Hi all!

An interesting week! It started with a huge number of rejected mails when I sent the Event Guide last week and it seems that the reason for it was an exhibition announcement that had the word for “without clothes” as its title. Sad that spam filters censor in such a way! It means that I can’t include events anymore that contain any words that are MAYBE declared by Spam filters as unsuitable. :-( The other annoying thing is that many people, who should have received their first Dublin Event Guide last week, never did get it because it ended up in their Spam folder. Therefore, PLEASE check your Spam folder every week if you haven’t received a mail from me by lunchtime on a Friday!

Thanks to a generous ticket donation on Monday from a nice Dublin Event Guide Community Member and thanks to some luck on Sunday, I was able to go to the concerts in Farmleigh House on Sunday AND on Monday. Great music, very well organised and all in all a great day. And we didn’t even get wet on Sunday! Uiiiii! The only huge downside is that in my opinion ticketed outdoor events do NOT work if they are free because people stay away if the weather is not perfect and unless the organisers are then very flexible and let others without tickets in, it means that the venue is partially empty. For next year I will make sure that all the readers of this Dublin Event Guide will know about the starting dates for ticket requests as soon as possible, so that we can all meet there. :-)

Something else happened this week: An event organiser sent a correction about wrong information that was provided in this newsletter. It is never intended and happens rarely, and in this case it potentially was even caused by someone who was involved in the organisation of that event (I did only relay information I found elsewhere) and a heads-up is appreciated, not a problem. Unfortunately, however, the mail with the complaint was sent to “the event guide” (the fortnightly printed publication)! And many of you, who are receiving my weekly newsletter for while, will know what comes next: This did not please the people from “the event guide”!! I mentioned a number of months ago that they initially indicated that they would consider a legal route to stop me from using the name “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” because it was too close to “the event guide”. The legal route was luckily never taken, but nevertheless I made two attempts to find a new name for this newsletter. For a number of reasons, both attempts weren’t as successful as hoped and therefore it is still called “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. I have no intention of interfering with or making life difficult for the commercial “the event guide”, but I do know people who even get confused between Ryanair and Aer Lingus or between the Irish Times and the Irish Independent and maybe renaming will not be the holy grail. After all, this newsletter will ALWAYS be an event guide because that’s just what it is! No matter if spelled in capitals or in small letters. And the two event guides couldn’t be more different already! So, the concerned and obviously a little confused event organiser unintentionally woke up something that I would have been happy to leave asleep for another while. :-S For all of you, who hopefully tell all your friends and colleagues about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), PLEASE tell them that this newsletter has nothing to do with “the event guide”. And if you know event organisers, please tell them TWICE! …and if you have an idea for a good name that does NOT include the word “free”, please let me know (dublineventguide@gmail.com). The word “free” is not liked by Spam filters and should therefore not be in the domain name from which this newsletter ultimately will be sent.

Never a dull moment with this Event Guide! :-)

LAKESHORE LOOPS – BOOK COMPETITION

DUBLIN HORSE SHOW
This week (06-10 Aug) the Dublin Horse Show takes place. This is anything but a free event (EUR 20-54 per day), but so that you know what else is going on, I briefly mention it here. To me this is an event of “old Ireland”, totally void of what I define as culture (i.e. music and art etc). BUT, before you jump at me for my opinion, I should explain that I am not a horse jumping enthusiast and therefore this part of “culture” is probably lost on me. But I have another negative connotation with this event: From when I first came to Ireland, the Dublin Horse Show was always portrayed to me (by old Dubliners) as the “last event in the summer”. Since it always is in the beginning of August and I am stubbornly not prepared to accept that the summer is over in the beginning of August (It hasn’t even started!!!) I probably still rebel against the Horse Show somewhat. :-) Maybe a matter for my psychologist – if I had one? :-P

This is not really “Dublin News” but I still have to get it off my chest: Did you hear about the panic in Germany about the “fact” that Kinder Eggs (or Kinderueberraschungseier) will get banned? (They are sold in Dublin as well, so that is my “forced” link to “Dublin News”. :-) ) The story is all nonsense, it seems. It is based on misinterpretations and misunderstandings. The real story is this: Some consumer group is recommending against them and would (if they could) consider banning them, that’s all. I thought the reason was maybe the current obesity discussion and the fact that when you sell toys with food, kids get lured into buying (and eating) more sweets/junk food just because they want the toys. But, this is not the background at all! The background is instead that this organisation is concerned about the fact that kids can get mixed up if there is chocolate and a plastic toy and maybe eat the plastic toy. Hmmm. Honestly!!! Did kids get increasingly stupid over the years? Kinderueberraschungseier are sold since 1974 and I haven’t heard about any deaths in these 24 years caused by children chewing the plastic toy instead of the chocolate. What is happening? Why do we have to be protected against our own stupidity? Did you see the bag of nuts in super markets that comes with the warning “Can contain nuts!”? Or the warning on ovens “Can become hot!”? The only thing that I can think of when I hear stories like that are the Darwin Awards (www.darwinawards.com)

RHONA BYRNE – KERLIN GALLERY
‘It’s a roller coaster’ by Rhona Byrne is an exhibition in the Kerlin Gallery presented by www.fourdublin.com, which runs from 08 Aug-06 Sept. Four describes “Rhona Byrne has built a full-scale section of a wooden roller coaster. The tracks cut through the space as though looping through the floor and re-emerging, before cutting through the back wall and disappearing off into the city. Byrne also presents the early results of a collaborative research project with renowned environmental and investigative psychologist, David Canter. NICHOLAS BYRNE & BENEDIKT HIPP – KERLIN GALLERY
From 08 Aug-06 Sept, the Kerlin Gallery is showing a second exhibition. This second exhibition will present work by Nicholas Byrne and Benedikt Hipp. Nicolas Byrne and Benedikt Hipp stay away from a current European trend towards large, heroic expressionist painting in favour of a scale and gesture that is more intimate, complex and inquisitive. The interesting thing about this exhibition is that while researching it, I just found out that Benedikt Hipp is a distant relative of mine. He is from Pfaffenhofen near Munich and is the son of my dad’s cousin. ELLEN BRAENDE – BAD ART GALLERY
“All Smithfield” is an exhibition by Ellen Braende. It runs from 07 Aug – 04 Sept and explores the clash of old and new in Smithfield. The gallery describes: “While visiting Dublin she went to the first Sunday of the month horse fair at Smithfield. She was fascinated by the clash of old and new, modern buildings surrounding cobbled streets, the old distillery and bareback riders trotting piebalds when the guard’s backs are turned. It was like standing in a time warp witnessing ancience in a modern European capital. Smithfield fair is a hive of activity with subjects constantly moving. Horses galloping, people mounting, dismounting, dealers going from one huddle to another. Sadly, Smithfield fair looks to be the next victim of “progress” and destined to be moved to some suburban venue. IMOGEN RABONE & TILLY PARKER – THE BERNARD SHAW
The Bernard Shaw Pub in South Richmond Street regularly displays art on the walls of the pub and I think it is a brilliant idea to combine traditional pub culture with a gallery function. Many of you have read in this Event Guide that The Bernard Shaw is providing many other free events and I am sure that I will mention them a lot more going forward.
This week they are launching the exhibition “The visitors” by Imogen Rabone and Tilly Parker. The exhibition will be on show from 07 Aug- 09 Sept and is a collaborative exhibition of photographs and paintings.

GROUP SHOW – TEMPLE BAR GALLERY & STUDIOS
TBG&S show a Michael Coleman, Sonia Shiel and Hanneline Visnes exhibition entitled “I Can / Can I? on painting and potentiality”. It explores painting’s potential as an active, dynamic medium, not hidebound by the constraints of history or the weight of tradition. “Journey to the End of the Night” is the name of an exhibition that shows the drawings of Takehito Koganezawa, Alice Maher, Michael Müller, Niamh O’Malley and Clare E. Rojas. The exhibition opens on 07 Aug and continues until 30 Aug.

GROUP SHOW – BUDDA BAG
Budda Bag Dublin, the shop for new-style and super comfortable “bean bags” is venturing in the gallery field and they are showing their second edition of the “First Friday” Photography Exhibition this Friday 08 Aug from 18:30-21:30 in the Budda Bag shop in 1 Jervis House, New Millennium Way, Dublin 1. THE FOX – SCARLET CLOAK THEATRE COMPANY
For another two days (Fri and Sat), the Scarlet Cloak Theatre Company will perform in the Teacher’s Club. This is not a free event, but Eoin Langford, who is one of the actors, helped me earlier this year with some crucial legal advise for the Dublin Event Guide, so I am more than happy to now support him. MAVIS PERFORMANCE EXPERIMENT – TBG&S

YOGA – TEMPLE BAR
A free Sahaja Yoga Meditation program is available every Friday at 19:30 at 4/5 Eustace Street (bell 3, next to the IFI), Temple Bar. Sahaja Yoga is a unique method of meditation based on an experience called Self Realization that can occur within each human being. PHANTOM FIRST FRIDAY
Since July, Phantom 105.2 have been running the “Phantom First Friday” event at ALT (Andrews Lane Theatre) on the first Friday of the month. The event consists of live performances from two up-and-coming Irish bands, with a headline set by a more established Irish band. Afterwards there is a Phantom DJ entertaining the masses. Doors are at 20:00 and admission is free before 23:00 (EUR 10 after 23:00). So if you turn up early it is a free event. Tune into Phantom 105.2 or visit www.phantom.ie for more details. NORTHSIDE MUSIC FESTIVAL 08
The Northside Music Festival will run from 29 July – 28 August and performances will take place across the Northside of the city in various locations both indoors and outdoors. All music events are free.
On Sat 09 Aug from 13:00-16:00 O’Mambo & Veda will perform in the Northside Shopping Centre in Coolock. A family workshop with O’Mambo will start the afternoon at 13:00. It will be an introduction to Latin American Music and to book some of the (limited) places you need to ring 01 848 6049. From 14:00 O’Mambo will perform. “O’Mambo are a duo from Uruguay who specialise in folk songs from Latin America. Emilio Arteaga (voice, charango (Bolivian string instrument), panpipes) and Sofia Arteaga (voice and percussion) offer a fascinating insight into the musical mosaic of South America. They have been living in Ireland since 2004, performing at various festivals.”
From 15:00 Veda will perform in the Shopping Centre. Veda is made up of Dorothy Murphy (vocals), Dara O’Brien (sitar and guitar) and Koushik Shekar (tabla and mrindangum). “Their sound draws from Indian classical music and jazz with repertoire from the Indian tradition alongside original compositions. HYPER-VISION – SCIENCE GALLERY
The new exhibition in the brilliant Science Gallery is called “Hyper-Vision” and is the biggest exhibition of 3D lenticular photography ever on show in Ireland. Hyper-Vision is created by Cork-based artist and innovator Jon Mitton, using the MittonLR 1, which is a unique system enabling high quality 3D image capture of virtually anything. Hyper-Vision will challenge the viewer allowing the visitor to experience ultimate depth in pictures and to be able to look deeper into the artwork on display. As part of Hyper-Vision visitors will be able to use the Hyper-Vision photo booth, supported by Canon, to have their own portraits taken in 3D using the Mitton LR1 Linear Rail. Hyper-Vision draws from two of John’s recent exhibitions “For Alice” and “Macrompians”. The exhibition will be open from Saturday 09 August until 22 Aug from 12:00-18:00 from Tues-Sat. YOUR SCIENCE YOUR SAY – SCIENCE GALLERY
The Science Gallery in the Naughton Building at the back of Trinity College (near Pearse Street) is inviting to “Your Science Your Say”, which will be available from 30 Jul – 16 Aug. “Watch three scientists explain their research. Vote for what you think is the best pitch. The winner will receive EUR 4,000 towards their research and your vote helps shape the research agenda. Your Science Your Say is an experimental project by Ian Brunswick, as part of his M. Sc. thesis in Science Communication at Dublin City University. Visitors to Science Gallery can watch the three pitches and also record their own video feedback using the custom built Your Science Your Say polling booth on the ground floor of Science Gallery. BUTTERFLIES + INSECTS – FARMLEIGH HOUSE
The Visual Arts Workshop “Butterflies, Insects, Dragonflies & Bees” will take place in the Cowshed Theatre or – if the weather is good – outdoors in Farmleigh House on Sat 09 Aug at 13:30 for 10-12 year olds and at 15:30 for 4-6 year olds. The children will be given the opportunity to create their own butterflies, insects etc. using large sheets of white card and working on the designs with oil pastels, coloured papers and cellophane etc. Attached to bamboo at the end so they can fly them high in the sky. Spaces for the workshops are limited. (By the way: I have no idea why the 6-10 year olds are excluded from this activity, it seems a little odd that there is that gap! But there will be more workshops next week and then the 7-9 year olds will have their turn.)

DRIVE-IN-MOVIE – FARMLEIGH HOUSE
The Farmleigh House brochure introduces this event with the sentence “The warm days of summer have arrived and with them comes a special treat for film buffs who are lucky enough to secure tickets for the most sought after event on this years summer cultural programme”. The “warm days of summer” have never arrived…and my tickets haven’t either! So all there is, is me telling you about an event that you will probably miss. However, I did warn early enough about the requirement to request free tickets (and I left it too late to request mine). All tickets are gone by now and the website doesn’t even specify anymore what films will be shown. But if I remember right, it will be this movie line up:

Remember for next year to request your tickets as early as possible! Oh, and it is a “drive-in-movie” not a “drive-through-movie” as many people seem to think. :-) Funny how McDonalds influences our way of thinking. I had access to some search results for Farmleigh House movie searches and it is amazing how many people searched for “Farmleigh drive-through movies”. :-P

A number of websites still report that on the 09-10 Aug in Newtownsmith Park in Dun Laoghaire a family friendly Crazy Golf event is taking place. An example of that anncouncement is here: www.dublin.ie/calendar_details.aspx?eventid=825 However, all these anoucements refer back to www.dlrevents.ie and on that website there is no word of the Crazy Gold Event, so I think we have to conclude that it has been cancelled!

DUBLIN FOOD-COOP MARKET
Some of you might have heard of the Dublin Food Coop. I knew about them when they were still in the St. Andrews Centre in Pearse Street, however, they have moved now and thanks to Sabrina, a new member of the Dublin Event Guide Community I became aware of the Food Coop Market again. Every Thursday (14:00-20:00) and Saturday (09:30 to 16:30) at the new premises in 12 Newmarket, Dublin 8 this organic food market takes place. It is not really a market to stroll over and to browse, but it is a more serious market where you would go to buy your vegetables etc and then leave again. It is a true co-operative that runs the market and you can become a member, contribute with your help every 7 weeks or so and then get a discount OR you can just buy for the normal price. Nearly all food products are organically grown, the prices are competitive and the food products are sold by the producers, so this is Fair Trade in its purest form. dublinfood.coop/index.html

TEMPLE BAR MARKETS
And as always: Don’t forget that the Temple Bar Markets (Temple Bar Food Market on Meeting House Square and the Temple Bar Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

MOVIES ON MEETING HOUSE SQUARE
The Open Air Movie Screening on Meeting House Square on Sat 09 Aug (22:00) will be “Stranger than Fiction” by Marc Foster. You need to get free tickets before and you can get them from the Temple Bar Information Office (they are available since 02 Aug and could be all gone, but it is worth trying). Tickets can be collected from the Temple Bar Cultural Information Centre at 12 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2. Open Mon-Fri 09:00-17:30, Sat 10:00-18:00, Sun 12:00-15:00. www.templebar.ie/home_nav_2_t_13.html. On the night a small number of people without tickets will be let in if ticket holders don’t show up. So, you could try getting in that way, even if you don’t have tickets.

The museum describes “Inspired by the company of creatures from the museum’s collection of specimens, we’ll create brand new nature tales. This is a workshop in learning how to bring stories from your imagination, with the help of storyteller Susie Minto.”

BOOK READING – FARMLEIGH HOUSE
Another event for which all tickets are gone, but if you got some tickets, then you will go to the Book Reading by Dermot Bolger in the Old Kitchen on Sun 10 Aug from 14:00. Farmleigh Writer-in-Residence, Dermot Bolger, reads from his novel, The Family on Paradise Pier, which traces the remarkable true-life story of an Irish family from Donegal to the streets of Moscow, the Spanish Civil War and the Soviet gulags. The is followed by a question and answer session about all aspects of writing and publishing.

ROLLERBLADING IN PHOENIX PARK

NORTHSIDE MUSIC FESTIVAL 08
On Tuesday the Northside Music Festival event is taking place in the Sea Bank House (upstairs) in East Wall Road. Kevin Glackin, Sean Potts, Johnny Mulherne & Wally Page perform from 20:00. This event is free but ticketed and tickets can be booked on 01 8893985. Minimum age for this event is 18 (I guess this is due to the fact that is takes place on the evening in a pub.) The organisers describe: “Playing fiddle since the age of six, Kevin Glackin comes from a family whose name is synonymous with traditional Irish music. Sean Potts, Johnny Mulherne and Wally Page will join Kevin on the night and together they will perform a variety of music ranging from traditional to contemporary blues and country. The instrumental music will be mainly traditional while the songs will be straight from the pens of the fine songwriters.

EPHEMERAL ART – JOY GALLERY
“Take a Picture It’ll Last Longer” is the title of the first exhibition in the new Joy Gallery, a brand new space for experimental art in Dublin. This first event will run from 18:00 to 00:00 on Tues 12 Aug and will display ephemeral (means “short-lived” or “”temporary”) artworks including performance, workshops and installations. PINT AND PICTURE FILM CLUB
Howard Linnane (086 3614787) is – in co-operation with the pub “Russells of Ranelagh” – running a film club. The film club shows screenings of Irish short films and feature films for free on the big screen in “Russells” in Ranelagh.
The next event is – most likely – on Wed 13 Aug at 14:00. However, Howard is considering a time change due to the Olympic Games, so please ring him to confirm the time and to find out what the feature film will be. (Russells of Ranelagh is on the main street, just down from the Luas station and across from the Triangle, it is the pub with the nice balcony at the front).

DEPRESSION – AWARE PUBLIC LECTURE
Aware is a voluntary organization formed in 1985 by a group of interested patients, relatives and mental health professionals, whose aims are to assist that section of the population who are directly affected by depression. Aware is inviting to regular public lectures and on Wed 13 Aug at 19:15, the topic is “Depression: The GP as First-Line Defence” by Dr Harry Barry, G.P. The event takes place at the Swift Lecture Theatre, St. Patrick’s Hospital, James’s St, Dublin 8. Admission is free and all are welcome. From Thurs 07 August until Thurs 04 Sept., every Thursday Dublin City Council is presenting an open-air opera performance at the amphitheatre at Civic Offices (behind Christchurch Cathedral). The performance this week on 14 Aug will be “Alcina” by Handel and it will start at 13:00. With nice weather this could make for a great lunch hour.

JONGLEURS COMEDY ROAD TEST – SUGAR CLUB
Jongleurs Comedy, who are saying about themselves that they are the number one Irish Comedy & Entertainment brand, are working with the amazing number of 1300 comedians, musicians and personalities. I guess new talents need to be found constantly and to do that, they run a “Comedy Road Test”, where comedians are tested by a scrutinising public. I have no ideas if there are still tickets available, but if you don’t try I, you won’t find out. The event will take place on the 14 August in the Sugar Club in Leeson Street. COLOMBIA BETWEEN WAR AND PEACE – TALK
“Colombia: torn between peace and war.” is the title of a Thursday Night Talk with LASC, the Latin American Solidarity Centre. The Thursday Night Talks offer an informal, social space to share experiences and knowledge of Latin America with LASC members, volunteers and the general public. On 14 Aug José Antonio Gutiérrez from LASC will talk about Colombia. Since Plan Colombia was implemented, under the iron fist of president Alvaro Uribe, the Colombian insurgency has experienced a massive military upsurge. Nowadays, the insurgent forces are under heavy pressure from 380,000 soldiers, 1,000,000 informers and US Dollar 5 billion. Many believe that an end to the conflict is at hand while others remain sceptical. José Antonio Gutiérrez has been part of a human rights mission in Colombia.
The event takes place in the Irish Aid Volunteering & Information Centre, 27-31 Upper O’Connel Street, Dublin 1 and starts at 19:00 (sharp) . On Sunday 17 August, Marlay Park becomes the biggest classical venue of the year as up to 20,000 people flock to Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Park with exciting entertainment for all the family presented by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Park features family events from 14:00-16:00, movies on big screen and in the evening the 48 piece Slovak Festival Orchestra and a guest appearance by award winning Irish Tenor Sean Costello and internationally acclaimed Soprano, Celine Byrne. The event ends on a high note with a magnificent fireworks display. Tickets are FREE and will be available from local libraries in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County. BACK TO THE FUTURE – THE BERNARD SHAW
An 80s Mania “Back to the Future” will take place in the Bernard Shaw Pub in South Richmond Street on Sat 16 Aug from 14:00-00:00. The organisers describe “For the whole day and night expect an 80’s revival to the highest calibre. During the day we have old school arcade games like Street fighter, Pacman, Double Dragon and Paul’s McGraths Pro Evo Tournament with Xbox Live. There’ll be a market where you can get those shiny tracksuits you always wanted, the stonewash jeans you wished you didnt throw away and a sodastream cola that you haven’t had for years. Hair and makeup will be on hand to turn you into an 80’s dreamboat just in time for the live band Botheadz who are gonna churn out those 80’s hits. Simon Judge will be on hand for an 80’s disco later on into the night.”
The gaming part is a celebration of arcade classics, where hourly arcade gaming tournaments, among all the other things, will keep you busy. The event will see gaming going back to basics with all the classic arcade games on offer. In addition, the mini-festival will also feature some of Xbox 360’s most popular titles, including Rockband and Guitar Hero plus one of the Bernard Shaw’s legendary outdoor markets and a graffiti expo.
The event is free an there is no need to pre-register but a facebook page will be set up for people that want to play specific games at certain times. The gaming part of the event is really more for the mature users who still remember the old games and would love to play them again. But if you have no interest in gaming, you will still find plenty to look at and to do on this afternoon and night of “back to the Future”. I expect that on this page www.bodytonicmusic.com/events/generic/2008/aug/07/back-future/ the link to the page for game booking will be provided, so check back early next week! No overwhelming event this week and still, this Event Guide got full again! Next week there will be the Eurocultured Festival (www.eurocultured.com) on Saturday on Smithfield Plaza and in two weeks time be prepared for the – in my opinion – most important festival of the year, the Festival of World Cultures in Dun Laoghaire.
