach:
One day a farmer’s donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn’t worth it to retrieve the donkey.
He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone’s amazement he quieted down.
A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up.
As the farmer’s neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily trotted off!
MORAL :
Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a steppingstone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down
The Book Festival and the Science Week are still ongoing and have still a number of interesting events, so check them out for Saturday and Sunday. Apart from that, have a look for the Caribbean Christmas Experience. I will try to go there on Sunday. And – if this is your thing – I want to draw your attention to the fact that Amma is in Ireland again on Sat+Sun. (If it is not your thing, just ignore it! :-) )
The “Science behind the Scenes” events in the National Museum sound interesting on Saturday (and Sunday) and also on Saturday, the Print Museum Demonstration Day is worth a visit.
The new Science Gallery exhibition “Game” is starting this week and sounds interesting, but if you are busy with other things, you have still time until end of January to go there. Don’t forget it, though!
On Sunday “Saucy Sundays” celebrate their 2nd Birthday and have an outstanding line-up for their music event and also in the afternoon the Christmas Lights will be switched on in Henry Street, maybe that is something for you?
With soo many things over the weekend, I will only mention one talk during the week; The talk on Thursday about the future of our Agricultural Food Production sounds interesting. It says there “The amount of food needed to feed a growing world population over the next 40 years will equal the amount produced over the last 10,000 years. ” Wow!

Raffle for Scuba Diving and Phone
I don’t usually do that, but a few good friends will go to Haiti soon to stay in tents without water and electricity for two weeks to build houses with the Haven Partnership for people that are STILL living in temporary huts after the earthquake in Haiti more than 2 years ago. In addition to a week of hard work, everybody who is prepared to help, has to bring EUR 4,500 for building materials. So my friends have to raise funds and one of the ideas is a raffle. Dublin Event Guide Smartphone App
Did you try out the new smart phone app? I will leave this information here for one more week, so that everybody has seen it! :-)
“Dublin for Free” is the Dublin Event Guide on the go! It is a web app that works on most smartphones and will allow you to bring the “Dublin Event Guide (For Free Events)” with you when you are out and about. It will also allow you to check out the current events when you are away from your computer or when the e-zine arrives late AGAIN on a Friday evening.The web app works on Android and on iOS and you can directly access it by putting m.dublineventguide.com in your mobile browser. There is an app in the iOS store and it will be in the Google Play store in the next few days, but you don’t need to dwonload anything.
When you went to m.dublineventguide.com on your browser and you want to put an icon on your homescreen, just do this:
For iOS:
+ When you’re looking at a web page, just hit “+” and select “Add to Home Screen”.
For Android:

+ Go to the home screen you want to add the link to

I will exlain a few features in the coming weeks, but for now, I suggest you check it out and explore it for yourself. The web app will not replace the weekly newsletter, instead it will complement it and will make the Dublin Event Guide better usable.
This wonderful app was created by iQ Content for free for you!! iQ Content is a user experience design consultancy. They design and build digital experiences for mobile, tablet and desktop that help clients achieve results for their business. And the great people in iQ Content are Dublin Event Guide Users, but wanted to make it more usable and mobile, so they created a wonderful new design, built a backend, beautified the e-zine AND wrote an app for us, Absolutely amazing! And all that for you for free. These events are not free, but if you are the parent of a baby/toddler/young child and you want to introduce your offspring as early as possible to art or music, then check these courses:

You might think that it is too early to introduce a child of 3 months to music or 18 months to art, but let’s face it, they have to listen to your music at home so you might have introduced them already a lot earlier than 3 months! :-) And as long as it is play and no stress for kids, I can only see advantages. Parents of small children sometimes ask me what to do with their kids, so here you have a suggestion (even if it is not free).

Odeon – Reopening
After a very very long and unexpected time of closure, the Odeon in Harcourt Street has shown a pulse again. On Thurs 22 Nov it will re-open again and is allegedly all refurbished. Whatever they did, it took them a VERY long time, so it must be something amazing! www.facebook.com/TheOdeon

Green Eggs and Ham: A Dr Seuss Exhibition

White Lady Art exhibits the interpretation of fourteen artists of the words and art of Dr Seuss. Entitled “Green Eggs and Ham”, this exhibition explores the dark and surreal side to the stories, the characters and bizarre situations, and interesting parallels that can be drawn today of social priorities and the absurd parodies found in his tales.
There will be TWO exhibition launches for this show. One is for kids (accompanied by an adult) on Fri 16 Nov from 15:00-16:00 and there will be a very special guest speaker (eccentric storyteller, Dominick O’Cruadhliocht) who will read them a story by Dr Seuss. Unmade

In her exhibition “Unmade” Isabel Nolan refers to documentary material from the Prinzhorn Collection in Heidelberg/Germany.
In 1894, on at least two occasions, a resident of a psychiatric hospital in Heidelberg, Germany tore up her bed clothes and made a carpet of sorts from the torn up textiles.
For this exhibition the gallery has been painted to match the colours of the stairwell and landing of the Goethe Institut. The sculpture is presented largely unassembled but is accompanied by a series of photographs which document the piece laid out in several of its possible rug-like arrangements and a new text by Nolan.
On 11 Dec at 18:00 Vaari Claffey, Isabel Nolan and others will present an illustrated conversation to accompany the work.

100 Objects

Fintan O’Toole has chosen 99 remarkable objects, each of which opens a window on to an important moment in Irish history. You are invited to help choose the 100th object. Most come from the great trove of the National Museum of Ireland, a resource that is itself one of the wonders of Ireland. Others are from a variety of other institutions. They are not intended to be the 100 most remarkable objects on the island, or even to be a representative sample of the great collections. They are chosen simply for their ability to illuminate moments of change, development or crisis.
The exhibition in Collins Barracks shows the 10 items shortlisted to be the 100th object in the series. There is a public vote online (100objects.ie) and a ballot sheet in the Museum where you can help to choose which object defines our modern times.

The Ferocious Mingle Market

The Ferocious Mingle Market takes place every Thursday, Friday, Saturday AND Sunday. On Sunday it is a fancy dress market. It’s a flea-market type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders. The Oscar Verne Café and (at least at the weekends) live music adds even more character.
The location of the new indoor market is 72 Thomas Street (between the Vicar St venue & Cafe Notto) an opening hours are 11:00-18:00. There is also a Café, the Oscar Verne Café, open for business at the market.

Amma, sometimes called “The Hugging Saint” is a Hindu spiritual leader and humanitarian and she travels the world hugging and speaking to followers and anybody else who is interested. Thousands of people come to her events and she takes the time to hug every single one of them, often working through the night until early morning. Nearly everybody who has met her has been touched by her warmth and generosity in some shape or form.
Amma will be in Dublin again on Sat + Sun and the event will start at 10:00 and will continue until well after midnight. (Doors will be open from 08:30.) On Saturday there will be a meditation with her at 10:00 and she will talk and sing from 19:30-21:00. After 10:00 and after 21:30 she will meet people. On Sunday the inspirational talk will take place from 18:30-20:30, the rest of the programme is the same as on the Saturday and Amma will meet people until early morning again.
The programme is free and open to all. Tokens will organise the long queues a little and the tokens are available one hour before each programme on a first come first served basis.

“Every object that ends up in the Museum has had a journey before it got here – but whether it was dug up from a bog, rescued from an attic, discovered on the bed of a lake or bought at auction – before any object goes on public display at the Museum, it must be assessed by a Museum conservator.
We’ve invited our conservators to come out from behind the scenes – come and meet them to hear some of their fascinating stories about the conservation of objects as varied as the Asgard yacht, a medieval book shrine, a Bronze Age food vessel, a Mesolithic fish trap and an Indian curved sword.”

Fun Mini Triathlon – Dun Laoghaire

Probably the smallest, easiest and most fun Triathlon takes place this Saturday. It is the Fun Mini Triathlon organised by the Forty Foot 11 O’Clock Club and it is a fundraising event for the Irish Cancer Society.
There will be 300 people taking part. A Dip in the cold Irish Sea at the Forty Foot, a Run (walk) to Teddy’s Ice Cream Parlour and a Cycle in to Dalkey village is the challenge for the day. There will be no Stop Watch, no racing, just fun.

With traditional musical instruments the Semaa will take place in which various inspiring texts will be sung. This will be done in the form of Qawwali, a Sufi Islamic devotional music from the Subcontinent which is means of meditation on God through focusing on melodies and inspiring texts. Also the African Sufi Nasheed will be sung. Please feel free to bring friends along.”

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Dublin is stretching the Christmas Lights celebrations over three weeks and I think that is a good thing. Last Thursday the lights were switched on in Grafton Street and South William Street. On Sunday it is the turn for Henry Street and North Earl Street. But the biggest event is another week away and will bring us then right up to the proper time when Christmas should start: On Sun 25 Nov the Christmas Lights and the Christmas Tree in O’Connell Street will be switched on. Keeps the kids (and parents) busy for three separate events instead of rushing all in one day.
The lights in Henry Street will be switched on at 16:30 and at 17:00 North Earl Street will see the light.

Climate Change- Ireland’s Place in the Polar Plight

Eimear Carlin, the Alliance Française Dublin Receptionist, has been selected as the only Irish representative (and one of only 10 people) on the 2041 Antarctic Youth Ambassador Programme. She will be taking part in an International Antarctic Expedition in February 2013 with renowned British Explorer Robert Swan OBE (first person to walk to both the North and South Poles). When she returns, Eimear will be working in schools around Ireland promoting sustainability and combatting climate change.
By the way “2041 Antarctic Youth Ambassador Programme” is not a typo. The 2041 refers to the year 2041 in which the Protocol on Environmental Protection to theAntarctic Treatycould potentially be modified or amended. This protocol currently prohibits drilling amining in Antarctica.

Why does Christmas come earlier and earlier??
I am puzzled! Every year, Christmas starts earlier. The shops bring out the Christmas decoration earlier and earlier, the lights will be switched on earlier and Santa soon will come in August. All this is clearly driven by shops and therefore by money. But WHY do the shops do it? And I am genuinely puzzled!! It is not that there will be MORE Christmases if you already sell Christmas Tree Decoration in September. And I won’t buy more presents either if the Christmas Lights are already switched on in early November. Maybe some will eat a few more Lebkuchen (German Christmas Biscuits that you get in Lidl and Aldi) and maybe children insist on going into Santa’s Grotto twice in the looong run up to Christmas. But does that really make the big difference? Christmas is a one or three day event and no matter how early the shops start Christmas, there will be no more Christmases in one year. Odd!! Can someone explain to me what I am missing?
Put up a little sign and nobody will break the law! – Yeah right!
All problems of traffic authorities, the police and the tax authorities are solved now that Fingal County Council made a ground-breaking discovery that was suggested to them by the Garda Siochana.
Many children playgrounds in Ireland are badly affected by vandalism and anti-social behaviour. Just recently a newly installed slide that cost EUR 70k was destroyed by youths just a few days after it was installed. In Fingal County (i.e. North Dublin) this is no different and people were trying to find a solution. Nothing seemed to work until Fingal County Council received this ground-breaking suggestion from the Garda Siochana: The super smart suggestion is to install signs on the playgrounds that say that playgrounds are for children under the age of 12 and that no one is permitted to access them after dark.
If they only could have thought of that earlier! All that is needed is a sign and all problems are gone! Great solution!
We should maybe epand that scheme and – hmmm – maybe put up signs that say “Don’t steal” or “Do pay your taxes” or maybe even signs (I am sure nobody every thought of that before) that say “Drive only 50km/h”. Wouldn’t that be an amazing idea?
The clever Mayor of Fingal seems to agree: “The news was welcomed by Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Cian O’Callaghan (Lab) who, […] said he was “delighted” that there will be a scheme put in place. “It is what the local residents have asked for and what the local Gardai have recommended as well. It will be a deterrent, not a massive deterrent, but it will be clear that the playground is not for use after dark or by people other than children,” he said.
No more vandalism on play grounds and loads of other problems are solved now as well. A sign!! Brilliant idea!
