Dublin Event Guide

Hi all!

The Gospel Concert that I had organised for Saturday did work out really well and I would like to thank all of you who contributed either on “stage” or by coming to the gig. I very much appreciate it!

This week there are not too many things on, so therefore let me take a moment to explain WHAT type of events I am including in this event guide and why. The main condition for an event to make it in my list is that it has to be FREE. The event SHOULD be “cultural” but other free events will be considered as well. The only other exceptions from the FREE-rule are a) if I am directly involved with the gig (I hope you understand that slightly selfish exception.) and b) if the organiser is making some free tickets available that can be given out to the readers of this guide. This week we have some free tickets for a really interesting event, so keep reading to find out more.

But first the usual run down of this weekends free events:

This weekend the 6th annual Capoeira Festival is on. Capoeira is a Brazilian fight-dance, game and martial art. From tonight until Sunday a variety of events takes place in St. Catherine’s Sports Centre in Marrowbone Lane in Dublin 8 (near Guinness Storehouse). It is a little difficult to identify the free events, but one that I was able to find is on on Sunday from 12:00 until 16:00 in the same sports centre. The event is a “Batizado & Troca de Corda” and is open to the public.

On Saturday at 10:00 the 2007 Simon Fun Run takes place. If you want to take part in it you have to register online TODAY before 14:00 or then on Saturday at 09:00 at the start, which is at the Papal Cross in Phoenix Park! The run is 8 km long and a course map can be found on the website www.funrun.ie/

On Sunday another concert in Hugh Lane Gallery is taking place. This week it is “Schubert Lieder” with Paul McNamara (tenor) and Philip Mayer (piano). It starts at 12:00 and admission is free.

Now, let me tell you about some new development in “Dublin Event Guide HQ”. ;-) Raffael Abarca is a new Event Guide subscriber and Raffael is a promoter and organiser of gigs/concert/events with a latin music theme. He will keep me posted on free events going forward, BUT he offered as well a pair of tickets for a ticketed event and we will have our first competition in this event guide.

The brilliant Brazilian guitar duo “Fernando Lima & Cecilia Siqueira” were in Ireland before and performed last year at an extremely popular concert during the Festival of World Cultures in Dun Laoghaire. Due to the huge success in 2006, Raffael is bringing them back for a tour through Ireland.

Their gigs in the Dublin area are in the National Concert Hall (John Field Room, at 13:05 on Friday 26th October – Tickets for EUR 20 on sale at 01-4170000 – no booking fee), in the Mill Theatre in Dundrum (in front of the Dundrum Shopping Centre at 20:00 on Wednesday 31st October – booking and information at 01-2969340, tickets are EUR 15) and in the Wicklow Parish Church (Church Hill, Wicklow Town at 20:00 on Saturday 03 November – Tickets are EUR 15 and are on sale from Wicklow Tourist Office – 0404-69117).

***COMPETITION***
Raffa made one pair of tickets available for the Mill Theatre event on the 31st of October and we will do a draw for these tickets among the people that send me a mail with the answer to the following question: “In what year did Fernando+Cecilia do their first tour in Europe?” (Hint: www.raffaabarca.net/duo%20guitar.htm). Just send me a mail with the year and we will draw the winner out of the people with the right answer. The mail has to be with me before 13:00 on the 16th of October (Tuesday)!

An event in the category “worst advertised event” and a good change to be a winner is the Drimnagh Arts & Sports Festival that will go until Saturday. I could not find more than this www.drimnaghnetwork.ie/Newsletters/000723-Drimnagh-News-2007-autumn.pdf
I assume the organisers only want to attract locals.

Allegedly the National Bike Day was meant to be on this weekend or during next week according to one website, but this seems to be a DEFINITE mis-information.

Hi all!

Another weekend, another event guide and while from now on the number of free weekend events will go down since outdoor festivals will have to wait until the temperatures will be on the rise again, there is still a good few things on. So, get out, enjoy the sun while it shines and enjoy the culture in Dublin.

Last night (Thursday) I was at “La Marea”, which is a free event in the context of the Dublin Theatre Festival. I thought it was brilliant!! In the Italian Quarter (north side of Millennium Bridge) 9 different 10 minute long scenes are played in the street and in adjacent buildings. Each scene will take 10 minutes and the scenes are not interconnected, so you can roam around and have a look at all or some of them in whatever way and sequence you like. The event starts at 21:00 and goes until 23:00. The Italian Quarter was packed this evening. The atmosphere was great and even the weather played ball. After the 10 minute play there are a few minutes for you to move to the next location and then the next 10 minutes start. Tip: At least in ONE location (at the side if Lemon Jelly) there are two different stories told at the same venue, they alternate every 10min. So in reality there are 10 stories! If you get a chance, catch La Marea tonight (Friday!).

Don’t leave it until tomorrow, because while it is on on Saturday as well, YOU want to go to St. Andrew’s church on Saturday! Remember it is the Charity Gospel Concert that I am organising for Kevin Doyle, Ireland’s best Elvis performer (I am slightly biased!) with the Lingenfeld Gospel Choir from Germany as special guests. The event starts at 20:30 and tickets are 10 Euro (at the door). All money will go the Dublin Diocesan Children’s Pilgrimage. If you want to know more and didn’t read the Special Event Guide that I sent in the beginning of this week, let me know.

On Saturday and Sunday the Festival of World Food will take place in Marlay Park. Entry is free and it sounds very interesting: Food from allo ver the world, Workshops, Cookery Demonstrations, Music to keep you entertained while you buy, taste and cook. describes the actual event THIS year and not just the plans for in three years time, it will be a super event! Pity that it is a bit away from the city centre. Marlay Park is in Rathfarnham and there are buses going there (I think the 48A from Dame Street!). The Food Festival starts at 11:00 and goes until 18:00. I will try to go there for a little while on Sunday if I get a chance.

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir continue to play every Sunday in the St Francis Xavier Church on Gardiner Street from 7.30pm. The ‘Gig in Gods Gaff’ is an uplifting, inspiring, music-filled celebration with songs by U2, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder, Macy Gray, the Beatles, as well as breath-taking “Traditional” gospel) and much more. Get away from the stresses of the outside world, take a real message with you, or just come to say “Thanks” for good things OR just come to enjoy the singing and music and the tea and biscuits after mass. This week the Lingenfeld Gospel Choir from Germany will join the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir for a few songs and it will be huge! 110 people singing and playing music, you have to be there for that!

The Fingal Walking Festival was meant to take place this weekend, but got canceled as far as I found out, so if you had considered taking part, don’t waste your time. It is expected to be back again next year.

From this Sunday and until the middle of December the Hugh Lane Gallery at Parnell Square North will have every Sunday “Sundays at noon” concerts. Admission is free and more information can be found here www.hughlane.ie/concerts/noon.shtml. Concerts last for approx. 1 hour and focus on classical music. This week the pianist Izumi Kimura will play “Piano Shorts – New Irish Piano Pieces”.

I will in the autumn and winter months (re-) introduce you to some of the brilliant museums and sights that there are in and around Dublin. In addition I am working on a website that will contain an archive of all Event Guides. The primary means of delivery for this Event Guide will always be per e-mail, but in order to attract new subscribers, I will soon launch a website.

Now, I will have a busy weekend, bringing the Lingenfeld Gospel Choir (82 people all together!) on a City Tour in Dublin and on a tour to Glendalough and in addition organising the Concert on Saturday and Gospel Mass on Sunday with and for them. But it will be an exciting weekend!
