Hi all!

Last week was full of big and important political news. On Tuesday the Dáil, the Irish Parliament, was dissolved, which means that a general election is coming up (on 25 Feb). To many of you, this means….nothing! ;-) Not because you don’t care, but because you are not permitted to get involved. If, like me, you are a foreigner in Ireland, then you are allowed to pay taxes, but you are not allowed to vote or to be voted into the parliament. For some, that is very frustrating, but if you are very passionate about Irish politics and you want to contribute, then talk to your party of choice. I know that a number of parties welcome support no matter what nationality you have. I am quit passionate about some aspects of Irish politics, but I can not find a single party that represents my opinion. Am I too picky? ;-) I probably have to start my own party. :-P

Until that happens, I keep myself busy with other things. ;-) In 2008 and 2009 I organised a Dublin Event Guide Party on Valentine’s Day evening. The trigger was a friend who told me about the stress and emotional pain Valentine’s Day was causing her. So I thought filling that void with a nice memory and a fun activity might appeal to many and it turned out that I was right. People in relationships and people not in relationships came to these two “Alternative Valentine’s Day Parties” because even if you are in a relationship, going out for dinner etc on Valentine’s Day is often not much fun. Importantly, this Valentine’s Day Event Guide Party is not intended as a “Singles Night” with all its connotations. Now, back to you. This year the 14 Feb is on a Monday. For many not the prime “going out day”. Others might already have plans or feel obliged to come up with some other plans than a Event Guide Party. For that reason I need you to tell me if you would come to an Event Guide Party on Mon 14 Feb. If there will be enough people that send me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject “14Feb Party”, then I will quickly organise something. If the critical mass is not there, then we will have another party at another time later in the year. So, if you would come on 14 Feb, send a mail!

This week, I will be at a seminar from Friday until Sunday, so again no Dublin culture for me. Lately I seem to write more about it than I experience myself, but I hope you are kept busy with all the events!

If I had the time, I would go to the following events this week. I would definitely be at the Chinese New Year Festival over the weekend. Then I would love to see the Musik+X exhibition on Saturday in Dun Laoghaire. On Sun I would probably go to the meeting in Dun Laoghaire that is discussing the alternative to the Festival of World Cultures.
On Tuesday the Pop Up Bank event is particularly interesting for people that work on their own business idea or have started a business. In the evening the Milk & Cookie Storytelling Evening will most likely be fun. Then on Thursday the Met Society Lecture about Irish Lighthouses sounds interesting and later that evening the Battle of the Bands in Hardrock Café is an event I would try to attend.

IRELAND 2011 ANGLING SHOW – TICKET COMPETITION

If you get an unsolicited (unwanted and unrequested) call from anybody trying to tell you that your computer is virus infected or anything similar that has to do with your computer. Do NOT do ANYTHING the caller asks you to do. There is an increasing number of reports that people are rang and are then asked to provide information to the caller or download files. (Sometimes Microsoft is mentioned as the alleged employer of the caller, but not always.) These calls are a scam and the best way of protecting yourself is by putting the phone down. A number of my friends received such calls and now Microsoft is officially warning as well

6.2mio HOUSE IN DALKEY SELLS FOR 1.4mio
A house in Dalkey that was valued in 2007 at EUR 6.2mio sold now for EUR 1.4mio.
Not great news if you own a 6mio house, but if you are looking for a house to busy and don’t have one yet, this is good news for you. The slide in house prices has been more pronounced at the top end of the market, though, so if you are only looking for a more modest house it might not be such a huge drop.
This is not a single occurrence only: In the same month that house in Dalkey was put originally on the market in May 2007, a large house at 43 Ailesbury Road was sold at about EUR 8.5 mio. And that house was last week put back on the market asking for EUR 2.95 mio. Keep saving! :-)

CITY DISCS CLOSING
City Discs, a seemingly quite popular CD shop in Temple Lane in Temple Bar is closing. I don’t really know the shop myself, but a number of people told me that they really liked it. WATERSTONES BOOKSHOPS CLOSING
The two Waterstones Bookshops in Dublin, in Dawson Street and in Jervis Street Shopping Centre, will close on Sunday. HMV, who owns Waterstones and Hodges Figgis across the road in Dawson Street is planning to close 50 stores (out of 300) in Britain and Ireland in the next 12 month and the two Waterstones ones are in the first batch. Hodges Figgis will not be affected. If you have vouchers left over or if you had ordered books, hurry! By the way, I find it actually surprising that they kept TWO seemingly competing bookstores open for so long in the same street just across from each other. SUNDAY TRIBUNE IN TROUBLE
The Sunday Tribune, one of 17 (!!) Sunday newspapers in Ireland is in receivership, which means that a receiver has been appointed who will now see if the company can be sold to stay alive. The company did loose 2.5 mio per year and has since it started to publish the newspaper in 1992 never made a profit. With so many closures and company trouble around, it is difficult to imagine that there could be good news along the same lines, but there is! New figures show that 96 companies went out of business in January, but this is a 13% drop compared with the same month last year and the January figure was down by 28% compared with December. In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The exhibition was originally only intended for students learning German at secondary level. However, due to massive public interest, the organisers have decided to open County Hall for the next two Saturdays for the general public to experience and enjoy the exhibition. This is an event with a difference. Imbolc is a pagan festival that marks the mid-point between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox and the Imbolc Ceremonies on Sat start with a spiral ceremony to bring the seeds of the ideas developed in the long winter months and plant them so that they may be fruitful in the everyday world. After that a baby naming ceremony will take place (Catherine, the mother of the baby, has told me that everybody is welcome) and finally food sharing, circle dancing and games will take place. It sounds very different than what we normally experience and I would be very interested to experience it. Unfortunately I won’t be able to, but I hope that some of you will get a chance to attend! You are asked to bring household candles, vegetarian food for sharing and non alcoholic drink to share. And one thing you don’t need: Money! Children are very welcome to the event.

OVER-SENSITIVE IRISH PRESIDENT??

It was a commemoration service of the Irish Family Service Network (fsn.ie), a vast number of organisations of and for family members of drug users. Not the most uplifting event, I have to say, but very much appreciated by the parents and family members of victims of abuse. Mary McAleese was meant to attend, but due to “presidential protocol”, she as not allowed to be there from the beginning. Instead, she arrived 30 minutes later because the Irish President is not allowed to be in a room where a politician speaks. So she arrived after Minister Pat Carey said his few words. I find it odd that a president has to be protected from hearing a political speech! Sure, sometimes politicians talk so much nonsense that sensitive ears should be protected, but I didn’t realise that a president’s ears are more sensitive than the rest! And considering that it is the president who appoints ministers, she is – in a way – their boss. And it is surprising that the boss will NOT BE ALLOWED to hear the politicians talk! She wouldn’t have to clap or say anything or agree to anything. I am just talking about sitting in a room (in this case: a church) where a democratically elected and presidentially appointed person talks. Some rules and protocols are VERY odd!
