Hi all!

Stradbally in County Laois is the place where MANY of you will be this weekend. Have fun! Apart from Christmas, this is the Event Guide where after sending it I get a massive amount of “Out of Office” bounces back. If you have never heard of Stradbally, then let me explain: This weekend the Electric Picnic will take place, a outdoor festival, that – in the past – has attracted up to 35,000 visitors. I heard rumours that it is not sold out this year, but on Gumtree and other websites there are lots of people still looking for tickets, so I am not sure if the rumours are right. The Electric Picnic is one of two major weekend-long outdoor music festivals in Ireland. The other one is Oxegen, and while Oxegen is for a slightly younger age group, the Electric Picnic is seen as the event for the “still-young grown-ups”.
In addition to all the music there is theatre, comedy, cabaret and you can even get your face painted (ask for Marvellous Faces!) or can get a massage (ask for Alicia!), by close friends and supporters of this Event Guide. :-) Cheap, it ain’t, though! The weekend ticket (includes camping) is EUR 240! Oh, and if you were looking forward to theatre at the Electric Picnic, check out the “This is odd!!” section at the end of this newsletter, because it seems something went seriously wrong in Stradbally!

Event Organisers often avoid the Electric Picnic or Oxegen weekend when scheduling their events, but we are not left completely alone this year, so if – like myself – you won’t be at the Electric Picnic, you will still be able to have a great weekend in Dublin.

Last week I wrote that “for the last 2 weeks the new subscriber numbers did drop a little” and a few of you were wondering if the Dublin Event Guide Community was shrinking, but don’t worry, this is not happening at all! Every week there are typically between 30 and 70 new subscribers, but in recent weeks we were close to the lower figure, so only the increase was slowing down. While there is no reason to worry, it is not time yet to reduce your efforts to promote the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. The 2010 target of 7500 subscribers we will reach without a doubt, but the 2011 target is 10,000 subscribers and with your help, we should reach that, BUT there is a lot to be done. If you wonder, why I am trying to grow our community to 10,000, then just think about how many competitions for free tickets I will be able to get from organisers. ;-) This is only ONE aspect, but like all the aspects, it will benefit everybody!

This week I will go back to basics. :-) There are not too many outstanding events, so I will go to the Point Village Market and to the Temple Bar Food Market. If I get a chance I will go to the Natural Museum on Sunday because I haven’t made it to it since it was re-opened and if the weather stays ok, maybe a bit of nature would be a good idea as well. ;-) During the week, I will try to go to the Green Drinks event on Tuesday. And I would love to watch some films of the Chilean Film Festival, but will probably not find the time for it. Either way, I know that I will have a good week! :-)

GUNS N’ ROSES SCANDAL IN O2
Many of you might have heard about the scandalous events in the O2 on Wednesday night. Guns n’ Roses were meant to perform in the O2. A supporting band played from 20:00-21:00, I heard and then there was NOTHING for 1.5 hours because the main band, Guns n’ Roses, were late. When they finally started at 22:30, the audience was seriously upset and plastic cups with drink in them were thrown at the band. Axl Rose warned that they would leave the stage if more stuff was thrown and after just 22 minutes they did walk off. It is unquestionable that throwing cups with or without beer at a performer is not acceptable, but I guess the band could have calmed the masses by explaining their 1.5 hours delay and the outcome would have been completely different. Apparently the concert promoter stopped the band from leaving the venue and after 30 minutes of negotiation (and after many people from the audience had left already) they came back on stage and completed their whole concert. NEW RULES FOR LEARNER DRIVERS

SUMMER OF HERITAGE – DUN LAOGHAIRE
This is the last weekend of the “Summer of Heritage” in Dun Laoghaire, so if you want to take part in one of the tours, you better move fast! The schedule of the “Summer of Heritage” included tours and living history performances at the two stately homes, Cabinteely House and Marlay House. In addition tours of the Celtic Oratory on Library Road, the Obelisk on Killiney Hill, the Dun Laoghaire Memorials Tour, which is a coastal visit to the numerous memorials around the town, including the Queen Victoria Fountain and the Crimean War Cannon and a sightseeing tour along The Metals, a historic pathway that linked the quarry in Dalkey to the harbour in Dun Laoghaire, were part of the programme. Sea Bird Viewing, Nature Walks and Bat Walks complement the 2010 schedule. WANTED: SUPPORT FOR FUNDRAISING EFFORT FOR DONKEY SANCTUARY
Cliodhna D, a good friend recently went with her small daughter to a donkey sanctuary in Sligo, where an inspirational and totally dedicated woman has saved more than 60 donkeys from death and looks after them. Little Cadhla, Cliodhna’s daughter, so fell in love with the donkeys that she asked her mother to help the sanctuary in their efforts to increase the size of the sanctuary and to raise funds for buying more land. Cliodhna now has decided that she will work hard on helping to raise money and is looking for supporters who would help her to organise and run a number of fundraising events for the donkey sanctuary (www.donkey.ie). GERMAN REUNIFICATION – EXHIBITION
The German Embassy presents an exhibition called ‘From peaceful revolution to German unity’ from 01 – 17 September 2010 at the Dublin City Council offices. The exhibition shows the way to German unity, including the protest against the fraud of the council elections in the GDR, the former East Germany. SCULPTURE IN CONTEXT – NATIONAL BOTANIC GARDEN
From 01 Sept – 15 Oct over 120 sculptures by Irelands leading artists will be displayed throughout the Gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range of the Botanic Gardens with the smaller works exhibited in the gallery above the Visitors Centre. The magnificent grounds of the National Botanic Gardens have been home to this unique exhibition for the past eight years. Sculpture in Context was established in 1985 by a group of sculptors. Their aim was to work on behalf of fellow sculptors to provide space for exhibiting work of sculptors in venues outside of their normal gallery context. Participating Artists this year include Maureen Bushe, Darragh Casey, Roisin de Buitlear, Seamus Dunbar, Mel French, Etain Hickey, Leo Higgins, Petr Holecek, Alison Kay, Catherine Keenan, Fidelma Massey, Liz Nilsson, Isabelle Peyrat, Mark Ryan, Deirdre Rogers and Alex Scott. IRISH POLISH SOCIETY ANNUAL ART EXHIBITION 2010
Polish & Irish artists exhibit together at the Irish Polish Society Annual Art Exhibition from 07-25 Sept in Polish House, 20 Fitzwilliam Place, Dublin.
Established Polish artists who choose to live and work in Ireland, often taking their inspiration from Ireland, exhibiting alongside their Irish contemporaries, Irish artists who have a connection with Poland. The exhibition incorporates an eclectic mix of works on a wide variety of themes in ceramics, oils, acrylics, pastels and print. Artists exhibiting are Orla Kaminska, Roman Furgalski, Camilla Fanning, Ula Retzlaff, Marysia Harasimowicz, Marta Wakula- Mac, Maciej Smolenski, Andrzej Mazur, Helena Johnston, Robert Zuraw, and Martin Reynolds.

MARIE WOODS – PHOTO EXHIBITION

HIGH ENERGY PHOTO EXHIBITION – RED BULL ILLUME – TCD
Red Bull Illume is a unique, high energy photographic competition and focuses exclusively on the world of action, adventure and sports and from 01 Sept until 11 Sept this free exhibition in Trinity College will be open from 20:00-22:00 every day. All photos are illuminated and it sounds as if this exhibition is a must-see exhibition, which is the reason why I mention it again here. www.redbullillume.com

WALLPAPERED RUBBISH BINS – COLLEGE GREEN

POINT VILLAGE MARKET
Every weekend on Sat and Sun the Point Village Market is taking place from 09:00-17:00. It is an outdoor food market with a flea market-like add-on. The market is next to the Point Depot (O2), right beside the last Luas stop “The Point” on the Red Line. This new festival includes art exhibitions, music, dance and drama performances, workshops for adults in arts such as drawing, pinhole camera, dance and a whole range of activities for children.The events will take place in the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), the Hilton Hotel, the Patriots Inn and outside the Courthouse and on Hilton Plaza. Events begin at 10:00 and while most events are free, for the workshops a donation of EUR 5 is suggested. Director Peter Sheridan will be there for the main event on Saturday evening, but before that there will be plenty of dance workshops, a busking competition, Art Exhibitions and even a Wildflower Safari. COMMUNICATING ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES ON INTERNET
“Communicating environmental issues through the web – What can the internet deliver?” is the title of a one day conference on Sat 04 Sept from 10:00 in the European Union House, 18 Dawson Street, Dublin 2. TONY BLAIR – BOOK SIGNING
On Sat 04 Sept at 11:00 Tony Blair will be signing copies of his book “A Journey” in Eason’s in O’Connell Street. Due to Tony Blair’s role in the Iraq war, there won’t just be friendly people there and the security restrictions around this book signing will be mad. Shops in O’Connell Street were seemingly advised to close the doors until Blair is gone again. The Irish Anti War movement will demonstrate. Tony Blair is an ex-politician, who started well and lost it somewhere on the way. Writing a book is probably his way of justifying the things he did, but it would be surprising if it contained any amazing revelations. So the whole event is just a costly personal and private event by a book author and his publisher and many people ask if the police that is required should not really be paid by whoever causes the problem. The whole event is somewhat risky as well because it could turn ugly again with demonstrators, lots of police and just normal shoppers all thrown in the mix.

The programme features gigs, childrens activities, workshops, plays and films. There are walking tours, literary talks, yoga, art trails, choral choirs, dances, discos, a celebrity chef, Joycean celebrations and a Community Fun day.
The launch event will take place in Porterhouse North at 18:00 on Thursd 09 Sept with live music and beer sampling. BALLYMUN WHITEHALL EDUCATION FAIR
An action packed Education Fair is taking place in Ballymun Civic Centre on Thurs 09 Sept, from 09:00-16:30. After the official opening at 11:00, guest speakers from Ballymun will talk about what returning to education has meant for their lives. Following this, the newly appointed President of DCU, Brian Mac Craith, will speak. Subsequently, Stephen Crowe and Luke Hislop from Ballymun will speak about returning to Education. Ballymun Whitehall Education Fair is organised by Ballymun Whitehall Area Partnership and aims to promote learning, education and training opportunities for both adults and young people of all ages right in the heart of their own community. CANONBALL RUN – MERRION SQUARE
The Cannonball Run was a movie in 1981 with Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, Dom DeLuise and Farrah Fawcett. It was about a cross-country outlaw road race from New York to California with high performance cars. The Irish Cannonball Run is quite different, but has some similar foundations. Instead of Burt Reynolds and Roger Moore etc it is only Shane Lynch from Boyzone, former Miss World Rosanna Davison and boyfriend Wes Quirke, No Frontiers Presenter Kathryn Thomas, TV3’s Sinead Desmond from Ireland AM and Elaine Crowley, Models Georgia Salpa, Emma Quinlan and Hazel O Sullivan, and Lord Mayor of Dublin Gerry Breen who are taking part. And instead of a race against police and time from New York to California, the Irish version will be a 3-day convoy that visits places like Westport, Donegal, Clarinbridge, Killarney, Cork City and Cashel. But the great thing is that it is a very successful fundraiser for Barretstown, a therapeutic recreation place for children with serious illnesses. The first Irish Cannonball run last year raised over EUR 100,000 for the children. And for cars enthusiasts this is a great opportunity to see cars such as Lamborghini, Ferrarri, Aston Marin, Porches, Maserati, Rolls Royce and Bentley. Some of the unique cars already registered for the cannonball are SL Mc Laren, Ford GT 40, KTM XPO, American NYP Police Car, some new and classic mustangs, not forgetting the notorious General Lee’s car from the movie “Dukes of Hazard” the dodge charger.
The first leg starts at Merrion Square in Dublin at 09:30 on Fri 10 Sept.. If you want to admire the 160 cars (or maybe even the drivers) make sure that you are there early).

ELECTRIC PICNIC – THEATRE ROLLER-COASTER
At the Electric Picnic, in Stradbally, there is a Theatre Tent in the Mindfield and many theatre companies practised for weeks to prepare performances for the festival weekend of this “Music & Arts Festival”. The actors don’t get any pay, but in return for their free contribution they were meant to get free 3-day tickets to the festival. Sounds like a fair deal! However on Wednesday morning, the majority of the theatre troupes were told that their show had been cancelled. 22 shows had been cancelled and only 6 remained! After rehearsing for weeks and looking forward to the event, all participants were told that they would not be needed – and would certainly not get their free tickets. You can imagine the amazement and disbelief among the actors and it was expressed in this forum
forum.electricpicnic.ie/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15398 Over the day, the opinion was formed that the reason for the cancelation was due to the large number of complementary tickets that would have to be given to the actors. It is possible that maybe some theatre groups overstretched the free ticket offer a bit and possible nominated more people than they should have and then I would understand that the organisers of the festival are not happy. But it would probably have made sense to deal with that issue in a different way than just by cancelling the majority of theatre shows.
Well, the story continues: The theatre groups didn’t take this blow lying down, but instead they fought back and yesterday (Thursday) evening, the news emerged that the shows were back on and that free tickets were provided. It seems that the performers will now only get day-tickets and I would understand if they were disappointed, but at least they get ONE day at the festival. Very Odd that the Electric Picnic organisers didn’t start with this compromise, but instead initially just cancelled everything.
