Hi all!

A busy weekend is ahead of us! Lots of outdoor activities and while there is no big headline festival taking place this weekend, you won’t get bored if you “try out” all the events I am listing this week.

The summer has disappeared and outdoor events are a bit less attractive if you have to expect rain every few minutes but sitting inside won’t make the summer any more interesting! ;-)

The Euro 2008 is over and some of you might wonder what my assessment of it is from a German point of view. Well, I did indicate already last week, that while I have a preference for Germany, I would be more than happy to see Spain win the game and in the end, I definitely think that the better team won. So, congratulations to all the Spanish members of the Dublin Event Guide Community. :-) But, hey, don’t expect that next time we will send our weak team AGAIN! ;-)

A big welcome as well to all the new members of the Dublin Event Guide Community!! Approx. 20 people join us every week! On facebook the Dublin Event Guide group has grown to 1622 members (www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=7276986445) and this weekly e-mail is currently being sent to 1450 people. We are growing and the consequence is that I am getting more and more information about free events to tell you about. Do you realise that with the newsletter subscribers alone we could fill the National Concert Hall one and a half times?? Not bad!
For all new subscribers, just a quick recap: This Event Guide informs you about free events in the Greater Dublin area, originally only focused on the weekend, I now include a good few events during the week as well. The Event Guide is written by myself (and on my own), it is just a hobby (that takes a lot more time than initially intended) and I do not get any financial reward for writing this mail every week. TANGO CLASSES
I have heard nothing but praise about John and Erika’s Tango classes and this week you have another opportunity to win a pair of tickets for a beginner’s class:

CULTURE BUS
Last week I reported that a free shuttle bus service, the “Cultúr Bus” will link some of Dublin’s main cultural attractions every Sunday (12:00-17:00) from end of June until the end of September. What I didn’t tell you last week, however, and it causes a LOT of confusion, is that this is not a separate and new bus, but it is operated by the “Hop on-Hop off” Bus operator “Dublin Tour Bus” (the red double decker tour bus).

PHOENIX PARK BUS
Another new bus service is the Phoenix Park Shuttle. It connects Phoenix Park with Heuston Station and operates every 20 minutes 7 days a week (07:00-19:00 on weekdays and 10:00-19:00 at weekends). The bus is operated by Aircoach and is funded by the OPW. It is not completely free, but the small price of EUR 1 that you have to pay for a ticket gets you a tickets tha tis valid the whole day for unlimited travel on the Phoenix Park Shuttle bus.
The bus travels from the Luas bridge near Heuston Station (Parkgate Street) to the Zoo, then along the back road to Cabra and Ashtown gates, over to Farmleigh, down to the papal cross and the visitor’s centre before returning to Parkgate Street.

POINT THEATRE
Many of you know (or knew) the Point Theatre on North Wall Quay in the docklands. It was one of the largest indoor concert venues in Ireland with 8500 seats. The Point Depot which housed the Point Theatre was built in 1878 as a train depot and was in the late 1980s bought by developer Harry Crosbie and turned into a concert venue. Since August 2007 the Point Depot is being renovated and will be turned into a 13,000 seater concert venue. And on Wednesday it has been announced that it will be called “The O2” after the mobile phone company O2 bought the naming rights. I think it is a silly name, but it seems that O2 paid a handsome amount of money for it. The other news that was announced is that there are plans to let O2 customers book tickets up to 48 hours before other people are allowed to buy tickets for an event. It remains to be seen what effect this will have. It is planned to re-open the Point Theatre a.k.a. The O2 in December 2008.

I told you last week about Farmleigh House and about the “Farmleigh House Summer Season” full of events. All of the events are free, but all concerts and the Drive-in.-Movies are free, but ticketed. HISTORY LOST – MULTIMEDIA EXHIBITION
The Sixth World Archaeological Congress and the Hellenic Foundation for Culture invite you to view the multimedia exhibition “History Lost” about the illicit trade of antiquities. 3RD YEAR CERAMIC STUDENTS – GALLERY ZOZIMUS

JAKI IRVINE – KERLIN GALLERY

GROUP EXHIBITION – BUDDA BAG
On 04 July 2008 from 18:30 until 21:30 the launch of Budda Bag Dublin’s “First Friday” Photography Exhibitions will take place. On the first Friday of each month Budda Bag (the shop in the Italian Quarter with the massive and most comfortable Budda Bags) will be holding an exhibition showing the works of some of the most talented photographers working in Dublin today. EUROPEAN GLANCE AT FRANCE – EUROPEAN UNION HOUSE
On the occasion of the French Presidency of the European Union, the Cultural Service of the Embassy of France has invited 27 photographers, representing each of the 27 member states of the Union, to share their vision of France. The exhibition is hosted by the European Union House in Dublin. It presents different perspectives on France and it is an invitation to discover multiple talents, reflections as well as testimonies of European cultural diversity. In September 2008, a second exhibition will follow on this one, showcasing the perspectives on Europe by 27 French photographers.

PLANES, TRAINS, AUTOMOBILES . PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION
Planes, trains and automobiles is the title of the National Photographic Archive’s latest exhibition which features images drawn from various Library collections. Among the arresting images included in the ‘planes’ section of the exhibition is an historic photograph of Amelia Earhart, the first woman aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic from west to east. The photograph, which was taken in Derry in May 1932, shows her standing beside her plane, the Princess Xenia, just after she arrived from Newfoundland. Also featuring in this section of the exhibition is a photograph of the first flight taking off from Baldonnell airport in September 1927; the arrival of Aer Lingus’ first aircraft, the Padraig, at Dublin Airport in 1958; a photograph of the first plane landing at Cork Airport in 1961, and images of seaplanes at the Foynes seaplane terminal County Limerick in 1938.
The ‘trains’ section of the exhibition features images of early steam trains including a Lawrence collection photograph taken on Ballydehob Viaduct around 1890. Also featured is a photograph of a crash at Harcourt Street Station in Dublin in February 1910 showing the steam train engine embedded in the station wall; the last train leaving Harcourt Street Station in 1958; the launch of the DART in 1984 by the then Taoiseach Dr Garret FitzGerald, and various photographs of trains and drivers on long-since closed sections of railway lines in County Meath, Louth, Dublin and Kildare.

BRAY SUMMER FESTIVAL
The Bray Summer Festival will kick-off with the first event on Fri 04 July: “Yurodny” will perform on the Mermaid Civic Plaza from 13:00-14:00. At this open air concert “a fiery brand of gypsy dances, winding Arabic melodies and Balkan brass anthems will put the audience through their paces and usher in the summer festival season.”

MOVIES ON MEETING HOUSE SQUARE
The Open Air Movie Screenings in Temple Bar are commencing on Fri 04 July with the first screening. The Opening Gala on Fri 04 July at 21:30 will see the screening of “The Commitments” with live music from one of Ireland’s best known contemporary bands. Tickets available from 28 June. Every Friday free Sahaja Yogais taught and practised for free in Temple Bar. A free Sahaja Yoga Meditation program is available to members of the public every Friday at 19:30 at 4/5 Eustace Street (bell 3, next to the IFI), Temple Bar.
Sahaja Yoga is a unique method of meditation based on an experience called Self Realization that can occur within each human being. 5m2 ART PROJECT – BACK LOFT
Going by the number of mails that I have received, this seems to be one of the most interesting Art Projects of the year. At least five Dublin Event Guide Community members are directly or indirectly involved and I will do my best to make it to this event. It promises to be VERY interesting.
Titled “Art by the square metre”, the press release describes that this new international art project showcases visual and sensory delights within the confines of 5 metres squared. And it continues “One of Dublin’s most imaginative and exciting new cultural events is to take place over this weekend among the cobblestone streets around Christchurch Cathedral. The concept is simple – 50 artists will perform or exhibit within a space of 5 square metres. The artists and performers, from eleven different countries around the world, are set to showcase their talents in a designated space at La Catedral Studios on this Saturday 05 and Sunday 06 July. This multimedia event will encompass painters, photographers, writers, poets, comedians, actors, film-makers, dancers and musicians from a variety of backgrounds.
Francesca La Morgia is the organiser of this event and says “Months of planning has gone in to the event and it’s a bit like a music festival, exhibition, theatre, cinema and concert all rolled into one. Although the artists’ space is confined to 5 metres squared, their creative abilities will hopefully prove limitless. Some of the pieces will be on sale at the event and their promises to be no shortage of choice and originality this weekend.”
Entrance to the event is free and refreshments will be available at the event. 5m2 will take place this Saturday 05 July from 15:00-23:00 and on Sunday 06 July from 12:00-21:00 at the Back Loft c/o la Catedral Studios 7/11 St. Augustine St. Dublin 8.

On Sat 05 July from 11:00-17:00 Farmleigh House will host an Antique Valuation & Rare Book Fair in a Marquee, the Cowshed Theatre & the Ballroom.
“Farmleigh in association with the Irish Antique Dealers Association presents a free Antiques Valuation and Rare Book Fair on Saturday 5th July for all the family. Most people posses items and don’t realise their value, where they came from, who made them and how. Experts from the Irish Antique Dealers Association along with two presenters (Niall Mullen and George Stacpoole) of the RTE programme ‘The Dealers’ will be on hand to give free valuations on all the items you have been wanting to know about. Rare Book Fair: Sat 5th July 11:00-17:00 Farmleigh in association with Éamonn de Burca from De Búrca Rare Books will hold a bookfair and valuation of books, maps, prints, manuscripts and ephemera items. Bring along those literary treasures for a free valuation. At the antiquarian bookfair there will be over 20 of Ireland’s leading antiquarian booksellers offering a breathtaking range of rare, secondhand and out-of-print books, maps, photographs, lertters and manuscripts. Prices range from a few euro to several thousands. It will be a suitable venue for connoisseurs and would-be collectors to browse and buy. Please note that the Rare Book Fair is on Saturday 5th July only.
URBAN BEACH – GEORGE’S DOCK
“Life is a Beach!” is the theme for Dublin Dockland’s Urban Beach. George’s Dock (just behind the main IFSC buildings along the Liffey and right beside the chq building) will be transformed into Dublin’s first Urban Beach. The organiser’s description says “This tropical oasis will be the home to sizzling summer activities for the whole family. Complete with beach cabins, showers, lounge chairs, beach umbrellas, and a refreshment beach hut, the beach will have daily activities to suit everyone’s fancy. Kiddies will have their own ‘baby beach’ area for making sandcastles. Spend lunchtime practising yoga or tai chi, play a relaxing game of chess, try your hand at boules or bocce or just soak in the sunshine. Oh the lazy, hazy days of summer, let’s hope we have some!”
I had a look at the Urban Beach while it is still “under construction” and I will definitely go there again over the next two weeks. The “beach” is on the platform in George’s Dock and I am interested to see how the finished scene will look like. An interesting idea! Pity that the weather in Ireland is not the most supportive of such good ideas. The Urban Beach will take place from 04 July -20 July from 12:00-20:00 every day.
As far as evening events are concerned I found this list for themed beach parties: Trash & Treasure Blind Date Night (5th July), Tango Night (10+17 July), Brazil Night (11+18 July), Salsa Night (12+19 July). All special events are free, but there is limited capacity, so you should come early. www.ddda.ie

INDIAN FOOD FESTIVAL – TEMPLE BAR
The India Club Ireland is organizing an Indian Food Festival (MELA) on Sat 05 July from 12:00-17:00 in the Cultivate Center, 15-19 Essex Street West,Temple Bar, Dublin 8. The organisers say “The day should be very enjoyable for families. There will be Bollywood Indian film music, stalls with a range of various Indian vegetarian and non vegetarian home made gourmet food. There will be stalls of henna paintings, summer clothes, Indian jewelry, artifacts, and many interesting items for everyone. It is a day out with your family to experience a great deal of Indian Culture in Dublin. The new weekly multicultural Indoor/Outdoor Farmers Market in Smithfield has been launched on the 22 June and will grow over the coming weeks to up to 100 stands. The 4th ToeJam Car Boot Sale is meant to take place this Sat 05 July on the car park of the Bernard Shaw pub in 11-12 South Richmond Street. Well, at least that’s what it said on posters that I saw at the 3rd Car Boot Sale in May. I haven’t seen any confirmation for this next Car Boot Sale, but if it is not toooo inconvenient for you, try to make it there to check it out. It is free to get in and to browse. ;-) Falafel will be sold and if the weather is ok, they might even have a DJ or some live acts there.
I was at the 3rd Car Boot Sale and it was totally surreal (in a good way). I entered the pub and since it was a bright day, I went from glaring sunshine into a dark pub. You can’t see much due to the difference in light and search for the exit to the “car park”. You find it through the smoking area, open the door from the smoking area to the car park and are back in glaring sunshine and suddenly you are in the middle of this hippie-like, unplanned-70s-themed Car Boot Sales in the middle of Dublin and you feel as if the dark corridor in the pub was something like a time machine that transported you back 30+ years or so and catapulted you from Dublin to San Francisco. Weird! :-) I absolutely loved it. The “car park” is quite small, the traders are all different and the atmosphere is just surreal. Hehehe, I will go again on Saturday. Yes, I know the sun will most likely not shine and it is similarly unlikely that the same experience will be repeated, but it still will be interesting, I hope. ;-)

UCD CARNIVAL DAY – UNIVERSITY COLLEGE DUBLIN
UCD’s Carnival Day 2008 will place on Saturday 05 July 2008 from 14:00-18:00 at the UCD Sports Centre and surrounding areas. There will be plenty of fun and entertainment for all the family. THESE FUTURE KINGS AND QUEENS – DUBLIN CAMERA CLUB
The Dublin Camera Club is presenting a photography exhibition in their gallery in 10 Lower Camden Street, Dublin 2. According to the organisers “‘These Future Kings and Queens’ is an exhibition of travel portrait photography of children, by photographer Norman Stevenson. It provides an intimate look at the life of children through a collection of environmental portraits in black & white and colour taken during the photographer’s travels to Asia, South America, Africa and Central America. Last November while travelling around Kenya the photographer spent some time with some street kids in Kisumu (West Kenya). While there, he visited a Drop-In Centre run by a Charity Organisation called HOVIC (Hope for Victoria Children) who are working to help these kids. All the money raised from this exhibition will be sent directly to the centre and will be used to benefit kids who are trying to break from a life on the streets of the city.” The gallery is open each Saturday 11:00-17:00 from 14 June – 12 July. TECHNOTHREADS – SCIENCE GALLERY
Last weekend I finally went to the TechnoThreads exhibition in the Science Gallery and they have some amazing clothes there. The Science Gallery in the Naughton Building at the back of Trinity College (near Pearse Street DART Station) is still showing TechnoThreads: “Shirts that send hugs from a loved one, spray-on dresses a printed dress made of polymers and semi-living clothes. TechnoThreads is all about the creative sparks that fly when the worlds of fashion and science collide. The exhibition, running from 26th April – 26th July 2008, offers you a glimpse into the future of fashion in a world where Biotech and Nanotech are combined with traditional craft and Haute Couture skills.” Admission is FREE. HORSE MARKET – SMITHFIELD
If you are new to Dublin or if you are a keen photographer who likes unusual and untypical scenes or if you just want to go back in time on a Sunday morning, you should take the opportunity this Sunday 06 July to visit the Smithfield Horse Market. Only once a month, every first Sunday of each month this unique event takes place. Close to sunrise, Smithfield Square fills with hundreds of horses, as well as scores of dealers, keen to make some cash on a few quick sales. The scene is like no other in Ireland and if you survive the early hours, I am sure you will leave this event full of stories to tell to your friends and families. Mind the galloping horses and the horse droppings and stay safe if you go there, but have fun and tell me all about it afterwards! :-)
Another reason for going could be that for a while already there are plans to move or close this market completely. That means that you never know how many more opportunities you have to experience the Horse Market.

HERBERT PARK BIG DAY OUT
Herbert Park in Ballsbridge (Dublin 4) was built in 1907 and was then part of the Great Exhibition. The Great Exhibition was something like an Irish Expo and must have been quite big and important at the time. Last year for the 100th anniversary the Herbert Park Big Day Out was invented and coincided last year with the Car Free Day. This year the Herbert Park festivities will take place on Sun 06 July (10:00-19:00) and are part of Dublin City Council’s Summer in Dublin programme.
The event is described like this: “Located in historic Herbert Park, the event will feature a wide variety of entertainment for all ages. Marvel at the Victorian puppet theatre, or take a moment to enjoy a musical performance at the Victorian Bandstand. Try out some of the vintage fairground attractions including a Victorian Carousel in this extravaganza of nostalgia. Interact with our Victorian costumed characters who will inform and direct you to the next attraction. The event will feature an extensive market with many food vendors offering tasty treats to tantalise the taste buds. A seated picnic area will be available to relax and enjoy a leisurely Sunday lunch.”

OUTDOOR DANCE WORKSHOPS – DUN LAOGHAIRE, HARBOUR PLAZA
On Sunday 06 July (12:00-17:00), Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown Events Summer Season host free outdoor dance workshops on the Harbour Plaza in Dun Laoghaire featuring Contemporary, Jazz, Tango and Hip Hop dance styles. This event is taking place in conjunction with the Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council Arts Department as an extension of the Youth Dance Festival which takes place in the Pavilion Theatre on Saturday 05 July. The Outdoor Dance Workshops are suitable for adults and teenagers from aged 12 upwards and admission is free but places are limited. The Workshops will be opened at 12:00 with a 15 minute performance by Spanish group Debla Danza; a group of talented dancers from Northern Spain constantly exploring new forms of dance and artistic expression. Workshops will include a contemporary dance workshop from 12:15-13:15 led by Jessica Rowell and Lorcan O Neill. From 13:30-14:30, Latin Jazz expert Selma Daniel from Brazil will lead the Jazz dance workshop. Modern Jazz with Latin influences develops strength, flexibility, balance and coordination with modern dance. The Tango workshop kicks off at 14:45-15:45 and is hosted by tango sensation Simona Zaino from Argentina. The final dance workshop will be led by Hip Hop expert Rob Dias from 16:00-17:00. The workshops will be closed with another mesmerising performance by Debla Danza at 17:15. These Dance workshops are a fantastic opportunity to learn from dance experts and are free to all who wish to participate. Registration for the workshops will take place on the day at the Ferry Harbour Plaza. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

ROLLERBLADING IN PHOENIX PARK
The Rollerblading “Meet&Train” is meeting this again in Phoenix Park. Last week’s get together on Grand Canal Square was for a number of reasons a “non-event” so I with a bit of luck and some good-will from the weather gods, we can have a good session in Phoneix Park again. IRVING CHORALE – ST. ANN’S CHURCH
The Irving Chorale from Irving, Texas will perform a varied programme of music, including sacred works by American composers such as Rene Clausen and Lloyd Pfautsch, American Spirituals, Broadway show tunes and Irish and American folk songs. The Irving Chorale of Irving, Texas, was founded in 1987 as a community chorus, giving its first concert with the Irving Symphony in celebration of the bicentennial of the US constitution. The choir went from strength to strength including an invitation to Portsmouth, England in 1994 to participate in ceremonies marking the 50th anniversary of D-Day. This formed part of a tour of Wales and England. The choir has also received invitations to perform in Canada, Scotland and Austria. As the choir has grown so has their reputation and repertoire which now includes major works such as Handel’s Messiah and Beethoven’s Mass in C.
This concert is the initial concert on a tour taking in performances at Muckross House, Collegiate Church of St Nicholas in Galway, Waterford City Hall and Glendalough.
The concert will take place on Sunday 06 July at 20:00 in St. Ann’s Church, Dawson Street, Dublin 2. Admission is free, it says. But then the ominous sentence “All proceeds to The Society of St. Vincent de Paul.” So I am not sure if the “proceeds” are from a collection, but maybe that would make sense.

Sunday Roast is the event in Thomas Reads The Oak in Dame Street/Parliament Street every Sunday from 19:00. On offer are free live music, games & roast potatoes.

PINT AND PICTURE FILM CLUB
Howard Linnane (086 3614787) is in co-operation with the pub “Russells of Ranelagh” running a film club. The film club shows screenings of Irish short films and feature films for free on the big screen in “Russells” in Ranelagh.
The next event is on Wed 09 July at 14:00 again, however, please ring Howard prior to going there to make sure that the event is on and to find out which film will be shown. (Russells of Ranelagh is on the main street, just down from the Luas station and across from the Triangle).

BIPOLAR DISORDER – AWARE PUBLIC LECTURE
Aware, a voluntary organization formed in 1985, whose aims are to assist everybody who is directly affected by depression is providing another public lecture on Wed 09 July. The topic is “The Highs and Lows of Bipolar Disorder” and the speaker is Dr Patirck McKeon, Consultant Psychiatrist. The lecture takes place at the Lecture Theatre, Swift Centre, St. Patrick’s Hospital, James’s St, D8 at 19:30 sharp.

MEDECINS SANS FRONTIERES – INFORMATION EVENING
On 10 July from 19:00-20:00, Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders), 9-11 Upper Baggot Street, Dublin 2 are inviting to an information evening. “Winner of the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize, MSF is the leading independent humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency medical aid in more than 60 countries around the world. MSF provides emergency life-saving relief to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters or exclusion from health care, irrespective of race, religion or political affiliation. On 10 July, we invite you to join us for an informal evening presentation by a returned MSF field volunteer, a short film and a question and answer session to learn more about how you can become part of MSF’s field work. MOVING WORLDS – MOVIE SCREENINGS
“Moving Worlds – Cinemas of Migration” is a film series on migration and integration and is the topic of a series of Film Screenings, Discussions and Workshops from May to November 2008. Feature films and documentaries from Austria, France, Germany, Israel, Scotland, Spain, United Kingdom and USA will be screened weekly.
The film screenings will be complemented by discussions and workshops.

Moving Worlds has been organised by the Forum on Migration and Communications (FOMACS) at DIT, in association with various cultural institutes (incl. The title of the film is “Wesh wesh, qu’est ce qui se passé?” (Dir: Rabah Ameur-Zaïmè, France 2002, 83 min). ARTIST TALK: INÊS AMADO – IMMA
In this talk Inês Amado introduces the history of her project Bread Matters, its ramifications, as well as other related events, such as the collaboration with Cais – the Portuguese magazine equivalent to the Big Issue. For further information about Inês Amado see www.ines-amado.com. The event takes place on 10 July 2008 at 17:30 in the Lecture Room in the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Kilmainham Hospital.
Born in Portugal, Amado works and lives in England. Her work spans several media; sculpture, video, site-specific installation, and performance, with a particular interest in interdisciplinary and collaboration through dialogue, interaction and exchange between artists, non-artists and community groups. RATLLE THE BOARDS – BRAY SUMMER FEST
The Bray Summer Fest continues with a Friday lunch time event. “Rattle The Boards” is playing traditional (i.e. irish) music at the Mermaid Civic Plaza on 11 July from 13:00-14:00. The organisers describe “As their name suggests this is a group that will have its audience on their feet and rattling the floorboards! DAMBÈ (IRISH/MALIAN CONCERT) – TEMPLE BAR
A night of Irish and African musical celebrations is taking place on 23 July as part of the Documentary Film – Dambé – The Mali Project. For one night only Malian, Tuareg and nomadic culture and music will be celebrated with a line up of special Irish and Malian musicians from the film. Artists performing on the night include Afel Bocoum and Alkibar, Liam O’Maonlaí, Paddy Keenan and Tinariwen plus special guest Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh. This is a free event and all profits will go towards the Tuareg fund for development Taghreft Tinariwen and the hospital in Niafunké (hometown of Afel and Alkibar). It confuses me slightly that it says that the event is free and in the same sentence they say that all profits will go to the Tuareg fund etc. So, maybe double-check with the Temple Bar Cultural Information Centre (01 677 2255) before you go there to collect tickets.
