Hi all!

I hope you all had a good last weekend and good week. I was in Ennis for the Gospel Rising Festival from Friday until Sunday and it was a great event. A number of friends of mine had organised it and they really did a good job. My hope is that it will be a lot closer to Dublin or in Dublin next year so that I can tell you all about it. Some of you know that I sing in a Gospel Choir which is independent for some concerts and events (including weddings) and sings with the best Irish Elvis Presley Tribute Performer, Kevin Doyle, at Elvis Tribute Concerts. We are called Valley Gospel Singers and if you need a Gospel group for an event or for your wedding, le me know! ;-)

In addition to singing with a Gospel Group I do sound engineering for another Gospel Choir and if you like that type of music, you have the opportunity to hear the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir (www.gardinerstreetgospelchoir.com) at a free concert this Sunday. The Choir sings every Sunday at 19:30 in Gardiner Street Church (St. Francis Xavier, near the junction with Dorset Street) and this month is our 10th anniversary. To celebrate this, you are invited to a 40-min Gospel Concert after the normal Gospel Mass on Sun 16 May. The mass goes from 19:30 until approx. 20:30, so the concert part will start approx. at 20:30. Admission is free and I it would be nice to see lots of you. (You will see me – very busy – at the mixing desk. ;-) )

It won’t be a surprise to you that my weekend will be busy AGAIN! :-) Today (Friday) I will be at the “Wealth form Marketing” Seminar and because I have to be there already at 07:30 you are getting this Event Guide earlier than usually and – unfortunately – with a number of exhibition events missing because I didn’t have the time!
On Saturday I might go the Calcutta Run (as a spectator) and if I get a chance, I will say Hi! to the Dublin Sketchers on their Sketchcrawl. Then I need to do some work because on Sunday I have a Gardiner Street Gospel Choir gig and need to prepare sound and lighting for it.
If I could I would definitely go to the Africa Day, but the Gospel Choir gig will unfortunately not allow me to go there. And I will miss the Donegal Day in Temple Bar as well, but hope that you all compensate me for it by coming to Gardiner Street Church in the evening for our gig. It is free!
On Tuesday the Alchemist Café and the public debate about Israel sound interesting and on Thursday the Cycling Lecture and for the girls, the Dakota Bar – Beauty Spot might be a cool event. ;-)

Fashion Editor Constance Harris in conversation with designer Katharine Hamnett. EUR 35,000 COST TO CHANGE DEPARTMENT’S NAME
On Tuesday it was reported that the totally unnecessary name change from “Department of Social&Family Affairs” to “Department of Social Protection” will cost EUR 35,000. Allegedly this is really cheap because the signage fro the social welfare offices will not be changed. Because I have very limited time to complete the Event Guide this week, I will have to drop the most work intensive (and probably least popular?) section, the Exhibitions. Apologies to all artists!

HERE AND NOW – DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY IN SPAIN
Aquí y Ahora (Here and Now) is a photography exhibition jointly organised by the Instituto Cervantes and the Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo AECID (Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development). This exhibition comprises thirteen personal representations of themes, both old and new, that define contemporary Spain: immigration, bulls, tourism, water, land, people, housing, marriage, family memory, terrorism, motorbikes, religion and bars.
The exhibition revisits contemporary Spain, reaching into this intimate place to traverse it, inhabit it, walk through it and settle it. Photographers who have preferred not to be tourists, or intrepid reporters, who are not seeking a newsworthy event or even truth. At most, they search for honesty. Thirteen projects that kill off the clichés surrounding them and take archetypes by storm using something as simple as the first person.
The exhibition will run from 14 May – 21 Aug (from 14:30-20:00) and will be in show in the Instituto Cervantes, Lincoln House, Lincoln Place, Dublin 2.

FAM3 EXHIBITON – IMOCA
18 students exhibit art from photography to video art, to sculptural pieces and installations in the Irish Museum of Contemporary Art (IMOCA) from 14-18 May. CALCUTTA RUN – BLACKHALL PLACE + PHOENIX PARK
This year’s Calcutta Run will take place on Sat 15 May from 14:00. Approx. 1500 participants will take place in this 10km run in Phoenix Park. Start and finish is on the grounds of the Law Society in Blackhall Place and after the run a big Barbeque will take place behind the building of the Law Society. I went to that event not as a participant in the run but as a customer at the BBQ ;-) a few years ago and if you have no other plans, it is worth a visit. The Guinness Jazz Band will play and the atmosphere is really nice.
Started in 1999, the Calcutta Run was initially a run specifically organised for people in the legal profession to raise money for charities. Over the last 11 years, the participants have extended far outside of the legal realm and now come from all walks of life.

A Donegal Day entitled ‘Donegal Live’ will take place in Temple Bar on Sun 16 May from 12:00-18:00. AFRICA DAY – IVEAGH GARDENS
This year’s Africa Day in Dublin will take place in the wonderful Iveagh Gardens (just off Harcourt Street, Dublin 2) on Sun 16 May. The Africa Day event in Dublin will be a fun, family-friendly day out, featuring interactive cultural and educational activities for both children and adults that celebrate and showcase the diversity of African cultures and societies. There will be lots of music, an African Bazaar, an Education Zone, traditional African food and drinks in the Food Zone and cooking demonstrations. Music will once again be a key feature of Africa Day, with performances from African and Irish acts on the Main Stage. A new feature at this year’s event will be the Music Tent, which will feature interactive workshops over the course of the day, where visitors to Africa Day will have the chance to meet and interact directly with the featured performers, as well as try out traditional African instruments, dances and musical styles. GARDINER STREET GOSPEL CHOIR – 10th ANNIVERSARY
In May 2000, the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir was founded by Kevin Kelly and is going strong since. After Kevin, Louise Foxe and now Aidan Greene filled the role of Musical Director with a huge amount of energy and enthusiasm and have improved the choir further and further. The choir consists of approx. 40 singers and a band with 7 people and sings every Sunday from September to June at 19:30 at the Gardiner Street Gospel Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church at the top of Gardiner Street. I started helping out with some sound problems about 4 years ago and what was planned to be a helping for maybe 3-4 weeks turned out to be an exciting and interesting 4 year-long hobby with the nicest bunch of people you can imagine. ;-) This Sunday (16 May) we celebrate the 10th anniversary and have decided to add a small concert to the regular mass. The mass starts at 19:30 and goes until approx. 20:30 and the concert will start directly after the mass and will go for about 40 minutes. Admission is free and you are all invited. I will definitely be there and it would be nice to meet some of you. I haven’t mentioned it yet, but the choir and band are REALLY good and worth a visit and you should know as well, that our interpretation of “Gospel Songs” is quite liberal (and the Gospel Mass priests support us fully), so there are many popular songs that have a spiritual theme included in the repertoire as well. ISRAEL – IS BOYCOTT THE ANSWER? – PUBLIC DEBATE
On Tues 18 May at 19:00 the public debate “Israel – is Boycott the Answer” will take place in the Gresham Hotel, O’Connell Street, Dublin 1. Across the world there is a growing movement calling for an international boycott and sanctions to be imposed against the State of Israel because of its treatment of the Palestinians. For decades Israel has illegally occupied Palestinian territory and denied Palestinians the most basic human rights or self-determination. The Israeli assault on Gaza at the beginning of 2009, which claimed the lives of almost 1,400 Palestinains, including over 300 children, horrified people across the globe. The continuing Israeli siege of Gaza, where over 1 million Palestinians are imprisoned in the most densely populated territory in the world and vital humanitarian supplies are systematically blocked by Israel, is causing an ever worsening humanitarian disaster. The situation has become so desperate that on 5 May 2010 the Director of Operations of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestine Refugees, called upon the international community to break the siege on the Gaza Strip by sending ships loaded with desperately needed supplies.
Few now dispute that Israel has oppressed the Palestinian people in many ways for decades. However, there is disagreement on whether an international campaign of boycott, divestment and sanctions is justified or would be effective in bringing a just solution to Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

FIGHT AGAINST CANCER – PUBLIC LECTURE – RDS
On Thurs 20 May, Professor Jim Johnston, Deputy Director of the Centre for Infection and Immunity at Queen’s University Belfast, will discuss his cutting edge research which is helping to identify the causes of cancer and is making great strides in terms of improving methods of diagnosis and treatment. Currently most cancer treatments are akin to hitting a nut with a sledgehammer and are associated with very toxic side-effects. However, Professor Johnston’s research involves understanding the underlying mechanisms behind novel factors produced by cancer cells, how these assist the cancer growth and the growth of blood vessels that feed the cancer. This work opens new avenues of research that should unlock exciting new therapies that significantly benefit cancer patients.
The lecture will take place at 19:00 in the RDS Concert Hall on Thursday, May 20 and is part of an annual RDS Irish Times lecture programme organised in association with the Irish Society for Immunology. IRISH COUNTRYWOMEN’S ASSOCIATION – PANEL DISCUSSION
The Irish Countrywomen’s Association Panel Discussion will present President Anne Maria Dennison, Elizabeth Wall, Honorary National Secretary Kitty Harlin, Former National President and Ina Broughal, former National President, who will discuss the role that creative arts have played in the organisation and the influence of the ICA on Irish society. MEDIEVAL DUBLIN SYMPOSIUM
The friends of Medieval Dublin are hosting a free symposium about the history and archaeology of Medieval Dublin in May. This 12th Medieval Dublin Symposium is a free, one day event which will feature papers from historians and archaeologists exploring the subject of medieval Dublin. It begins at 09:30 in the Robert Emmet Theatre in the Arts Building in Trinity College and ends around 17:00.

HEAD SHOPS AND THE PUBLIC OUTCRY
In recent months newspapers reported with big headlines about the so-called Head Shops. Legal shops, which sold substances that were mimicking or causing the users body react like different drugs. The substances were called bath salts or plant food to make sure that they are not classified as illegal and the head shops got away with it for quite some time. But the reaction was interesting. Newspapers and normal people said it is a terrible thing that they are allowed to exist. The drug gangs seemingly tried to burn them down and everybody complained about their existence – even their customers complained! I have to be honest and say that I don’t see the attraction in mind altering substances at all and that even includes alcohol. But that is just me and I don’t expect others to understand me. ;-) However, what I do find very very odd is that Head shop customers blame the shops to have made them dependent on other substances! In a way, I find the existence of head shops has advantages over the illegal trade of similar substances. But isn’t it funny if a druggy says: “It’s them head shops! They are the reason why I am now taking Heroin.” Who forced him to go into the shop and to buy anything there? And who forced him to migrate from “bath salt” to serious and illegal substances? After this ban www.rte.ie/news/2010/0511/headshops.html I would expect many shops to close, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a “new and improved bath salt” or “plant food” soon will appear on the market that is then not yet covered under the ban.

This week, I didn’t have 15 hours, but only less than 8 to write this Event Guide because I have to be at an event at 07:30 this morning.
