Hi all!

A friend told me during the week that the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) has competition. She heard on 98FM that there was an AIB sponsored “Free Events Guide”. Interesting!

[ad]

It turns out that the AIB seems to promote their mortgages with a bit of information about free events. The events list is prepared by the marketing company Media Central, which is also responsible for ad sales on 98FM and Spin 1038. The website is here, but – oh shock – why are there only four events? Is that all they could find? Where are the other 180 events that you get in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)? And why are the events outdated? When I wrote this (on Friday), the Riverfest was still listed. That took place TWO weeks ago. AIB completely up to date, it seems! ;-)

No competition! :-P Mind you, if someone provided something that is fully comparable with the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), that wouldn’t be too bas. I could then take a few weeks off! :-)

Until then, you will get this e-mail magazine every week! BUT I need your continued help, otherwise it will have to come to an end at some stage. Especially with the cost for the Dublin Event Guide, I need help. Please read the following paragraphs,

And here are two very important appeals:

The sending of the weekly e-mail newsletter costs EUR 170 per month and for this I need your help. If four wonderful people can be found per week, then we usually make it exactly to that amount. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some corporate sponsors. Maybe two or three companies that are prepared to help with a little more than the individual donations of around 12 Euro. If you know anybody, send them my way. :-) Recently the donations dropped significantly. Maybe it is the bad times, but EUR 12 is just 2 pints and for the equivalent of 2 pints you get 52 issues full of information about free cultural events. That’s DEFINITELY worth 2 pints! Please…and Thanks!

And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 20,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 45,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s Feel Good Slot is very simple:

A Flower does not think of competing with the flower next to it. It just blooms!

What could that mean for us? We always compare and compete. Who has the bigger house, car, more expensive holiday or even simpler: I want to look better than her, have nicer her than her, have more muscles than him etc. What if we just ignored the others and did our own “blooming” irrespective from others? Have a bloomy and shiny week!

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Richard A and Arthur D were the generous people who supported the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. A donation that will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader! I really appreciate this help, and I would also appreciate YOUR help!

Every bit counts to ensure that you – and everyone else – will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week.

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

What a super busy week!

The IFI Open Day is this Saturday, Garden Squares Day also takes place. Then there is Youbloom and Various Voices and another few days of the Newpark Jazz Grad Fest on the music side. For the active people, the Bikeweek starts this Saturday and the Irish Cargobike Championship is on Sunday. And on Monday is the oddness of Bloomsday. Street Feast is on Sunday. Two doggy walks “Walk for Greyhounds” and “Bark in the Park” (on Sunday) will keep dog lovers busy. For art lovers the Dublin Biennial is the event to go to and for the LBGT community Dublin Pride will commence.

If I now had to choose from that list, I would go to the Garden Squares Day and to Youbloom, then to the Cargobike Championship and to the Dublin Biennial. I think that will be enough to keep me busy.

——————

Oh and on Sunday evening I will be in the Olympia Theatre to see “Mahagonny – The Rise and Fall of a City”. Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill wrote this story of a Paradise City of Excess, of Loving, Fighting, Eating and Drinking in 1930 and it is in form of an Opera.

It is presented by Sky Ireland, Rough Magic, and ” target=”_blank” style=”color:#cc2979;text-decoration:none;”>here. It is not free (EUR 20- EUR 75), but with all the money you saved by going to all the free events, you could afford this maybe.

I should say that thanks to Rough Magic and Opera Theatre Company, I get a chance to see this play so this little plug here is my thanks! :-)

The role of Giselle will be danced by principal of the Lithuanian National Opera Ballet, Olga Konosenko and the part of Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis will be performed by Irish Ballet artist Leanne Se_ton (replace the “_” in her name here with a “x” to get the correct spelling. Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

Pigsback | O2 | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

(You can also copy these links and send them to your friends.)

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Opportunities

This section is intended to feature new startup companies and projects. Opportunities that people saw and that they chose not to ignore. I am, however, experiencing a little technical problem with this section, so for now I won’t be able to use it. I will keep you posted.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Dublin Garden Squares Day

10:00, Sat 14 Jun

Dublin (various locations)

Every year the Dublin Civic Trust runs the Dublin Garden Square Day, but is not very successful in spreading the word it seems. I found the information by pure coincidence.

Enjoy walking tours, open houses and entertainment across the city’s squares on this Saturday. The free events take place in each of the five Georgian squares: St. Stephen’s Green, Merrion Square and Fitzwilliam Square on the south side and Parnell Square and Mountjoy Square on the north side.

The full downloadable programme is her ein PDF format.

The events are historical, architectural and botanical walking tours, special access to town houses and public buildings, dance and music in St. Stephen’s Green, a rare guided tour of the chapel of the Rotunda Hospital, Music, children’s art and games, and lots more.

And here are some highlights
+ No 29, the Georgian House Museum on Merrion Square is open from 10:00-17:00for self-guided and guided tours.
+ At 14:00: Guided tour of No. 43 Parnell Square West. View the elegant interiors of this 1750s house, recently restored with a
contemporary edge by Lyons Dermody Solicitors. Numbers limited on a first-come basis. Meet on the front steps.
+ At 12:00 join a historical and architectural walking tour at Fitzwilliam Square, the city’s smallest and most complete Georgian square with Graham hickey, Dublin Civic Trust. First-come basis. Meet at the dublinbikes station on the Pembroke Street side.
+ At 10:00 join this historical and architectural walking tour of Mountjoy Square and its houses’ decorative interiors with resident
Karin O’Flanagan. Numbers limited on a first-come basis. Meet on the steps of No. 54 Mountjoy Square West.

Wandering Methods Open Day

10:00 – 17:00, Sat 14 Jun

Dublin Castle, Dame Street, Dublin 2

Join some of this year’s participants of the Bealtaine Festival Wandering Methods project as they pass on craft skills that they’ve been working with over the past few months. Featured crafts will include block printing on textiles, himmeli decorations and crochet.

The participants and lead artist Liz Nilsson will give an overview of what Wandering Methods is, show some of the craft pieces the group have created, and spend time working with you to help create something simple and fun – and hopefully you’ll come away with some new skills that you can use at home.

Places are limited and it was necessary to register, so there is a high probability that all places are gone. But onthe off-chance that there is a cancellation maybe you want to go to the State Apartments and check. Just don’t be disappointed if all places are full. The booking was done via e-mail to lian.bell@gmail.com with your name, your contact phone number and whether you’d like to attend the morning or afternoon workshop.

The Wandering Methods project gives a group of older people the time and facilities to learn new craft skills with professional artists on hand to guide them. While learning these skills, the group is steeped in the history and design of a significant heritage building.

The class is donation based, but all proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin and the suggested donation for this very good cause is EUR 5.

FAT – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 14 Jun

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “FAT – It’s Delicious” and it will run from 16 May – 29 Jun. The exhibition is a “lab in the gallery” event, which means that it is not just an exhibition to watch, but there are some interaction and real research elements to the exhibition.

The exhibition will show you the good and and the bad sides of fat. There will be soap that has been made from human fat (gained during a liposuction), animal fat is being cured in alcohol and a delicious meal will be made from it at one of the events, the benefits of plant oils are mentioned and the risks of obesity are pointed out. In addition you can contribute to research through tests and experiments about BMI, agility, body image and blood quality.

I like lab in the gallery events because it is not “just” an exhibition but you also are invited (you don’t have to!) to contribute to research. Kids will get the exhibition, but need some help from the parents with it. You should definitely bring them! However, kids will not be able to do the research elements and might get bored, so plan your trip well.

As always I strongly recommend to have a look at the exhibition, but you only have until 29 June!

Admission is free and opening hours are Tues-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

FAT – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sun 15 Jun

It wasn’t all white linen and straw hats; they really knew how to have a good time! So come meet the real Joyce’s alter-ego. Bloomsday

07:00, Mon 16 Jun

Dublin (various locations)

A highlight of the year for some, a non-sensical celebration for others:

Bloomsday celebrates a totally fictional day (Thursday 16 June 1904) from the novel Ulysses by James Joyce. The day is named after fictional character Leopold Bloom, the central character in Ulysses. The novel follows the life and thoughts of Leopold Bloom and a host of other characters from 08:00 on 16 June 1904 through to the early hours of the following morning.

Because it is all made up by James Joyce the non-fans see it as mad as dressing up as a Star Trek character, the fans on the other hand completely immerse themselves into the book, get dressed up, speak differently and eat differently, as the large amount of Bloomsday-related events (free and non-free) on the website below show.

Some interesting and some weird events take place and MANY events are not free. One of the stranger events is “Feeding the Seagulls” and obviously as a true “Joycean” you will only feed them on Bachelor’s Walk and feed them with “Banbury Cakes” instead of using just normal bread. The feeding takes place from 13:10-13:40.

Are Bloomsday fans the Trekkies of the 20st century? ;-)

Ireland and Northern Ireland – Constitutions and Culture

09:00, Mon 16 Jun

UCD Campus, Belfield, Dublin 4

“Constitutions and Culture Wars: Northern Ireland, the Irish State and the North-South Dimension” is the title of a conference at the Institute for British-Irish Studies.

Sixteen years after the Good Friday Agreement and after a period of stabilisation of the institutions and completion of implementation, we appear to be re-entering a phase of instability and uncertainty. There has been much discussion of the British role in Northern Ireland and the increasingly positive East-West linkages, in the context of uncertain Scottish and EU relations. This conference focuses on a less-studied aspect of the situation: the North-South linkages and their impact on changing popular politics in Northern Ireland.

Admission is free, but registration is required via the RSVP address on the website below, where you will also find lots more information about the event.

Temple Bar Night Market

18:00 – 22:00, Thu 19 Jun

Temple Bar, Dublin 2

After a successful first year, the Temple Bar Night Market is back this year and thist time there will not just be a few sporadic events, but it will take place every Thursday from 05 June until 28 August.

It is an Arts & Craft Market (and not more – see below!) that will will feature the work of artists & craft makers and street entertainment from music to painting & from dance to workshops.

Last year many people criticised that they missed food stalls at the market and I expect that this won’t change: The market is organised by the Temple Bar Company, an association of the traders in Temple Bar, so it is not in their interest to have competing traders at this market. If you know what to expect, you will hopefully not be disappointed.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

Ireland not at the Worldcup? It’s the GAA’s fault!

Every time there is a qualification round for the football Worldcup or the European Championship there is avast amount of Irish people terribly disappointed that the Irish team doesn’t qualify. Yes, Ireland made it before and it would be NICE to qualify again, but the odds certainly are against Ireland.

Apart from the fact that there are virtually no good Irish footballers who play in Ireland, the size of the country alone makes it quite difficult to have a good pool. But, the biggest problem is in my opinion the GAA. It’s not that the GAA actively stops the Irish team from qualifying, but because there are soo many other sports in Ireland (Gaelic Football, Hurling and I guess we should mention the (non-GAA-related) Rugby as well), there is a massive “talent dilution”.

So many kids play GAA sports or Rugby that the talent is elsewhere and for that reason, I speculate that it is the rarest occurrence that Ireland will qualify for any important football tournament. It could happen again, but there is also the possibility that it will NEVER happen again.

Imagine the same amount of money and effort was invested in football as goes into GAA and Rugby!? It would mean that you could develop young kids from early on to become really good. But that will never happen.

The consequence is that Ireland will be ALWAYS the World Champion in Gaelic Football and in Hurling, but might never again play at the final round of the Football/Soccer Worldcup or at the European Championships.

Now the Irish football fans have to become realistic, but oddly that will never happen either.

Have an event-full weekend and week,
