Hi all!

Back to the “usual” late time after the early Christmas present of last week’s early arrival of the Dublin Event Guide. I see now what I can do to get it out earlier, but unfortunately I don’t think this is an option. Last week I worked on the Event Guide on Monday and Tuesday and on Wednesday I worked through the night and still had a bit of work left on Thursday evening. But that would mean that I would have to sacrifice ALL my life to write the Dublin Event Guide. I am sure you agree that that doesn’t make sense! :-) So, I found ONE option of sending it earlier, but it wasn’t the right option. For me that means: Back to the drawing board and find another 5 or more options. I will! ;-)

[ad]

I had a super weekend last week and thanks for the nice wishes that I got from some of you! I went to two proper Christmas Markets, had lots of Glühwein, really good food and all this was made even nicer because jsut when I arrived in Germany, snow started to fall and stayed around for the whole three days. No traffic chaos just all going a little slower. Just great.

This week I will check lots of Christmas Markets in Dublin and I already heard from some of you that it is not so impressive, but let’s hope that there will be some improvement every year so that in a few years we can have outstanding Christmas Markets here as well.

I explained last week how you can help the Dublin Event Guide without having to pay a cent more than you would spend anyway by using the links in the DUblin News section and thanks a lot to the people that already did that. Keep using the links when you buy your Christmas presents or whatever else you need!
A reminder about the context: Many online retailers don’t pay for advertisement anymore, but they pay a small commission on sales that was the result of a promotion. So most of the ads you see in this e-zine week after week are not making any money UNLESS you click on it and then also complete your purchase in the same process. Without any cost to you, about 5% of the purchase value (50 cent from a EUR 10 buy) is paid to the me, the “advertiser”. So if you want to buy books, buy them (for the lowest price anyway) through the Book Depository link in this newsletter. You get the best price and don’t pay any postage if you buy from Book Depository. If you want to buy from Amazon or Groupon or Lastminute.com also do please click on the banners EVERY TIME before you do. Please use the ad links in this newsletter. And this week I am listing another few online stores that you should use. Check the Dublin News section! Remember that it doesn’t cost a single cent to you, but that you help the Dublin Event Guide HUGELY!

And one other thing: It hasn’t happened yet in five years, but there will be a first at some point and I am ready for it! :-) In case you feel the urge to send me a Christmas present, you can simply choose it from my wishlist on Amazon.co.uk and get it directly sent to me. I have lots of wishes in all different price categories and I will be eternally grateful. I know some of the things I am interested in are a little odd, but, hey, that’s me! LOL Here is a selection of things from my letter to Santa: www.perfectresults.info/wishlist.htm

And the last thing: Please keep spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide. Tell people that they should subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com (on the right hand side) and then also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide on Facebook at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide . Donations are happily received here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm Any amount helps!

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.

Today I have a song for you. It is a simple and nice Feel Good song about our childhood, but there is more behind it!

The Wicklow-based singer/songwriter/musician who wrote and sings the song is Nancy Falkow, who is a self-declared “fan” of the Dublin Event Guide and she recorded this single in aid of the Jack & Jill Foundation. You can listen, download and donate to the charity at www.NancyFalkow.bandcamp.com You can listen for free and then you can donate. There is a minimum donation of $1 and you get a digital version of the single, but you are invited to give more.

I like the song and suggest that you check it out and donate if you can.

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

Last week Sean S and Zelie McG were so wonderful to help with a donation. All the support is much appreciated!
Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that everyone will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and I need your help!
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down

This week I will overdose on Christmas Markets! Docklands Christmas Market, Francis Street Christmas Fair, Christmas Cracker Flea Market, Dun Laoghaire Christmas Market, Chocolate Factory Christmas Fair and Dame District Christmas Market. WOW, six markets! And that is NOT the full list. I’d say everybody will find something this weekend, but you are in trouble if you dislike Christmas. :-O

If you have children to entertain, check out the fully Live Crib in the Irish Cultural Centre in Clondalkin (Sat) even with live baby and also the Treasure Hunt at the Docklands Christmas Market (Sun).

If y ou never came to the Gardiner Street Gospel Mass, but always wanted to come then you should do so this week, because a small Christmas Gospel/Carol Concert is added after the normal mass. In my technical/sound engineering role for the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir I will do my best to make them sound as good as I can!

I know all Christmas stuff, but don’t dispair, there is lots of other things as well. From chef Neven Maguire in the National Library via a range of gigs in Whelan’s and in the Mercantile (among other venues) to some events in connection with the GAME exhibition in the Science Gallery.

181 events to choose from and all free! I’d say you will find something!

Restaurant Update

A good few changes have happened in the Restaurant World in Dublin and if you know more (and I am sure there are many more!) send them to me. A few things that I have discovered in Dame Street recently:

The Noble House a Chinese Restaurant between George’s Street and Dublin Castle is closed for some while and has been emptied and neutralised (names have disappeared) now. Directly next to it was an Italian Restaurant that was originally called Boccaccio and then became Russo’s. Russos’s has closed down a couple of weeks ago and the premises have now also been neutralised.

On the other side of the street, Charlie 2, the fast food Chinese restaurant next to the Olympia has closed down but there are at least 2 more Charlie Restaurants (Temple Bar and George’s Street) VERY near by, so you won’t miss anything. Instead the place where Charlie 2 was in is now a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant. I wonder if they smelled that there is money in them chickens since Crackbird is just a few meteres away and is doing well.

Another bit closer to Christ Church at the corner Dame Street with Parliament Street, a name change and menu change has taken place. The former Da Pino, that was changed to Salamanca Fusion is now call BamBoo and calls it self “Sushi & Grill Restaurant”. The owner is still the same, but the menu is now different. A restaurant critic in the Independent from early days wasn’t very positive, Tripadvisor reviews are OVER positive (Is it employees wiriting them??), so maybe go for a moderate middle!?

Four significant changes in City Centre locations over a distance of less than 100 metres? That’s not a good sign!

Opportunities

I have some small technical problems with this section, so there will be a bit of a further delay, but the next company introductions will be here soon!

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

It Was All A Bit Black And White

22:30, Fri 14 Dec

Whelan’s, 25 Wexford Street, Dublin 2

I often wonder how a band came to their name and when they first started to realise that the chosen name was a bit of a pain! :-)

One of the bands I wonder about is playing in Whelan’s tonight: “It Was All Black And White”, a 2-piece experimental, instrumental band will be on stage in the Midnight Hour and they will be supported by The Depravations, a 4-piece indie folk band from Galway.

Doors open at 23:30, but admission is free only if you are there before 22:30.

Bring & Buy Sale – Dog Rescue

11:30 – 15:00, Sat 15 Dec

Donnycarney Community Centre, Clancarthy Rd /Collins Ave., Dublin 5

A Bring & Buy Sale in aid of Dog Rescue Ireland will take place and needs you to bring items in good conditions that can be sold on the day. (You can ring 087-2651720 to arrange collection.) In addition you are needed to buy items there on the day

The event is not free, but the price of EUR 0.50 per person is so low that I decided to include it here. (The admission charge is a bit surprising. Too low to raise a significant amount of money and too high to advertise the event with the more appealing tag of “free”. I would instead ask for a voluntary donation of EUR 1 and otherwise try to get as many people to come and buy items at the market. But I am sure the organisers have a good reason for what they are doing.)

Moving Crib

11:30 – 18:00, Sat 15 Dec

Saint Martin’s Apostolate, 42 Parnell Square, Dublin 1

The Moving Crib in St. Martin Apostolate has fascinated generations of children from Dublin and all over Ireland and 50 years after it first began, it still draws the crowds. The Moving Crib is like an expanded Nativity Play going back to Adam and Eve and finishing after the crib scene with the young Jesus teaching the Doctors in the Temple. There are over 100 figures in the Crib arranged in 14 different tableaux. They cover various episodes of the Old and New Testament. The figures are about a metre high, moulded in papier-mache and dressed in miniature clothes. Concealed motors control the movements of the arms, head and legs. All figures, motors, clothing etc. come from a firm in Germany.

Four events take place each day, running for 30 minutes. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find out yet when these four events take place. The opening hours are Weekdays: 14:00-18:00 and Weekends: 11:30-18:00 from 26 Nov-06 Jan. Admission is free.

Moving Crib

11:30 – 18:00, Sun 16 Dec

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

Come to this “Friday Night Game Social: Khet” and and join in for an evening of combining strategy games with lasers.

Khet is an abstract strategy board game in which two players fire lasers to strike and remove Egyptian-themed game pieces from the board. Most of the pieces are mirrored on one or more sides, allowing players to alter the trajectory of the laser beam each time it is fired by changing the position of the playing pieces. When a piece is struck by a laser on a non-mirrored side, it is eliminated from the game. The object is to hit your opponent’s pharaoh with a laser, thereby claiming victory, all the while protecting your own king.

Admission is free, but booking is required.

The Last Rave on Earth

20:00, Fri 21 Dec

Sweeney Mongrel’s, 32 Dame Street, Dublin 2

I normally don’t include DJ events, simply because there are too many. Every pub and club has a DJ and I wouldn’t be able to differntiate between an outstanding DJ and a guy who plays MP3s from his iPOD … some would say there is no difference, but that would be a little harsh. ;-)

Anyway, the reason why I include this event is because it is meant to be the last rave on earth IF and only IF the interpretation of the Mayan calender comes true that claims the earth will come to an end next Friday. I’d say the Mayans just had no space on their calender anymore and decided to add the years after 2012 in the next “print” run!

Anyway (2!), here is what is taking place at the last rave: The Zombie Circus presents
+ 1st Floor: Lex Woo – Dj Mog-Y – Ras Tinny with Reggae/Funk/Soul/Hip-Hop/Breakbeat/Afrobeat/Jazz/Electro
+ Ground Floor: Kurt Coca ine – Claire Meow Catt with Rock & Roll / Funk / Soul / Disco/ 80’s Cheese/ 90’s Classics
and lots of home-grown stuff

Admission is free.

Events Coming Up

Dublin Mountain Partnership – Guided Walks

The Dublin Mountain Partnership runs guided walks in the Dublin mountains every month. They are at times quite strenous and only for very experienced walkers, but some other walks have only a moderate degree of diffculty. For all walks you have to pre-register on the Friday before the walk this doesn’t fit perfectly into the publishing schedule of the Dublin Event Guide, so I am only listing their walks in this section. The next walks are on 16 Dec (4km, 2 hrs, Easy) and a second walk on 16 Dec (11.5km, 4hrs, Moderate) and 27 Dec (15km, 5hrs, Strenuous). Find all information at www.dublinmountains.ie/news/upcoming_events/?no_cache=1 and remember that you will have to pre-book!

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

Rudolph the most annoying reindeer!

Ah, I love Christmas, The atmosphere, the decorations, the trees, the Christmas Markets and the music. Now, I am not too much into “Silent Night”, but there are a lot of really good Christmas Songs around and it is nice to hear them for a couple of weeks and then to have to wiat until next year. So in previous years I listened to Christmas FM as much as possible. Christmas FM is a radio station in Ireland that is only on air from the beginning of December until 26 Dec and then disappears again. It is made up of volunteer DJs who all work for other radio stations and give their time to do the shows on Xmas FM.

Unfortunately I can hardly stand the listening to Christmas FM this year. What happened? It is Rudolph! To me Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer is one of the or mayeb THE worst Christmas song. But for some reason Xmas FM either seems to love that song OR they have a really bad selection of songs available. If that flippin’ Rudolph song is played at least every hour and sometimes seemingly more than once per hour, then I can’t take it any longer. So Christmas FM has lost me this year (they will survive that! ;-) ) and instead I am listening to Christmas Songs on the Internet. Darn Rudolph! Why do people seem to like that song? Odd!! www.christmasfm.com/

If the Mayans were right, then this week’s Dublin Event Guide is the last one you are getting. But I am quite confident that you won’t miss it if they were right. In the much more likely event, though that they were not right (I could imagine that THIS happened: img4.allvoices.com/thumbs/image/609/480/94742359-thatll-freak.jpg :-) ) then you will get TWO more Dublin Event Guides before the end of the year! Something to look forward to! ;-)

Have an event-full time,

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
