Hi all!

Today I have to start this week’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) with an explanation and an appeal!

[ad]

Literally in the last moment last week, I entered the Arthur Guinness Projects application process to apply for funding for the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). I will explain all background and details here, but if you are in a hurry, just go to www.arthurguinnessprojects.com/arts/dublin-event-guide and vote for the Dublin Event Guide. :-) The Arthur Guinness Projects (AGP) process is for project in the area of arts, music, sport and food and applicants can ask for the amount of money they think they need. Once the application is submitted, every project needs to prove that their are worthy by getting their supporters to give them their backing.

The backing is expressed through votes for your preferred projects (and you can vote for a number of projects if you wish). Unfortunately Guinness got a bit carried away with the opportunity to promote Guinness and allowed (or requires) daily votes. I am explaining why this is a problem in this week’s “This is Odd!” section at the bottom of this week’s Dublin Event Guide.

The 10% most popular projects (in the arts section this is approx. 30 projects) will get an opportunity to present their project to a jury and this jury will then choose who will get money and who won’t.

The highest voted project in the arts section is currently at more than 3100 votes and we are at 260. If you all voted twice, the Dublin Event Guide would be well ahead, which would be great, but unfortunately many Dublin Event Guide readers will not vote. Some might find the voting process to complicated and others just can’t be bothered. I agree that it is a bit of a nuisance that you have to either register or use your Facebook details to login in. But the registration is required to avoid vote rigging. Guinness could have made it a bit simpler (for example: Why does my password have to SUPER secure, just to vote for a project a few times. We are not talking about a banking website!), but it only takes 2 minutes the first time and then every day when you come back, the whole process only takes seconds.

So, please click on www.arthurguinnessprojects.com/arts/dublin-event-guide and vote for the Dublin Event Guide.

Here are the reasons why you should definitely vote:
The funding – if I get it! – will be used to automate the process of event submissions so that I can compile the weekly newsletter faster than currently! Some money will be used to cover some of the cost for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, because currently the donations are not sufficient. I will also make essential repairs and improvements to the website and will get the web app repaired and further improved. And finally some of the funds will be used to spread the word about the Dublin Event Guide further. With the right strategy I was able to increase the Facebook Likes from 15,000 to nearly 25,000 in just 4 weeks and with the current subscriber growth rate, we will be able to DOUBLE the size to 30,000 (!!) subscribers within 12 month. Lot’s of good things that will not happen without the funding.

So, a last time in this section: Please vote for the Dublin Event Guide at www.arthurguinnessprojects.com/arts/dublin-event-guide ..and vote every day until 23 August, please! If you are not so sure, check the “This is Odd” section further down for a peek behind the curtain.

Urging people to vote for these art projects takes up a lot of time that potentially could be used better, but the opportunity is worth fighting for it. However, it might not happen. Then (and also until the decision is made) I still need your direct and immediate help to pay the Dublin Event Guide bills. Remember that I make no money at all from the Dublin Event Guide. 100% of your contribution will be used to pay the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week.

Every month I have to pay EUR 170 and your contribution to that is needed and VERY much appreciated. If you can help with a small contribution, this will ensure the further-existence of the Dublin Event Guide for everyone. The tiny amount of 25 cent per week (or EUR 12 per year) will be brilliant and you can donate at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm If you can contribute a little or a lot more or want to choose the subscription option (EUR 12 per year) I love you even more. ;-) If you currently are a little under pressure and therefore want to give a bit less for now, that’s ok too! Every bit counts. Thanks!!!

And if you like the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) tell the world! Get everyone to subscribe to the weekly e-mail at www.dublineventguide.com and also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide

You can also help the Dublin Event Guide by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Now, lots of free events are waiting for you!

have a great weekend + week

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

I never thought of Ashton Kutcher as a particularly inspirational person, but he won the Teen Choice Award recently and his acceptance speech to a huge amount of teens was outstanding and does NOT just apply to teens! (But if you have teens in your family or around you, show them this video clip.) And definitely check it out for yourself and take his advise with you.

…and always be seksy… you will understand when you watch the video (and the wrong spelling is to avoid the wrap from spam filters). ;-)

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

Last week Mark G, Orlagh O’F, Méabh C and Meav NiM were the great people who helped with a crucial donation! Thanks a lot! All the support is much needed. Do you want to be part of the “wonderful people list” as well? Just a small contribution and you will join the ranks of the much appreciated Dublin Event Guide supporters.
Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you and everyone else will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and your EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This week there is lots to recommend:

The Jack of Diamonds Rhythm & Blues Festival on Fri, Sat and Sun is high on the list. I will be there at some stage and will also go to the Toejam Carboot Sale on Satuday and also at some stage over the weekend I will go to the People’s Art Exhibition on the rails of St. Stephen’s Green. For people with green fingers, the Plant Fair in Farmleigh House on Sunday sounds interesting. And then there is the Heritage Week with hundred’s of events. You won’t get bored!! :-)

Playgrounds for Adults

Emily Gallagher, who also runs the free/donation-based “My Favourites” Walking Tours every Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday, did her dissertation about the benefits of play activity as part of excercise for adults. She concluded that adult playground would probably encourage higher rates of physical activity and higher rates of positive health and wellbeing. She got very good markes and a number of the governing bodies were very interested but told her they need stronger input before they could consider the idea further.

Emily is now looking fro your help. She has cut her questionnaire into 5 sections and it would be great if you could answer all of them. The sections are here:

Section 1: www.surveymonkey.com/s/2GWT9ZT
Section 2: www.surveymonkey.com/s/CCTGHZJ
Section 3: www.surveymonkey.com/s/QYZ587N
Section 4: www.surveymonkey.com/s/SZXHYH7
Section 5: www.surveymonkey.com/s/RY9MQRH

Your help is important and maybe we wil get a plaground for adults at some stage in the not to distant future.

Opportunities

If you took the opportunity and started a new business recently (not more than approx. 6 months ago) and need a bit of support to let Dublin know about your new venture, talk to me. In this section I will feature new companies every now and then. I had to give it a rest for a while due to some technical challenges, but I seem to have mastered them more or less by now. ;-)

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Sand Sculpture Exhibition

09:00 – 18:00, Sat 17 Aug

Dublin Castle, Dame Street, Dublin 2

This is a cool art installation! Every year for the last 11 years, a group of sculptors turns more than eighty tons of sand in a unique exhibition/installation outside in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle.

This year’s theme for the sculptures is “The Bright Side” and will show what is good about Ireland and being Irish. Four big sand sculptures have been carved into heavily compacted sand by the artists from Duthain Dealbh (Irish Sand Sculpture) and the exhibition will run from 06-28 Aug and all will disappear on 29 Aug.

The exhibition is impressive and I strongly recommend it. MASSIVE “sandcastles” impress small and tall kids! :-) Admission is free.

ILLUSION: Nothing is as it seems – Science Gallery

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 17 Aug

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The current Science Gallery exhibition “ILLUSION: Nothing is as it seems” will run from 12 July-29 Sept and is really interesting. Admission is free.

The exhibition is all about Illusions and it is a “perception-shattering insight into the human mind, playfully combining the techniques used by magicians and explored by psychologists.”

More than 20 installations will deceive your eyes (and ears) and will show you that what we perceive is often radically different from the reality. You will find impressive and amazing things, but nothing will be boring! The exhibition is suitable for all ages, so bring your children or – if you don’t have any – just bring yourself.

I have seen nearly every Science Gallery exhibition and I would say this is definitely one of the best.

ILLUSION was curated by psychologist, author and magician Richard Wiseman, and was researched by deception artist Paul Gleeson and a large group of mediators are available in the gallery to explain all the things that you see (or hear) to you.

Have a look at the website below to see an outline on what is on show. I strongly recommend that you see the show and tell me afterwards what you thought about it: dublineventguide@gmail.com (During the week (Tues-Fri) the exhibition is open until 20:00 and from 12:00 and on Sat+Sun; 12:00-18:00).

Let’s hope that the new location will be a success and let’s all flock to Moxie Studios on Saturday.

Four big sand sculptures have been carved into heavily compacted sand by the artists from Duthain Dealbh (Irish Sand Sculpture) and the exhibition will run from 06-28 Aug and all will disappear on 29 Aug.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Sand Sculpture Exhibition

09:00 – 18:00, Mon 19 Aug

Rose of Tralee

20:00 – 23:00, Mon 19 Aug

Dublin (various locations)

This is not an activity or an event in Dublin, but it is an institution and takes place in Tralee, but you can watch it stretched out painfully over two nights (Monday + Tuesday). The Rose of Tralee Selection Night is, hmmm, what should I call it…. It is different! And strange and odd.

If you grew up in Ireland you have your own memories, but imagine a Marsian just had landed and you need to explain (or justify) the Rose of Tralee event.

If you have never seen it, watch a few minutes and experience a sort of Irish culture that seems hundreds of years out of place but is still going very strong. RTE One will show it.

Many people have Eurovision parties every year. In the same spirit maybe there should be Rose of Tralee parties. Or is this institution maybe to sacrosanct for that? ;-)

Rose of Tralee

20:00 – 23:00, Tue 20 Aug

Or is this institution maybe to sacrosanct for that? ;-)

Sand Sculpture Exhibition

09:00 – 18:00, Wed 21 Aug

Dublin Lockout Exhibition

14:00, Wed 21 Aug

National Library, Kildare Street, Dublin 2

A new multimedia exhibition opens in the National Library on Wednesday. “The Dublin Lockout” tells the story about the 5 month of conflict between workers and employers in 1913.

Items on display at the NLI exhibition will include Jim Larkin’s scribbled advice to union colleagues before he was arrested, urging that “all must work together”, alongside the details of that arrest in the Dublin Metropolitan Police records. Films and interactive touchscreens will allow visitors to explore the experiences of the people who lived through this complex conflict.

The exhibition will be at No 2 Kildare Street until March 2014 and admission is free.

I read up a little about this conflict and it doesn’t all sound that straght forward! The unions seem to want to glorify the union leader Jim Larkin and there is even a whole day of Lockout celebrations planned in O’Connell Street on 31 August. But when you look into it a bit further, it becomes more and more doubtful that the employers were the clear baddies and the unions were the goodies. So, go to the exhibition and make up your own mind. Hopefully the exhibition is reasonably balanced.

Sand Sculpture Exhibition

09:00 – 18:00, Fri 23 Aug

Arthur Guinness Projects – Philanthropy or self-serving advertisement

Twitter, Facebook and Blogs are full of art, music, sports and food projects appealing urging, begging, bribing or just hoping for their supporters to vote for these projects. Supporters need to vote not just once, but daily for their favourite projects and many supporters are starting to develop a jaundiced or straight-out negative opinion about the poking that they are exposed to for another whole week.

Jim Carroll wrote at www.irishtimes.com/blogs/ontherecord/2013/08/14/we-need-to-talk-about-arthur/ and interesting piece that makes some interesting points.

I see two sides of the whole Arthur Guinness Project (AGP) madness. There is definitely a huge plus side, but also a lot of questionable aspects. First of all: Guinness is a highly profitable business and their shareholders expect that to remain, so whatever they do has to be seen with that in mind. They might appear philanthropic at times, but unless they get or at least perceive a benefit, no shareholder would want any profits to leave the company. So all philanthropy has to be checked against benefits before money leaves the coffers. Sponsorship of arts sometimes has less direct benefits than advertisement or mass spectator sponsorship (e.g. sports sponsorship or Arthur’s Day) but it is still beneficial.

Arthur’s Day, the country wide music event on a pretend-anniversary of something that is in with connection with Arthur Guinness. (There is no anniversary of any sorts. It is just a random date that is named “Arthur’s Date”.) is a brilliant marketing coup (or gimmick) but I think the AGP is even cleverer.

Think about it: You use 3 mio that you promise for sponsorship. Possibly not all will be granted in cash (nobody knows) but maybe in equivalent-value-services and the money will be distributed over three years. So it costs about 1 mio per year. A hefty sum for applicants, but for Guinness it is not that huge: The Guinness “Clock” ad that was launched in January of this year did cost approx. EUR 6.5m (!!!) to make! That is ONE video of a ONE minute duration! You can see that the 1 mio per year for AGP is comparable small fish for big Guinness.

But for a small project like the Dublin Event Guide, that runs on a budget of EUR 170 per month at the moment, ANY sponsorship is a BIG BIG deal. That’s why so many applied. Sure there are some truly rubbish ideas among the applicants and others would possibly manage to frizzle the money away and still achieve NOTHING. But that is where the first qualification round comes in. If a project doesn’t have enough people that believe in it, it won’t make it to the hury round.

Unfortunately the philanthropic aspect was compromised by Guinness’ benefits requirement and for that reason it was made a requirement to get people to vote daily. What do they achieve by doing that? That for about 3 weeks Facebook, Twitter, Blogs and even newspapers are full of “Arthur Guinness Project” and many many people will talk about AGP and hear about it, because people like myself will hassle their supporters to vote and help and vote again.

For the applicants it would have been better if everybody only had ONE vote, but that would be a much quieter affair. So we have to play by the rules that are defined and …. to be honest …. if funding results from it, it definitely was worth it for applicants and supporters!

However the losers will struggle because everybody (and that includes me) thinks that their project is the one that should be funded. Otherwise we wouldn’t invest any time and effort. I don’t know if purely commercial projects or bog-standard companies should be allowed to apply for funding, because they have other sources and other goals than the genuine artistic projects, but maybe there will be an adjustment in the future.

For the Dublin Event Guide, funding would be “life-changing” and therefore I tirelessly campaign for your support. Sure Guinness benefits from that. but I am ok with them getting a benefit if the Dublin Event Guide gets money

All will probably be different, though, if they will decide against funding the Dublin Event Guide. ;-) And that is not a threat, it is just normal human emotion. ;-)

So to make sure that that won’t happen, please vote here www.arthurguinnessprojects.com/arts/dublin-event-guide and vote often! Thanks!!

–Advertisement————————————

That’s it for today again. Enjoy the weekend and the following week and don’t forget to vote often for the Dublin Event Guide. And if you check the Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide in the afternoon, you will find out what position in the field of applicants the Dublin Event Guide has reached.

You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
