Hi all!

Only one more week to the first really big event of the year: The St. Patrick’s Day Weekend runs from 13-17 March. It won’t be non-stop celebrations for 5 days, because there is a disrupting working day in between (the Monday), but having a bank holiday on the Tuesday is breaking the week up nicely. I won’t write too much about St. Patrick’s Day Events this week but will rather leave it to next weekend, however, it seems that one of the free but ticketed events is not yet booked out and if you hurry, you should still be able to get tickets. The event is the outdoor “The Spheres” performance on Grand Canal Square near Pearse Street (about 15 min walk from Trinity College). The show is a theatre/dance/circus performance and will take place on Friday 13 March (18:30+20:00) and on Saturday 14 March (18:30+20:00). If you are interested, you can still request free tickets here: www.dublindocklands.ie/spheres/

But, hey, before that, we better focus on this weekend, because it as well is full of events!

Did you check the size of our Event Guide Community recently? (It is always listed in the header of this mail.) This week we exceeded 3500 people!!!! I don’t know what you think about that, but I am absolutely thrilled with it. When I started writing this Event Guide and had arrived at 200 readers around Christmas 2007, I thought it was a great achievement. I had never dreamt to reach 3500!! But now the goals are a lot more optimistic. The goal of 5000 readers by October is still achievable, BUT I need your help. If you get this newsletter because a nice colleague forwards it to you every week, please think about subscribing directly. Just a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and you are getting the mail directly. And if you have friends who are not receiving this newsletter every week, you can either go to the very bottom of this mail and click on the FORWARD link so that your friends get a chance to read it and then can subscribe themselves OR you should recommend to your friends that they subscribe. I know MANY of you have supported me brilliantly by letting all your friends and colleagues know, but I get the impression that some of you are still keeping this great newsletter a secret from your friends. ;-) Be nice and share the knowledge with them, they will be grateful forever. :-P To subscribe your friends only have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com.
Please help! Reward my hard work by letting as many people know as possible! :-)

I am grateful for all support, the sponsoring is picking up, but YOUR support is NEEDED too! Going to free events saves you a LOT of money. True? ;-) Knowing about these free events is essential, so that you then can decide if you want to go or not. True? This is at least worth 1 Euro per month, which is just 25 cent per newsletter!? Do you agree? Can I count on your 12 Euro per year? Feel free to give more if you can, but please do seriously consider the 12 Euro.
To contribute go to “http ://url . ie/v6z” and just remove the three Spaces in the web address (I have to write it like this, otherwise Spam Checkers complain about the url .ie address.) you then can donate using PayPal or your credit card!
Alternatively you can transfer your donation directly to “Joerg Steegmueller, AIB, SortCode 93-36-78, AccountNo 03556043” or send a mail to me (dublineventguide@gmail.com) and we can arrange a different route for your donation. This Event Guide is a hobby project and NOT a commercial enterprise, so I do need donations!

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges or at least appear to be free unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no guarantee for correctness can be given.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

Since this newsletter is getting longer and longer with all the free events available, this section is meant to provide some help in picking and choosing the events I will or would go to. This is not the “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences, so if it helps you I am glad, but feel free to ignore this section completely! :-) All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

—-Advertisement————————————-
Here could be your advertisement!!!!!!!!!!!
If you want to advertise in this Dublin Event Guide for Free Events, please contact Joerg via dublineventguide@gmail.com to find out the conditions/parameters. Short advertisements can be placed at virtually any point in this newsletter, but are limited to 5 ads per newsletter with a max of 5 lines. Banner ads are a possibility as well, just contact me for details.
——————————————————

This weekend will definitely try to go to the Dublin Book Festival (probably on Saturday). If you have children you should consider the Active8 event in Shankill and if I was a woman, I definitely would go to some events on Sunday and in the coming week in the context of the International Women’s Day. Very interesting are as well the events around the National Brain Awareness Week, but they might not be everybody’s “cup of tea”.

______Competition______________

FUNKY SEOMRA – TICKET COMPETITION
Dancing just for the fun of it? No hang-over the day after a great night out? Having fun without alcohol? Have you ever heard about “Funky Seomra”? It is a club/disco event where you can dance to funky world music in an alcohol-free and drug-free atmosphere. David Mooney started Funky Seomra in September 2008 in the Cultivate Centre in Temple Bar and it was immediately so popular that in January he moved the event to the RDS Concert Hall. (The RDS is a big concert and exhibition centre in Ballsbridge.) Funky Seomra usually takes place on the last weekend of each month, but special events are occasionally sprinkled in and such a special Funky Seomra will take place on the 14 March, for the St. Patrick’s Day Weekend. Funky Seomra made 3 pairs of tickets available for this event on 14 March and if you want to win a pair of tickets, please send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with FUNKY SEOMRA in the subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with my by 17:00 on Wed 11 March. Admission is normally EUR 15 per person and tickets are available at the door. and more information can be found here: www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=34897260145 and here
www.dublin.ie/websites/movement/new-club!.asp

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

FAMILY ACTIVITY WEBSITES
I get lots of mails from you and about two weeks ago, there was a disappointed sounding mail saying that I hadn’t included any events for 3 year old children. It is true, I hadn’t, because museum events require that little extra manageability and interaction with children and usually specify 4+ as an age limit. But there ARE events for 3 year olds and younger. Unfortunately, however, they are mostly not free. This week I am including some information here specifically for parents so that you can keep yourself informed about everything that is taking place:
I hope you parents out there all know www.stickyfingerstravel.com, the travel guide for parents travelling with their children. It is a hugely interesting website full of information about everything that has to do with travel and holidays with children. It is not a travel agent, but you can book through the website. And, don’t forget, www.stickyfingerstravel.com is a much appreciated sponsor of this Event Guide! :-) Via an article on www.stickyfingerstravel.com I found out about www.mykidstime.ie, a website that contains lots of listings of events and activities for families and children. Currently only Dublin South is covered by www.mykidstime.ie, but other areas might follow in the future.
During week Roisin K mentioned www.familyfun.ie to me, another family entertainment website and a quick search revealed that there is a fourth website www.fundays.ie.
Wow, so much information for parents! With so many websites, I guess I should ask the question to all parents if the listing of children events here in the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events is superfluous and if I should stop listing children and family events. Let me know what you think by sending a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject CHILDREN.

MINI-BUDGET
You probably have heard that according to the government the current economic situation in Ireland makes it necessary to have a “mini”-budget in April. Normally Ireland only has one Budget announcement per year. In the past this in the beginning of December, but last year the announcement was brought forward to mid October due to the economic challenges (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallout_of_the_Irish_government_budget,_2008). However, the tax increases were not enough and an additional budget announcement will be made in the first week of April.
Unfortunately the news is not good and you can expect additional tax increases or even new taxes. One component that could easily be added is the removal of the tax exemption for low paid workers. The result would be that even if you only earn the minimum wage, you would have to pay taxes. Be prepared that it will be painful for everyone and make sure that you already check if and where you can reduce your outgoings/spending in case the new announcements will affect you significantly. So, a budget announcement it will be, but it doubt that it will be “mini”!! www.rte.ie/business/2009/0304/budget2.html

———Opportunities—————–

A few weeks ago I suggested/invited everybody on the distribution list who has recently started a company – out of need or because they saw this great opportunity -, to send me some information about their venture and I promised to let everybody in the Dublin Event Guide Community know. I got a good few replies and am still open to receive more. Initially I had planned to list all of these business ideas here together, but to keep the size of the newsletter a little under control, I will now distribute them over a few weeks.

I still have a few opportunities to write about but will continue next week with it.

Shining Eyes Theatre Company, in association with Project Brand New and in support of MAP (Medical Aid for Palestinians), present “Seven Jewish Children – A Play for Gaza”. This play was written by Caryl Churchill in Jan 2009 and produced at the Royal Court Theatre in London in Feb 2009. Each of the seven scenes in the play involve various Jewish family and community members at different times in Jewish history, gathering to work out the best thing to tell an unnamed female child about the situation at hand. The ten-minute play will be performed at Piedescalso Arts Cafe, Thomas Street at 18:30 and 19:30 on Sat 07 March by Sophie Campbell, Hilary Cotter, Mark Gordon and Lorna Quinn and directed by Hilary Cotter.
Entrance to the show is free and there will be a collection taken up after the performance in support of Medical Aid for Palestinians.
The play will also be performed a number of times between 14:00 and 16:00 on Sat 07 March, mingled in with the book lovers in the Temple Bar Square Book Market. Rather than being a conventional staged performance, this version will be an “overheard conversation” for whoever is lucky enough to be within earshot.
The Shining Eyes Theatre Company will be interviewed on Phantom FM’s arts show, The Kiosk, from 11:00-12:00 on Sat and will perform extracts from the play.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
Today is International Women’s Day and in the coming week numerous events will take place. I was looking for a list of all the events, but then received a mail from Delwen B and Gisela B, who both sent me an Event Newsletter that Linda Kelly from the Union of Students in Ireland has compiled. It is an impressive list and a lot of work went into it and luckily I was able to find it on a website so that I can just pass the link on to you. Please have a look at www.whc.ie/documents/42_IWD_Event_Newsletter.pdf for this great newsletter. It seems to contain all or nearly all events related to the International Women’s Day.

ACTIVE8 AND ON YER BIKE! – SHANGANAH PARK, SHANKILL
Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown have for the last few years impressed with their great line up of events and this year they are continuing this great service (www.dlrevents.ie/pdfs/DLR-Calendar-2009_download.pdf). The next event will be on Sunday 08 Mar in the refurbished Shanganagh Park (www.dlrcoco.ie/PressReleases/shanganagh_house_june08.html) in Shankill and if you have one or more cycling-capable children, you just HAVE to go. I am not sure if accompanying parents are invited to cycle there as well on the day and I don’t know if BIG kids (Ann McD!? ;-) ) are, for example, eligible to take part in the unicycle workshop, But nevertheless it sounds like a great event! Here is the official description:”Active8 will be a hive of health and fitness in Shanganagh Park. This free event is to encourage kids to get on their bicycle, get out and get fit. This afternoon of cycling events includes a cycle safety training and proficiency course with the cycle safety school, bicycle maintenance checks, and a cycle trail around the park. New for this year event is the Unicycle workshops where kids can learn how to unicycle and also new for 2009 is a Mountain Bike Skills Course from championship mountain bikers and International Mountain Bike leaders, Tarja Owens and Niall Davis
There to entertain the kids on the day will be Unicycle entertainers along with the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown events DJ and balloons will set the scene for an afternoon of bicycle fun and there are medals for all those who complete the trail. The idea behind Active 8 is to build a habit of regular exercise in a safe environment for children and bring back the bike in anticipation of long bright spring and summer days! Like all DLR Events, Active8 is an initiative by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and is a family friendly event. The event will run from 13:00-17:00 on Sunday 08 March.” www.dlrevents.ie/active809.htm (Please note: Bicycle Helmets are compulsory!)

DRINKS INDUSTRY IS ASKING FOR TAX REDUCTION
The Drinks Industry Group – an umbrella group that includes the guys who PRODUCE the drinks and the guys who sell the drinks and therefore have a HUGE amount of all aspects of the price apart from taxes, have asked the government to lower the tax rate on alcohol so that ten thousands of jobs in the restaurant and pubs trade will be saved and that people will stop going to Northern Ireland to buy their alcohol. www.breakingnews.ie/business/eyaukfausnid/rss2/ and for the full Press Release check here
www.drinksindustry.ie/news.php?intPageID=4&intSectionID=39
Ok, it is pre-budget time, so posturing and fighting for your own interests is a normal thing and all organisations that could be affected by the additional budget in April will voice their concerns and put their demands in in the coming weeks. However, the drinks industry who consistently increased the drinks prices over the last few years with no apparent justification, have some cheek to ask for a tax reduction at a time when everyone is taxed more. Last week in the Westbury Hotel a glass of white wine was EUR 7.25!! Now, if a really good bottle of wine can be bought from the vintner for EUR 5-6 www.vinopan.de/weissweine/ and I am not talking about Blu Nun or Liebfrauenmilch! ;-) then even with transport and taxes and salaries etc and profit the prices here are outrageous. I know this is nothing new, but isn’t it odd that the Drinks Industry is asking for tax reductions but isn’t considering reducing the prices they charge to stimulate the pub and off-licence trade?

However, I won’t say No to donations ;-) and if you want to help me with the running of it (no minimum amount!) just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the word “Donation” in the subject and I will reply with a link that will allow you to make your donation by PayPal or per credit card or follow the link just above this section. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you find in pubs and other venues.
