Hi all!

Snow, snow, snow! I think that describes the last week best. We NEARLY have forgotten about stuff like IMF, Budget and debts and that is a good thing. Were I am at the moment, I see a lovely picturesque Winter Wonderland outside and it could hardly be more beautiful. Sure, if you have to the office everyday or drive long distances etc you saw the other side of the weather as well, but let’s be honest, there IS something magical about snow and I hope you will get a chance every now and then to get a glimpse of it.

[ad]

Hey, you have heard from me yesterday already. Did you read the mail? You should! :-) It is your personal invitation to the Dublin Event Guide Christmas Party. There won’t be a free bar and free food, but admission is free! ;-) And it will be as good as you will make it, so I expect it will be REALLY great! We will meet in Dandelion Café Bar at St. Stephen’s Green and the event will go ahead no matter how bad the weather will be. I have an area in Dandelion reserved for us and will be there from 20:00-00:00. Drop in and stay the whole evening or stay a while and bring your friends as well. Everybody is welcome. I don’t expect 7600+ people, but I know that some very interesting and nice people will be there. Will you make it too? Here is the Facebook Event Page where you can let me know if you will come: www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=169309546436772

And one other thing: Today’s Event Guide could turn out a little smaller than usually because unfortunately the back pain I had has returned with a vengeance and I will try to reduce the writing time to below 15 hours. Sitting is the most painful! I will be repaired soon, so don’t worry ;-) just forgive me for taking a few shortcuts this week.

Let your friends be part of our growing community and get them to subscriber by sending a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with subject SUBSCRIBE DEG. This could help when you spread the word: www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf

In addition: Join the more than 1800 people that LIKE the Dublin Event Guide on Facebook at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide You will get last minute updates and event reminders there.

Today’s Feel Good Slot is completely different than the typical uplifting videos I often link to. As I said about the snow, I think there is a huge amount of magic in Nature and today I want to remind you of the magic and beauty of the nature around us. Yes, there is always a danger aspect as well to Nature, but I leave it to you if you prefer to see beauty or danger (Hint: This is the “Feel Good Slot”!!! :-) ) This video shows the lightning over Dublin a few days ago, on 27 November. www.youtube.com/watch?v=AL4vou2tars

The Christmas spirit has found the hearts of some of you! :-) Thank you for your donations: Brian L., David L., Mary K. and Alison P. Wonderful people! Every bit of help is very much appreciated and you can spread some Christmas Cheer by donating some money. I can guarantee that the money will be used for keeping the Event Guide on the road and will not be diverted to any Christmas Presents. ;-) You donate here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm :-)

In addition to the wonderful people that have donated, Flamenco Indalo, a passionate group that supports and promotes the art of Flamenco in Ireland, have renewed their sponsorship. Check out the Dance Workshops that they are running in the coming week, which are culminating in a Flamenco Spectacular next Sat 11 Dec.: www.flamencoindalo.com. (Not free, but well worth it.)

This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent. ;-) You can donate any amount you wish to help with or – as an option – you can now chose a yearly “subscription” on www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm
Instead whereby a 12 Euro donation will automatically be carried out every year.

You can donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer money to my bank, just drop me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

Taxback.com is offering a free 4 year tax refund assessment to all Dublin Event Guide Subscribers. If you answer “YES” to any of the questions below you could be looking at a nice lump sum from the Revenue Commissioners: Did you…
…work part-time or full-time? …pay your GP or dentist? …rent property in the last 4 years? …pay tuition fees? …pay bin charges? …been on maternity leave?

This week I will go on a tour of Christmas Markets on Saturday and/or Sunday. Fitzwilliam Square, Docklands and maybe as well Belvedere College and Smithfield. On Saturday evening? Guess, where I will be? I will meet you in Dandelion! ;-) On Sunday the National Museum in Kildare Street has an interesting Christmas re-enactment and I would love to see that.
During the week, I will try to go to the “Your Buisness Day” on Thursday and to the EYP Christmas Party next Friday.

CHRISTMAS FM – RADIO STATION
Like in the previous two years, Christmas FM was launched again a few days ago. On FM 89.9 and on the Internet (christmasfm.ie/) you can listen to Christmas Songs 24 hours a day. All people working at the station are volunteers and the money raised in the time until Christmas will go to the charity Barnardos. Once we have arrived at Christmas, the station will disappear again, so enjoy it while it lasts. They have a free iPhone app as well, if you are interested.

BAD NEWS FOR VODAFONE CUSTOMERS ON HOLIDAYS
Until 24 Nov 2010 you only paid 99 cent per day for Data Roaming on your Vodafone Pay as You Go phone. A brilliant price that was – as it should be when travelling from Vodafone to Vodafone – the same as at home in Ireland. However, quietly and sneakily Vodafone has increased this now to a new price of EUR 2.99 per day. Hey, that is a whopping 300% of the old price! CRAZY! For a lousy 50 Mbyte! I use a Pay as You Go phone for data when I am abroad and will definitely look for another service provider now. www.vodafone.ie/internet-broadband/internet-on-your-mobile/abroad Even if you are using a bill pay phone, it seems that the DAILY surcharge is now EUR 2! – I didn’t get a chance to check all other service provider yet, but watch out for significantly higher charges if you are planning holidays over Christmas and intend to access the Internet.

POINT VILLAGE CHRISTMAS MARKET CANCELLED
You should have read it here before, because I wrote about it about it last week, but in case you missed it, please note that the Point Village Christmas Market, which was advertised in a big way though lots of online channels, is cancelled. It seems that the organisers could not assure the traders that there would be sufficient business and this is no surprise to anyone who has ever looked at a map of Dublin and has seen how far out the Point Village Market is. The weekly market is closed as well at least until Spring, but watch this space! www.pointvillagemarket.ie/content/home

MORE RESTAURANT CLOSURES
I wish I could report about openings and launches here, but there still seems to be more closures than launches. This one will be old news for some of you, I am not the fastest at times when it comes to tracking the status of bars and restaurants: About 3 weeks ago N ude Café (this name will get me into trouble with Spam filters again. :-S) closed its doors in Suffolk Street, after all other branches had closed already bit by bit earlier. The café was known for fresh organic produce, smoothies and vegetarian food and was owned by Bono’s brother, Norman Hewson. Seemingly the chain was in trouble since 2007. www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/finance/2010/1106/1224282791458.html

HELP CHANGING DUBLIN…AND WIN A HELICOPTER FLIGHT
Only 7 more days to enter this: It will all close on 10 Dec. Make sure that you share your opinion: Dublin City wants to improve the city. For “Your Dublin, Your Voice”, you are asked to complete a short survey before Fri 10 Dec to share your Experience of Living, Working or Studying in Dublin. If you help with your opinions you will be entered into a prize draw and two lucky winners will each receive a voucher for two people for a scenic helicopter tour of Dublin. Go to the survey here: surveys.delve-surveys.com/dccpanel?friendref=133545975
Once you register and complete the first survey you will then become a member of the ‘Dublin Opinion Panel’. As a panel member you may be contacted up to four times per year to complete a short survey about Dublin…and you can win more prizes.
For more information about the whole initiative check www.dublincity.ie/YOURCOUNCIL/Pages/Yourdublinyourvoice.aspx

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 7000+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

More to come! New companies that will be mentioned here soon are a Car Sharing Scheme and a Nutritionist. Watch this space.

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

WINTER GALLERY SHOW – PAUL KANE GALLERY
The Paul Kane Gallery invites to a Winter Gallery Show, a group exhibition of works by Gallery Artists. The exhibition runs from Fri 03 Dec until Fri 24 Dec. Included artists are Marc Reilly, Megan Eustace, Chris Doris, Deirdre O’Brien, Tom Hammick,
Fiona Flinn, Michelle Rogers, Wesley Triggs, Philippa Sutherland, Aidan Crotty,
Roisin McGuigan, Brian Garvey, Ita Freeney, Margaret O’Sullivan, Zita Reihill,
Mary Clancy, Veronica Bolay RHA, Kathlyn O’Brien, Almha Roche, Mary A.Fitzgerald and Hazel Walker. (Gallery Details: The Paul Kane Gallery, 6 Merrion Square North, www.thepaulkanegallery.com, Open: Tues-Fri 11:00-18:00 and Sat 12:00-17:00)

Jelly (workatjelly.com) is a casual working event. It’s taken place in over a hundred cities where people have come together (in a person’s home, a coffee shop, or an office) to work for the day. There will be chairs and sofas, wireless internet, and interesting people to talk to, collaborate with, and bounce ideas off of. You bring a laptop (or whatever you need to get your work done) and a friendly disposition. If you want to join this month’s Jelly, either because you want to share ideas with people or just because you feel lonely in our own work place, check out amworks.ie/?p=760 It is completely free to attend, but you have to sign up on the website.

IRISH BOOK LAUNCH
I have to admit that I am always extremely hesitant including messages that I don’t understand, but I gather that this book launch on Fri 03 Dec is for one or two books in Irish, so the event is only interesting to the few Irish speakers among you:
“De hAoine-Friday Book Launch – Coisceim at Club Chonradh na Gaeilge, 6 Sr. Fhearchair, BAC2. Beidh Riona Nic Chongail mar aoi speisialta le linn seoladh dha leabhair le , iar-phriomhaistritheoir Dhail Eireann, Sean O Se – Cuimhni Cinn, Cuimhni Pinn agus Buile Shuibhne. Doirse 19:00” www.cnag.ie/

DOCKLANDS CHRISTMAS MARKET
Established and still brand new! This year’s Docklands Christmas Market in the IFSC, next to the chq Building will take place in the 4th or 5th year, but this year ALL will be different. This year the market will be an authentic German Christmas Market and if I understand it right, many of the 100 traders will be “imported” from Germany. Being totally biased, I expect (and hope) that we will see this year a PROPER Christmas Market in Dublin. :-) The market will run from 03-22 December and Opening hours are Mon-Thurs 12:00-20:30, Fri 12:00-21:30, Sat 11:00-22:00, Sun 11:00-20:00. www.ddda.ie/index.jsp?p=94&n=105&a=1794

Workshop leader Coilín “The Oh-Aissieux” is the founder-director of the Narrative Arts Club, which has been bringing innovative storytelling to audiences in Dublin city centre since September 2005. A lot more details are here: www.narrativeartsclub.com/page2.htm To request a place on this workshop, contact narrativearts@gmail.com or send a text msg with your contact details to 086 060 3818. www.narrativeartsclub.com/

CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL CHRISTMAS MARKET
On Sat 04, 11 + 18 Dec from 10:00-17:00 there will be a Christmas Market in the crypt of Christ Church Cathedral and since Christ Church Cathedral is rarely letting anybody in for free, the fact that Admission is free is a big surprise. www.cccdub.ie

CHOCOLATE CHRISTMAS – TEMPLE BAR
A number of events of this weekend’s Temple Bar Chocolate Christmas Festival were meant to take place today. Due to the weather all Truffle Making Workshops have been cancelled and the Outdoor Movie Screening (It’s a Wonderful Life) has been re-scheduled for Sat 18 Dec at 20:00. If you have tickets for the movie screening, they will be now valid for the 18 Dec. All other events will take place as planned. FARMLEIGH HOUSE – CHRISTMAS EVENT CANCELLED
The Christmas Events in Farmleigh House that were planned for Sat 04 and Sun 05 Dec are cancelled due to the weather. It is expected that the events next weekend will go ahead. www.farmleigh.ie/Events/Christmas2010/

MUSICAL CHRISTMAS – MUSIC MAKER EVENT
On Sat 04 and Sun 05, Music Maker, the instrument and music shop in 29 Exchequer Street will run some helpful educational or informational sessions to help potential Christmas Present shoppers who don’t know there way around instruments with their decisions. And the whole event is at the same time a fundraiser for the Dublin Simon Community. So if you’re buying for a musician and have no idea where to start, go to the free introductory demos to Drums, Guitars (electric), DJ gear and Synths, Keyboards and Acoustic guitars run by teachers of the Music Maker music school.
In addition there will be performances of the live bands Túcan and Gypsies on the Autobahn on Sat 04 Dec. On Sunday the introductions are repeated and there will be Christmas Carols sung in the shop.
Another Music Maker event (for the geeks) is the launch and demonstration of the Arranger Workstation “Yamaha Tyros 4” on 08 Dec at 19:30. The launch is free but you need to pre-book via emma@musicmaker.ie. www.musicmaker.ie

BELVEDERE COLLEGE CHRISTMAS MARKET
The yearly Belvedere College Christmas Market is taking place on Sat 04 + Sun 05 Dec from 12:00-20:00. While two Nutcracker performances on Sat and a Christmas Carol Service on Sun are not free, it seems that the Christmas Market is free to visit. It will take place in the grounds of the College in Great Denmark Street, between Parnell Square and Gardiner Street and there will be Christmas Novelities, Crafts, Mulled Wine, Food, Presents and a lot more. www.belvederecollege.ie/christmas%20fair.html

CHRISTMAS CRACKER – SMITHFIELD
The organisers who are behind the Dublin Flea Market have organised a Christmas Market for this weekend in the Smithfield Area. The market will be on from 04-05 Dec from 12:00-19:00. The exact location? Well, it ain’t easy: It’s above the Chinamarket, beside Flo’s garage, just close to the Smithfield Luas stop. Theres also a Dublin Bikes depot accross from the building. I have no clue where that is, but a map on dublinflea.blogspot.com/ suggests that the street is called “Haymarket”.

It is a catholic holy day (Feast of Immaculate Conception) and traditionally people from the Irish Country side came and still come to Dublin to do their Christmas shopping. So the day is called “Culchie Day” by some. In modern times the day doesn’t have the same prominence anymore than it had, but you will still (weather permitting) see more people in the City Centre. This might have something to do as well that Primary Schools still close on that day (despite the fact that the Catholic Church has moved most Holy Days to the weekend after the day). ;-)

DUBLIN AIRPORT WASTING YOUR MONEY?!
Advertisement, I learned is to attract customers or to keep customers. But that assumes that your customers have the choice to go elsewhere and you want to stop them. If your customers have absolutely no choice then advertisement is a total waste of money. Last time I checked, the airline I sued told me where to show up. I couldn’t decide at what gate I will enter the plane. Maybe the Dublin Airport Authority still has to learn that, but the same applies to the use of Terminals. Passengers can NOT choose! So, why oh why did the DAA then waste EUR 500,000 on this TV advertisement www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdjLBXlieI0 that was only shown on RTE and TV3, NOT anywhere outside of Ireland. The most annoying thing about this is that You and Me are paying for this totally superfluous ad through the charges that we pay to the airlines we use. The huge amount of EUR 500,000 was paid to an advertisement agency after a tender process.

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
