I mentioned a number of times that there will be some big news this year and it seems that we are on track with the biggest change (improvement!) of the Dublin Event Guide in the last 3 years. In addition to that big change, there will be some other news coming. One new thing will be that I will show my appreciation to all the people that have and will help with donations. The Chinese New Year Festival is the main event this weekend and I will try to go to some events. On Saturday the Telescope Watch of Astronomy Ireland interest me too and if you can’t make it on Saturday, you have the opportunity to go from Mon-Sat of next week as well.

On Sunday I will try to go to Kickstart 2012 in Dun Laoghaire, but I will have a rehearsal as well, so there won’t be much time. I am part of a backing choir for a band that prepares a two week run in the Tivoli Theatre and we have to prepare for it. (I will tell you more about this event in the coming weeks!)

On Tuesday there is another chance to experience the Lunchtime Concert of the National Symphonic Orchestra. On Wednesday the Temple Bar Tradfest will begin (more about that in next week’s Dublin Event Guide!). And finally Thursday. Thursday has surprisingly many different types of events. I don’t know why everyone seems to push their event to the Thursday. Considering that less events take place on Monday or Tuesday, they might be better days to get people!?
The event I picked out on Thursday is the lecture of the German Ambassador with the title “Europe will prosper”. Sounds interesting! But if you want to go you have to book your place TODAY (Friday!). Check the event notice in the Thursday section and send a mail if you want to go to that event!

COMEDY HAHA – MERCANTILE – TICKETS

LIGHTHOUSE CINEMA RE-OPENING
The Lighthouse Cinema at Smithfield Plaza has re-opened. It was an arthouse cinema until high rental cost forced it to close the doors in April 2011. The government, which had invested more than 1.7mio was looking for a new tenant and has now found a Element Pictures, who will operate the cinema from now. The article in the Journal.ie seems to indicate that the permanent opening is not yet a definite: jrnl.ie/329228 but the Irish Times doesn’t indicate that there are some question marks about he longterm future. However, it quotes the new operator who seems to indicate that the Lighthouse Cinema might enter the main stream cinema world as arthouse cinemas are challenged: www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2012/0117/breaking39.html Either way, I think it is good news that the Lighthouse Cinema got another chance!

350 YEARS PHOENIX PARK

The Office of Public Works (OPW) has announced its intention to run a number of exhibitions, competitions, lectures, workshops, a street party and other events this year in the Phoenix Park.

FIRST FORTNIGHT STREET ART – GOOGLE MAP
Remember the First Fortnight Festival that ran until 14 Jan and intended to “challenge mental health prejudices through creative arts”? Street Art was one of many components of the festival and at seven locations from the Camden St Simon shop down to the Quays side of Fitzsimons in Temple Bar these art objects can still be seen. A map has been compiled now so that you can find them easily. PETE THE DOG – MISSING DOG FOUND
Last week I included a search notice for Pete The Dog, the DSPCA rescued dog that found a new home with Linda and Tom after having been treated badly by previous owners. Pete had disappeared in the Dundrum area, but luckily he was found again and is re-united with his happy family. Thanks for your help!

CROKE PARK ROOF TOP TOUR
I only found out this week because the neighbours around Croke Park complained (www.dublinpeople.com/article.php?id=752&l=100): An Bord Pleanala granted permission for rooftop tours on Croke Park stadium. This means that tied to a harness (spoil sports!) soon you will be able to get on top of Croke Park at a height of approx. a 14-storey building. There will be five viewing platforms and the installation of the platforms will cost 1mio. From ticket sales (10-15 Euro per person) it is expected that a revenue of EUR 150,000 can be achieved, but if really 10 jobs will be created, then I don’t see how this whole project makes financial sense. They are worried about their privacy. As if anybody standing at a 14th storey level a) would be able to see any details on ground level and b) would be interested in the slightest if a neighbour is in his garden.
By the way, if anybody can organise some tickets for me, I will happily report back from the roof top tour once it is available! ;-)

MINORITY REPORT – VIETNAM – IRISH AID CENTRE
17 Jan – 27 Feb: 10:00-17:00 – Irish Aid Volunteering and Information Centre, 27-31 Upper O’Connell Street, Dublin 1. – This Photographic Exhibition documents the lives of ethnic minorities in Vietnam. The Irish Times photographer, Frank Miller, captures the lives of the Hmong people in Vietnam, one of Vietnam’s poorest and most isolated ethnic groups. Miller visited families, schools and education projects in the remote town of Dong Van, close to the border with China. His exhibition showcases the daily lives of the Hmong people, particularly school, community and family scenes. Admission is free. The Dublin Art and Technology Association (DATA) was formed in March 2002 with the intention of promoting, exploring, discussing, and exhibiting art and technology in Ireland and the world. Their upcoming event DATA 50.0 pays particular attention to the Sonic Arts, showcasing the intersection of practitioners across Digital Media, Electroacoustic Composition, Spatial Audio, Networked Performance and New Interfaces for Musical Expression. This is a good opportunity to see a diverse range of Dublin based sound artists talk through their practices, demonstrate their instruments, interfaces and tools, discuss upcoming projects and perform new work. CHINESE NEW YEAR FESTIVAL
The Chinese New Year is this year on Monday 23 Jan. The new year is the year of the Dragon, one of the most prestigious animals in the Chinese Calender. The Chinese Community together with Dublin City have worked hard and have put a great Chinese New Year Festival together. Some events are not free (e.g. Film Festival), but the majority of events are free and you can find all the information about the festival here www.cny.ie

ASIA MARKET – CHINESE NEW YEAR CARNIVAL

An Asia Market and Chinese New Year Carnival will take place on Meeting House Square. In this very special year a unique Irish dragon has been designed and produced at a Shaolin Temple in Hong Kong and brought to Ireland for the Year of the Dragon. A special performance by Yung Ling Academy will ring in the Spring Festival with a blessing of the dragon by a Shaolin monk and an Irish druid. The carnival will also include Chinese food and craft stalls, information booths, authentic Chinese performances with dragon and lion dances, tai chi and martial arts displays. Traditional and Contemporary Chinese music, dance and fashion will also feature during the day. Food stalls will sell Chinese foods, while the programme takes place.

Karen Power and Garrett Sholdice feature as ‘Green Shoot’ composers; Ronan Guilfoyle and Kevin Volans feature as established figures. Benedict Schlepper-Connolly, another voice from the younger generation of Irish composers, will also feature as will Michael Alcorn, Morton Feldman, James Tenney and Giacinto Scelsi.
Each of the featured composers can also be heard in conversation at 12:30 before his/her concert in Composers in Conversation with Contemporary Music Centre Director, Evonne Ferguson. For 5 days the Temple Bar Tradfest will take place in Temple Bar. Year after year the festival is getting bigger and better and this year there will be lot of family events and even outdoor stages with entertainment. The website is at www.templebartrad.com Unfortunately the organisers decided to use the awkward issuu reader to display the programmes instead of listing them in an easier readable way, but at least you will be able to get access to the information.
From Wed-Fri a few exhibitions will run already and the MusicTrail will already start on Wednesday. The main events will take place over the coming weekend and I will provide more information in next week’s Dublin Event Guide.

A Chinese New Year event entitled “Dragon Stories and Dance” will take place in a number of libraries on Wed and Thurs. Admission is free, but booking is required. The event is for children and is described as “Although dragons are usually associated with Asia, these mythical creatures can be found in fairy tales and folklore all over the world, including Celtic Ireland. On Fri 27 Jan at 18:00, the IMMA Chapel is the venue for a reading by actor Conor Lovett, who will read an excerpt from Samuel Beckett’s novella First Love in response to Neuenschwander’s artwork of the same title. GOD AND SEKS: WHAT THE BIBLE REALLY SAYS – RIA
Thurs 16 Feb: 18:00 – Royal Irish Academy (Academy House), Dawson Street, Dublin 2. Apologies that I have to misspell the main word in the title of the talk. Where I wrote “seks”, there should be a three letter word starting with an “s” and ending with a “x”, that sounds like “seks”. If I properly spelled that word, you yould most likely not get this e-zine because all sorts of Spam-Filters would ruthlessly catch it.
This Academy Discourse in the Royal Irish Academy is entitled “God and Seks: what the Bible really says” by Michael Coogan. Coogan is one of the leading biblical scholars in the United States, Michael Coogan is Director of Publications for the Harvard Semitic Museum and Lecturer on Old Testament/Hebrew Bible at Harvard Divinity School.
Coogan has written many books about the bible and his newsest has the same title as he talk. Tthe Bible speaks with many voices, not one, and some of its values are no longer ours. A close look at the story of David and Bathsheba, one of the most famous and most ambiguous biblical narratives, will illustrate these issues.
It is another while until this talk will take place on 16 Feb, however Royal Irish Academy events are usually very popular and “sell out fast”. Admission is free, but you have to book your place for this event, so do it as soon as possible here

NOISE SOUND MUSIC FESTIVAL – CLONDALKIN
Sat 18 Feb: Áras Chrónáin Irish Cultural Centre, Watery Lane, Orchard Road, Clondalkin, Dublin 22. Creative Young Musicians have the chance to perform on stage with true professionals: Irish musicians Colm Quearney, The Kane Sisters and The North Strand Kontra Band will work with and perform alongside young musicians (Age 13-25) at the NOISE Sounds Music Festival on 18 Feb.
From 15:30-18:30 free workshops will take place:
* Songwriting Masterclass with Colm Quearney (aka Q)
* Trad Session with The Kane Sisters
* Brass Masterclass with The North Strand Kontra Band
NOISE South Dublin are opening their doors to all musicians from all music genres, aged 13-25 to take part in the first year of this unique Music Festival.
From 19:00-21:00 a performance featuring The North Strand Kontra Band, The Kane Sisters, Colm Quearney and festival participants will take place. There is an admission fee of EUR 5 for this gig.

TURNING OF THE SEAL
Is this the oddest event of them all??? And do the Taoiseach, Ceann Comhairle and Chief Justice really witness that event every year? What would happen if they just decided not to do it anymore? OMG, would that mean Ireland would lose its sovereignty? I was not able to find any official notice of invitation to this event, but allegedly it is open to the public: Every year on 21 Jan at 12:00 the Irish Seal (which is an Irish harp) will be “turned” in the presence of the Taoiseach, Ceann Comhairle and Chief Justice. I know that every country has some odd ceremonies (e.g. the US flag ceremonies) and religious organisations are full of them anyway, but this ceremony seems soo archaic that it is just odd: The harp will be whiled around a few times and then declarations from 1919 will be read one after another after another. You would think that a modern state doesn’t need to repeat to declare its independence year after year after year! why – And why is the ceremony so little publicised? If it is meaningless then just forget about it. Based on the You Tube videos (search for “Turning of the Sovereign Seal” on You Tube and be amazed) the people that are involved take it VERY VERY serious. Odd! Maybe it is only some nationalist element that is so keen on this procedure, but then I wonder why the Mansion House is used for this event and why the mayor and possibly all the other three are present. www.irishpressreleases.ie/printer-page.php?p=15750
