Hi all!

Hurray, I will be able to send this Dublin Event Guide a little earlier. Once you have it, I will still add more events, because there are some non-weekend events that I wasn’t able to get in time, but at least you will have the programme for Saturday at a time when it is still useful…I hope.

[quads id=1]

Next weekend is Open House on Saturday and Sunday, it is a two day event when some of Dublin’s most interesting buildings are open for your visits. The focus is on the architecture but a lot of other aspects about the use and quirks of the buildings will also be discussed. There will be guided tours in most places. Queueing is required. More about it next week! :-)

Some of the great subscribers (people that pay 12 Euro every year) where the main contributors this week and the outstanding amount was reduced to EUR 190. If we can get EUR 50 every week, we will just about make it by the end of this month, but EUR 50 needs YOU! Please help if you can!!! You can do so via PayPal here even if you only have a few Euro, everything counts!! I have also added another way for donations if you prefer to use your credit card via GoFundMe here.

And don’t forget that you can also help without spending a cent of your own money, if you buy through the advertisement links that are in the Dublin Event Guide or that are on the Dublin Event Guide Shopping Page at www.DublinEventGuide/shop If you want to buy from Groupon or LivingSocial or Amazon or Bookdepository or eBay or Asos or New Look or PrettyLittleThing or SportsDirect, just go to that website and click on the relevant link and it will bring you to the right place. The company you buy from will take 5-8% out of their profit (depending on the company) and will reward the Dublin Event Guide for promoting that company. But importantly you don’t pay more! Here are the links: www.dublineventguide.com/shop Thanks for using this page!

++++++++

The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 240 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help.

You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 73,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.

+++++++++++

And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime.
This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 240 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

This weeks Feel Good Slot Quote is by Simon Sinek, author, speaker and marketing consultant. He said:

Fight against something and we focus on the thing we hate. Fight for something and we focus on the thing we love. – Simon Sinek

Do you realise that in your life? And let me tell you, using love is a lot more empowering than using hate! So if there is something that you want to fight against, change it around and look for the thing that you want to achieve and then fight FOR that.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend I strongly recommend to go for a walk in the Botanic Gardens and to see the Sculpture in Context exhibition. Weather in Sunday looks ok (dry) and if you don’t go this weekend, you only have one weekend left to see that exhibition. What else? The Busker Fleadh on Sunday. Unfortunately it takes place on Smithfield Plaza, which is the death sentence for any interesting event: Nobody likes Smithfield Plaza. But hopefully the 20 buskers will be good.

And I will add one other one. Also one that wasn’t soooo great in previous years in a different location, but hopefully it will be a lot better in Newbridge House: The Spud Fest will take place because on Friday was National Potato Day.

If you go to any of the events, let me know on the Facebook Page how the events were! Thanks!

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first

www.dublineventguide.com/shop

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm or www.GoFundMe.com/DublinEventGuide

New Urban Quarter at Guinness Brewery

Diageo announced during the week that they now need less space to brew Guinness at St. James’ Gate and that some of the big site in Dublin will be developed into a new Urban Quarter, that will be called “St James’s Gate Quarter”. The whole St. James’ Gate site is 50 acres in size and the new quarter will use 12.6 acres of that.

There will be commercial, residential, office and public spaces, but no timescales have been announced for the development of the area. They only said that they are currently looking for a development partner and that the development will be phased over a “long period”.

We urgently need more apartments in Dublin, so this is a great plan. At some point in the past Guinness/Diageo had considered to move the brewery to Kildare and when you think about it, it doesn’t really make that much sense to have a factory (= brewery) in the centre of the city. But for touristic reasons it was decided to continue brewing at St. James’ Gate….at least for now.

By buying through the ads in this Dublin Event Guide, you help the Dublin Event Guide! Thanks!

Say NO to Adblockers!

I use the Internet all the time and know how annoying advertisment can be. But I also spend close to 35 hours every week on this Dublin Event Guide where getting donations is hard work and where it would be sooooo much easier if you just clicked on the links in this Dublin Event Guide when you buy products or services. You are buying anyway and it doesn’t cost you any extra, so it would be cool to help the Dublin Event Guide.

BUT this plan ONLY work if you don’t use adblockers when you look at the Dublin Event Guide.

So, please, give ads a chance HERE. Free services are NEVER free, but they are ad funded. And if you don’t help funding them then soon they won’t be free anymore.

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now the place where the weekly nationwide clever event map from our new sponsor Energia will be featured. Full details about the events on the map are on the Energia blog: gturl.eu/Energia_wk40

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

A Library of Things is a place where people can borrow items needed only on an occasional basis, or that are too bulky or costly to own. The Library of Things will work on a membership basis. Anyone can join and then take out items for up to one week. Borrowing items will be free however there will be deposits on items relative to the value of the item. The Library of Things will also act as a drop off and collection point for WeShare members (www.weshare.ie/), an online community where people can list items that have to share, or things that they need.

The items in the Library of Things will all be doanted or loaned and therefore it depends on individuals and businesses what the library will have available. Ideal items are sewing machines, kitchen appliances, DIY tools, halloween costumes, craft materials, games and sports equipment and gardening equipment. If you have any useful items in good working order that you would like to loan or donate to the library of things, or have other suggestions or questions for us, contact them at dublinlibraryofthings@gmail.com. Creative Writing Class – Taster … for fast decision makers

12:30 – 14:00, Sat 07 Oct

Buswell’s Hotel, 23-27 Molesworth Street, Dublin 2

Yvonne Cullen, a superb creative writing teacher that has taught a LOT of Dublin Event Guide readers in the past, regularly runs writing classes and workshops in Dublin and also writing holidays in Inishbofin and Inishturk.

To give you a chance to try out her class, she has scheduled two free taster classes this Saturday (07 October) and next Saturday (14 October). It is super short notice for this week, but maybe you are a fast decision maker and will jump on the opportunity. Normally to get a space on her taster class you would have to send a mail to yvonnesworkshops@gmail.com and tell Yvonne in one sentence why you would like to attend. Because it so short notice, we will change the rules slightly. Call her before 12:30 and tell her that sentence and if she has a spot, you probably will get it. Action Takers Reward! :-)

The next taster class after this week is on 14 October (11:00-13:00) in the National Library and if you are interested in attending this, you have to – as I outlined – send a mail to yvonnesworkshops@gmail.com and explain in one sentence why you want to attend. Yvonne will get back to all successful applicants.

Find out more about her programmes via the link below.

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours

10:00 – 16:30, Sun 08 Oct

Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

Walk in the Park with Each&Other + Focus

10:00, Sun 08 Oct

Ryan’s Pub, 28 Parkgate Street, Dublin 8

Each&Other are working with Focus Ireland on this “Walk in the Park”. It is a 10km walk on Sunday to raise funds for the homeless charity Focus Ireland.

Participation is free, BUT you are VERY VERY much invited to support Focus Ireland with a donation. If you read the two paragraphs below, you will understand why I am vey supportive of this charitiable event.

All details can be found on the Facebook Page below and on the website here.

Each & Other emerged from iQContent, when IQContent closed down a few years ago and if you are a long term Dublin Event Guide Reader, you have heard of iQContent before. They were the great guys who transformed the Dublin Event Guide in 2012 from a VERY simple newsletter to a much better publication. They created the database-based backend system that I use to compile this publication and they also developped the smartphone web app at m.dublineventguide.com so they had a BIG influence on the Dublin Event Guide and I still …and forever…will appreciate it! They did all that work for free!

Each&Other are a UX development company, where UX stands for “User Interface”. Most would think that this is a web development company that pays a lot of attention at how the user best uses the website or app and that is not totally wrong, but “just” Web Development wouldn’t be fair to Each & Other. ;-)

14:00, Sun 08 Oct

Dublin (various locations)

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

The meeting point on 08 Oct is at the Custom House Visitor Centre.

17:30 – 19:30, Thu 12 Oct

Dublin Food Co-op, 12 Newmarket Square, Dublin 8

Every Thursday (17:30-19:30), Saturday (12:00-16:00) and Sunday (12:00-16:00) the Dublin Library of Things will be open at the Food Co-op during National Re-Use Month (October) and November.

A Library of Things is a place where people can borrow items needed only on an occasional basis, or that are too bulky or costly to own. By sharing these items it reduces the need for material production and consumption and allows people to free up space in their homes and try new hobbies without the need to buy new supplies.

Volunteers are also needed to man the library.

Magazine Fort – Four Guided Tours

10:00 – 16:30, Fri 13 Oct

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Crazy Car Insurance Prices! Why

A Chinese friend who is living in Ireland for many years never had a drivers licence here, but this year he has decided that now is the time to tackle it. His daughter is getting to the age where he can’t pack her on the back of his bike to bring her to school and a “taxi driver” is needed. ;-)

He studied HARD, passed his theory test and got his provisional license. He found a small car that suited him, I think it is a Ford Fiesta and then he embarked on finding an affordable insurance.

He was shocked! The first insurance company quoted him a price close to EUR 5,000! :-O He rang lots more and was constantly told that his insurance premium was so high because he didn’t have any experience. He understands that, but unless the companies allow him to drive (and an somewhat affordable insurance is needed for that) he won’t be able to improve. Tricky situation! In the end he found an insurance that “only” wanted EUR 3,500 and he went for it. So from now on, he will be working close to two months every year, just to pay the insurance. He can’t understand that.

During the week something happened that will help him to understand a little bit better: A passenger in a car got severely injured and sued the driver who drove the car she was in. The case was settled for EUR 5.75 million and THAT is one of the reasons why the insurance premiums are so high.

Unfortunately this case is not one of these “crazy settlement” cases and I say “unfortunately” because it is easier to get angry about a case where someone gets a scratch and walks away with hundreds of thousands. This case is different!

We don’t know why the woman got into the van, but it seems that there is a high probability that she knew that the driver was drunk (three times over the limit!!!) and despite that she most likely didn’t wear a seatbelt. Because of these two things the settlement was a LOT lower (about half) than it could have been otherwise. But the seriously sad thing is that since the accident (3 years ago) the woman is in a vegetative state and is still in hospital.

So the cost the insurance will have to pay are HUGE and I assume that the insurance will have to pay everything even if they might be able to claim some small amount back from the driver, but he won’t have nearly 6mio in his back pocket, so they will only get a fraction back.

On one hand we can get angry about such a crazily high payment that ultimately has to be paid by all other insured drivers through their insurance premiums. On the other hand we can certainly understand that the woman is NOT in a situation where the insurance money is a nice windfall. The money will be used to modify her home so that she can leave the hospital and then will be needed to care for her for the rest of her life. Without a doubt she and her family would prefer a situation where she wouldn’t need that money. So we can see that sometimes these crazily high premiums are fully understandable, but nevertheless they need to be paid and that is ONE reason for what makes the premiums so high.

There is another reason and that is greed or maybe even lies by the insurances. It seems to be certain (and early morning raids have taken place to secure evidence) that the insurances are paying out LESS money for claims than in previous years, but they still claim that the claims grew.
