Hi all!

It happens regularly that I am too late getting the Dublin Event Guide finished to make it to any event on a Saturday! :-O But this week, I am determined to go the Maker Faire in Merrion Square. (I really like this event!) So if all goes well, I get the first version out online early enough and then add the remaining events as fast as possible so that still a bit of the day is left.

[ad]

I expect that this is ok with you, especially if it means that this edition will arrive a little earlier. I am writing this introduction before the rest is ready to send, that’s why I am not sure yet how it will work out.

The Dublin Event Guide is currently published in two stages. The first stage is an update on the website and the smartphone app. More events will be added after that and the smartphone app will be updated continually. When all events are entered the second stage is to send the e-mail to all subscribers.

This is the FINAL version of this week’s Dublin Event Guide.

Great news regarding the outstanding bills! The July Bill is paid *weight_of_shoulder* and the first EUR 25 for the August bill have been donated. So only EUR 165 required for August. Thanks so much! If you can help in any way, your help will be VERY much appreciated!!! Can YOU help here?

And here is my weekly appeal: Please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.

————————–

More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime.
This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

For the last few weeks, I am quoting Tony Robbins here in the feel good slot. That has a number of reasons: 1) A free seminar about his courses will be in Dublin next Saturday and I plan to be there myself. 2) I have been at his main event “Unleash the Power Within” and it is an amazing event. So good that I am considering going to the one in London in May next year again. It is not free at all, but – in my opinion – very much worth the money. 3) He really and truly has some good quotes, so you could fill this Feel Good SLot just with Tony Robbins quotes for months.

Today I have picked a YouTube clip, also with motivational speaker, self-help author and personal finance instructor Tony Robbins.

Watch this TED talk, it is really good: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwFOwyoH-3g

Tony Robbins runs a huge event once a year, called Unleash the Power Within (UPW) in London, that is attended by more than 6000 people every time. It is a four day event and it will – without a doubt – have a long lasting impact on every participant.

At the Unleash the Power Within Workshop in Dublin, you will learn
+ How to break through the fears that hold you back
+ How to create momentum in your life to make difficult things become effortless
+ How to install the habits that create maximum energy, optimum health and peak vitality
+ How to implement a fail-safe system to ensure you follow through your long-term goals
+ How to harness the key strategies of wealth creation, regardless of economic conditions

For the last time, one of Tony’s trainers will be in Dublin to tell you more about UPW and to teach you some great concepts to improve your life. This 3-hour UPW Preview is a workshop event and it will take place on Saturday 30 July and you can choose the time slot from 10:00-13:00 or from 15:00-18:00 in the Clarion Hotel near Liffey Valley Shopping Centre. Admission is free, but you have to register here to attend.

At the Pendulum event in Dublin in January thousands of people paid more than EUR 700 for a one day event to see Tony Robbins. Learn his key concepts at this workshop event for free!

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Ailish B, Leigh P, George K and Miriam L were so great to help the Dublin Event Guide with a donation! Thanks a lot! I really appreciate your help! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend, the main event for me is the Maker Fair on Saturday and you will find me near Christ Church on Sunday to see the water slide. Liberties Festival, Malahide Festival, Swords Festival and Bray Air Show are other events if you want to keep yourself busy! :-)

If you make it into the City Centre on Saturday, you will find the big water slide, the Curiosity Garden of the Festival of Curiosity at the Wood Quay Amphitheatre, a Christ Church Market and the Liberties Festival Fun Day all in a short walking distance along the axis of Christ Church to St. Patrick’s Cathedral. That’s where it is all happening! ;-)

SpeedFriending – Ticket Competition – Update

Sun 24 July – 18:00-20:00
Trinity Bar, Dame Street, Dublin 2

SpeedFriending is a new way to meet new people and to make long-lasting friendships and connections. It works like this: You get 5 minutes with each participant to see if you like them and if they are someone you would like to hang out with.
Make new friends, expand your social circle and have an entertaining evening at SpeedFriending.

Admission is EUR 10 and you can get your ticket at the door. Please RSVP on the website below.

There was a good bit of interest last time, so Dereck, the organiser of the meet-ups, has made some more tickets available for Dublin Event Guide readers. But unfortunately I messed up last week and didn’t tell you how to enter. Apologies! So this week is too short notice to fix this, but I will talk to Dereck and will hopefully be able to offer you a competition for his next event again.

And if you want me to use/test a product you are selling and then share my assessment here in the Dublin Event Guide, we can talk about that too. I like testing gear. ;-)

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | | Vodafone |
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

The Story of the Capital

Did you know that the basement of City Hall is the home of a permanent exhibition called “The Story of the Capital” and also of a temporary exhibition about the Dublin Fire Brigade in 1916? The Story of the Capital exhibition is really good and I would recommend it strongly.

There is normally an admission charge, but I found out a few days ago that in 2016 admission to that exhibition is completely free in connection with the Easter Rising commemorations.

This is really good news!

(It is a little surprising that it took until July and a total coincidence that I found out and there definitely has not been a Press Release or other media notification at the beginning of the year, but we have another 5 months to visit the exhibition now, so we will get over that unexpected lack of communication. ;-) )

Put “The Story of the Capital” on your To Do list!! The exhibition is open from Monday until Saturday from 10:00-17:15.

Speed Limit Consultation

The speed limits in Dublin City are being reviewed at the moment and a public consultation is running. Dublin City has the nonsensical plan to limit the speed in ALL areas of Dublin and on ALL streets to 30 km/h. In my opinion, it makes sense in areas of higher risk (near schools, playgrounds etc), but it doesn’t make sense as a general limit.

Check out the details here www.dublincity.ie/speedreview and if you have ANY opinion, make it known. Do not rely on other people, YOU have to voice your concerns or opinions if you want them to be counted.

Submissions can be made online until 17:00 on Wednesday 24 August 2016.

Summer of Heritage 2016 – Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown

The Summer of Heritage 2016 programme in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, is a series of free guided tours running for 10 weeks from 27 June – 04 September. There will be 29 events at locations like Dalkey Castle, Cabinteely House, National Maritime Museum, Monkstown Castle, Deansgrange Cemetery, Blackrock, Milltown, The Metals, Seapoint Martello Tower, Dun Laoghaire, Killiney Hill and there will also be a Maeve Binchy walking tour, a 1916 Graves tour of Deansgrange Cemetery, a 1916 Social History tour of Dún Laoghaire and a 1916 Exhibition in Marlay House.

No other part of Dublin runs such an interesting and extensive heritage programme with plenty of free guided tours, so have a look at the programme on the website here. You find a link on the same site where you can download the full booklet in PDF.

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to give recommendations, tips & tricks on how to organise and run good events. Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Voices of Memory – Walk & Talk at sound art installation

30 June – 30 Sept

National War Memorial Gardens, Islandbridge, Dublin 8

Voices of Memory is a riverside sound art installation by Christina Kubisch at the Irish National War Memorial Gardens to remember the more than 49,000 Irish people who died in the First World War. In 1923, these names were published in Irish Memorial Records 1914-1918. Consisting of eight volumes, these records, beautifully designed and illustrated by Irish artist Harry Clarke, are housed nearby in the Irish National War Memorial Gardens.

Almost the entire list of these names was read by volunteers of different ages and accents from across Ireland. The sound installation is based on the flow of these male and female voices playing over the bank of the river.

Admission is free. www.goethe.de/ins/ie/en/ver.cfm?fuseaction=events.detail&event_id=20767264

Seditious Types, Legacy of the Printers of 1916 – Exhibition

07 May – September (Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00, Sat+Sun 14:00-17:00, closed bank holiday weekends)

National Print Museum, Beggars Bush Barracks, Haddington Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4

The exhibition “Seditious Types – Legacy of the Printers of 1916” will explore the role of printers active in 1916 and the central role of printed media in shaping the image and meaning of the Easter Rising.

Politics and the print industry had a complex relationship in 1916 Ireland. As a commercial sector the print industry produced vast amounts of stationary and advertising for the main political parties and the British administration. This often resulted in material from varying political points of view being produced in the same printing shops. However, a number of print shops were associated with the Gaelic League and the nationalist literary movement. This group of printers actively published works which would not have been printed by the mainstream printers of the time, including works by Yeats, Synge and O’Casey. In recognition of the power of print to inform and win public opinion, a nationalist print counter-culture existed in the form of journals, pamphlets and books. This ‘mosquito press’ circulated mainly in Dublin among radical political activists. In the case of the more seditious groups and individuals, small printing presses were often established in secret locations. By 1916 many of the key political activists were printers, compositors and editors.

Flaneur by Dublin – Photo Art Installation

02-24 July – 17:00-21:00

Smithfield Plaza, Smithfield, Dublin 7

Flaneur By Dublin brings the works of two contemporary photographers to Smithfield Plaza. Their photos are displayed in a series of large cubes, dispersed over a metal pathway installed in Smithfield Square. These large cubes become lightboxes at dusk, creating a unique display and extending the enjoyment of this open-air gallery until 21:00.

The two selected artists for Fla?neur By Dublin are Esther Teichmann (Germany) and Rik Moran (UK). They were for a residency in Ireland earlier this year, engaging with the urban and rural landscape and producing the present body of work.

Flaneur By Dublin is part of a larger project called Flâneur – New Urban Narratives. This is a new, European Union funded, 2 year long project, transforming photographers into fla?neurs and requesting them to apply a new approach to their work within the urban territory. The project involves an international network of some 20 organisations from 11 different countries, and it will be presented in the 13 partner cities.

The launch will take place on Sat 02 July at 19:00.

The art installation will be on show from 02-24 July

Each library displaying the exhibition will host a workshop in basic printmaking. Participants will be invited to illustrate an incident/artefact of their choice. 10:00 – 18:00, Sat 23 Jul

Christ Church Cathedral, Christchurch Place, Dublin 8

There will be a market at Christ Church Cathedral on Saturday and Sunday organised by Christ Church Cathedral, but it seems they forgot to spread the word.

I only found out by coincidence because our friends from www.paperbear.ie will sell their great pop-up cards there and they luckily mentioned the market on their Facebook Page.

The 98FM Water slide is at Wine Tavern Street, next to Christ Church, so that is probably the reason for this impromptu market. I would expect a mix of food stalls and craft stalls there.

It runs on Saturday from 10:00-18:00 and on Sunday from 12:30-18:00. Admission is free.

Dublin Maker Fair 2016

10:00 – 18:00, Sat 23 Jul

Merrion Square, Dublin 2

The Dublin Maker Fair is a family friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness and a celebration of the maker movement. It’s a place where people show what they are making and share what they are learning, a big creative carnival.

Makers range from tech enthusiasts to hackers, crafters, coders, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, artists, science clubs, students, authors and commercial exhibitors. They are of all ages and backgrounds and from all over Ireland and beyond.

This year, there will be Bamboo Bikes, Paper Pets, LED 3D Avatars, Raspberry PI and Arduino projects and experts, Physic Buskers who will explain complicated things in an easy way, MIDI Music Instruments, Robots, Wood-Turning, 3D Printing, Homebrewing, Origami, Drones, App Development and sooo much more. A full list of all exhibitors is here.

The Makeshop, TOG, DLRLexIcon Makers, Makerdojo and lots of other groups and organisations will also tell you what they are doing and how you can be part of the maker community.

In previous years the event took place on the Phyiscs Square in Trinity College and it is great that it is growing further and has moved to Merrion Square.

If you like making, building, creating things or if you are just fascinated finding out how creative other people can be, come to this event, I will definitely be there! ;-) And a regular question: Is it suitable for kids? Definitely! There is something for everybody.

Admission is free.

The hugely popular Festival of Curiosity will be back from 21-24 July. It is a (family) festival that celebrates science, arts, design and technology and I already included for the last two weeks it in the “Upcoming Events” section of the Dublin Event Guide, because tickets for free events go like hot cakes!

The festival runs from Thursday until Sunday and a lot of free events that needed tickets are booked out, but there are still some tickets available and there are also drop-in events. Also: Many non-free events are very low priced (EUR 2 or EUR 4), so you should definitely check out the full programme to see if you find anything that appeals to you.

I will list in this Dublin Event Guide some of the free events that are not booked out yet (at the time of writing this!), but as I said, check the full programme!!! ;-)

The two main “walk-in” events on Saturday and Sunday are

Big Water Slide in Dublin City

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 23 Jul

Wine Tavern Street, Dublin 8

A 80m long water slide will be on Wine Tavern Street on Saturday and Sunday, just outside of Dublinia and next to Christ Church Cathedral.

The sponsors are 98FM and HB Ice Cream and 98FM gave all the tickets to their listeners, so if you go there you will not be able to use the slide unless you already won a wristband. But you can watch others sliding down.

Definitely not as exciting as being on it yourself, I know, but it appears that some people were prepared to sell their first born just to get a wristband. It’s just a waterslide, people! ;-)

P.S. If you read somewhere that the water slide is 260ft long, then be reminded that “feet” were replaced by metres in the 1970s!!!! :-D The slide is nearly 80m long!

SEEING – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 23 Jul

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The exhibition “SEEING – What are you looking at?” (24 June – 25 Sept 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring the sensory experience of vision, understanding and perception. It looks at how us human beings see by using eye tracking technology, eye tests and colour perception, but it also shows how machines see and what their limitations are.

It is a great exhibition full of intriguing exhibits, some are very clear, others need some more explanation or you should at least read the explanatory labels that every exhibit has.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, SEEING is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that children from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service and it will help you soo much more to have a better experience

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

Festival of Curiosity

10:00, Sun 24 Jul

Dublin (various locations)

I will list in this Dublin Event Guide some of the free events that are not booked out yet (at the time of writing this!), but as I said, check the full programme!!! ;-)

The two main “walk-in” events on Saturday and Sunday are
+ Curiosity Garden & Picnic at the Wood Quay Amphitheatre (12:00-17:30) with Science Shows and outdoor play.
+ Finding Dory Family Treasure Hunt from the Wood Quay Amphitheatre to many locations across the city.

Some of the free continual events on every day during thefestival are:
+ Continuous Drift – Sound installation in Meeting House Square in Temple Bar
+ Urban Escape – Pop-up experience across four rooms with different experiences exploring how the brain, the body and the mind reacts to a series of immersive rooms, environments, activities, colours and sounds. (12:00-18:00 in Temple Bar Gallery + Studios, Age: 12+)
+ Earthlings in Outer Space – A short history of non-human astronauts (An online streamed audio documentary that will be available for the four days of the festival via the link here.)
+ Memory of Place – An interactive story map of Dublin via a downloadable app.

SEEING – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sun 24 Jul

Big Water Slide in Dublin City

12:30 – 18:00, Sun 24 Jul

Christ Church Cathedral Market

12:30 – 18:00, Sun 24 Jul

Smithfield Plaza, Dublin 7

The organsiers describe:
Skeeze, is a word used by James Joyce in Ulysses, meaning ‘to ogle’. Skeeze is the starting point for this experimental poetry series, drawing attention to the voy eurism of the audience’s gaze. Rather than focusing on the performers, Skeeze will turn the gaze towards the audience. The poetry at Skeeze will be both experimental and leaning towards the traditional. Poetry that crosses the boundary into live art and theatre. Poetry that uses visual as well as aural elements. Cut-up poetry or comic poetry that actively engages with the audience will be performed. Skeeze aims to challenge the audiences preconceived idea about what poetry can be.

It seems that this is the Trad music week, although Laoise O’Brien and Michael O’Toole also seem to play classical music.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Event Marketing the odd way!

Some weeks ago I saw on Social Media that a sizeable event that is happening this weekend had seemingly some event for media to tell them about the event. I didn’t know any details because no details were shared with me. So I contacted the marketing person to suggest to keep the Dublin Event Guide informed as well.

At first I got a mail telling me that they would happily do that the next time they inform the media, but then the next day I got a phone call from the marketing person in which he firstly “interrogated” me about the relative importance of the Dublin Event Guide for his event and after declaring that he will only invite real journalists (he measures that through membership in the Journalist Union NUJ) he wanted to start an argument about who would qualify to be informed and who wouldn’t.

This is just silly!! Every organiser can invite or not invite whoever they want to whatever informational event they run or not. But if there are people offering to spread the word about your event, it is just nonsensical to try to start an argument about their importance or not.

When I tried to say that him and after repeated interruptions, he said in a huff that he would send on any press releases but that he would not provide any other information. WTF!? Is he trying trying to market an event or not? Needless to say that no Press Release was ever sent to me.

That is Event Marketing the odd way!! ;-)

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
