Event Guide 160: Temple Bar Sensational, Toe Jam Car Boot Sale, Ferocious Mingle Market, French Week, Bastille Day

July 9th, 2010

Hi all!

When you are receiving this message, I am 1800 km away. Because of that I “pre-wrote” the Event Guide already last weekend and because at that point not all events have been publicised, this week’s issue will be somewhat slimmer. I hope you are ok with it for just one week and that you won’t miss your usual COMPREHENSIVE Event Guide tooooooo much. It will be back again next week. :-)

A good few sent me a mail and said they will miss the Event Guide, but that I should just take some time off. I appreciate your mails! But I just couldn’t leave you without an Event Guide, so I compiled one that at least contains the headline events. Better than nothing…I hope! ;-) After not having missed a week for 160 weeks, it doesn’t make sense to start now!
[ad]
In anticipation of the next FULL Event Guide you should tell your friends and colleagues about it! Let them know that to subscribe only a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com is needed. And this might help too: www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf
www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf

The “Feel Good Slot” this week is influenced by a terrible story a friend told me about a friend and colleague of hers. The details are not the relevant, but let me say that the detection of a serious illness and a sudden death in the family happened on the same day. So today I want to stress again how important it is to live life every single day instead of postponing life! Carpe Diem is the slogan to remember and many of you have seen that scene in Dead Poets Society: www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7Ntqg2BiVg

This week Ailbhe H. and Sandra R donated to support the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and this is hugely appreciated. If you want to support my weekly work too and want to make me smile ;-), you can donate here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent. ;-)

You can donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer money to my bank, just drop me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

BOTHERED AND BEWILDERED WITH LIFE?
Are you bothered, bewildered… or just bogged down with life at the moment?
Mary Keating, MA, trained psychoanalytic psychotherapist, is available for appointments in Custom House Medical Centre, IFSC or at 20 Lower Baggot Street. Please phone 01-6776253 or 0868783086, or email mkeating@iol.ie for enquiries or to make an appointment. Her fees are appropriate to circumstances, so talk to her if you could do with some help and support. www.agalma.ie/therapists/mary-keating
——————————————————–

Let me pass the “picking power” over to you this week. I am too far away to pick. ;-) But consider the Temple Bar Sensational (I would definitely be there if I was around and it’s a pity that I will miss it!) and the wonderful whacky Toe Jam Car Boot Sale and maybe the Bray Summer Fest towards the end of the week?!

______Competition______________

KWADROFONIK – SOUND EXPERIMENTS – TICKETS
Tonight (Fri 09 July) at 20:00 a concert with Kwadrofonik is taking place in the Banquet Hall at Smock Alley in 8 Lower Exchange Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 8. Kwadrofonik is performing an unusual and unique dialog between pianos and percussion and they will be in Dublin for the first time. Tickets are EUR 15/EUR 12 and are available on www.amiando.com/kwadro.html. In addition, the promoters, ArtPolonia and CFCP, have made TWO pairs of tickets for you to win. If you want to be in with a chance, you have to send a mail to the Centre of Creative Practices (CFCP) using the e-mail address dublineventguide@cfcp.ie Use KWADRO as the subject and make sure that you have your name and your mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Because the concert is already tonight, you need to be available TONIGHT and please don’t enter if you can’t make it to Temple Bar for 20:00 tonight. Your mail has to be with the CFCP by 16:00 this afternoon and you will be told before 17:00 if you have won. www.artpolonia.org/Kwadrofonik.html

WEDDING SINGERS – MUSICAL – CIVIC THEATRE TALLAGHT
The Greenhills Variety Group are staging the funny musical “The Wedding Singer” from Mon 05 July to Sat 10 July in the Civic Theatre in Tallaght. Tickets (EUR 15 / EUR 20) are available at the box office on 01-4627477 or www.civictheatre.ie.
The nice people from the Greenhills Variety Group have made a pair of tickets available for you to win and the lucky winner was Rachel Harmon. Congrats!

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

______Dublin News______________

UK TIMES CHARGING FOR ONLINE CONTENT
The Times in the UK has started charging for access to their website and I guarantee you that the Irish Times is watching this extremely closely. When the Irish Times started charging to read the newspaper articles online, I predicted that it will not work. Different to what I expected, they held out for quite long but in the end had to give up the charging model in 2008 (www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2008/0628/1214567648629.html) Since then they were eagerly trying to find a way to go back to a charging model and they started with the “ePaper” idea in March 2010 (www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2010/0326/1224267098653.html). But they will probably want to charge for more, so watch that space! Will it work this time? I don’t really think it will. But it will take the Irish Times a long time to realise that. www.breakingnews.ie/business/the-times-starts-charging-to-access-website-463907.html

OXEGEN – PUNCHESTOWN
This weekend I expect that many of you are away at Oxegen, one of Ireland’s biggest non-free multi-day open-air festival. More than 75,000 people will be at Punchstown Racecourse and I hope you will all have a great time. If you like open-air festivals, then don’t forget that this year’s Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Culture already takes place on the weekend of the 23-25 July, a whole month earlier than in previous years. www.festivalofworldcultures.com/

REDNECK GAMES IN DUBLIN
Online Event Guides can tell you interesting stuff! Every week I search approx. 200 websites to research all free events that are taking place in Dublin so that I can tell you about as many events as possible. One of the (not so useful) websites that I check every week is www.whatsonwhen.com. And when you check the “Dublin” section of that site (www.whatsonwhen.com/sisp/index.htm?fx=event.map&mode=advanced&search=&locsearch=Dublin), then you occasionally find some interesting references. As I said, it is not the greatest sites, but last week I found an event I had never heard about. Have you heard about the “Summer Redneck Games”? They are taking place on 10 July and I wanted to find out more. ;-) However, I had to find out that they are taking place in “East Dublin” and specifically in the “Buckeye Park”. Yes, you have guessed it, it is some different Dublin they are talking about. It is East Dublin in Georgia. :-) Ah well, it is not a free event anyway. LOL

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 6500+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

STAY HOME AWAY – SELF CATERING APARTMENTS IN DUBLIN
Rita Ryan informed me about the new venture she is working on. It is called StayHomeAway.com and is a service landlords and for visitors to Dublin. Stay Home Away rents out un-occupied apartments/houses to tourists or business people for short periods of time. This provides an income for the landlords who may be struggling with the mortgage and leaves them free to look for long term tenants and it provides nice apartments for attractive prices for visitors. Check out www.stayhomeaway.com to find out more!

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

KING RAT – PROJECT ARTS CENTRE
A dark and menacing exhibition, originally inspired by all things Gothic, King Rat presents a series of artworks by some of visual arts most original international voices. The gallery will transform in to a space filled with a sense of unease and discomfort, the stuff that nightmares are made of. A carpet made of thousands of black pieces of paper will create a striking landscape from which sculptures rise, paintings hover above, tapestries loom and text speak. The exhibition will be in the Project Arts Centre in Temple Bar and will run from 09 July until 04 Sept (11:00-20:00). Admission is free. www.projectartscentre.ie/programme/whats-on/1069-king-rat

PHOTOIRELAND FESTIVAL
PhotoIreland, Ireland’s International Festival of Photography and Visual Culture, is taking place from 01-11 July throughout Dublin. In the last years there has been an increase in the number of photographic exhibitions held in Ireland, and many museums and galleries have already planned very important exhibitions for the coming months. However, there is no single event in Ireland that unifies, strengthen or celebrates their effort in the cultivation of a photographic literacy. Although there is a strong support for other artistic practices, there has never been an International Photographic Festival held in Ireland.
PhotoIreland aims to become Ireland’s International Festival for Photography. It will showcase the work of those photographers and artists, national and international, whose critical practice goes from a traditional approach to the medium, to those who question its technical and ideological boundaries, but whose work help us to understand this ever present medium.
An exciting programme of more than 25 exhibitions from Irish and International photographers and many talks, discussions and workshops will be part of the festival and most of the events are free. If you are interested in photography, this is definitely an event for you. Have a look at the website www.photoireland.org/2010 or check the overview of events first www.photoireland.org/pr/Programme_Flyer/PhotoIreland_2010_Programme_print.pdf

It starts at 12:00 and runs until 19:00 with a party in the pub until late after that. If you have never been there, have a look at this short video clip:

FRENCH WEEK – DUBLIN DOCKLANDS
From Tues 13 – Sun 18 July (Tues-Sat: 11:00-22:00, Sun 11:00-20:00) a French Week will be celebrated at the Docklands. The event coincides with the 50th anniversary of Alliance Française and the Bastille Day (14 July) and as part of the celebrations, the Belem, the oldest sailing ship in Europe will sail into the Docklands.
The event is about all things French and bringing alive a festival atmosphere, Le Marche de France, the fabulous French markets that are run nationwide, will be hosting a Festival market. Offering French food, crafts and French atmosphere it will celebrate French culture, heritage and music.
In the usual over-optimism that is a trademark of the people from Dublin Docklands, they expect 80,000 people to this event in its first year. Not necessarily realistic, but nevertheless, it is great to have another Maritime Festival-like event at the Docklands.
The Belem, a French merchant ship in her first years and later on the property of the Guinness family, this vessel is France’s only remaining three-masted barque and Europe’s oldest. The Belem will be welcomed into Dublin Harbour (right beside the Samuel Beckett bridge), by the French Ambassador on 13 July, in time for the Bastille Day celebrations!
Apart from the boat and the French food market “plenty of entertainment” is promised, so check back on www.dublindocklands.ie/index.jsp?p=109&n=341&i=229&mID=100&cID=32

HOLES PROTECT YOU!?
A few weeks ago at the Maritime Festival I found two stalls that sold sun glasses. One was on the South of the Liffey and the other on the North. The layout was more or less the same and the products were the same so I am quite certain that they were owned by the same person. And at this stand I discovered something interesting: They had these 80s glasses there www.flashbackandfreedom.com/images/sg-blinds.jpg in all different colours and interestingly they ALL had a label attached to them that said “UV400 Protection”. Ehem! So holes do protect from ultraviolet rays?? It very much seemed that the shop owner bought glasses and bought labels and stupidly attached UV400 labels to the “blinds” glasses. Hmmm, guess how much you can trust any other UV400 labels on any other type of sunglasses then?

It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
