———————————————————————

Hi all!

How are you??? I ask this question on purpose as I imagine that in these times of negative news and doomsday scenario some of you might feel a little worse than normally. If you have concerns about your job stability or about your ability to repay the mortgage, I understand these concerns fully. For the rest, my advise is not to listen to ALL the bad news that the media spreads on a daily basis. No doubt, the situation is serious in some sectors, BUT in many other business sectors it is a normal and natural correction and many of you will luckily not be directly affected.

Either way, the doom and gloom will stay with us for another good while, so we need something to make us smile again, I think. How about some free events? Are you interested? How about leaving the wallet at home and ignoring the bad news while you are – guided by this Event Guide – enjoying an evening of free fun/music/exhibition etc? I hope this will put a smile back on your face – at least for a while. :-) And if you want to bring some other people on your trip to happiness ;-) tell them about this Dublin Event Guide and that they can subscribe by sending a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com.

More good news: Some of you I will meet soon!! Did you sign-up for the free Christopher Howard training course “Breakthrough to Success” that I had mentioned a number of times during the year? If you missed it, it unfortunately is to late for this course. But if you have signed up (more than 150 people from the Dublin Event Guide Community!!!) I hope that you will be able to come on the 17-19 Oct! Remember that the course starts on Friday at 09:00, so you probably need to take a day holiday on that day! Oh, and if you have signed up and are planning to come, please drop me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject “BTS”, so that I can tell you a bit more about the course AND so that we can arrange to meet up. If you are not sure if you should come and have signed up or if you have any questions, please send me a mail as well and I will try to answer your questions.

And another plan…we had two previous Dublin Event Guide Community Meetings before and it was great fun to meet others from the group. I think it is about time to organise another meeting but since the numbers have grown significantly, it would be good to get an idea of how many we might be. The previous meetings were just an informal get-together in a pub on an evening during the week. We met in the Porterhouse in Temple Bar previously, where there is free live music every evening, but if the interest is big, we might have to move to another pub. If you are interested in coming to such a meeting (it is free to come, but you have to buy your own drinks ;-) ) send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Meet-up” and let me know what day of the week would suit you best. No matter what day we will choose, some might not be able to make it, but at least I will do my best to consider the preferences of the majority.

Regarding the sending of the Event Guide, I wonder if you experienced any improvement or worsening of the situation? For me the use of icontact to send the newsletter was unfortunately not a miracle cure! There are still Spam issues, the Event Guide is still diverted into the Spam/Junk Folder with Hotmail, Gmail and Yahoo (at least for some) and I have experienced bounced mails where a rejection should NOT have happened. Hopefully I can improve the situation further, but in the meantime I need you to add the address dublineventguide@gmail.com to your address book if you are a Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo or Eircom user, this will improve the success rate for deliveries. In addition please check your Spam/Junk Folder regularly, especially if one week you didn’t get the Event Guide. And if you talk to others that are subscribers as well, ask them if they get the Event Guide every week, because all these explanations here, are unfortunately not reaching the people who are experiencing the
Spam/Junk problems but don’t know about it.

Oh, and PLEASE if you don’t want to receive this weekly e-mail anymore, just click on the unsubscribe link at the VERY bottom of this mail. Don’t classify the mail in your mail system as Spam since that will spoil it for many others as well! If you do decide to unsubscribe and you want to tell me why, I would very much appreciate a mail…it will help me to improve the Event Guide.

Please note: This Event Guide is sponsored by Esme E., Cliodhna D., Brian L., Padraig S., Kathie S., Orla niF, Jef B. and www.stickyfingerstravel.com. The main sponsor is www.kravmagaireland.com, the self-defense training centre for everyone, which provides self-defence training for beginners every few weeks. I am grateful for every bit of support! – If you think this Event Guide is useful to you and saves you money, please consider a donation too. If everyone donated the small amount of the price of one or two pints of beer not per week or per months but just PER YEAR, I would be able to improve this weekly publication even further. If you want to help, please send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with “Donation” in the subject and I will reply to you with a link to the PayPal website where you can donate via PayPal or Credit Card. Alternatively you can contact me to arrange another route for your donation. This Event Guide is a hobby project and NOT a commercial enterprise, so
I do rely on donations.
In the context of support I have to mention as well Niamh Nestor who is helping hugely by sending me lots of event notices that she picks up everywhere! Thanks!

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges or at least appear to be free unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no guarantee for correctness can be given.

CONDEMNED: LETTERS FROM DEATH ROW – BOOK COMPETITION
Liberties Press has made another book available and the competition is still running for another few days. If you haven’t entered yet, you have another chance.
“Condemned: Letters From Death Row” by Sean O’Riain and Ray, is a unique collection of letters between two pen-friends. Sean is a retired school teacher from Cork and Ray, a prisoner on death row in the USA. The book, as Seán explains in the prologue, unashamedly denounces the death penalty as “biased, racist, cruel and repulsive” and provides a good few facts and opinions about the death penalty. Ray’s letters are extremely affecting in their simplicity, describing his daily life on death row, and his dreams, hopes and regrets. Throughout the book, Seán has written explanatory notes, and added case studies, which allow the ordinary reader a better understanding of this form of retribution. Ray has been convicted of killing a man, a crime he committed as a young man and that he freely admits and regrets. For Ray his sentence is death and what he seeks is not a pardon – or pity or freedom. Simply he hopes that his sentence will be commuted to life imprisonment without parole. For
most of us to hope for something so bleak seems unimaginable – but for Ray this is the focus of his appeals. Seán Ó Riain has been writing to Ray for several years and, while Seán’s careful letters are featured, it is the simple and heartfelt descriptions of life on death row by Ray that form the bulk of the book’s content.
I said last week already that I started reading this book and found it difficult to put it down and I read some more in it this week! It is really good!
Liberties Press (Thanks Sinead!) have made two copies of “Condemned” available to readers of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and if you want to win a copy of the book please send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Condemned” and your name, phone number and postal address in the body of the mail. Your e-mail has to be with me by 13:00 on Tues 14 Oct.

DREAMERS OF PEARL – TICKET COMPETITION – Hurry!!!
Last week’s ticket competition for the Dreamers of Pearl concert (the music of Michael Byron & Benedict Schlepper-Connolly, played by the celebrated New York pianist Joseph Kubera) was won by Amy Walsh and Margaret Gallery. Congratulations, I hope you enjoyed the concert. And thanks again to Benedict who made the tickets available!

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

______Dublin News______________

COSY PUBS
During the week Simon C. sent me a mail asking if I knew any pubs that had an open fire to make the winter nights a bit cosier. I seem to remember that The Schoolhouse in Northumberland Road once had an open fire, but am not sure if it is still lit. So I suggested to Simon that I will put the question to all of you. Can anybody help Simon? If you know of any pubs that have an open fire and preferably a good atmosphere, then please send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Fire”. Thanks for your help!

PUBS CLOSING!?
No, I am not talking about the pub closing time which was the main doom&gloom topic in the Irish media before the banks considered going nearly “belly up” (i.e. bankrupt – the expression “belly-up” comes from the floating position of a dead fish). What I AM talking about is the thread/forecast by the Vintners Organisation (an organisation of pub owners) for the future if the pubs are not better protected. I was this evening in a pub because Anna V. had her farewell party (Anna, you will be missed!) and with the current prices for alcoholic AND non-alcoholic drinks, I am not surprised that even Ron Blacks was more than half empty on a Thursday evening! You might have heard the “Viper Room” on Aston Quay closed its doors for good about two weeks ago!? It wasn’t the last one and in my opinion these pub and club closures will not have anything to do with taxes, credit crunch, closing times or smoking ban, but purely with the cost of going out.

OKTOBERFEST IN DUBLIN
All week this week famous Munich Oktoberfest’s cousin is in Dublin. From 09-19 Oct George’s Dock in the IFSC is the home of the Paulaner Oktoberfest in Dublin. Once you get your head around the slightly confusing advertisement that talks about tickets and a price of EUR 52, you realise that the tickets and the high price (for not much!) is for the corporate event only and that the normal day programme and evening programme is free for non-corporate visitors. – But be prepared for high food and drink prices! (Especially if you are German or know the German Volksfest Preise, just double that amount and add another bit and you should come close!) But, hey, what can you do if you live in Ireland and are rich – by definition. :-S

LAB IN THE GALLERY: PAY ATTENTION! – SCIENCE GALLERY
The great Science Gallery – I am totally thrilled with the exhibitions and programmes offered and can’t praise it enough – is running a new programme from 04-31 Oct. (Tues-Fri 12:00 – 20:00 and Sat-Sun 12:00 – 18:00). The title is “Lab in the Gallery: PAY ATTENTION!” and it is a giant brain lab that awaits you.
“Do you sometimes walk into a room and can’t remember why? If so, that’s because you haven’t paid enough attention to the plan you made that brought you there. Our ability to pay attention is probably the most important part of being human – second only to language.
In the Lab in the Gallery, we would like you to take part in the most exciting challenge facing modern science – the nature of human consciousness. Attention is the royal road to consciousness, and when it malfunctions, it can cause real problems, including death in accidents, mental illness and billions of euro of lost productivity in the economy.
The studies we will be running in the Lab are real scientific studies where we need you to contribute by letting us look into your brain as you pay attention. By helping us, you will be helping science and the application of science to medicine, safety and industry. Thank you!
Lab in the Gallery:PAY ATTENTION! brings a working research laboratory to a public, gallery space for the first time. Become part of the research by registering to become the subject of research in any of the experiments outlined below. Please email your preferred experiment, your availability and contact details to lab@sciencegallery.com As numbers are limited please make sure that you let us know if you can’t make it as there will be a lot of interest in these experiments.” The Science Gallery Website www.sciencegallery.com/lab_gallery lists all the experiments. I was at the Science Gallery last weekend and it turns out that the really interesting experiments are for REAL research and are not really for spectators only. So watching is possible, but you will not see/understand too much. So in this case the Science Gallery is not providing an exhibition but a programme for participation. Still….VERY interesting! :-)
By the way, if you haven’t done so yet, you should register as a member (for free!). You will get lots of invitations to other events and most of them are completely free!

OPEN HOUSE DUBLIN
This is a unique and hugely interesting event. For the third year Open House Dublin is taking place, this year on 16-19 Oct 2008. Over the 4 days a large amount of buildings (136!!) – most of them are normally not accessible – can be visited and guided tours are provided in most locations. All is provided for free and it is a bit like a 3-day Culture Night that focuses on buildings and architecture. Last year I was on top of Liberty Hall (there won’t be too many opportunities anymore if it will be demolished as planned), in the Department of Foreign Affairs, in the Taoiseach’s Office in Government Buildings and in Customs House. All is completely free and in most cases no booking is required but a first come first serve system and a bit of queuing works quite well. A printed booklet will be available from the Temple Bar Information Centre and probably other venues as well. In addition it is available as a PDF:
www.architecturefoundation.ie/openhouse2008/swf/OPENHOUSE_DUBLIN_2008.pdf For the events that require pre-booking you can do so between 09 Oct and 16 Oct, so you should have a look at the brochure over the weekend to plan your visits for next weekend.

______This is odd!!______________

This is a new section for the Dublin Event Guide (for Free) and it is intended to provide space for some odd stories about events or life in Dublin. I am not sure yet, if it is a new long-term and regular “institution” or if this section will only appear occasionally or maybe only for a week or two.

If you have stories/experiences that are odd or puzzling or weird send them to me and I will include one every week of they are good.

This week I will start with a story that I experienced (indirectly) recently: A friend of mine has moved to Dublin to work here and for a little while she lived with me before she found a suitable apartment. Since starting in Ireland is somewhat challenging when you don’t have your own place (and who does in the first 1-2 weeks) I tried to help. To get a PPS number you need to prove your place of living. Since Ireland doesn’t have any registration system (odd in itself for most continentals!) the only proof of address is a household bill. Now this household bill is only being sent to the tenant/owner of a house or apartment and only after a few weeks or even months. So for a new arrival, who temporarily stays with a friend, this is a serious problem. Well, there is a way around it: With a letter from me and a Gas bill from me, my friend was able to get a PPS number. Now if the Department of Social Welfare deems such a letter and the bill of the writer of the letter as sufficient
proof of address, you would think that a bank accepts the same. Three years ago, this was the case but when a few weeks ago my friend arrived at the bank with the letter and my household bill, she was told that this was not sufficient. Instead she would need her OWN household bill to open an account OR alternatively she could bring – her PPS letter!!!! Get it? The original data on which the address on the PPS letter is based is NOT a proof of address, but the PPS letter which got its address from my letter and my household bill IS sufficient proof of address!?!?! This is not just odd, it is pure nonsense!

That’s it for this week! Send me mail if you can help with the “Pub with fireplace” question in DUBLIN NEWS or if you want to enter the book competition (see COMPETITIONS) or if you are interested in coming to the upcoming Dublin Event Guide Community meeting (see introduction) or if you have an odd story to tell (see THIS IS ODD!!).

This weekend is not he busiest, but there ARE a few things to do, so don’t stay at home! :-) And, if you are not going to the Chris Howard training next weekend (17-19 Oct) make sure you plan your OPEN HOUSE weekend (16-19 Oct) well during the coming week! It is worth it!

Enjoy the weekend!
