Hi all!

This weekend I will be away in London at a seminar with 10,000 (!!) people. I know that it will be a super event from Thursday until Sunday, but it will run until 23:00 every evening. :-O So it will be INTENSE.

[ad]

The great news for you is that because of this seminar, I started already on Monday creating the newest Dublin Event Guide and therefore you will get it surprisingly early this week! I hope you think “Hurray!” and make great use of it. It’s another bank holiday weekend, so have a great weekend!

The Big 500 Share is still running and last week 2 nice people supported my work with a donation last week. Thanks a lot! The target was to raise at least EUR 3000 through this campaign, but with 1450 we are still far far away from the target, BUT we got a little more than EUR 400 for the two charities. That is respectable! The problem now is that the remaining amount of just over 1000 will be used up by the end of May. :-O And then???? If you can help, please do! Check the details in the Dublin News section and don’t forget that you will get a free “Secret Dublin” Guide Book if you help!!! ;-)

+++++++++

The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 69,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.

+++++++++++

And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime.
This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

This week I selected a quote by Ted Coine (Speaker, Author & Founder of Social Leader organisation “Switch and Shift”). He said:

Connect enthusiastically. Give relentlessly. And lead bravely. Do that, and the future is yours! – Ted Coine

Connect, lead and give! Don’t forget that….and teach it to your kids, nephews and nieces!

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend the Bray Jazz Festival will take place and another Dublin Flea Market (on Sunday) and the Alternative Market at the Vodoo Lounge. The Latvia Day also takes place in Temple Bar. On Monday the Bealtaine Festival starts for the older people and on Wednesday another Free Wednesday with free admission to Dublin Castle etc will happen. LOTS to do!

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first

www.dublineventguide.com/shop

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Dublin Event Guide Smartphone App “Dublin For Free”

*****************************************************************************

The Big 500 Share!!

With the 500th edition of the Dublin Event Guide a few weeks ago, we launched “The Big 500 Share”. It is a fundraising campaign for the Dublin Event Guide (70%) and for two charities (30%) and everyone who donates will also get a gift (My new “Secret Dublin” Guide Book which will be completed very soon and will contain information about TEN near-secret destinations in Dublin.)

You can now donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide but keep reading for more details if you have time.

The amount needed for the Dublin Event Guide in 2014 is EUR 3400 (EUR 2400 to send the weekly e-mail magazine and at least EUR 1000 to fix parts of the smartphone app and to improve the website.) So the closer we come to this, the better, but until today, we managed to raise EUR 1200. 400 Euro of that will go to the charities and the rest will just cover the Dublin Event Guide cost for 4 months. So your help is STILL needed!!!

You can donate now via this link: www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide and if PayPal doesn’t work for you send me a mail (dublineventguide@gmail.com with subject “The Big 500 Share”) and I will suggest alternatives. Thanks for your support!!!!

The two charities that you have chosen in a public vote are the Alzheimer’s Association and the Homeless charity “Peter McVerry Trust”.

PhotoIreland Festival 2017

The PhotoIreland Festival is back again with exhibitions, workshops, photobook launches and talks. This year, the festival explores how Photography is used to share accounts of personal experiences related to conflict: The Recount of Conflict. Many events are free, but the website doesn’t make it easy to identify what is free and what isn’t. For that reason I wasn’t able to include a comprehensive list of events and instead have to ask you to check the website yourself.

On the Programme Page here, you will find lots of nice pictures that represent individual events, but you will have to check them all to find out what is free and when it is happening.

By buying through the ads in this Dublin Event Guide, you help the Dublin Event Guide! Every click counts! Thanks!

Must Have Book for girls!! “Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls”

This news item is not related to Dublin, but it is so relevant, that I decided to post it here.

I came across a really interesting video clip on Facebook last week. It is about what stories we read our kids and Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo are talking commenting that none of the stories we read to kids have women in leading roles and in none of them women are in charge of their lives. So to change the role models of the girls in your life, you should consider their book “Good Night Stores for Rebel Girls”. It is a book with the real-life stories of 100 outstanding women and it really looks impressive.

Have a look at the video clip here and if you want to buy the book (no delivery charges!) for the best price, go here.

The story of Katherine Switzer, the first woman who ran the Boston Marathon, is not in that great book, but watch this short video about her story here. I admire the women that fight for equal rights!

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to give recommendations, tips & tricks on how to organise and run good events. Eventbrite is the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and their support is very much appreciated!

If you are regularly or occasionally organising events, keep an eye on the Eventbrite blog. It covers a wide variety of event-related and event-relevant topics that can help you hugely! Read more here.

And if you are looking for free or non-free events, you can find them at www.eventbrite.ie

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

The exhibition “Humans Need Not Apply” (10 Feb – 14 May) in the Science Gallery is looking at the influence robots will have on our society, on our lives and on jobs. How will robots replace humans? How can robots be creative? And is automation maybe going too far?

About 27 exhibits will ask and answer these questions. When you come into the exhibition space in the Science Gallery the little desk lamp robot Pinokio will greet you with all its friendliness and curiosity (that’s MY interpretation of Pinokio’s behaviour). And the three Doppelgänger robots upstairs will move, even dance with you. But more robots and automation will also have possibly some negative effects and “The Great Disengagement” looks at how we human beings might rebel against robots when they have taken our jobs and more away.

The exhibition has many many facets and it is extremely interesting. There are fascinating and intriguing exhibits and maybe more unexpected ones like the “tickle robot”. I strongly recommend the exhibition and can definitely say that it is suitable for ALL ages, even younger kids can get something out of it.

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Admission is free.

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours

10:00 – 16:30, Sun 30 Apr

Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

Poets such as Seigfried Sassoon, Wilfred Owen & Rupert Brooke left us vivid accounts of the horror of war and that hope that endured. Featuring ‘Flower of Iowa’ by Lance Ringel, a panel of international speakers will reflect on the impact of this “lost generation,” and the few LGBT love stories that blossomed in the horrors of the trenches that have survived one hundred years on.

NOT the first day of Summer!!!

08:00, Mon 01 May

Dublin (various locations)

It is an extremely stubborn myth in Ireland that Summer starts on 01 May. Primary teachers were and are still (!!) teaching it, despite Met Eireann’s repeated attempts to correct this misinformation.

It is true that the Celts started their “summer” on 01 May, but they lived by a completely different calendar: For the Celts the Dark half of the year started on 01 November and the light half started on 01 May. So strictly speaking it wasn’t even their start of summer, it was just the start of the light half of the year. In addition their day started at sunset!

So, if you live like the Celts, your year starts on 01 November and your day starts at sunset, then for you, 01 May is a good day to start the summer. ;-)

If, however, you have adjusted to a modern calendar – unlike your primary teacher! – then the start of summer is on 01 June as Met Eireann confirms to us. And if you use a thermometer to determine the seasons then you KNOW anyway that this weather outside just CAN’T be summer!

So have a great May Day and look forward to the start of summer in 31 days.

Bealtaine Festival “for older people”

09:00, Mon 01 May

Dublin (various locations)

Every May the Bealtaine Festival takes place all over Ireland and it “Celebrates arts and creativity as we age”. This is a difficult description as everybody ages, but the organisers “Age & Opportunity” actually want to address the “older age”. Ok, that helps a little, but not much and nobody still really knows what the target age is. In previous years, a guidance of 55+ was given but that has disappeared. In addition most 55-60 years olds wouldn’t appreciate it being classified as “older age”. ;-)

Where does that leave us? We don’t know but, I guess if you feel older, this festival is for you and if you don’t, then the festival is not for you. ;-)

There will be many events throughout May and a good few of them are free. The website doesn’t have the best search facility, but you can also download the brochure via this page (look for the Download link at the bottom). To find events go to the WHAT’S ON page on the website, but then you will have to click on “SEARCH FOR EVENT” otherwise, you will get a seemingly random list of events. (Very non-intuitive and totally unsuitable for elderly computer users!)

In “Dublin City” there are approx. 60 events, but as I said, not all are free. Oddly, the events that you find are not sorted by date, but seem to be in random order.

Over the coming 4 weeks, I will include a number of free Bealtaine events in the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events, but with such a tricky search facility, I won’t be able to include all events, so please check the Bealtaine website here: www.bealtaine.ie

The first podcast addresses the radical reconfiguration of contemporary shipping and seafaring in the last 50 years. Sheelagh will be on hand to answer questions before and afterwards.

The walk is about 4km long (40minutes) and starts at Sluice House on Great South Wall. Sluice House is a small single storey building on the walk to Poolbeg Lighthouse.

Over the coming 4 weeks, I will include a number of free Bealtaine events in the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events, but with such a tricky search facility, I won’t be able to include all events, so please check the Bealtaine website here: www.bealtaine.ie

Free Wednesday – Free Entrance to OPW Heritage Sites

09:00, Wed 03 May

Various heritage locations in Dublin

Entry charges at some OPW Heritage sites are waived once a month, on the “Free Wednesday”, the first Wednesday of the month. The Office of Public Works (OPW), who looks after the state owned heritage sites, wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therefore started this great initiative in 2011.

Most OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:
+ Dublin Castle, State Apartments
+ The Casino, Marino
+ Rathfarnham Castle
+ Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange
+ Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow

In the past Kilmainham Gaol (the most popular site) was also on that list, but it was removed some months ago and is sorely missed.

As you can imagine, this event is very popular and therefore it is strongly recommended to arrive early at the venues. Once the day’s tickets are given out, you will not get access anymore.

Dublin’s Culture Connects: Around the Table – Film Screening

13:15, Wed 03 May

National Library, Kildare Street, Dublin 2

The National Library is involved in “The National Neighbourhood: Around the Table” project. This project connects communities old and new across Dublin’s historic central area with artists of different disciplines to explore the food history of the area. Groups visited the library as part of the project. Themes of mothering, belonging, words and work were shared through mapping the story, role and journey of food in the city – from the docks to the markets, and from the streets to the table.

The short film “Around the Table” (24 min) was made as part of the project, and explores Dublin’s food history through the memories of Dublin’s dock workers, workers from Cadbury’s who explain why the ‘Flake’ produced in Dublin had the best taste to current developments in food choices.

Admission is free. The film will be screened on 03+10+17+24 May.

Franco Basaglia and Radical Psychiatry in Italy in the 1960s and 1970s – Talk

18:30 – 20:00, Wed 03 May

Italian Institute of Culture, 11 Fitzwilliam Square East, Dublin 2

It is not clear if this is a book launch or a talk, but it is about an interesting topic:

In 1961, when Franco Basaglia arrived at the Gorizia asylum, on the Italian border with Yugoslavia, it was a place of horror, a Bedlam for the mentally sick and excluded, redolent of Basaglia’s own wartime experience inside a fascist jail. Basaglia, the new director, was expected to practise all the skills of oppression in which he had been schooled, but he had other plans and used his influence to close the entire Italian asylum system.

John Foot, author of “The Man Who Closed the Asylums” (2015) gives a gripping account of one of the most influential movements in twentieth century psychiatry, which helped to transform the way we see mental illness. John Foot will be at this event.

Admission is free.

Bealtaine Festival “for older people”

09:00, Thu 04 May

Bealtaine Festival “for older people”

09:00, Fri 05 May

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours

10:00 – 16:30, Fri 05 May

Spanish Film Screening: Os dias afogados

18:00, Fri 05 May

Instituto Cervantes, Lincoln House, Lincoln Place (near National Gallery), Dublin 2

“Os Dias Afogados / The Drowned Days” is a film about the flooding of villages in Galicia.

In 1992, the construction of the Lindoso (Portugal) dam forever flooded the villages Aceredo and Buscalque (Galicia, Spain). Its inhabitants could do nothing to save their land and their homes. Knowing that everything was about to be lost, several neighbors took their home cameras and started to film. Their footage, filmed since the mid-60s, is valuable historical and ethnographic evidence, coloured by their subjectivity and their experiences.

The film will be screened in Galician with English subtitles.

Admission is free.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Are Estate Agents important celebrities?

The answer is a pretty simple and very clear NO! But it seems that there sense of their own importance is coming to a different conclusion. But let me go back a few steps:

I get regularly fliers, A5 cards, letters or brochures from estate agents in my letterbox. They either want to offer me some of their properties or – and that is even more often the case – want me to sell my apartment by using their services. They won’t get anywhere with me, because I am renting my apartment and therefore won’t have anything to sell, but let’s leave that little “oops” aside for now and assume we had something to sell.

What do you think would be important information that I would be interested as a potential seller? Maybe their success rate? Maybe an estimate how much money I would get? Maybe an estimate how long it would take to sell? Maybe the amount they want from me in fees? Maybe their experience? I guess it would be some or all of these!

The A5 card that I found in my letterbox last week had four pictures of houses on them. three were for sale and one was sold and for all the price was specified, so the message of the pictures was “We want to sell a property to you!” but then the two line service description suggested that they will give me a free valuation for my property and a free “unique” report about what’s selling in my neighbourhood. So clearly THAT message was “We want to sell your property!” Sounds like mixed messages to me!

But then you turn the card around and all you see is the mugshots (portrait photos) of 18 (!!) people and I have to guess that they are the company’s employees. Just mugshots and names! No information about their experience, area of responsibility, just a picture. … Is this probably the least important information I need about my estate agent? Do I really care how he or she looks? – I absolutely do NOT care! If I was a potential client, I would just want them to get me the max amount of money!

So why do they show the mug shots of 18 people on that card?

I can only conclude that Estate Agents think they are big celebrities where seeing their picture will make me nearly automatically buy their product!?

There are professions where the face/picture is a big part of the brand and is needed for their self-advertisement. A model, a singer, a sports person and even some politicians need to be recognised to do effective marketing. But an estate agent?????

This was the promotional card from just one estate agent, but this is no exception! All four or five last fliers etc that I got from the same profession in the last few weeks had pictures on them. Odd!!
