Hi all!

Brrrr! Cold out there, isn’t it? But we can’t really complain. I heard earlier that last night the lowest temperature in Germany was -23 degrees. And Germany is NOT Siberia, where extreme temperatures are totally normal! ;-)
No surprise that there are no outdoor events yet. If you went to last week’s Temple Bar TradFest you probably were wondering why a festival that is getting an increasing outdoor component is scheduled for January. I guess it all made sense when the TradFestival was an indoor affair only, but I would agree with you if you suggested that it should be re-scheduled.

[ad]

No matter when it will take place, this “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” will tell you about it. :-) Once-off events are relatively easy to keep track of. But the regular events are difficult! Event organisers are much keener to tell me about a regular event when they start it. When it comes to an end I rarely get a notification. As a consequence I rely on your help to keep them up to date. With the upcoming big Dublin Event Guide changes, I will most likely delete ALL regular events and then add the ones that I am certain about still being current. If you know about any of the regular events or even run one, let me know as soon as possible, otherwise you might not find your event anymore in the Dublin Event Guide. All confirmed events will then be added again bit by bit. I know this is not the ideal solution, but it is better than carrying forward incorrect/outdated information every week. I hope you agree.

I got some very good suggestions for Dublin Event Guide improvements and I am keen to hear from even more people. So, here is my appeal again: Send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject BETTER and tell me ALL the things you would like to see changed or improved. Don’t hold back, just tell me everything you would like to see changed. What would have to be done to the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” so that you would tell at least 5 more people about it and would ask them to subscribe too? Every mail will be entered in a draw for a pair of tickets for an upcoming BIG event. So it is definitely worth sending me a mail with your suggestions! :-)

If you think the Dublin Event Guide is soo useful that you already could easily tell 5 more people about it, then go ahead and don’t let me stop you! :-) Tell your family, your friends and colleagues or print this poster and hang it up in your gym, work place, local supermarket etc. www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive!
Sometimes changing the perspective helps to see if something that we think is BIG and BAD really is as relevant as we thought. Being in the middle of it makes it difficult to simply change its importance, but have a look at this video clip. We are tiny in comparison to our planet Earth and many of our “problems” are quite small in the context of all mankind. But now watch how big Earth is in comparison to the rest! Impressive! Maybe it helps occasionally to put things in perspective: Don’t sweat the small stuff! www.youtube.com/watch?v=58fs5yI8K9I

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

Last week Kiera M was the only person who contributed to the Dublin Event Guide. Her contribution is HUGELY appreciated, but one contribution in a week is unfortunately not enough. :-/ The donations are important to ensure that you all will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. If you have never helped with a contribution, ask yourself if the Dublin Event Guide has helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about or if it even helped you to save money…and then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm

To join the list of the much appreciated and esteemed supporters of the Dublin Event Guide, go to www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm I appreciate ANY help. EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost. – To cover the cost for this Event Guide, I need about 4 donations every week and to improve the Event Guide, I need another bit more.

I am giving 25-30 hours every week for no pay or reward, so that you get the Dublin Event Guide every week. All I need from you is to help with just 25 cent per week or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!?

BTW: If you think that I make money from advertisement because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY, I get nothing and if you don’t click on the link here every time you want to purchases something, I don’t get anything either. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

BOTHERED AND BEWILDERED WITH LIFE?
Are you bothered, bewildered or just bogged down with life at the moment? – Mary Keating, MA, trained psychoanalytic psychotherapist, is available for appointments in Custom House Medical Centre, IFSC or at 20 Lower Baggot Street. Please phone 01-6776253 or 0868783086 or email mkeating@iol.ie for enquiries or to make an appointment. Her fees are appropriate to circumstances, so talk to her if you could do with some help and support. www.agalma.ie/therapists/mary-keating
——————————————————–

To be honest, I find it extremely difficult this week to recommend any of the events. Not because they are bad events, but there is nothing really standing out. So instead of picking some of the events in this week’s list, I will suggest a few other things: On Saturday go to Temple Bar and go to the Temple Bar Food Market and the Designer Mart in Cow’s Lane. After that take the Luas and go to the National Museum in Collins Barracks. Even if museums are not your thing, have a look at one single room. It is the room with the Celtic High-Crosses. I was blown away when I went in the room the first time.

The Scared Harp Singing on Saturday sounds interesting as well, but I know that is not everyone’s cup of tea!

During the week, have a look at the interesting documentaries that Howard Linnane shows in his Picture Show on Tuesday and Thursday.

GET BACK – BEATLES STORY – TIVOLI THEATRE
A brilliant event is currently taking place in the Tivoli Theatre (www.facebook.com/pages/Tivoli-Theatre-Dublin/120319968080952) in 135-138 Francis Street! Get Back is a Beatles Tribute show, telling the story of the Beatles through their songs and audio visuals. The performing band is the absolutely outstanding Beatles Tribute Band “The Classic Beatles” and you really feel as if a Time Machine has transported you back to the REAL Beatles gigs. I saw the show last week and was blown away. Get Back will be in the Tivoli Theatre until 14 Feb nearly every night (not on Mondays) and I can wholeheartedly recommend this gig! Tickets are between EUR 20-28.50 and there is a special EUR 21 offer for Tues-Thurs tickets on www.tivoli.ie/ at the moment. The Tivoli Theatre is a perfect venue for such a gig and – I have to say it again – the band is amazing! The promoters made tickets available and they were won by Kevin Collins. Congrats!
If you would like to see the show, you still have until 14 Feb to see it, but it is getting busier and busier, so you better book as soon as possible: Book your tickets on www.tivoli.ie/ or by ringing 01-454 4472. It is a truly brilliant show! www.tivoli.ie/get-back-the-story-of-the-beatles/ and www.facebook.com/getbackshow

INTERNET CENSORSHIP IN IRELAND
Last week I reminded you of threat of Internet censorship in Ireland and asked you to sign the StopSOPAIreland.com petition if you agree. I can report that the number of signatures grew to 80,000. Not bad, but in a country with 1.5 mio households, I would have hope for even higher numbers. It is not too late yet to join the campaign by informing yourself in the first place and by possible signing the petition if you agree. Check the information here jrnl.ie/335983 and here www.stopsopaireland.com

MARCH & PROTEST AGAINST SOPA IRELAND
On Saturday at 13:00 a protest against the Irish law that effectively will lead to censorship will take place. Online, approx. 3800 people have said they would take part, however, experience shows that the number could be a good bit less. So, if you are around, consider joining the organisers. Meeting point is the Garden of Remembrance on Saturday. Find out all details here:

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 10,000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

HIDDEN CURRENTS – PRETTYVACANT
Set up in 2009 PrettyvacanT Dublin repurposes vacant properties as temporary exhibition spaces for artists. The current exhibition “Hidden Currents” by Niamh Heery takes place from 02-11 Feb (13:00-18:00 – Closed Mondays) in Unit 5, Sackville Place, Dublin 1
‘Hidden Currents’ is an exhibition by Niamh Heery uncovering the near-invisible movement of commodities across the great oceans of the world. Have a look at the website here www.prettyvacantdublin.com/content/hidden-currents-3-11-february-unit-5-sackville-place-dublin-1 Niamh Heery’s work looks really interesting and I will try to see the exhibition.

TRAITS-PORTRAITS – DIVERSE ITALIAN IDENTITIES IN IRELAND
A visual art exhibition of portraits that reflect the diversity of Italian identity in contemporary Ireland will be on display in the Istituto Italiano from 09-23 Feb (Mon-Fri: 11:00-19:00). Inspired by the 150th anniversary of the Unity of Italy this visual art exhibition presents an insight into the broad range of Italian professionals who live and work in today’s Ireland. Strangely and surprisingly, though, the exhibition only looks at NEW Italian’s in Ireland. All the first generation Italian’s (including the owners of chip shops and older restaurants etc) are seemingly not included.
The portraits are by photographer Veronica Vierin, who lives and works in Dublin, and is comprised of photographs and a continuous video collage representing the varied experiences of Italian professionals living and working in Ireland.
The Italian Institute of Culture is at 11 Fitzwilliam Square East, Dublin 2. More info

INTRODUCTION TO SACRED HARP SINGING – WORKSHOP
Sat 04 Feb: 11:30-16:30 – Franciscan Friary, 4 Merchants’ Quay, Dublin 8
The workshop “Introduction to Sacred Harp Singing” will take place on Saturday and sounds intriguing. Sacred Harp is a uniquely American tradition that brings communities together to sing four-part hymns and anthems. It is a inclusive and democratic part of shared cultural heritage. The tradition is a living, breathing, ongoing practice passed directly by generations of singers. All events welcome beginners and newcomers, with no musical experience or religious affiliation required. The tradition was born from colonial “singing schools” whose purpose was to teach beginners to sing. Sacred Harp is not affiliated with any denomination, but it is a deeply spiritual experience for all involved, and functions as a religious observance for many singers.
Sacred Harp “singings” are not performances. There are no rehearsals and no separate seats for an audience. Every singing is a unique and self-sufficient event with a different group of assembled participants. The singers sit in a hollow square formation with one voice part on each side, all facing inwards so we can see and hear each other. Visitors are always welcome to sit anywhere in the room and participate as listeners.
There is no charge for the workshop but a small donation will be appreciated to to cover the costs of photocopying etc.
Have a look at the You Tube clip included on the facebook event page to get a better understanding. I was reminded of sea shanties when I heard the singing. Interesting! www.facebook.com/events/286989194690269/

SUPER BOWL XLVI
Sun 05 Feb: 23:00-03:00 – In a few pubs and in your living room
Super Bowl XLVI will take place at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana this Sunday. The Super Bowl is the American Football final and kick-off is scheduled for 18:30 Eastern Time, so if I calculate that correctly this is 23:30 in Ireland. The Super Bowl is a big show, not just an Amercian Football game and quite a lot of people are interested in it, despite the fact that it is not a very popular or even available sport in Ireland. The BBC will show the complete game, but the timing of it means that pubs regularly have problems with it. In the past the Woolshed on Parnell Street and a few other sports enthusiastic pubs (Sinnott’s? The Portobello?) have shown it, but the Woolshed is always packed (arrive no later than 21:00!) and I am still not sure what they do once pub closing time approaches. The Dublin Rebels, an American Football Team in Dublin, organise a party in the Capitol on Lower Stephen’s Street, but you have to buy tickets for it before the day. The “Democrats Abroad” run a Super Bowl Party as well (Arlington in Dame Street), but the tickets are pricey at EUR 20 and only Americans are allowed to buy tickets (but can pass them on to others), because it is a political organisation.
So after all this, the best solution still seems to be to watch it at home on BBC. Pity, but it could be worse: It could be on Sky Sports only! ;-)

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of one of the world’s greatest novelists, Laurence Foster has re-created Charles Dickens’ first public performance in Ireland.
“Dickens in Dublin” is a recreation of a dramatic evening in August 1858 when Dickens visited Dublin to perform here and found it difficult to make his way from Morrison’s Hotel (on the corner of Dawson St. and Nassau St.) through the crowds who were queuing to see his performance.

“How Migration Challenges Notions of Society, Education and Culture” is the title of a public discussion and lecture in the lecture series “EUNIC/UNIQUE Thoughts:
Public Discussions on European Issues”.
Ireland is one of just two EU countries that has a majority of migrants from the EU member states. The diversity and scale of EU migration is a recent phenomenon though there is a long tradition of migration to Ireland from some EU-15 states, especially the UK, Germany and France. Ireland has also become home to a range of people from outside the EU including Nigeria, China, India, Philippines and Brazil.
The lectures and panel discussions for each theme will assess how migrants are integrating in Irish society and in other European societies and will address the on-going impact of migration on these societies.
Over three events on 09 Feb, 15 March and 26 April this will be discussed.
The themes are
09 Feb: Theme 1: Migration, Education and Cultural Diversity
15 Mar: Theme 2: Children and Migration
26 Apr: Theme 3: Culture and Migration
All details about he lectures and discussions and a list of participants can be found on

Admission is free, but you need to register via 01-6024403 or rottke@dublin.goethe.org
Further details about the event this Thursday:
“One of the challenges that any migrant-receiving country faces is how to integrate newcomers into its education system and how to adapt education systems to deal with the newly emerging diversity. The aim of this theme is to consider how this question has been addressed in a range of national contexts and to learn from these experiences, paying particular attention to educational curricula, teacher training and textbook design.”

A DATE WITH DUBLIN – TEMPLE BAR & CITY CENTRE
14 Feb: 12:00-00:00 – Temple Bar and City Centre
The Temple Bar Cultural Trust is inviting to a whole range of events on Valentine’s Day (14 Feb). There are a few free events and some of them require prior booking. I will list all other free events in next week’s Dublin Event Guide. Make sure that you won’t miss out and check if you want to register for an event:
+ Hugh Lane Gallery: 15:00-17:00: A special Valentine’s Day tour of the collection and Francis Bacon Studio will take place. Admission is free, but booking is required. Check out: templebar.ie/EventsDetail/ADWD_DubCityGallery
+ ‘Love Sucks’ at Project Arts Centre: 17:30-20:00: Love Sucks are two interactive games and if you want to take part you have to book your place. Admission is free. Check the details on templebar.ie/EventsDetail/ADWD_Project

GOD AND SEKS: WHAT THE BIBLE REALLY SAYS – RIA
Thurs 16 Feb: 18:00 – Royal Irish Academy (Academy House), Dawson Street, Dublin 2. Apologies that I have to misspell the main word in the title of the talk. Where I wrote “seks”, there should be a three letter word starting with an “s” and ending with a “x”, that sounds like “seks”. If I properly spelled that word, you yould most likely not get this e-zine because all sorts of Spam-Filters would ruthlessly catch it.
This Academy Discourse in the Royal Irish Academy is entitled “God and Seks: what the Bible really says” by Michael Coogan. Coogan is one of the leading biblical scholars in the United States, Michael Coogan is Director of Publications for the Harvard Semitic Museum and Lecturer on Old Testament/Hebrew Bible at Harvard Divinity School.
Coogan has written many books about the bible and his newsest has the same title as he talk. Tthe Bible speaks with many voices, not one, and some of its values are no longer ours. A close look at the story of David and Bathsheba, one of the most famous and most ambiguous biblical narratives, will illustrate these issues.
It is another while until this talk will take place on 16 Feb, however Royal Irish Academy events are usually very popular and “sell out fast”. Admission is free, but you have to book your place for this event, so do it as soon as possible here

______This is odd!!______________

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this
section. ;-)

KILKENNY PEOPLE ARE ODD?? SOME DEFINITELY! ;-)
I know a few people from Kilkenny and I never thought they are particularly odd, but on broadsheet.ie my belief was challenged. In the Dylan Whiskey Bar in Kilkenny a George Clooney lookalike contest took place and a David James Glendon won. The odd thing? This guy has absolutely no similarity to George Clooney. Even odder: The newspaper “Kilkenny People” reported about this even, which should maybe rather be called “NOT-lookalike contest”. www.broadsheet.ie/2012/02/02/eh-11
