Hi all!

Time is flying when you are having fun! :-) But seriously: Bad enough that the years just fly by and if you blink at Christmas one year it is December of the next year when you open your eyes. Now it even seems that the time between Thursday nights is getting shorter and shorter. Maybe it has something to do that last weekend I was for 3 days or 39 hours (!!!) at the Chris Howard “Breakthrough to Success” Seminar. I had mentioned it here a few times before and many of you had registered for it, but not tooo many did come and even less held out the whole three days.

A lot of people have asked me about the seminar before and since and for everyone who is curious, here is my thinking after this year’s seminar: I STILL think that it is brilliant and hugely inspirational and I entirely enjoyed the three days. When I did the course the first time, I thought EVERYONE should do it and was wondering how anybody could NOT enjoy it, but this time I realised that you a) need a lot of stamina, b) need to be determined to go through to the end (there is always something better to do, c) need to be interested and positive about personal development (if there is nothing to improve in your life you won’t enjoy it ;-) ) and d) need to start on the Friday (anybody who I know and who thought skipping the Friday should be fine, did fail to reach the end of the course).

The next seminar with Chris Howard is in on 13-15 March 2009 and I still recommend anybody – who fulfils the above criteria ;-) – to go. But last weekend I realised that – for varied reasons – people do or might choose to deviate from the criteria above and then you will most likely not enjoy the course. IRISH WRITERS’ CENTRE EVENTS – TICKET COMPETITION
The Irish Writer’s Centre did make tickets available for two of their current event series.
a) The Hourglass Readings are fortnightly readings by leading contemporary authors at the Irish Writers’ Centre, 19 Parnell Square, Dublin 1. This unique and intimate series of hour-long public readings has been curated by leading novelist and poet Dermot Bolger. In conversation with Bolger, writers will read from and discuss their work. The upcoming readings are

December 2 – Eugene McCabe

b) Into Print with Jonathan Williams
Starting in October, leading literary agent Jonathan Williams presents an exciting new monthly series of talks aimed specifically at aspiring writers. Each month he will provide indispensable advice and information to those who are looking to see their work into print. From choosing and dealing with agents, editors and publishing houses through to issues of presentation, publicity, and marketing one’s work, these unique presentations in the Irish Writers’ Centre will provide aspiring writers with expert insights into the world of letters and how to negotiate one’s way within it.

AMERICAN ELECTION
The American Presidential Election is around the corner and while things look bright for Barrack Obama, I wouldn’t count my chicken yet. Everything can still happen. To make sure that she doesn’t miss the event and can enjoy it together with other nice people, Nancy sent me a mail and asked if I knew of any venues where people will gather to watch the Election. I guess that due to the licence laws it would have to be a private party or a “lock-in” as otherwise you will be kicked out by 02:30!? Does anybody have any suggestion for events in election night? IRISH MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART (IMOCA) – OFFICIAL LAUNCH
I found this event pre-announcement: “The Irish Museum of Contemporary Art (IMOCA) is officially launching their new site/location at 90 Jamestown Road, Dublin 8. The launch is on Friday 07 November 2008. The opening ceremony will be held at IMOCA’s new premises from 18:00-22:00. IMOCA is located a short walk from the Blackhorse Luas stop. I had a look at the website and I am not sure if this “Irish Museum” is – like the National Gallery or like the Irish Museum of Modern Art OWNED and funded by the state or not. In addition I am not too sure where “Contemporary Art” in the IMOCA and “Modern Art” in the IMMA are differentiated. We will hopefully get lots of answers, but the reason for mentioning it in this category is just to let you know that a new museum will open soon and you will then most likely read announcement about exhibitions here. …and if you want to come to the Opening, then do so!, every one is welcome. imoca.ie/imoca2/?p=73

PAULINE KEENA – GREEN ROOM PROJECT AT HUGH LANE GALLERY
“The Green Room Project” is the title of an art exhibition at the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin. The project is an artistic collaboration between visual artist Pauline Keena and a group of mothers who experienced the loss of an infant. Responding to an advertisement by the artist in the ISANDS Newsletter, bereaved mothers embarked on an artistic project through an artists residency in the clinical environment of the Rotunda Hospital in 2007-2008. The exhibition has been shown in the Rotunda until 15 Oct and has now moved to the Hugh Lane Gallery where it will be on show from 21 Oct – 11 Nov. MERLIN JAMES – KERLIN GALLERY
“Birds, Places, Other Things” by Welsh artist Merlin James is the new exhibition in th Kerlin Gallery. The exhibition will run from 23 October – 22 November. Merlin James will show recently completed paintings, often using imagery of birds that has recurred periodically in his work over many years. COLM LAWTON – CROW GALLERY

AURALOG – THISISNOTASHOP
Auralog is a project by Anthony Kelly, Slavek Kwi, Seán McCrum and David Stalling. The ‘First Draft: Audio Postcards’ project is a collection of sound postcards, aural objects framed by silence, which seek to relate the sounds and timeframe of Newfoundland to the specific place of thisisnotashop and redefine the experience of space and time through electronic and actual sound. The sound happens within a multi-channel aural field. Auralog is on show from 21 to 27 October 2008.

VIDEO BLACK – THE JOINERY
‘Video Black: Snow Illusions And Other Questions’ is the title of this group exhibition at The Joinery in Stoneybatter from 22 October to 01 November 2008. “Is this art medium the preserve of the traditional artist armed with camera and concept, or has the medium now been redefined by the individual equipped with the technical know-how and command of software? MARCELO BIGLIA – BACK LOFT

PRE-HISTORY OF THE CRISIS – PROJECT ARTS CENTRE
From 23 October until 29 November 2008 thus show could not be more timely.
As Ireland heads into recession in 2008, cultural and socio-political relationships are beginning to tighten. The open and relatively inclusive web of Irish and migrant workers formed the bedrock beneath the economic boom. But as the stones begin to shift beneath our feet, where will discontent arise and how will Ireland cope with an upsurge of nationalism?
The Prehistory of the Crisis attempts to broach these issues before the period of crisis has hit, at a time when art can have a discreet yet potent voice.
An exhibition project in two parts, The Prehistory of the Crisis begins with an international exhibition at Project Arts Centre in October 2008. The exhibition brings together four artist and artist partnerships from the Netherlands, France, Germany and Serbia, who will all be exhibiting for the first time in Ireland. Each of the works have been produced in relation to the power displacement experienced by both citizens and civil servants, the nebulous group of subjects variously called ‘new nationals’, ‘migrants’ or ‘non-nationals’, and migrants without the right to work, ‘sans papiers’.
Aernout Mik’s video installation Training Ground, Patrick Bernier & Olive Martin’s film MANMUSWAK, Jeanne Faust & Jörn Zehe’s film sonst wer wie du (who else like you), and Andrijana Stojkovic’s film HOME all hone in on individual responses to conditions: the pieces are variously referential of particular situations, but they all activate within us some sort of responsibility for coming to a an autonomous awareness of the complexity of otherness and the complications of ‘living with others’.
The second part of the project, The Prehistory of the Crisis (II) is scheduled for July 2009.

OUT TO LUNCH POETRY SERIES – IRISH WRITERS CENTRE
Following the successful transition from the Bank of Ireland Arts Centre to the Irish Writers’ Centre the Out to Lunch Series continues into 2008. Series Director John McNamee has put together an exciting line up of established and emerging poets. The readings take place every other Friday at 13:15 in the Irish Writers’ Centre in 19 Parnell Square and admission is free. On 24 October Philip Casey will read his poetry.

BURMA PROTEST
Burma Action Ireland is inviting to a candlelit vigil on Fri 24 Oct. On that day, Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma’s pro-democracy leader, will have reached the end of her thirteenth year in detention. A candlelit vigil to mark the occasion and to protest for her immediate release, will be held by Burma Action Ireland. BAI will supply the candles, please bring a jam jar or other suitable container to hold your candle.

RED LINE FESTIVAL – SMITHFIELD

HALLOWFEST – SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY
Sarah Brooks from South Dublin County sent me all the information about the Hallowfest and you should have a good look at this, it really looks good:
“It’s Hallowfest! It’s time for tricks, treats and lotsa spooky fun
South Dublin County will be a magical, spooky place this October Bank Holiday weekend when the area comes alive for South Dublin County Tourism’s “Hallowfest” 2008.
Lots of scarily good fun is planned to celebrate Halloween with the fun kicking off on Sunday 26 October. Library Square Tallaght will host an afternoon of fun filled activity from 15:30 while the following day will see the Festival closing with fun walks to the Hell Fire Club.
On Sunday a streetparty will take place in Library Square Tallaght with fire jugglers, scary characters and performers. A colourful Intercultural Parade will leave from Library Square to a fantastic Fireworks display lighting up the skies from the Institute of Technology Tallaght.
The Bank Holiday Monday activities will be centred around the enchanting and mysterious Hell Fire Club site with a Spooky Fun Treasure Hunt, scary storytelling and activities. 98FM will also broadcast from the car park. A park n ride facility will operate from South Dublin County Council car park leaving on the hour to the walks from 09:00-13:00.
This free event promises to be a fun filled afternoon for all the family.

PROJECTOR COLLECTIVE AT VERSUS? SPACE
White Yellow White is performance-based artwork by Projector Collective and forms part of DEAF 2008. The artists will paint a room first white, then yellow, then white again over a period of 4 days. While painting they will wear new suits with shirt, tie and new shoes. They will strive to avoid getting any paint on their clothes – the object of the performance is to survive the application of the three coats of paint without a blemish to their attire…
It will be the fifth in a series of collaborative projects by the collective. On this occasion Projector Collective features John Carter, Jay Roche, Anthony Kelly and David Stalling.

I was told that there are more OxJam Gigs in Oxfam Home from 15:00-17:30:
“A selection of bands and acoustic sets playing in the setting of Oxfam Home as part of the 2008 Oxjam Festival that is to raise awareness of Oxfam’s campaigns around the globe.” But I was only able to find confirmation for the gig in Parliament Street.

The 29th Dublin Marathon will take place on Mon 27 Oct and will start at 09:00. The start will be in Fitzwilliam Square East and the finish will be in Merrion Square West. ALL IRELAND ELVIS COMPETITION – DUNDRUM TOWN CENTRE
On the Bank Holiday Monday 27 Oct the Dublin leg of the Paddy Power All Ireland Elvis Competition (in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland) is taking place at Dundrum Town Centre. Since there is no better Elvis Performer than Kevin Doyle and since I am totally non-biased on this (I just sing in Kevin Doyle’s backing choir!) ;-) , I am not sure what the purpose of this event is, but here is what the organisers say:
“All Elvis hopefuls are encouraged to arrive at Dundrum Town Centre and compete for a coveted spot in the final. Entry is free to anyone over the age of 18 and the eventual winner will be granted a wildcard entry to the All Ireland Elvis competition, the winner of which will represent Ireland in an International Elvis competition in Memphis in 2009. There will also be some guest Elvis performances to encourage those hoping to impress the judges!
The final of the search for Ireland’s best Elvis is the headline event at the Paddy Power sponsored Bundoran Elvis Festival, which takes place in the Great Northern Hotel in Bundoran between 31 October and 02 November. (For more information visit www.lasbundoran.com.)” Unfortunately the organisers didn’t specify when and where the event is taking place, but it seems from information I found elsewhere that it is taking place from 14:00 at or near the Mill Pond.

PINT & PICTURE AND CINE CAFÉ
Howard Linnane (086-3614787) is back with his weekly film screenings! After a re-grouping and after finding a new venue, Howard is inviting everybody to his “Pint & Picture Show” and his Cine Café. Both events will take place on Mondays from 19:30, however they will take place in alternating weeks. Check with Howard to find out which week it is. In addition, check with him to find out if the event will take place on the Bank Holiday.
Both events are free film screenings in “Toast” in Rathmines (near the clock tower), however the difference between the two events is this:
Pint & Picture consists of a full-length film (feature or documentary) preceded by some quality Irish short films. When possible there is an informal Q&A session with one (or more) of the filmmakers whose work is being screened on the day, immediately after their film is shown.
Cine Café consists of a first half which features a pre-selected set of short films – most of which have been shown at film festivals – and in the second ‘Potluck’ half of the event short films submitted there and then by members of the audience from their own work may also be screened (dvd only pls). No feature-length films will be shown as Cine Café is a ‘shorts-only’ event.

UNACCEPTABLE HARM – FILM SCREENING
27 October until 02 November 2008 is the Global Week of Action to Ban Cluster Bombs. The Global Week of Action takes place one month before the Oslo Signing Conference on 03 December 2008, where more than 100 governments are expected to sign the new Convention on Cluster Munitions that bans the use, production, transfer and stockpiling of cluster bombs.
The Cluster Munition Coalition Ireland is organising a film screening of “Unacceptable Harm” – a documentary by Chris Anderson. The film documents the lasting legacy that the use of cluster munitions has had in eight of the countries where they have been used. It demonstrates the long term suffering caused for affected families and communities and the devastating developmental consequences.
The screening will take place on Wed 29 Oct at 18:00 in Filmbase, Temple Bar, Dublin. The film screening will be preceded by speeches by: Nicholas Twist, Deputy Director, Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Section, Department of Foreign Affairs;
Colm O’Gorman, Director, Amnesty International Ireland; Barbara Raftery, Afri.
A public action will take place outside the venue.
The Global Week of Action is a week dedicated to promote awareness of the treaty and the historic occasion of the signing of the Convention on Cluster Munitions. We are calling on the Irish government to continue the leadership it showed during the Dublin negotiations by encouraging other nations to sign the treaty when it is opened for signature in Oslo in December.

FILM SCREENING – INSTITUTO CERVANTES
The Spanish Cultural Institute in Dublin invites regularly to interesting talks and film screenings. All talks and screenings are usually in Spanish but translation into English or subtitles (for films) will be provided.
On 29 Oct at 18:30 the film ” En el corazón de la tierra (The Heart of the Earth)” will be screened. In 1888 a powerful English company operates for over 30 years the millennial mines of Riotinto in Huelva. Blanca Bosco, a nine-year old, and her inseparable English friend Kathleen, niece of a British executive, witness the miserable working conditions in the mines. These, abundant with juvenile workers, are terribly affected by air contamination and acid rain that devastates the region. The crops, livestock, trees and rivers, and especially the health of children, elderly people, women and men, are endangered permanently by the toxic fumes that make the air unbreathable and destroy the land. The arrival of Maximiliano, a revolutionist who Blanca falls in love with, brings back the hope in the village.

THE ARTS AT AIRFIELD HOUSE TRUST
The Airfield House Trust in Dundrum, Co. Dublin, is inviting to a series of talks accompanying the residency of Seoidín O’Sullivan at Airfield House from mid-November 2008 to mid-February 2009. O’Sullivan’s practice explores ecological sustainability and encompasses drawing, film and photography, with a particular focus on project based work, including the development of The South Circular Road Community Food Garden Project.
In conjunction with the O’Sullivan’s residency Airfield will host three complimentary talks which will draw on the practice and insights of artists who are responding to the natural world and environmental change through their practice. On Wednesday 05 November 2008 at 19:30 artist Beth O’Halloran will discuss the context of her current practice. O’Halloran’s source material ranges from atmospheric weather conditions to quantum mechanics and the Japanese aesthetic paradigm, wabi-sabi, which extols the value of natural materials and variegated surfaces over the mass-produced and man-made. She will also discuss her participation in a recent group show in the USA called ‘Green Horizons’ which focused solely on the artist’s role in environmental protection and awareness.
3. Greening the City: Setting up a Community Garden
On Wednesday 12 November 2008 at 19:30 Darren Malone, ecological activist and initiator of a Belfast based community garden and Seoidín O’Sullivan will share their experiences of two community garden projects. They will refer to trends such as guerrilla gardening and seed bombing and will focus on the process of setting up a community garden and the importance of growing your own food.

Part II of Moving Worlds: Cinemas of Migration runs from 16 October – 20 November, 2008. The third film in this series is “El Tren de La Memoria / The Train of Memory” by Marta Arribas, Ana Pérez. (Spain 2004, 91 min). Spain, in the 1960s: two million Spanish people leave their country, forced to leave, out of need. Their destination: Germany, France, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Half of them are illegal immigrants travelling without work permits. Eighty percent of them are illiterate. They are faced with the obstacles of language and different customs, impeding their progress. Spain, in current times: others in need come in search of help to a prosperous country. Hardly anybody remembers this other story. Josephine does: she remembers her journey in the memory train. Destination: Nuremberg, Germany. A discussion with filmmakers Arta Arribas and Ana Pérez will follow the screening.
The screening (Spanish with English subtitles) is taking place at 18:00 in the Instituto Cervantes – Café Literario in Lincoln House, Lincoln Place, Dublin 2 (at the back of Trinity College near to the National Gallery). OPERA PERFORMANCE – POWERSCOURT CENTRE
Lord Powerscourt moved into his beautiful Townhouse on South William Street in 1774 at a time when Dublin was THE place to be. As a Member of Parliament his Townhouse provided musical soirees in what is now the Town Bride Shop, dinners in the dining room, now Spy and balls in the ballroom which is the Solomon Gallery for Dublin’s elite. The party continues in today’s Powerscourt Townhouse, with monthly musical themes Powerscourt Open the Centre invites to some great music performances. Ruth Kearney from Hothouse in DIT informed me about a VERY interesting series of talks with entrepreneurs over the coming weeks. (Hothouse is an Innovation and Technology Transfer Centre at Dublin Institute of Technology. Hothouse draws in entrepreneurial and academic talent, ignites creativity and provides a dynamic environment to fast-track businesses and technologies to commercial success.)
The discussions will be with Brody Sweeney (O’Briens / Cafe Bar Deli Franchise Group) on 20 Nov and with Eamonn Fallon (Daft.ie) on 03 Dec. The event is free, but you have to register and it is advisable to do that as soon as possible!

SCIENCE WEEK
The Science Week 2008 runs from 09 – 16 Nov and is packed full of really interesting lectures and talks. Please check the website www.scienceweek.ie/sw2008/index.asp as soon as possible! The events and lectures are free, but you need to request tickets and you should do that soon. Demand will be huge. Piaras Kelly, who is organising a free lecture series in the Science Gallery sent me a list of them, but there are many more events, so check the website soon!

What is happening this week! This is the longest Event Guide ever! And I thought we are approaching the quiet period of the year!?!?! I hope nobody will complain that there is not enough free stuff going on in Dublin. :-))))
Don’t forget that Monday is Bank Holiday AND don’t forget that on Sunday morning at 03:00 the clock will go BACK to 02:00, so you have an hour longer to sleep (or to party!) :-)
It is normal for bank holiday weekends to be less busy than other weekends, but there is still lots to do, so if the weather is half way ok, do get out at least for a few hours!
