Hi all!

Last weekend I went to the new Sogo Festival and I have to tell you about my interesting experience. :-) It was on Sunday afternoon and I went into George’s Street and then to Exchequer Street and it wasn’t what I had expected. I had expected a FESTIVAL, which to me means something happening in the streets, not just events in pubs and restaurants. There was not much going on in the streets. Initially, I have to admit, I was a bit disappointed and I know that a number of you felt the same – I got your messages. Now, I know as well that the organisers had planned some more outside events, but in the end they were not able – for a number of reasons – to go ahead. AND I know that the first year of a Festival is a tough time for the organisers ESPECIALLY because there is usually no money available for grandiose ideas. So, watch out for the Sogo Festival 2011! :-) But let me continue my story: I met Camille D there who was involved with the organisation and she suggested to me to go to an event in Ukiyo Bar, the Japanese bar/restaurant in Exchequer Street. The event was the one-man theatre show by Shadaan Felfeli “The Vir gin and the Vulture”. And it was absolutely amazing! Shadaan played for 1.5 hours the role of a Farsi storyteller and he was brilliant, telling the most beautiful and mesmerizing stories in the richest language possible. If you get a chance to see him perform this play, you MUST go! Unfortunately Shadaan doesn’t have a website (yet?), but his sister is telling a brief and interesting story about him on her website glenngouldproject.blogspot.com/2010/03/i-have-one-brother.html

Every now and then some inspired people from the Irish media ;-) find out about the Event Guide or agree with you and me about the fact that the whole world should now and report about it. The Irish Times, the Sunday Times and the Irish Independent have mentioned or written about the Event Guide in the past and Phantom FM and RTE have interviewed me a good few months ago. This week (or maybe next week) you might find an article about the Event Guide, about all of you (the Dublin Event Guide Community) and about me writing this weekly newsletter in the Weekend Magazine of the Irish Times. Look out for it! I don’t know yet what Jonathan deBurca Butler wrote, but I hope it is positive and his (and all your) support is much appreciated! Tell everybody:

The “Feel Good Slot” at this point in the Event Guide usually intends to give an uplifting message and I often find/pick a video clip on You Tube that is suitable. These video clips are sometimes a little unpersonal, but the message is nevertheless goo. This time I have something better! Miren M, a great supporter of this Event Guide, sent me a link to a video about Aline Barros. Aline is from Brazil and lives in Ireland. In July 2008 Aline was cycling near Christ Church on her way to work, when a truck caught her and nearly killed her. Aline’s spine got broken twice, she was hugely lucky to survive, but she is in a wheelchair now. …the truck driver didn’t stop! The doctors tell her that she will never walk again, but Aline is very positive and is convinced otherwise. This video tells Aline’s story full of hope and belief: www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-7velObi5Y I met her last year and she is such a wonderful and inspiring person!
If you can help her with some money or with any other support and you can reach her on linibarros_3 AT hotmail.com Aline says: “The video tells a little of my story, what I have experienced and how I’m living after the accident. I hope you enjoy this and that I can bring some hope to the heart of those who need a boost. I leave you my e-mail address for anyone who wants to talk to me. I appreciate the love, attention and all of prayers.”

This week there was nobody who wanted to incentivise my weekly writing marathon by sending me a donation for the Dublin Event Guide. Not even a peanut or an M&M! ;-) But I am looking forward to next week, just go to www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm It doesn’t even hurt!

This newsletter is a non-paid spare-time activity of mine, not a commercial project and if you like it you are invited to help with a donation. You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent. ;-)

You can donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm if you want to transfer money to my bank, just drop me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

WEALTH FROM MARKETING – 1-DAY EVENT IN DUBLIN
Internet Marketing, Social Media and Sound Branding are the topics the 3 speakers at the 1-day Wealth from Marketing Event will cover. James Schramko, Andrew McCauley and Julian Treasure will tell you how to grow your online and offline Marketing Profits. Register for free tickets here:

A distinctly quieter week after all the events last week. I won’t mind, because I will be in Ennis this weekend for the Gospel Rising Festival (www.gospelrising.com). But it does make my job a little difficult to pick some events I would go to. Should I just say: Hold out until next week when the Africa Day will take place? Well, I can’t do that to you. :-P So I will try to chose at least some events.
If I were in Dublin I would go tonight to the talk about viruses in the Science Gallery. On Saturday I would maybe go to the Bumper2Bumper Disco on Saturday and would DEFINITELY be at the Mint Bar later on Saturday to hear the Ratzingers. On Sunday I would go to the Car Boot Sale and then to the Europe Day Celebration in the European Union House. For the rest of the week I can’t give any recommendations because the events are not really what I would chose for myself, so I will let you decide on your own. :-)

______Competition______________

CASTLEPALOOZA MUSIC AND ARTS FESTIVAL – COMPETITION
Castle Palooza, the “small festival with the big heart and the stunning setting” in Charleville Castle, Tullamore will take place on 31 July and 01 August this year and I got truck loads full of entries for the Dublin Event Guide Competition for a pair of tickets to the festival. And the winner iiiiisssssss Clodagh Flanagan! Congratulations! Two-day tickets including camping are EUR 99 plus service charge. (There are some premium tickets available as well if you prefer a more sophisticated camping experience. Check the website for details.) And you can find all details, including the line-up and a facility to buy tickets on www.castlepalooza.com.

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

If you work in a company or have your own company where running a competition in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) would help to reach the 6000 readers of the Event Guide, just drop me a mail and we can discuss the details: dublineventguide@gmail.com If you organise a non-free event and want to have it listed in this Event Guide then through a competition you have the opportunity to do that.

______Dublin News______________

UNDERGROUND DART DELAYED
An underground DART was planned to be completed by 2015 and it now has been announced that it will be completed three years later. I have to admit that I think that even 2018 is HUGELY optimistic, but let’s see! The route is described here www.rte.ie/news/2009/1123/dart.html and the news about the delay is here
www.rte.ie/news/2010/0505/dart.html If any of you have experienced the pain and delays the Luas builds brought with them, you might agree that tunnelling across the whole city from the Docklands to Inchicore COULD take a little longer than the anticipated 6 years. And since money is in short supply at the moment, who knows when the construction work will start! On the other hand, it is better to plan now (even if some delays happen) than to do nothing and to realise in a few years time that the train is gone (excuse the pun!).

CHORUS AND NTL GONE
Yes, you heard right! Both cable TV providers are gone! But don’t worry, it doesn’t mean that you will have to take out the mini aerial again, instead Chorus and NTL who both were bought by UPC are now rebranding and will soon be called UPC only. Until now there was quite a bit of a mess because UPC and Chorus and NTL were all used, and people got a bit confused. So your new cable TV provider, which is the same as the old one, is UPC.
www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2010/0504/breaking43.html

OUTDOOR AND INDOOR MARKETS
A quite good list of indoor and outdoor markets can be found here: www.marketguide.ie/ Just click on County Dublin on the map to find out what markets are taking place now or in the near future.

DUBLINIA RE-OPENS
Dublinia, the Viking and Medieval Heritage Centre opposite Christ Church in Dublin has re-opened after extensive renovations. The website www.dublinia.ie didn’t get a facelift, but unfortunately the admission charges did go up (Adults: EUR 6.95).

STORY TELLING – FOOD CO-OP
Sara L. tells me about a monthly Storytelling Performance in the Dublin Food Co-op (New Market, off Cork Street, Dublin 8). It happens on the first Thursday of every month from 19:30-20:00 and you can contact the organisers through storytellersatthecoop@gmail.com. The event is for all ages and is free (donations welcome). www.dublinfood.coop/html/news_events.html#thursdays

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 6000+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

More to come!

BEALTAINE FESTIVAL
The Bealtaine Festival is a festival all over Ireland “celebrating creativity in the older age”. It will run from 01-31 May and there are hundreds of events taking place across the country. Libraries are a bit part of the event organisation for Bealtaine and if you are a little older, you should definitely check it out. I think it is a great idea to do something like that for older people. However, there is absolutely no reason why “older people” shouldn’t full participate in all the other festivals in and around Dublin. So having a separate festival is good, but otherwise, let’s make sure that all ages feel welcome at the other festivals as well.
If you are interested in the Bealtaine festival, check out www.bealtaine.com and the library’s programmes:

FIGHT AGAINST CANCER – PUBLIC LECTURE – RDS
On Thurs 20 May, Professor Jim Johnston, Deputy Director of the Centre for Infection and Immunity at Queen’s University Belfast, will discuss his cutting edge research which is helping to identify the causes of cancer and is making great strides in terms of improving methods of diagnosis and treatment. Currently most cancer treatments are akin to hitting a nut with a sledgehammer and are associated with very toxic side-effects. However, Professor Johnston’s research involves understanding the underlying mechanisms behind novel factors produced by cancer cells, how these assist the cancer growth and the growth of blood vessels that feed the cancer. This work opens new avenues of research that should unlock exciting new therapies that significantly benefit cancer patients.
The lecture will take place at 19:00 in the RDS Concert Hall on Thursday, May 20 and is part of an annual RDS Irish Times lecture programme organised in association with the Irish Society for Immunology. Admission is free but advance booking is essential. To reserve a place email karen.sheeran@rds.ie or call 01-2407289.

PUBLIC MOURNING – IS IT TOO MUCH?
Many pages in articles, scientific papers and even books have been written about Grief and Mourning in different cultures. We know that the mourning (the public expression of grief) in the middle Eastern word is a lot more public – you have seen wailing women on TV – than it was in the European environment. But something seems to have shifted in the last few years. I don’t know if it all started with Lady Diana or if it was there already before, but surprisingly our mourning became so much more public. I do not want to judge or criticise, but it is a somewhat odd new direction. Probably everybody has heard about the death of Gerry Ryan. Ryan was a much loved radio presenter and journalist and he died of what was probably a heart attack at an age of only 53 years. Between 200,000 and 300,000 people listened to him every work day for up to three hours on 2FM, so he was definitely well known and people might have even considered him as part of their life. The shock was huge when he died, mainly because it happened so suddenly and unexpectedly. While death is the most natural thing in our lives, which will meet us all at some stage, we really don’t deal well with it. And the expression of sorrow and grief is seriously challenging to most of us. I remember a time when mourning was a private thing! Making it a bit more public – as it happens in recent years – is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is astounding how radical the shift in the last few years to a VERY public mourning has taken place. It the shift continues, we will soon have wailing women in our streets! For Gerry Ryan, thousands of people have signed books of condolences (www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2010/0506/1224269791879.html), more than 70,000 people joined a facebook group and are leaving their messages there (www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=122193504464309); thousands of text messages were received by RTE, Ryan’s employer. And many wonder: WHY? All the messages won’t make a difference to Gerry Ryan, and his family will realistically not even look at more than 0.1% or less of the messages. So who is this public mourning for if it is not for the deceased or his family? Does it change how someone feels if his/her signature is in a book? Or if a message “Gerry, we miss you!” is left on a website? Who do people do that for? For themselves? Or for others, i.e. to be seen? This radical shift from private to public mourning is puzzling and have to admit that it seems odd to me.
I don’t know about you, but I hope that once my life has come to an end there will be a celebration! Hopefully not about the fact that I am gone ;-) , but a celebration of the fact that I have been here. And I hope there will be lots of music and only joyful music will be allowed. :-)

Enjoy your weekend and hopefully you will have a good one while I enjoy the Gospel Rising Festival in Ennis. (The festival is a Gospel Music Festival, but I was just recently looking for Barber Shop Quartets in Ireland. BABS, the British Association of Barbershop Singers, doesn’t list any events in Ireland and I couldn’t find a similar organisation in Ireland. If you know of any good Barbershop Quartets, let me know, a friend of mine is looking for one.)
