Hi all!

The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) helps you through the WHOLE year, not just during some conveniently placed weeks outside summer holidays and Christmas holidays etc. ;-) And for that reason, you are receiving today the Dublin Event Guide No. 341. The last two days (Christmas Day and St. Stephen’s Day) were very quiet as far as free events are concerned and some regular free event venues will be closed for another bit (e.g. the Science Gallery won’t re-open until 07 Jan). However, Dublin hardly ever sleeps. :-) From today there are lots of events taking place again and while in a minority over New Year, there are plenty of free events among them.

I hope you had a great Christmas, maybe with nice people, cool presents and delicious food. And whenever you have to go back to work, it will hopefully be after some rest and recovery. I realise, however, that a good few of the Dublin Event Guide readers are a mothers (or fathers) that might or might not have additional employment. In that case, you most likely didn’t get ANY time off, but I hope the excitement in your kids eyes on Christmas morning made up for all the work at home over Christmas.

For me the day job continues without any further holidays, but we are lucky this year that there are plenty of free days followed by a weekend then only two work days and another free day. I like it when the week is broken up like that. :-)

It is possibly the completely wrong time of the year to mention the following, but I have to. As you know, I don’t get any money for compiling the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) week after week. One day, I hope that my work every week and for the last 340 weeks now, will be rewarded somehow, but until then I will happily work 35 hours per week for free. However, I do need your help to pay the bills for sending this weekly e-mail magazine. What can you do instead? Specify: “By 31 June, I will have lost 8 kg.” Ideally also have some intermediate steps. With that you have regular check-points and you can experience the exhilaration of successfully achieving intermediary goals one after another.

And apart from the proper wording of Goals, remember what Walt Disney said:

“All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them!”

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This week, I spent more time checking Regular Events than adding once-off events. A good few things will only re-start next week, but there are some good events, that you should definitely check out this week.

You have a few last days for the Dun Laoghaire Christmas Festival, but last year many stalls didn’t re-open after Christmas, so you might not get the full enjoyment.

On Monday the “Love Dublin Day” takes place with a 2 Day Music Trail and – under the title “Dublin Genius” – a day off talks, readings and performances. On Tuesday evening, I then would suggest to go to the Dun Laoghaire Fireworks at midnight if you have no party plans. And on New Year’s Day the Big Brunch has been an entertaining event in previous years. This year, however, the Big Brunch seems to have either a different plan (or no plan yet??), so it might be good or not!

Daddyo – New Dad iPhone App

Daniel O’Connell Round Tower will get stairs again

Have you ever been on Glasnevin cemetery or even just passed by? Then you will have seen the big round tower in the cemetery. Surprisingly it is not a historical watch tower, but was built from 1855-1869 on the crypt that houses Daniel O’Connell’s sarcophagus. The round tower had astaricase that went to the top, but a bomb in the base of the round tower in 1971 destroyed the stair case completely.

I learned about the plan to re-build the staircase at a recent visit to the cemetery for online media people, but according to an article in The Journal.ie, it seems that planning permission has been granted now.

The round tower will be accessible by visitors to the cemetery (possibly for participants of the guided tour) and the view from it should be spectacular because of the height of the tower and the height of the land it is built on.

The cost of the whole project of 500k seem high to me, but I am certainly no expert on stair cases for round towers!

The construction will begin in about 2 months and when I find out about its completion, I will let you know.

Tours at Glasnevin Cemetery take place twice daily and are really interesting. The admission charge of EUR 12 for the tour is higher than many would prefer, but at least I can confirm that the quality is very high. www.glasnevintrust.ie/visit-glasnevin/tours-of-glasnevin/

Starbucks will open cafe in former Anglo Irish Bank building

The headquarters of the Anglo Irish Bank at St. Stephen’s Green was the infamous location of dodgy deals and the offices of dubious bankers. Many still feel ripped off by the Anglo Irish Bank’s behaviour and the subsequent bank guarantee that lead to the bank bailout and the incredibly high debt that Ireland has due to the bank bailout.

Starbucks, a coffee shop that many connect to “rip-off” more than other coffee shops, will now allegedly take over part of the Anglo Irish Building. www.rte.ie/news/business/2013/1223/494542-anglo-starbucks-dublin/ The planning application was granted by Dublin City in August, but it seems no work in the building has been carried out yet.

This section is intended to feature new startup companies and projects. Opportunities that people saw and that they chose not to ignore. I am, however, experiencing a little technical problem with this section, so for now I won’t be able to use it. I will keep you posted.

Alliance Francaise Photo Award

This year’s theme for the Alliance Francaise Photo Award is “Play” and the works chosen for the exhibition showcase a remarkable variety of perspectives on this universal human pastime, ranging from the (appropriately) playful to the strikingly serious, without ever compromising on aesthetic appeal. The Irish winner can enter the international contest and win a private exhibition in Paris organised by the Fondation Alliance française. Admission is free. www.alliance-francaise.ie/

Over Christmas and New Year is “Silly Season” as far as Regular Events are concerned. This means that many Regular Events do not take place, but you never know. Wherever I was able to check and find out that an event was NOT taking place, I removed it. But many of the Regular Events don’t update Facebook Pages often enough. So, if you want to go to a Regular Event, it is advisable to check before on the Facebook Page or website or ring the venue to make sure that it does take place.

The Christmas Festival in Dun Laoghaire runs from 30 Nov until 01 Jan. There will be a Christmas Market, a.k.a. “Enchanting Christmas Market” ;-) every Thurs-Sun from 11:00-18:00 and at the weekends other events will also take place.

The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) focuses on free cultural events in the Greater Dublin area because there are great free events taking place that need help to get the audience they deserve and because there are many people who appreciate free events, but need to find out what is taking place. The intention is not at all a crusade against admission charges!

However, there is one night of the year when I tend to warn people about admission charges:

New Year’s eve seems to be THE night to fleece customers. If a club, pub or venue provides a great event with some special and interesting spectaculars or live music, then admission charges are absolutely ok.

But if a pub or club normally doesn’t have an admission charge, doesn’t do ANYTHING different on New Year’s even than any other Saturday night, but suddenly expects you to pay EUR 15 or EUR 20 to get in, then we should “reward” them by going to another place.

I don’t have a list of venues that you should stay away from, but if you come across a place that charges but doesn’t offer any additional value for the admission charge, I suggest you walk away.

People’s Procession of Light

The People’s Procession of Light is a walk from St. Stephen’s Green (between Grafton Street and Dawson Street), via South William Street and Grafton Street back to St. Stephen’s Green. Assemble at 18:00 for the parade to start at 18:30 and be back at 19:45. (1 hour and 15 minutes seems very long for that relatively short walk, doesn’t it.) At the end of last year’s parade was a big firework display win St. Stephen’s Green. No word about that this year! I guess the Gathering is firmly over, so scrap the fireworks! :-/

I was at the Procession of Light last year and I’d say, the walk is mainly for families with children and not so much for anybody else. Every one is invited to bring a battery operated light/light-stick/torch/lantern and kids like that.

There are free workshops for lantern making on 29, 30 and 31 December. A total of 11 workshops, each with 25 places are available and it seems there is still plenty of availability. You have to book the workshop via the website below.

Participation in the Procession of Light also needs to be pre-booked, but it was pretty small last year and I don’t expect that it will “sell out” this year. Nevertheless, don’t leave it to the last minute and book also on the website below.

There will be some street performers/dancers leading the procession and you will walk behind them from St. Stephen’s Green to St. Stephen’s Green. ;-) Participating means that you will be behind the performers and might never seen them. The other alternative is to watch the procession walking by, then you see the performers passing by.

When I was around 12 years of age, events like that thrilled me, because we had big wax and cloth torches that were burning brightly with big flames for about 2 hours. Neither the organisers nor our parents were concerned about that. …and nobody ever got injured or hurt. But times have changed and fire/flames etc is not allowed at the Procession of Light.

New Year’s Eve Countdown Concert – NOT free!

I mention this event explicitly, because lots of people asked me if it is a free event. The New Year’s Eve Countdown Concert is NOT a free event, though. After an admission charge of approx. EUR 10 last year, this year’s event is EUR 27.50 and unless you are there quite early, you could end up seeing not much and getting bad sound as well. The nature of the location at College Green with a stage in front of the Bank of Ireland (opposite of the entrance into TCD) is that only a relatively small amount of people can squeeze in the space in front ot the stage. The rest will be somewhere further away in Dame Street.

Performers are ska band Madness, singer-songwriter Ryan Sheridan, MKS (formerly Sugarbabes), rockers The Strypes and Irish-language band Seo Linn.

“Magical 3D projections” (instead of Fireworks?) is promised for midnight.

Dun Laoghaire Fireworks

A spectacular Fireworks display fired from the East and West Pier in Dun Laoghaire will take place at midnight. It is the first time that both piers will be used simultaneously as firing sites. The best viewing point is from Newtownsmith Green in Dun Laoghaire, but you will also see it from all around Dublin Bay.

First Fortnight

First Fortnight is a charity organisation that wants to challenge mental health prejudice through creative arts. Every year since 2009, early January is the time for their multifacetted event. And in 2014 the programme includes music, film, theatre, spoken word, debate and visual art events between 02-11 January. The First Fortnight charity is run entirely by a core group of eight volunteers and understandably a large number of events are not free, but there are a few events and this week I can tell you about two art installation events this week and a few more next week:

Contemporary British artist Stuart Semple brings his world-renowned Happy Clouds to Ireland for the first time. Having enthralled audiences in London, Milan, Holland and Australia, Semple will unleash his smiley-faced helium clouds in five locations across Dublin.

“My Favourites” – Walking Tour – Night Walk

“Dublin Tribal Spirit” is a weekly event that gives you the great experience of a drumming circle with african drums and authentic tribal rhythms. Tom and Sinead, who run that event are providing lots of drums for it and teach you the rhythms.

There is no formal admission charge for this event, but donations are expected. The organisers bring their own 20-30 drums to it every week, so they are looking for donations to keep the event going.

Tom Crean: Antarctic Explorer – Play

Tom Crean, the Antarctic explorer and one of Ireland’s unsung heroes, is brought to life in this dramatic and humorous solo performance by Aidan Dooley. Hear the riveting true stories of Crean’s Antarctic explorations as one of the few men to serve with both Scott and Shackleton and survive three famous expeditions.

This event will take place in Farmleigh House on Thurs 16 Jan. Tickets are free of charge, but are distributed via a lottery and are limited to two per applicant. Mrs Brown’s Boys most watched Christmas programme

The Irish Times reported that “Mrs Brown’s Boys” was the most watched Christmas Programme in Ireland and Britain. 9.4mio people saw Brendan O’Carroll’s “Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas Special”. Very odd! Because I don’t find that programme even slightly funny, instead it is painfully unfunny and embarrassing. But clearly I am totally out of sync, so maybe it is me who is odd?? ;-)
