———————————————————————

Hi all!

A HUGE Thank You to Ciara G, Deirdre L, Stephen D, Mary Q, Donald P, Aidan C, Julia Sch, Isak R-B, Sharon O’S, Brajan V, Nancy O’D for sending me a much appreciated contribution! In addition some other potential sponsors contacted me during the week (thanks to Nancy O’D and others to help there as well!) and I will have a chat with them so see if they want to come on board. Great development! Thanks to all supporters!!

This week saw the very first mail-out to you with a commercial mail. A few people asked me if that will happen often and they were concerned about the possibility that it would. I can assure you that it won’t happen often! If I am lucky (from a financial point of view), it might happen once a month, but realistically it will happen maybe four times a year. I expected 40-60 unsubscribes as a consequence of the mail, but less than 20 people (below 0.5%!!) felt that one single commercial mail after 112 free Dublin Event Guides was just toooooo much to take. ;-)
Thanks to all of you who understand that a small bit of commercial stuff is needed to keep the free stuff coming.

Another question that I was asked is if the event that was advertised in the mail is a good/trustable/valuable event. The answer is: I don’t know! I will go to the event (www.ultimatemarketingseminar.eu/?af=CLA1035324) myself, but have never been at this Ultimate Marketing Seminar before and therefore don’t know how good it will be. What I do know, however, is that it is run by the same organisation that runs the 3-day free “Breakthrough to Success”-seminar (www.breakthroughtosuccess.eu/?af=CLA1035324) which I have mentioned here a number of times before (it will be back on 11-13 Sept) because I was at it and found it very good. In addition I have done an NLP training course myself with the same company and it was brilliant! So, I can’t tell you much about the Ultimate Marketing Seminar, but I can tell you more about the company behind it. Just drop me a mail (dublineventguide@gmail.com) if you want to know more.

I am sure you all get lots of chain mails from your friends. Some are jokes, others are clever pieces of viral marketing (advertisement videos sent on by friends) and sometimes we get these mails that tell us we have to send the positive message on within so many minutes to so many people otherwise we won’t find happiness. This last threat is clearly nonsense, but occasionally the message that comes with it is a real good one. Recently I came across one that I had received a long time ago and probably many of you have seen it before, but there is a very positive message in it and it won’t do any harm if you remind yourself of the story of the two men in hospital where one can’t look outside because of his illness and the other one describes the life outside to the first: www.knowledgebase-script.com/demo/article-183.html

Please help spreading the word about this newsletter. These Mini-Flyers and the Tear-off Poster should help you: www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf
www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf
Nearly all of the 4500+ subscribers only joined because someone else recommended this Event Guide to them!! But amazingly ;-) there are still a few people out there that haven’t subscribed yet, so let’s get them. :-)

————-
Currently more than 4500 people are receiving this Event Guide every week and the wonderful and nice people that have helped financially to get this newsletter to you every week are listed in the next section. To keep this newsletter going in its current form and to improve the layout and readability your help is needed too! All I am asking for is 1 single Euro per month (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). For a whole year that is less than 3 pints or less than 2 gin+tonic or similar. I know times are tough for many and if 12 Euro per year is too much and you ALREADY have given up going to the pub, paying for taxis etc then please accept this newsletter as a gift to you but please pay it forward (i.e. do something good for someone else – it doesn’t have to cost money)! However, if you can spare two drinks per year to help with the cost for this weekly newsletter that helps you save so much more than EUR 12, then please help with your contribution.
You can transfer your donation directly to “Joerg Steegmueller, AIB, SortCode 93-36-78, AccountNo 03556043” or donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm.
Alternatively you can send a mail to me (dublineventguide@gmail.com) and we can arrange a different route for your donation.
This Event Guide is a hobby and NOT a commercial enterprise, but I spend more than 25 hours per week on writing and researching it.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

Since this newsletter is getting longer and longer with all the free events available, this section is meant to provide some help in picking and choosing the events I will or would go to. This is not the “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences, so if it helps you I am glad, but feel free to ignore this section completely! :-) All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

——————————————————–

This is a busy weekend! So let me see, what should I recommend. Here is my plan: We are running a self-defence 2-day course at www.kravmagaireland.com, so I will spend some time on Saturday there. Later I will go to the Smithfield Festival and have a look at the Urban Garden. The Tibet Film Festival in Tallaght looks interesting as well, but unfortunately I won’t be able to go there.
On Sunday I might go for a quick visit to the Harold’s Cross Car Boot Sale, then I have to stop by the Polish Book Market at St. Audeon’s and then I want to go to the Smithfield Market again because there are two bands I want to hear.
I DEFINITELY want to hear Bagatelle from Dublin (watch out for their most famous song “Summer in Dublin”: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EvODdGtQPw). Bagatelle were once hugely popular and successfully and are around since 1978 (with some breaks), but they are back on tour again and are still doing well. The other musical act I want to hear again is “Urban Strawberry Lunch” from Liverpool: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRYC6tRVUfc&NR=1 Music made from recycled rubbish! Brilliant! They started that because their band rehearsal room went up in flames and all their normal instruments were destroyed and they couldn’t afford to buy new instruments but were booked for some gigs! Very different and unique, but amazing stuff!
After that I have to go to the Olympia Theatre for our gig in the evening (The Elvis Songbook, see Dublin News section).
During the week I would LOVE to go to the Culture & The City Debate on Wednesday, but unfortunately won’t be able to. And then you will find me on Thursday at the Porterhouse event on Temple Bar Meeting House Square.
Busy week! ;-)

______Competition______________

NEW HORIZON EXPEDITIONS – BOOK COMPETITION
The book competition that New Horizon Expeditions ran two/three weeks ago was so successful that Tom McManamon from New Horizons Expedition spontaneously decided to make another copy of this great explorer’s book available.
You can win a copy of “Tom Crean, an Illustrated Life” by Michael Smith. The book details the life Ireland’s polar explorer, Tom Crean from Kerry. He was instrumental in several historical attempts to conquer the South Pole with names such as Captain Robert Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton. This pictorial anthology celebrates the exploits of Tom Crean through a series of outstanding photographs charting his life from his early days on a Kerry farm, through decades of heroism in the Antarctic and back to retirement in Ireland. To be in with a chance to win this book, go to www.newhorizon.ie/EG/index.htm. The closing date for this competition is 25 August. Oh, and have a look at New Horizon Expeditions’ advertisement in the “Joerg’s Picks” section!

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

______Dublin News______________

DUBLIN BIKES – DETAILS ANNOUNCED & WEBSITE LIVE
The website for the Dublin Bikes scheme is live and you can register for the bike scheme: www.dublinbikes.ie. In the Terms&Conditions it says that your Annual Card is valid from the registration date, but I got confirmation that if you register now it will be valid from 13 Sept when the scheme officially starts, so all is well.
All details are announced now: You can buy an annual card for EUR 10 and the first 30 minutes of each bike usage are free after that it costs 50 cent for the next 30 minutes, EUR 1.50 if you use the bike for up to 2 hours and EUR 3.50 if you use it up to 3 hours. After that it gets more expensive with EUR 6.50 for 4 hours and EUR 2 per each 30 min after that. So it is ideal if you use a bike for 30 minutes. You can have many 30 min intervals BUT you have a waiting period of 5 min between hire transactions (you only find that in the small print NOT in the FAQs). You need a credit card to get your Annual Card in the easiest way. If you have a bank account you can get it too, but it is more complicated. Laser Card can NOT be used. If you don’t want an Annual Card you can buy a 3-day card for EUR 2 (that is mainly designed for tourists, I guess) and you can do that on 14 credit card enabled terminals (out of a total of 40). If your bike is out for more than 24 hours EUR 150 will be taken from your credit card/bank account. With some minor exceptions, I think this is a very fair and attractive scheme and I am looking forward to using it! I still think 450 bikes are far to few and I HOPE that vandalism and theft will stay at a minimum, but only time will tell! www.dublinbikes.ie Oh one more thing: I tried to click on the signup link for the Annual Card in my Firefox 3.0.3 browser and that failed! With Firefox 3.5 it seems to work. So the website has seemingly still some compatibility issues, I have notified them and hopefully it will get fixed soon. See if it works with your browser/operating system. Unfortunately my registration failed when I tried to get the credit card authorised. So there are still a good few birthing pains with the system!

THRIFTYPAGES.IE
Seamus Brady told me during the week about their website www.thriftypages.ie, which is intended to help you to find good offers for goods and services and to find information about everything that helps you to get easier through financial challenging times. If English is not your first language, it might help you to know that “thrifty” means that someone is good managing his/her money. Sometimes it is seen equivalent with being economic or frugal. Interestingly, however another meaning is that the person is “prosperous”, which means “economically successful”. So www.thriftypages.ie/ is not only there to help you through economically challenging times, but it intends to help you also to be prosperous! Have a look!

THE ELVIS PRESLEY SONGBOOK – OLYMPIA THEATRE
Yes, I have to mention again. Forgive me, but the last few weeks this thing took so much time and effort that you have to bear with me again: After practising and rehearsing for weeks, Kevin Doyle, Ireland’s premier Elvis Tribute performer, his backing band “The Way It Was Orchestra” and his backing choir “The Graceland Gospelchoir” are ready to invite you to a brilliant concert “The Elvis Presley Songbook” on Sunday 16 Aug from 20:00 in the Olympia Theatre. My involvement? I sing in the backing choir and entirely enjoy performing with the other 21 people in this talented bunch of people. I know, Elvis is not everyone’s cup of tea, but did you give him really a chance? Without a doubt he influenced the whole music development since the 60s. And I dare to say that he probably had a bigger impact than Michael Jackson. I can promise a brilliant concert full with all the best Elvis songs, so hopefully I will see some of you in the Olympia: www.ticketmaster.ie/event/180042CF9CA04E79?artistid=997678&majorcatid=10001&minorcatid=1

JOIN A GARDEN GROUP!
Are you interested in gardening and would like to meet like minded people? Peter Donegan, a talented landscaping gardener, celebrity gardener, blogger and altogether a really nice+fun guy (Remember he interviewed me recently: blog.doneganlandscaping.com/2009/07/16/how-green-is-joerg-steegmueller). If you are interested in green things ;-) and would consider meeting other green fingered people, have a look at blog.doneganlandscaping.com/2009/08/11/join-a-garden-group/ Without a doubt it will be anything else but boring to go along to these meet-ups!

BUILDERS, NAMA, BANKING CRISIS?? – HELP!!
Are all the details about builders going into examinership and banks being in trouble and the establishment of NAMA (National Asset Management Agency) too much for you? You don’t know who to trust and would like to understand if NAMA has a chance to be successful? Well, not ALL answers are given, but a hugely interesting article about the tooo close links between builders and banks and about the massive loss NAMA will burden on us tax payers is here:
www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/opinion/2009/0813/1224252497177.html

CARLTON CINEMA PLANS TO BE REJECTED
The plans for a monstrous 13 storey building with “slanted roof gardens” on the massive area between O’Connell Street and Moore Street and between Henry Street and Parnell Street will most likely be rejected by An Board Pleanala, the office that decides over planning applications. The site contains – among many other buildings – the former Carlton Cinema and is therefore often mentioned in the context of this cinema. The full information and a picture of the planned building is here:
www.rte.ie/news/2009/0813/planning.html Interesting aside is that Dublin City Council seeming has agreed to the plans despite the fact that they contradict their own planning and building rules. Hmmm, some would call that “total incompetence”, I guess.

TEMPLE BAR MEETING HOUSE SQUARE WITH ROOF
You are surprised? Yes, there will be a new roof on Temple Bar Meeting House Square. It would be perfect for autumn and winter, but the roof is only installed from Sun 16 Aug until Sun 23 Aug. A number of events will take place there during the week (most of them unfortunately not free, because using the square doesn’t come cheap) and you should have a look, just to see this rare sight. blog.templebar.ie/?p=202

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. If you are one of the courageous people who has recently taken the risk and has started a company and if you could do with spreading the word, I am happy to help you! My contribution will be to let the 4000+ readers of the Event Guide know about your new business and hopefully that will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide – not a demanding task, I would think. :-) (Please note that this offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages, not for established companies/enterprises. If you are established and you want to reach the readers of this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) I will be happy to discuss the (very affordable) advertisement options with you. :-) )

If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

SMITHFIELD FESTIVAL 2009 – THE RANT ;-)
Do you remember my rant/complaint/”situational assessment” of Dublin City’s Events Department and the chaos around Urban Living and Eurocultured? It turns out that my analysis was correct and despite being announced, nothing took place last week. Instead Urban Living (now more appropriately called “Urban Garden”) and Eurocultured both take place this week and are combined under the headline “Smithfield Festival 2009”. And I am looking forward to that event. Has Dublin City redeemed itself? Hmmm. Have a look at the August Event Schedule that did indeed make it this week finally on their website www.dublincity.ie/RecreationandCulture/Events/Documents/AugustNewsletter.pdf. Little problem is that it ends after two pages and therefore does not include the events after last weekend. Arghh!

SMITHFIELD FESTIVAL 2009 – THE EVENT
The Smithfield Festival brings together two interesting events organised by Dublin City. Eurocultured is a music event that “celebrates the diversity of modern European culture via street art, dance, music, performance and interactive workshops, working with the best bands, street artists, DJs, dancers, cabaret and inspirational folk from all corners of Europe.”
Urban Garden “takes a concrete canvas and turns it into a gritty urban garden with architecturally salvaged planters, quirky flower boxes, interactive performers, interactive play area, musicians, street artists, circus skills workshop area, staging area, eccentric planting workshop area, picnic and market area. Award winning landscape gardener, Peter Donegan, returns to Smithfield aiming to create a small urban garden, filled with nothing but what could have been thrown out including washing machine, cookers, satellite dishes.” I was talking to Peter, who writes the interesting blog blog.doneganlandscaping.com/2009/08/10/creating-a-garden-at-the-smithfield-festival/ and he plans to use kitchen appliances (fridges, microwaves) and other goods from the recycling collection and integrate them into the garden he is building on Smithfield Plaza. Sounds interesting and I will be there to have a look! If you go to Urban Garden, find Peter and wish him a great day from the Dublin Event Guide Community! :-))))
Urban Garden and Eurocultured will both take place on 15+16 Aug 09 on Smithfield Plaza. Last year Eurocultured was TOTALLY drowned by rain if I remember it right and in the end it even had to get cancelled, so let’s hope that this year it will work out nicely.

POLISH BOOK MARKET – ST. AUDEON’S CHURCH
Jola L made me aware of a great event on Sunday 16 Aug at St. Audeon’s Church, which is a mainly Polish parish on 14 High Street Dublin 8, not fat from ChristChurch. The Polish Society is inviting to this book market and everybody is welcome. Obviously many or most of the books will probably be in Polish and if you don’t speak the language, this could limit your ability to buy there, but I am sure there are lots of other things and English books as well, so have a look. Maybe on your way to Smithfield for the festival there? In St. Audeons there is a cafeteria on the day where you can get a cup of tea or coffee or get a piece of traditional Polish cheesecake or butter buns. There is also a photo exhibition in the church of nature photographs. www.polish-chaplaincy.ie/?page_id=11&language=en

The debate will take place under the temporary marquee roof in Meeting House Square, Temple Bar on Wednesday 19 August 2009 from 18:30-20:30 (gates open at 18:00). Everybody will remain anonymous throughout the debate by wearing a white mask. This is a free, unticketed event. www.templebar.ie/home_nav_2_t_16_c_39_e_1626.html
I have to admit that I don’t get the thing with the masks! Is it really that otherwise people would not be brave enough to express their opinion? Strange! – I would love to go to that debate, but unfortunately won’t be able to, so maybe one of you can tell me about it afterwards!?

This 8 piece band play the music of all the great soul artists, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Charles Wright and many more. The lead singer is amazing and all the band members are hugely talented and experienced. The Living Room is at the corner where Parnell Street (the street that passes by the Cineworld Cinema) meets Capel Street. www.soulpowertheband.com

YOUNG COLLECTOR’S WORKSHOP – NATIONAL LIBRARY
The National Library is inviting children (7-13) to a “Young Collectors’ Workshop: Match Attax to Manuscripts”. It will be on Thurs 27 Aug, 11:30-13:00 and it is free but booking is essential. The event will take place in National Library of Ireland, Kildare St, Dublin 2. If your child is a collector of ANYTHING, then the workshop is for him/her. The National Library says: “Are you aged between 7 and 13? Are you a collector? The National Library is a collector too. We have the largest collection of documents about Ireland in the world – over six million items. That’s a lot of stuff. To make sure that it is kept in good shape for the thousands of people who come to see it every year our team of conservators works very hard to clean, mend and care for our collection.
During Heritage Week we are inviting young collectors (remember, this might be you!) to come behind the scenes at the Library and find out how we care for our collection. You will meet Louise (one of our conservation team) and, if you bring something from your collection, she will give you some tips on how you can best care for it. If you’re lucky you might even get to try on a pair of white gloves and learn how to handle items from our collection!
Places are limited so early booking is advised. Contact (01) 6030277 to reserve your place now.”

DUN LAOGHAIRE FESTIVAL OF WORLD CULTURE
Only two more weeks until the Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Cultures the highlight of the festival season every year (at least for me, that is!). The programme is announced and in some locations you can find a small brochure that contains all events. The brochure has the picture of a bollywood-type dancer on the front and the colour is a kind of turquoise. I picked up mine in the Dublin Tourism office in Suffolk Street. The festival will take place on 29+30 August and I am already looking forward to it. festivalofworldcultures.com/

WHAT IS LIGHT? – PUBLIC LECTURE
Albert White from www.LightPollution2009.eu alerted me to a lecture that is taking place in September but for which you need to book one of only approx. 120 tickets, so you better decide soon and book early. The lecture is part of the 9th European Symposium for the Protection of the Night Sky and is entitled “What is Light?” Lecturer is Leo Enright. Leo Enright, a broadcaster on Space Exploration and Science, explores the history of Ireland’s sometimes tenuous connection with luminosity
– while naming and shaming some modern big wicks. He will focus on the importance of continuing public access to dark skies, especially during the present ‘Golden Age’ of astronomy, whilst noting that historically Ireland has sometimes been defined by the absence of light – why else would the Romans have called it Hibernia?
The event will take place on Wed 16 September 2009 at 19:00 in the Royal Irish Academy, 19 Dawson Street, Dublin 2. Admission is free but places are limited. For booking please visit shop.ria.ie/shop/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=22&cat=Event%2BRegistration

CORRUPT POLICE FORCE SAYS POLICE UNION?
In my working life, I haven’t met too many union representatives, but I remember one guy in a previous company who literally used bully tactics to get people to join the union. At the time he was relatively low in the organisation, but in the meantime he worked his way up to a leadership position in one of the unions and every time I hear his name on radio or TV, I vividly remember how meeting him confirmed my opinion that unions are not necessarily working for their members, but often have other (maybe more personal?) goals. No matter what, though, I would expect that a union leader will praise his members in the most brilliant coulours and will describe them more as semi-Gods than as mere mortals. BUT it seems there are exceptions!
According to the blog www.irishelection.com a spokesman for the Garda Representative Association was interviewed on Newstalk 106 in their lunchtime show on Monday and he said young gardai would be more susceptible to bribery if they were paid less! Wouldn’t you want your representative to stab you in the back while allegedly fighting for you? Hey, it is bad enough that anyone says: If you don’t give them lots of money, they will become criminals. But if the representative of the police says that about the police, who should be cleaner than clean when it comes to criminal acts, then you really have to wonder in what strange society we live! Odd stuff!!
