Event Guide 48: Dublin City Soul Festival, Dublin News, Exhibitions, Secret Garden, Drum Circle, G ay Theatre Festival, Rollerblading, Clondalkin Festival

May 16th, 2008

Hi all!

What a brilliant response to this week’s Special Event Guide about the name change of this Event Guide. Within the first 24 hours I got well over 100 replies. Thanks for everyone who already did reply. If didn’t get a chance yet, you can still send me your votes and I will take votes until at least the middle of next week before I start counting them. A special “Thanks!” to all who added a comment to their mail. Unfortunately I won’t be able to reply to all, but I VERY much appreciate all your positive and supportive comments about the Event Guide!! Thanks! (By the way, the list of names contains a little error, I have one name listed twice (10 and 14), thanks for pointing it out! It won’t cause any problems, though.)

We are now nearly 1200 in this Event Guide community, welcome to all new members and “Thanks for still being here” :-) to the long-term members. I am aware that there are many different ways people found out about this weekly newsletter so not all know the background of it. When I asked recently about feedback, many of you replied suggesting to “beautify” the Event Guide, to use a nicer layout and to send it in HTML.
The background of the Event Guide and the suboptimal layout strangely have a lot to do with each other ;-) and here is the explanation:
I started writing the Event Guide in June last year as a mail to a few friends. It has grown and grown and currently stands at 1200 community members. The “team” writing the Event Guide hasn’t changed yet, it is still just me (two or three friendly souls have offered to help and I haven’t forgotten about it yet!). So there is NO company behind this Event Guide, there are NO financial backers and there is no production team! It is a “one-man show” and it is just a hobby, I DO have a day job and many other hobbies as well!! This might explain why it does look a little rough and why I have invited people in the past to contribute a little to the cost.
If I turned it into a nicer looking Event Guide, the writing and formatting would even take longer than at the moment, and currently I don’t have the time for it. I spend 8-10 hours every week just writing and researching it and the admin (new subscribers, answering your mails with suggestions etc, promoting it online and to whoever I meet) isn’t even included. I hope you understand that I can’t invest more time at the moment.
The Spam problem is really annoying me and if I sent the Guide as a HTML mail, it potentially would cause even more spam classification problems. So unless I find somewhere money or a sponsor, I can’t solve the Spam problem, nor can I promise a HTML based and nicely layouted Event Guide in the near future.
By the way, it has been suggested to me, that I sell advertisement that I include in the Event Guide and I think this is a good idea for financing the expenses, but even my days unfortunately only have 24 hours and with a day-job, I haven’t found a solution for getting advertisement without a lot of work.
Enough of the complaining!! :-) I just wanted to explain this to you so that you understand why a) I ask for donations and b) the layout is not as nice as I would like it to be.
Last week I asked for your opinion about the large number of exhibition announcements that I have included in the last few weeks and the opinion is very clear: The exhibitions will stay in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)! It was mentioned a number of times that people who don’t want to read them should just skip over that section and I think the “section” thing is a good idea. So while previously I listed them on the day they opened or on the Friday, from this week, there will be an “Exhibitions” section and the normal gallery openings will be in there. The National Gallery, Hugh Lane and the Science Gallery are, however, in a different category and will stay in the Day-sections. I think that will help everybody. Let me know if you disagree. ;-)

Spam? Yes, I have to mention it again! Sorry, Lana! :-) If your weekly Event Guide hasn’t arrived by Friday around lunchtime and it is not in your Spam or Junk Folder either, drop me a mail. And if you need help to make sure that it will never end up there again, do drop me a mail as well. There are serious problems at the moment for Hotmail users. :-(

______Competition______________

DUBLIN CITY SOUL FESTIVAL
The brilliant 2nd Dublin City Soul Festival is just around the corner and Chris Maher and his team have again put a brilliant line-up together. The Soul Picnic in Merrion Square on Sun 25 May AND many other events are free. But in addition to that Chris has made a number of tickets available to you for some non-free events and you have still a chance to get your entry in before closing time of this competition. The website www.dublincitysoulfestival.ie lists all the events, but in the “Next Week” section of this week’s Event Guide and in next week’s Event Guide I will tell you more!
Chris was very generous and made six pairs of tickets available for different events for the Dublin Event Guide Community. The gigs are
–Monday 18 May: Ben Prevo Trio
–Tuesday 19 May: Soul Kitchen Covers
–Thursday 21 May: Owen Brady & Friends
So I have two pairs of tickets for each of the three gigs. All gigs will start at 21:00 (Doors: 20:00) and will take place in Cassidy’s in 27 Westmoreland Street. To be in with a chance and to win a pair of tickets you have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com. This mail has to have the subject “Soul – Monday”, “Soul – Tuesday” or Soul – Thursday” depending on for which gig you want to win tickets. In addition the body of the mail has to contain your name and your mobile phone number. Your mail has to be with me by 12:00 on Sat 17 May.
So, have a look at the line-up on the website, decide which gigs you will go to and make sure you go to the Soul Picnic on Sunday (25 May).
Oh, and for the people that love soul and have the funds to pay a little more: If you want to hear a BRILLIANT soul band, the Rance Allen Group, go to the Soul Jam concert on Saturday (24 May) in the Sugar Club. I was at the Rance Allen Group concert last year and they literally blow your socks off! There were only 300 tickets available (EUR 40) and I expect it will sell out if it hasn’t already! Tickets are/were available on www.tickets.ie

______Dublin News______________

This section is a trial and feedback is explicitly welcome. In the process of researching events, I often find out snippets of information and gossip about Dublin that I find interesting. Maybe it only interests me and nobody else cares, But let me share a few things with you and if you like this new section, let me know.

Habitat closed until further notice. It seems that Habitat at College Green ran out of money and has now closed the shop “until further notice”. It doesn’t seem very likely that they will re-open again. Imagine, the yearly rental is allegedly 1.3 million for that shop.

Ballymun Plaza Hotel closed until further notice. The hotel got suddenly closed a few weeks ago and unconfirmed rumours in the travel industry talk about some dodgy employee who siphoned off money from customers in his own pockets and therefore triggered financial difficulties.

Burlington has reopened. Originally intended for re-development (similar to Jury’s and the Berkley Court), the Burlington now has re-opened and is managed by the Great Southern Hotel Group. I am not sure, though, if this is just a temporary re-opening (like for Jury’s and Berkley Court) or if it is permanent.

Jack Jones in Grafton Street seem to have closed down and the shop in Trinity Street (near Dame Street) is closed for renovation.

All shops in Moore Street (mainly Chinese and African) have been closed and the massive area from Moore Street along the north side of Henry Street to O’Connell Street will be knocked down and re-developed. Since Arnotts want to knock down and re-develop the south side of Henry Street from the Arnotts Shop to the GPO and Penneys, it just needs good timing and the whole area will be one MASSIVE building site.

Guinness have decided to stay in Dublin and in St. James Gate. They were considering moving to a Greenfield site. Now they will reduce the inner city site and sell part of it, build a new brewery outside of Dublin as well, but definitely continue brewing at St. James’ Gate.

______Exhibitions_______________

This new Exhibitions section will tell you all about lots of new exhibitions in art galleries, but if you are not too interested in exhibitions, it does allow you to skip that section relatively easily.

CAROLINE LOUISE – STILLORGAN PARK HOTEL
Is a gallery exhibition an exhibition in the way a museum shows items or is it a sales event? Well, Caroline Louise calls a spate a spate and has a Original Art Sales event in the Still Organ Park Hotel. From 16-18 May, she is showing (and selling) her paintings. Opening Hours are Fri: 16:00-19:00, Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00. www.carolinelouiseart.com

ARTS2008
About 20 Galleries will exhibit at an RDS show called ARTS2008 this weekend, but since I was not able to find out any further details and since the website is disastrously bad (looks nice but doesn’t provide ANY usable information), I can’t tell you if it is free or any other information. Pity!

THE SECRET GARDEN – IVEAGH GARDENS
Lisa Smyth, Claire Percy and Louise Foxe all told me about this special event in the wonderfully magical and well hidden Iveagh Gardens: The Solomon Gallery (www.solomongallery.com) have turned this originally private garden (owned by the Guinness family) into a wonderland of sculptures. For smaller artworks a specially constructed glass pavilion has been constructed. The exhibition runs from 15 May – 27 May and features over 100 works in bronze, steel, timber and glass by a broad range of academic to abstract sculptors. Additionally free tours and public lectures are provided on the Saturdays and you should contact the gallery to check the times: The website is www.solomongallery.com and the e-mail address is info@solomongallery.com. The Iveagh Gardens are open every day from 10:00-18:00 and you can get to the Gardens from Harcourt Street approx. half way between Stephen’s Green and Hatch Street.
I strongly recommend that you go to this outdoors exhibition. I am sure you will enjoy it!

______Saturday_________________

CALCUTTA RUN
On Saturday 17 May the yearly Calcutta Run takes place. The Calcutta Run is a 10 km run/walk organised by the legal profession that starts and finishes at the Law Society headquarters at Blackhall Place and takes a route through the Phoenix Park. After the run/walk there is a big barbeque, musical entertainment, activities for children and lots lots more. The event is in aid of GOAL’s homeless children in Calcutta and the Peter McVerry Trust’s work in Dublin. Every participant is expected to raise a minimum of EUR 150 in sponsorship. This year is the 10th anniversary of the run and by the end of this year’s race, the organisers hope to have collected EUR 2 million over the 10 years. Registration is from 12:00-13:30. The run starts at 14:00 and the BBQ, band, DJ and family activities (including bouncy castle etc) start at 15:00. You don’t have to be a participant to take part in the After Party including the BBQ, so if you have a bit of time come to Blackhall Place (near Four Courts) on Saturday. www.calcuttarun.com

DRUM CIRCLE
The drum circle is a group of people with drums that meet regularly for drumming fun at the amphitheatre at Dublin City’s Civic Offices near Wood Quay. “The main aim of the drum circle is to have a public space for people to practice and play drumming, whether it be African, Latin-American, Irish, or European rhythms. People are expected to be open to exploring new and different rythms, also please feel free just to sit and listen, or dance, or play the shakers etc.” The event is free to all and takes place every Saturday between 14:00 and 16:00.
This week, however, the drum circle is moving to the Calcutta Run to support the runners and to start the party. For this reason the drum circle takes place from 13:00-15:00. So, if you go to the Calcutta Run, then you will get a chance to hear the Drum Circle and if you even have a drum at home, bring it an join in with the fun! www.dublin.ie/websites/drumcircle/
Thanks to Claire Percy for informing me about this event!

CAR BOOT SALE
The 3rd ToeJam Car Boot Sale will take place this Sat 17 May on the car park of the Bernard Shaw pub in 11-12 South Richmond Street. It is free to get in and to browse. ;-) Falafel will be sold and if the weather is ok, they might even have a DJ or some live acts there. Since Car Boot Sales in Dublin are rather rare, I will definitely go there. Thanks to all the people (too many to mention) who reminded me of this event!

CENTRE STAGE FESTIVAL CABINTEELY
Dun Laoghaire Rathdown presents another event in their summer series. It is a drama and music festival with 7 free shows over Saturday and Sunday. Again it is a totally free event and as seems to be a direct consequence from “free”, the event is very badly advertised. However, as a reader of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) you are in luck! :-) I found out the details of this brilliant theatre festival:
“The Duck Variations”, Sat 17, 14:00 (Dalkey Players)
“The Moon Cut Like a Sickle”, Sat 17, 15:00 (Young Balally Players)
“As You Like It”, Sat 17, 16:00 (Balally Players)
“The Good Doctor”, Sun 18, 14:00 (Taney Dramatic Society)
“I Dream of Dublin”, Sun 18 May, 15:00 (Horizon)
“Gosforth’s Fete”, Sun 18, 16:00, (St Patrick’s Dramatic Society, Dalkey)
“Swing A Merry Musical”, Sun 18, 17;00, (Dun Laoghaire Musical and Dramatic Society)

DRAMA WORKSHOP – NATIONAL MUSEUM
As part of the Bealtaine Festival for the over 50 year olds, the National Museum is offering a Drama Workshop in the museum in Kildare Street. The workshop runs on Sat 17 May from 10:00-12:00, from 14:00-16:00 and the final stage is on Sun from 14:00-16:00. The title of the workshop is “The Stuff of Myths” and the museum describes “Join us in a creative drama workshop exploring Greek and Roman myths and legends, led by, Ciaran McMahon, a professional actor.” Age: Adults, Booking essential. EGG & SPOON RACE – DUBLIN IMPROV
The Slow Motion Egg &Spoon Race last weekend was fun and about 20 people took part in it. The bystanders were amused, puzzled and surprised, but I don’t think they were shocked. :-) You can find a video on Facebook if you are a facebook member (www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=14249631518&oid=25475730832) and thanks to Declan there are a good few pictures here www.flickr.com/photos/decsramble/sets/72157605005280212/

COLETTE HENRY QUARTETT
A new Jazz Club has opened in Dublin and will host regular jazz gigs. The name is “The 27 Club” in Cassidy’s Bar in 27 Westmoreland Street, Dublin 2. (087 2878755 or 01 6708604, 27jazzclub@gmail.com). This week the Colette Henry Quartett will perform there on Sat 17 May from 20:30. Colette tells me that admission is free, but on another website I found that admission to the Jazz Club is always EUR 8. Their website doesn’t give ANYTHING away (www.the27club.com/) so, I guess we should trust Colette, BUT it won’t do any harm to ring the venue, I guess.

TEMPLE BAR MARKETS
Don’t forget that the Temple Bar Markets, the Temple Bar Food Market on Meeting House Square and the Temple Bar Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane, are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

ROLLERBLADING IN PHOENIX PARK
Last week I went to the second Rollerblade Meet & Train for adults in Phoenix Park and I tell you, it was fun!! About 15 people, most of them beginners with varying experience were there and after practising slowing down and stopping for a while, we went for a nice (but not too long trip) along the cycling paths in Phoenix park. If you always wanted to get the dust of the roller blades that you still have in your attic or garage, come to the next meeting! I will do my best to be there again.
Every Sunday from 13:00-14:00 everybody who is interested in a bit of roller blading is invited to meet at the Papal Cross Car park. There will be a bit of teaching, lots of opportunity to practise and then a bit of a skate trip in Phoenix Park.
See www.skatetraindublin.blogspot.com for details. Experienced Rollerbladers are welcome for demonstrations of technique.
