Event Guide 43: Elvis Competition, Latin America Week, Dublin Haendel Festival, One City One Book, Rathmines Festival, Dublin Improv Meeting, Headphone Disco

April 11th, 2008

Hi all!

Nearly 3 weeks into spring and I am still waiting for some warmer temperatures. The only consolation is that we are not on our own in Europe with the cold temperatures. But I read during the week that allegedly (I didn’t check it.) Dublin is approx. as far from the North Pole as Moscow and Newfoundland and that we could have similar climate to these locations if the Gulf Stream (which provides the relative warmth to Ireland) was ever interfered with. Such an interference could be caused by Global Warming or just through natural changes. Do you fancy -30 degrees like Moscow? Interesting way to look at the effect of climate change!
And a completely different story that caught my eye and in which some of you might be interested in: If you are from a non-EU country and get things sent to you or if you prefer buying stuff outside of the EU (for example US) and want to get it sent to you, there is good news: From 01 Dec 2008, the customs limit will be raised from 22 Euro per parcel to EUR 150. This means mail order from the US is finally becoming a real possibility and with the significant lower prices for most goods in the US, in comparison to Dublin, you will be able to get clothes, or electrical goods etc a good bit cheaper soon.
I know both stories don’t have much to do with Free Events in Dublin, but, hey, there is more to life than Free Events. :-))))
But coming back to the events: Until the first outdoor festivals start another few weeks will pass by, so the weather will hopefully have improved by then. If not, we will have to get the Gluehwein back. ;-)

______Competition______________

ELVIS CONCERT
Last week I told you about our Elvis concert in the National Concert Hall, in which I participated (Noo, I am not Elvis, I just sing in the backing choir!). It was a hugely successful concert and we have more in store for you. And this time I was even able to get TWO pairs of free tickets for you, but more about that in a moment.
From Fri 02 May-Sun 04 May, the Elvis Social Club is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Elvis’ 68 Special, one of the first “unplugged” TV concerts and one of Elvis Presley’s most important gigs which was the start of his Comeback in 1968. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_Presley's_'68_Comeback_Special
The Elvis Social Club has an interesting programme put together and as part of this programme we will perform twice. Kevin Doyle, The Way it Was Orchestra and the Graceland Gospel Choir will perform “Elvis – If I Can Dream” on Friday 02 May and on Sunday 04 May in the Red Cow Complex on the Naas Road (on the Luas Line). Both evenings will start at 19:00 and tickets are EUR 30.
This weekend Elvis Charity Spectacular will benefit “Cinemagic – World Screen Festival for Young People”. Cinemagic is a Belfast based award winning charity that embraces the magic of film, television and digital technologies to educate, motivate and inspire young people through the medium of workshops
Designed for and by young people, Cinemagic caters for young people (from 4 to 25) with just about every level of interest in film – whether they want to watch and enjoy, create their own work or take things one stage further and find out more about a possible career in the film or television industry. And the Cinemagic – World Screen Festival is taking place from the 23 April in Dublin.
Now, if you thought that an Elvis Tribute Concert with a brilliant Elvis performer and an amazing band and choir is already a good thing, it gets better! Performing with us is Ray Walker from Nashville who is and was a member of The Jordanaires and who sang with Elvis for 13 years. Ray is a lovely guy, the same age as Elvis, full of hugely interesting stories and a great singer. In addition Jerry Schilling, a close friend of Elvis’ for 20 years and the former manager of The Beach Boys and Jerry Lee Lewis will be part of the event.
So it promises to be an unforgettable event and you can be part of it. You can buy tickets for EUR 30 by ringing 01-4593650 and you can hope for Lady Luck to help you and enter the Dublin Event Guide Competition. John Kavanagh from the Elvis Social Club made two pairs of tickets available and if you want to win a pair of tickets, you have to send an e-mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Elvis” and with your mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me on Mon 28 April at 13:00. One piece of information is still missing, I know. I didn’t tell you for which of the two evenings the tickets are and that is because I don’t know yet (Apologies, I forgot to ask!). I have a suspicion that they will be for the Sunday evening but I will find out for definite and will let you know next week. If you don’t mind either way, send your competition entry already now, otherwise maybe wait until next week.

ACCESSORIES+PHOTOGRAPHY+MUSIC – EXHIBITION
Last week I went to the launch of “3 Artists, 3 Cultures, 1 Unique Exhibition”, which is on show until the 17 April and it was a very nice event. There are photos from Céline Leoni to admire. When you look at them you wonder where the pictures were taken, but when you read the titles, then you forget about the original motive and start seeing what Céline saw. I loved Planet Earth in case you go! Then there is jewellery from Kathie Stamou on display. It is a completely different type of jewellery than you would expect and this uniqueness makes the jewellery very special. Irish slate is combined with a range of other materials and Kathie had some great ideas. Finally AnnMarie O’Grady is part of this “3 Artists, 3 Cultures, 1 Unique Exhibition”. AnnMarie is a singer/songwriter and is just back from the US where she recorded her second album of her own songs. The exhibition is on show in the “small, but perfectly formed” restaurant Cobblers (4 Leeson Lane, Dublin 2), a little café off Lower Leeson Street (just 30 metres south of the junction with St. Stephen’s Green South and Earlsfort Terrace). You can have your lunch, soups, pizzas, sandwiches and wraps or organic coffees and snacks there and have a look at the exhibition upstairs. Cobblers (www.cobblers.ie) is open Mon-Fri (08:00-17:00). If you are in the area, have a look at the exhibition before the 17 April. You can find more information here: www.Kalmconcepts.com

PHOTO EXHIBITION – LATIN AMERICA WEEK
As part of the Latin American Week 2008, a photo exhibition is shown from Tue 08 – Sat 12 April (10:00-17:00) in the Irish Aid Volunteer and Information Centre (27-31 Upper O’Connell Street, Dublin 1). The pictures are based on the theme of use and abuse or water and natural resources, struggles over control of these resources and exploitation of the resources.

LABYRINTH – EXHIBITION
“Labyrinth”, the exhibition of paintings by Hermann Wagner is taking place in the Gallery53 in 53 Capel Street, Dublin 1 (Gallery53@hotmail.com, 01 873 1181) from 08 Apr until 20 May. Opening times: 18:30-20:30. German artist Hermann Wagner has put together some forty paintings from his latest body of work for this expressionist exhibition. Wagner was born in 1942 in the city of Fürth and studied art in 1961 at the Albert Dürer Art college in Nuremberg for four years. It was here that he began to develop his expressionistic style. He interprets every day objects in his own way and fuels them with an astonishing contemporary feel. Wagner visited Ireland in 1965 and fell in love with it. He now spends many months each year travelling around the Irish countryside in his mobile studio, enjoying the opportunity to paint outside.

CHAIRS – PEPPERCANISTER EXHIBITION
The Peppercanister Gallery (3 Herbert Street, Dublin 2, Tel: 01 661 1279, peppercanister@eircom.net, www.peppercanister.com) is showing Neil Shawcross’ exhibition “Chairs” from 08-23 April. And because I am fascinated by the descriptions of exhibitions again and again, I just have to copy some of the sentences in the gallery’s exhibition text: “Shawcross’ practise is dominated by portraiture and still life and this exhibition will feature recent examples of both oeuvres. […] His figures are a veritable tour de force where gestures, movement and volume are revealed with a minimum of brush strokes. […] When representing a subject […], he translates the mundane domesticity of this object into a painterly statement invested with character. Objects are demarcated by thick outlines in black or bold colour and the work is characterised by a remarkable control of medium. A noted colourist and technical innovator, his still-lifes exude vitality and demonstrate a freshness of approach to this much loved theme which he has subjected to intense scrutiny over the years.” Is it just me or are there similarities between estate agent’s property descriptions and exhibition descriptions. Property descriptions are annoying due to their senseless euphemisms. And I am clearly an ignoramus when it comes to art. :-) Oh and there is a whole sentence about the actual exhibition on show “This current show contains 27 works of varying sizes, all focusing on the universal commonplace Chair.” www.peppercanister.com/exhibitions/present.asp Well, in fairness, I saw a few photos of paintings from the current exhibition and they are worth viewing, but forget the description, just view it with your own eyes! Opening Hours
Monday to Friday: 10.00 – 17.30, Saturday: 10.00 – 13.00

PALESTINE SOLIDARITY – FILM SCREENING+DISCUSSION

WORLDVIEW FILM CLUB – SCREENINGS
Balasz Heller from the Worldview Film Club asked me to tell you about their organisation and events. The Worldview Club is an individual project by a group of young Bahá’ís that believe that arts can advance the affairs of mankind. It offers an opportunity for all of those interested in the art of movies to think about the purpose of life. The presentation of the movies is followed by vivid discussion on various topics by the participants. “Bahá’í” is a religion that was founded in Persia in the 19th century and has 5-6 million followers worldwide. I have to admit that I had never heard of it, but you can find out more here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bahai or here www.bahai.ie. The movies are presented in the National Bahá’í Centre in Dublin in 24 Burlington Road, Dublin 4 (near the former Burlington Hotel) and all screenings are free of charge. Worldview Club events are on every Friday starting at 18:50. The next event is today (Fri 11 April). The theme is “Universal Love” and the film shown is “Forrest Gump (1994)”. If you want to participate and receive regular invitations for the events you can contact worldview.filmclub.dublin@gmail.com.

MARTELLOS – CONCERT
Did you know the old Kitty O’Shea’s Pub in Grand Canal Street? Kitty O’Shea’s was a very popular pub until it was knocked down to make room for the Grand Canal Hotel. On the site of the old Kitty O’Shea’s, the hotel built a pub, but for a number of reasons the pub was never able to continue where Kitty O’Shea’s had left. Since opening, the new pub has gone through a number of transformations and is now called “The Gasworks Bar”. In order to promote The Gasworks and to get customers to come, the bar management has regular live music events organised and I have previously told you about two Buck Taylor gigs and a Salsa evening. All concerts are free and if you are in any way interested in the bands/singers, you should show your appreciation for the free events by going to The Gasworks.
Tonight (Fri) The Martellos will perform in The Gasworks, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to find the starting time for the gig. To find out, you can contact The Gasworks Bar, Upper Grand Canal Street, Dublin 4, Phone 01 230 9628. Some music samples for The Martellos can be found here www.myspace.com/themartellosmusic

And finally until only from this week 09 Apr until 29 Jun “Cut-Outs and Cut-Ups: Hans Christian Andersen and William Seward Burroughs” compares these legendary writers and fascinating, but little-known, visual artists.
The Jack Pierson exhibition became quite famous during the week because complaints about some of his photos made it into newspapers and radio programmes and the museum has now added this sentence to a description of his exhibition: “Visitors may wish to note that this exhibition contains adult themes and explicit imagery.”

BUDRISING STREET PARTY
Did you request tickets for the BudRising Street Party on Sat 12 April, but still have to hear back from them? Well, I did ask for some tickets, but neither got a confirmation nor any other information. Strange! The website is (like many other websites of drink companies) totally overloaded with animation and a pain to navigate, but according to the website the free outdoor Street Party that will take place at George’s Dock and doors will open at 19:30. Originally I was told that it would take place IN a part of the Liffey at George’s Dock on Custom House Quay, which would be drained for the event. But I have not heard any further on this. Either way, at or in George’s Dock a stage will be constructed as well as a carnival area, a BodyTonic ToeJam area and another smaller stage. Mike Skinner, aka The Streets will headline the venue and he will be supported by Mixmaster Mike, Maser and DJ Morgan.
I guess I didn’t get any tickets, because elsewhere on the disastrous website I just found this:
” OK folks, we can report that we are still accepting applications for you and mate to attend the BudRising Street Party – but you better be quick about it! We’ll be informing all those lucky punters who have been successful towards the end of the week commencing March 31st. We’ll send you a text, followed closely by an email with your ticket reference number.
Tickets will then be available for collection from the BudRising ticket collection booth at Georges Dock site on dates between April 5th and April 9th. Keep an eye on your email and mobile for alerts as tickets not collected on the appointed dates will then go back into the pot to be allocated to someone else.”
I didn’t give my mobile phone number (not interested in Budweiser spam!), but did give an e-mail address. Since the 9th is over and I haven’ heard anything, I need one of you to tell me next week how it was. :-)

The Dublin Händel Festival is taking place from Sun 13 April – Fri 18 April. It is an annual event that takes place every April in Temple Bar and in adjacent areas to bring to life the connections between Georg Friedrich Händel and the City of Dublin through a week long. Händel composed his “Messiah” in the summer of 1741 and premiered it in Dublin on the 13 April 1742.

Tickets for all ticketed events will be available for collection from the Temple Bar Cultural Information Centre at 12 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2 from Sat 29th March. From 14:30 on Sun 13 April a “series of witty clues will lead you through the labyrinth of historic Temple Bar, make you laugh, and in doing so help you discover the amazing past life of the city. Plus, there’s a mystery prize for the first team to reach the finish line!” Meet at Temple Bar Cultural Information Centre, 12 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2 for this event. Paul+Cliona, is that something for you to win?? ;-)
There are more festival events during the week, but I suggest that you check the programme for them. If you didn’t collect (free) tickets yet, there is a good chance that you won’t be able to attend these events. If tickets are still available you get them at the Temple Bar Cultural Information Centre.

THAI NEW YEAR FESTIVAL
I quote “The first ever Irish Thai New Year Festival will be held on Sunday 13 April from 13:00-16:00. Thai New Year, or Songkran in Thai, is the biggest public holiday in Thailand. The venue for this year’s Thai New Year Festival celebrations is Cornelscourt in Dublin. There are many attractions and entertainments planned, including traditional Thai music and dancing, Thai kickboxing demonstration and, of course, lots of delicious Thai food to taste as well as cooking demonstrations. Entry is free. The festival will commence with the traditional blessing of the water, taking place at 13:00. Entry is Free.” Unfortunately the website referred to only brings me to a Thai Food company, so if anybody out there is listening ;-) : Please get us more details for next year’s festival! I assume the venue is the Cornelscourt Shopping Centre near the Stillorgan Dual Carriageway and it seems that this Thai food company (www.thai.ie) is the sponsor/organiser.

Phew! So many things and I couldn’t decide what to leave out! A few exhibitions didn’t make it this week, but the rest had to go in. Don’t complain to me about the huge number of free events. :-)

Enjoy the weekend!
