Hi all!

This is an interesting weekend and upcoming week. The week is spookily quiet. There are a number of events, but definitely a lot less than normally. However, the weekend is probably one of the busiest of the year. The main event is the Street Performance World Championship in Merrion Square. The most popular event in Ireland behind the much more fragmented St. Patrick’s Day Festival, so as a single event, I would say the Street Performance World Championship is the single most popular festival. And despite that there is still a surprisingly large amount of people that have never heard of it. This is strange and I hope you – as a person “in the know” – will help spreading the word further. Tell your friends about the festival or even better, just bring them with you. Saturday and Sunday in Merrion Square, you will love it! See you there! :-)

The other festivals, on the same weekend are the Rose Festival (combined with the Viking Festival) in St. Anne’s Park, the Bray Summerfest with the great Bray Air Display and there is also the much smaller, but in its 42nd year very well established Liberties Festival.

So make the most out of the weekend! It will be a good one – as long as you go to the Street Performance World Chamiponship! :-)

After nearly finishing the Dublin Event Guide this week, I had an Internet outage for more than an hour, so I am running a little late again, but I will send it out soon, even if one or two (less relevant) events will be missing.

Because of that, I didn’t include the National Museum events (www.museum.ie/en/list/calendar-of-events.aspx) and the National Gallery events (www.nationalgallery.ie/whatson). I will again next week.

And again: Tell your friends (when you tell them about the Street Performance World Championship) about the Dublin Event Guide as well. They can easily subscribe on www.dublineventguide.com or on the Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide and people can (and should) also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide on the Facebook Page.

We are more than 9100 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide With your help, we will make it to 10,000 in no time! Join in and click LIKE on the facebook page and tell your friends! You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page and you can share your free events directly there with the other people in the Dublin Event Guide Community.

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive!

Last week Stephen Covey died. He was an American educator, author, businessman and motivational speaker. His best known book was “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Seven_Habits_of_Highly_Effective_People), which was sold 25 mio times worldwide! Covey was 79 and fell of his bike in April and it seems that his death had to do with the injuries he get when he fell. He was really a great teacher and in memory of Stephen Covey, today’s motivational video clip is Covey explaining the first of his 7 principles: www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8LM4C1l70U And after that you should watch this one www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLVg5ZKA3_I, which is a strong reminder of the importance of prioritising the important things in your life.

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

Last week Susanne B, Lorraine F, Fionn O’D, Frances K were the wonderful people who helped the Dublin Event Guide by supporting it with a donation. Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed to ensure that you all will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter has more than doubled and I need your help! Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm and help!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost (I need about 4 donations every week for that) a or even to improve the Event Guide (anything above 4 donations).

I am giving 25-30 hours every week for no pay or reward, so that you get the Dublin Event Guide every week. And all I ask for is just 25 cent per week from you or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!? :-)

BTW: If you think that funds from advertisement should be enough because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY after clicking or if you buy at a later stage without using the links in my ads, I get nothing. So it helps if you use the links I provide every time you want to purchase something. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal/CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This week, I will keep this section short. You know already what I will hotly recommend to you. ;-) Go to the Street Performance World Championship! :-D But there are more events and I am torn! The Bray Summerfest will put a trump forward with the Bray Air Display and I like the relaxed atmopshere of the Rose Festival. So they are both also worth going. But in the end it will be Merrion Square for me on Saturday and Sunday and am soooo looking forward to it. See you there!

Competitions

The Dubliners Dilemma – Play – Ticket Competition

The Dubliners Dilemma is a high-energy adaption of James Joyce’s “Dubliners” and is currently running in the City Arts venue at 15 Bachelor’s Walk, Dublin 1 as lunchtime theatre from 13:08 (sharp!) until 14:00. I only found positive reviews and since it is coming to an end soon, you better hurry if you want to see it. Tickets are normally EUR 12, but if you look around a bit on the website (Check out bachelorswalkdublin.com/tickets-and-booking/) you will find tickets for just EUR 9.

Four readers of the Dublin Event Guide will do even better and will get tickets for free. I have two pairs, one pair for Tues 24 July and one for Wed 25 July. If you want to win a pair of tickets, you have to send a mail to me with DILEMMA in the subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. In addition I need you to tell me if you want tickets for 24 or for 25 July and you also have to answer a question:
James Joyce first submitted ‘Dubliners’ to the publishing house of Grant Richards with the immortal words, ‘I do not think that any writer has yet presented Dublin to the world’. In what year did he write this? Hint … if you check out www.bachelorswalkdublin.com/ you might find a clue in the top right hand corner … and lots more info about the show. So make sure you write that answer in your mail as well and send it to me before 12:00 on Monday 23 July.

And just one critique for your information: The Metro Herald wrote “Gorman holds the audience enraptured throughout with a truly mesmerising performance. His adpatation is by no means exclusively for die-hard Joyce fans, making a brilliant introduction for newcomers.” So, send your entries to me!

8 Week Creative Writing Course – Competition

Last chance if you are interested in writing:
What a great competition I have for you today: Creative writing teacher and Dublin Event Guide Subscriber Yvonne Cullen and her Writing Train workshops are offering you an exclusive opportunity to win one free place on her 8-week Start to Write course, starting on 31 July in the United Arts Centre, Fitzwilliam Street, Dublin 2. This free place has a value of EUR 215 and is only being offered to the Dublin Event Guide Community! To enter the competition, email Yvonne at writingtrain@gmail.com with the title of two recent posts on her Creative Writing Blog, www.yvonnecullen.wordpress.com and also add in your email in 40 words or less why you would enjoy this prize. Deadline for entry is Thursday 26 July at midnight and the winner will be notified by the morning of Sunday 29 July.

To be in with an extra chance to win, LIKE Yvonne Cullen’s Writing Train on facebook, the page where Yvonne posts tips straight from her classrooms, and share this link with your facebook friends:
yvonnecullen.wordpress.com/2012/07/10/writing-train-beginners-classes-tuesday-night-8-week-course-starts-31-july/

If you can LIKE and SHARE as above, Yvonne will put your name in the hat twice. :-). Yvonne’s popular writing classes and workshops at the National Library Cafe in Dublin are also accepting summer participants for 8,7 and even 6 weeks’ membership, if you would like to try out a creative writing class for a smaller than usual fee (EUR 185, EUR 165 and EUR150). Details are available on Yvonne’s blog where the Writing Train autumn schedule is also located. Autumn classes start from 05 September. And finally: If a writing holiday is what you’re looking for, Yvonne brings groups to Inishbofin Island in Connemara, to write, on 19 July and 13 September.

More competitions

There are a few competitions in the pipeline, so there will be more next week, but if you know someone who would like to get the word out about a product they are selling, put them in contact with me. Ticket competitions are great, but it would be nice to have a few more product competitions too. You can reach me on dublineventguide@gmail.com

Free Events in 2012 – More or Less?

With 120-160 free events every single week, it is nearly impossible to keep track of everything and to compare the number of events year on year, but half way through the yeart, it seems that there are definitely less headline events this year than in previous years. The bigger events that I am missing are the Maritime Festival along the Liffey, the SOGO Festival in the Soth William Street area, the Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Culture, Urban Garden at Smithfield and the differently named Summer Festivals that Temple Bar held every year. The Viking Festival at Wood Quay was merged with this week’s Rose Festival and Kings of Concrete will be merged with the Tall Ship Festival. There are a few new festivals too: The Ukulele Festival in Dun Laoghaire, DLR Fusion in Dun Laoghaire (a tiny “replacement” of the Festival of World Culture and in Dublin the once-off Tall Ship Festival. So the bottom line shows a loss, but luckily we still have the Street Performance World Championship and the Soul Festival and the Bray Summer Fest and the always busy Dun Laoghaire Events people, but it good amazingly quiet around the Dublin City Events department, in Temple Bar and in the Dublin Docklands.

O2 Closed for a While

It really seems that the “summer” affects some of the businesses severely: The O2 (or Point Theatre) will be closed from now until the 19 Sept with one brief interrruption of a single concert (The Black Eyes) on 22 August. Closing for 2 months can’t be a profitable thing for a concert venue. theo2.ie/

Let’s Walk & Talk – Weekly Walking Groups

In addition to the once-off Let’s Walk & Talk events, there are a number of weekly walks taking place in July (and in most months of the year). All Let’s Walk & Talk events are free and no advance booking is necessary and the walks last about 90 minutes. The weekly walks are:

Textadeal.ie – New Discount Buying website

Discount or Group Buying websites are everywhere at the moment. Nearly all of us have heard about Groupon/City Deals or Living Social. In addition to these two big ones, there are smaller and local sites that offer similar services. Now another new company has entered the very crowded market and they realised that they need to do things differently to be successful.

The newest Discount Buying Website is Textadeal at www.textadeal.ie/afflink/dublineventguide and their approach is indeed very interesting. The need to provide BIG discounts and on top of that having to pay from the discounted prize a sizeable commission is the biggest problems for shops, restaurants etc So the discount has to be more realistic and the commission has to be more moderate. Textadeal is doing that by reducing their involvement in the deal somewhat: If you want to buy one of the offers presnted on their website, you just pay 10% to Textadeal, then then send you a text message with a code and with that code you go directly to the shop/restaurant/service provider and pay the rest of the money to them when you get your service or product.

A new approach that provides savings to the customers but leaves a fair amount of money with the service provider and therefore is a lot more sustainable and repeatable. If Textadeal gets interesting enough offers on their site, it could just work! An Irish company with a good new idea: Check it out at www.textadeal.ie/afflink/dublineventguide and if you buy by clicking on this link, they will support the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), so everybody wins.

Opportunities

A number of companies have contacted me in recent weeks and I will start introducing a set of new companies here again from next week or so!

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

The first to mention here is the Dublin Sketchers exhibition and I have listed it in the main event section for the respective days. Check out Saturday and Sunday!

The exhibition will also be presented in Rome, Zagreb and Berlin. There is a special website open for all fans where you can put their own photo memories: fotoportal.poznan.pl/galeria/wspomnieniaeuro And some more information about the exhibition in St. Stephen’s Green is here: www.visitdublin.com/event/Kings_of_the_Craic

Liberties Festival

10:00 – 17:30, Sat 21 Jul

Liberties area, Dublin 8

I don’t know where exactly the boundaries are of the Liberties area in Dublin 8, but you could roughly say it starts a Christchurch and extends nearly to Kilmainham with the main area along Thomas Street, Cork Street and Meath Street. The Liberties Festival is one of the oldest Community festivals in Ireland. It started in 1970 and celebrates its 42nd year this year. The main day is Sunday, but there are two exhibitions in Saturday and some non-free events taking place.
The exhibitions are “Taking Liberties” by Shane McCarthy in The Gallery Zozimus, 56 Francis Street, Dublin 8. McCarthy’s photography exhibition shows the people and places of today’s Liberties. And the second exhibition is by graffiti artist Maser. He created a large scale outdoor portrait of Robert Emmet’s housekeeper, Anne Devlin. The portrait was created duringt he week and is being finished on Fri 20 July. It can be seen on the corner of Meath Street and Carman’s Hall.
For the remainign events (mostly non-free), like Liberties Cinema, Pool Competition and Music, COmedy and Literature in the Guinness Storehouse, check the Events Schedule at libertiesfestivaldublin.com/events/events-saturday-21-07-2012/

Yoga in Phoenix Park

11:00 – 12:00, Sat 21 Jul

Bandstand (behind the Tea Room, near the Zoo), Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

This will be the third year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From June until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com invites to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based. All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

Street Performance World Championship

12:00 – 19:45, Sat 21 Jul

Merrion Square, Dublin 2

The Street Performance World Championship (this year sponsored by Laya Healthcare) is – in my opinion – the best festival in Dublin. A full weekend of the best Street Performers from all over the world in Merrion Square with 16 performers doing their 45 minute shows numerous times throughout the day on 8 pitches, you have the opportunity to see 100 shows over two days and there are some AMAZING shows.
You will see Juggling, Sword Swallowing, Acrobatics, Magic, Beat Boxing and even a Human Cannonball. You will be wow-ed, amazed and you will laugh as much as you have never done before! So, whatever your plans were for this weekend, CHANGE THEM and make sure you will go to Merrion Square at least for a little while.

I have been a fan of the Street Performance World Championship from the first year and every year try to see as many shows as possible, but if you want to see all of them, it is 16 shows and unless you start already on Thursday and Friday, when the “warm-up” round takes place, the Saturday and Sunday will not be enough to see them all. So you have to choose. I can’t tell you who are the best, but I can tell you who I think you should definitely see.
If you only have 45 minutes, see the Space Cowboy. He is an outstanding performer who won the Championship every time he was in Dublin as far as I remember. If you have a bit more time, add Mario, the Queen of the Circus and the Piano Juggler to your plan. Of the performers I know, the fourth one would be the Magician Charlie Caper. But I have never seen the Human Cannonball and hear that Scott Jackson (Beat Box) and The Lizardman are well worth watching as well. This is my (long) shortlist for the moment, but the best is to try it out yourself!

The event is free, but the performers do this as their job, so they will invite you to reward them after their show when they hold their hat out for you to donate money if you liked the show. So, bring some money with you, they are definitely worth it!
You can download the timetable here www.spwc.ie/sites/default/files/timetable_Dublin.pdf or check it online at www.spwc.ie/dublin-programme
The festival is totally suitable for children and there will be a play area for children, food stalls and face painting and balloon modelling. Before you leave Merrion Square, vote for the best performance, your vote decides who will be the Street Performance World Champion 2012.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up

14:00, Sun 22 Jul

varies

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

LinkedIn for your job search – Career Direction and Development

13:00 – 14:00, Wed 25 Jul

Central Library, Ilac Shopping Centre, Henry Street, Dublin 1

“The Importance of LinkedIn for Your Job Search” is the title of the next talk in the Dublin City Public Libraries’ Career Direction and Development Programme. The Career Direction and Development Programme is a key Dublin City Council employment support initiative. Through a range of events, including lectures, workshops, information stands, helpdesks, displays and user education programmes, it provides concentrated support to the city’s residents, workers and visitors in sourcing employment opportunities, developing job-hunting skills, and adapting to career changes in the current dynamic environment.
The workshop/lecture about the importance of LinkedIn will be delivered by Caroline Matthews, Career Coach with www.careersource.ie. Admission is free, but booking is required via (01) 873 3996 or businesslibrary@dublincity.ie.

Hmm, “Importance of LinkedIn”? Interesting topic, but what if the answer is “It is not really important!”, which I think is the only correct answer in most cases? Amazing how many social media “experts” are of the opinion that their area of expertise is amazingly important for the world.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

Do not smuggle Kinder Surprise Eggs into the USA!

I picked up a story in The Journal.ie during the week that made me chuckle in disbelief: Two men from Seattle were held in a detention centre for two hours because they tried to smuggled extremely dangerous goods into the USA. It was not drugs or guns, no, it was the highly dangerous Kinder Surprise Eggs that caused the arrest. The two men were in Canada and bought Kinder Surprise Eggs to bring back to their families and friends. Border Agents found them in their car and because they are illegal in the USA, the two men got into trouble. Luckily they were let go with a warning after the two hours, but I am sure they were not too happy when they were detained. Amazingly the US Customs and Border Agency has released information that says that in 2011 the massive number of more than 60,000 Kinder Surprise Eggs was seized from traveller’s baggage and from international shipments. www.thejournal.ie/border-agents-bust-seattle-pair-for-smuggling-kinder-surprise-eggs-525509-Jul2012/ Sounds a little over the top, doesn’t it? The fear, by the way, is that young children could choke on the small plastic toys in the Kinder Surprise eggs and therefore it is illegal to import them. Crazy? Definitely from our European point of view! The eggs carry a warning that they are unsuitable (like MANY toys) for children under 3, but they are not illegal.

Now, can we throw stones or are we sitting in the proverbial glass house? Well, if you look at the once valid EU Quality Standards for Bananas, the rule that allegedly (but this is an incorrect interpretation) made bend bananas illegal ( eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=CELEX:31994R2257:EN:HTML ) from 1994-2008 you realise that we do very odd things as well on this side of the Atlantic. But, let’s face it, one oddness doesn’t make another oddness any better! ;-)

–Advertisement————————————

With this possibly being the busiest weekend of the year, make sure that you do NOT stay at home. Get out and enjoy the wonderful events Dublin has on offer. The weather might not be what we would prefer, but dress accordingly and make the most of life. Every day counts and this weekend you could enrich your life with the Street Performance World Championship or any other of the events. :-)

Have an event-ful weekend,

–Joerg

It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
