Hi all!

A big admission today: I just love meeting you! It is sooo nice to meet the people that read (and sometimes endure ;-) ) what I write and to hear YOUR stories about how you found out about the Event Guide and how it enriches your social life etc. On Wednesday I was at an event and after introducing myself and mentioning the Event Guide, one lovely person said “YOU are writing the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events?” and she told me how she loves the weekly newsletter! Thanks Alice! :-) Encounters like that make my day and are the driver that gets me through the 15 hours of writing and researching every Thursday night!

[ad]

On Saturday I will run the “Wealth Creation Mindset – Seminar” that I had talked about a few times and there will be more than 50 people there, many of them are Dublin Event Guide readers and again, I am so looking forward to meeting you! I have done a lot of work to prepare a really really good exam and – if I may say so – it will be a great day! ;-)

If you missed out this time, either because you only made it unfortunately onto the waiting list or because you didn’t have time, but would love to take part in the “Wealth Creation Mindset – Seminar”, let me know and if I run the seminar again, I will let you know. To let me know, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject NEXT TIME. If you haven’t heard about the seminar because you didn’t get a chance to read the newsletter in the last two weeks or if you are a bran new subscriber (Welcome!), then you can find out more here. brilliantresults.net/wcm_seminar.htm

Our Facebook Community is now just about 80 away from the first 1000. If you haven’t joined yet check it out: www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide By joining you won’t miss out on any last minute event information I come across. You can let your friends and families know as well. ;-)

And while you are at it, tell them how to subscribe to the weekly newsletter as well: Just by sending a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com. Simple! ;-)

This week the Feel Good Slot video clip of the week is a very short video with just some Inspirational Quotes. The quotes are very good and you should watch the video clip at least twice or three times so that you have time enough to take in each quote. And if you like one or a few, write it down on a post-it and keep it close! www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTDaubFaf-k

Again wonderful people have thought of me and have donated to keep the Event Guide on the road! Thanks a lot to Tammy W., Darren B., Sarah M., Sophie P., Alessia R., your help is very much appreciated. Are you as wonderful as the five and will support my weekly work writing this newsletter? You will make me smile! Donate here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent. ;-) You can donate any amount you wish to help with or – as an option – you can now chose a yearly “subscription” on www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm
Instead whereby a 12 Euro donation will automatically be carried out every year.

You can donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer money to my bank, just drop me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend I will run my “Wealth Creation Mindset” Seminar on Saturday and won’t do much else. On Sunday I will be a participant at a seminar, so I guess there won’t be much events this weekend.
But if I had the time, I would go to the new exhibition in the Science Gallery and explore the new Luas Line on Saturday. Amma’s visit on Sat and Sun is a fascinating phenomenon and it would be an experience to see it. The Dance on Film event on Sunday afternoon would be another event on my cards – if I could.
Then on Tuesday the Climbing demonstration sounds interesting. Then “Be Inspired with Bobby Kerr” in DIT on Wednesday, “Culture & The City” and the Recycling Party on Thursday and that brings the week to an end already again.

DUBLIN’S BIG WHEEL IS NOW CHEAPER REVOLVER
I was wondering when it would happen or how long it would take for the operators of Dublin’s “Big” Wheel to respond to the disappearance of the queues at the wheel at the Point Village. After the recent launch, there were days when the queues were quite impressive for a 13 minute trip for a price of EUR 9 which seemed somewhat out of synch with the economic climate. In recent weeks the queues got shorter and shorter and if you want to travel on the wheel for a reduced price, you now have the opportunity to do that for EUR 5 on Thurs, Fri and Sat mornings from 10:00-13:00 from 14 October until 13 November. I expect the prices will go up for Christmas, because there will be a Christmas Market at the Point Village, but don’t be surprised if the discount reappears in January. EUR 9 is just too much.
The Big Wheel got a new name as well. It will now be called “Revolver”, but from a marketing perspective I seriously doubt that this is a good choice. Dublin’s Revolver? It really doesn’t do it for me!

CAPPELLA CHOIR LOOKING FOR SINGERS
Cappella is a choir for mixed voice, with approximately 30 members, based in Dublin. Cappella sings a mixed repertoire ranging from well known light pieces to Irish traditional pieces, new choral works by Irish contemporary composers, classical and Sacred Music, and – for the annual Christmas concerts – an eclectic selection of traditional, modern and international carols. The choir is currently looking for new members for all parts (Soprano, Mezzo, Alto, Tenor and Bass). If you can sing and are looking for an outlet for your talent you can come along to a rehearsal or two and stay for a trial period with no obligation, to sample the sound and experience. Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings from 19:15-21:15 the City Centre. Sight reading is an advantage but it is not essential.
For further information contact Vincent Whelan (Musical Director) at 087 242 8311 or the_whelans[at]yahoo.ie (Note: Members contribute financially towards room hire, copyright dues etc) cappellachoir.wordpress.com/how-to-join-become-a-singer-with-cappella-choir/

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 7000+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

More to come!

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

SABINA MAC MAHON – THE JOINERY

FRANK KIELY – POWERSCOURT GALLERY
‘Dubliners…and Other Faces’ is an exhibition by Frank Kiely. His work is inspired by the early writings of James Joyce, and the questions Joyce poses of life in the capital city. Love, adventure, ageing, betrayal and death. The exhibition will be on show in the Powerscourt Gallery, Top Floor, Powerscourt Townhouse Centre, South William Street, Dublin 2 from 22 Oct – 09 Nov. The opening with wine and music will be on Thurs 21 Oct from 18:00. www.powerscourtgallery.com

AMMA VISITS IRELAND – NATIONAL SHOW CENTRE
If you have never heard of Amma, you expect a brief description, but I find it difficult to describe in a sentence what/who she is. Her followers probably would see her as a spiritual guru, a teacher, a preacher and a mother figure. Amma (Mata Amritanandamayi) is 56 years of age and from India and in the past 38 years, Amma has physically hugged more than 28 mio people from all parts of the world. Her religion is “love” and she teaches that the devine is in everything. In Dublin she is expected to meet up to 20,000 (!) people over the next two days. She will be in Dublin on Sat 16 and Sun 17 Oct. The event takes place in the National Show Centre at the Cloghran Roundabout near Dublin Airport. Everybody is welcome and admission is free. On Saturday, free “Darshan Tokens”, which enable you to meet Amma, will be given out at 09:00 in the morning and at 18:30 in the evening. On Sunday the tokens will be available at 09:00 and 17:00. After that you have to queue. On Sat from 09:30 until late afternoon she will meet people and then from 19:00 until late. On Sun she will be available again from 09:30 – late afternoon and from 18:30 until very late. Have a look at www.ammaireland.org/ammas-tour.htm for details of the two day programme.

LOST AND FOUND IN TRANSLATION – 1-DAY SYMPOSIUM
Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival in collaboration with the Forum on Migration and Communications (FOMACS) invite to a one day symposium, ‘Lost and Found in Translation’, addressing themes of cultural translation and the creative impact of migration, together with the role and responsibilities of artists and arts organisations in highlighting questions of social justice and equality.
A range of cross-cultural contributions from actors, critics, theatre and art directors, writers, and curators, who will participate in debate on the day, offering provocative ways of producing/performing/programming work across theatre and the creative arts will be part of the programme. A special lunch time performance featuring Yasmin Alibhai-Brown in her one woman show ‘Nowhere to Belong: Tales of an Extravagant Stranger’ will be provided as well. (Indicate at the time of registration if you would like to attend the show.) There will also be a discounted lunch, provided by the Silk Road Café. The event takes place on Sat 16 Oct from 10:00-17:00 in the City Wall Space, Wood Quay Venue, Civic Offices. WHALE WATCHING – HOWTH
On Sat 16 Oct at 10:00 the Irish Wildlife Trust and the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group will invite to Whale Watching. Meeting is at 10:00 at the Balscadden Road Car Park. The IWT website doesn’t specify where this road is, but I guess it is in Howth. You better double-check, though.
Because the nature of whale watching involves sitting around and patience and the track requires a bit of a trek, it is not really suitable for young kids, but any that do come must be accompanied by an adult. Participants should bring binoculars or a spotting scope and dress appropriately for the unpredictable Irish outdoor conditions. There are no boat trips involved and there are of course no guarantees that you will see whales or dolphins during the event. Booking is essential via dublinbranch@iwt.ie

INVENTORIUM – THE LONG DEBATE – DIGITAL HUB
You are invited to this very special discussion “The Long Debate” which will take place on 11 November (19:00-22:00) as part of the Inventorium project, during Dublin Innovation Festival. You need to register for it and because there could be a good bit of interest, I am telling you so early.
An Innovation Taskforce report was launched earlier this year. It sets out recommendations for developing Ireland into an International Innovation Hub through developing the country’s creative and smart economy. Nine months after the release of this report members of the Taskforce, including some of Ireland’s leading economic commenter’s, industry and government members, academics, creatives and entrepreneurs are invited to discuss the nature of innovation within Ireland, and to give their views and opinions on the current-state-of-play.
An evening of lively discussion and networking, Inventorium have devised a special debate format, 18 of Ireland’s key contributors and commentators have been invited to give their views and opinions. Each speaker will present his or her viewpoint for five minutes, the emerging conversations will be documented and presented on the Inventorium website. It will take place in NDRC, Crane St, Digital Hub, Dublin 8
Registration for this event is essential: www.inventorium.org/events

GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS WORKSHOP
The use of bioenergy crops is often cited as a way of reducing greenhouse
gas emissions, although quantification of their true impact at the ecosystem
scale is still unclear and likely dependent on the type of crop, soil
conditions and climate. As part of the GHG Europe, FP7 project a workshop is being held on 27-29 October in the Mont Clare Hotel in Dublin that will address these issues and provide the basis of a review of the impacts of land use conversion for bioenergy production on greenhouse gas emissions. There are a few places still remaining and if you are interested please contact Bruce Osborne (Bruce.Osborne@ucd.ie). I am not 100% certain that the event is free, but there are indications that is might be.

ENVIRONMENTAL TAX REFORM CONFERENCE
Even more specialised, but I know that a good few accountants and solicitors read the Event Guide. Comhar Sustainable Development Council, in collaboration with the European Environment Agency, UCD Earth Sciences Institute, Smart Taxes and Feasta would like to invite you to a Stakeholder Conference on Environmental Tax Reform on Fri 29 Oct in the Clarion Hotel, IFSC, Dublin
The Conference will provide an opportunity for practitioners from a number of different countries to share experience and will also allow for dialogue amongst stakeholders on the considerable potential on the role that environmental taxes might play in the evolution of taxation in Ireland. The conference is free to attend but please register early as places are limited. Register by emailing sheila.hynes@environ.ie.

EXPENSIVE EX-TAOISEACH TAXI SERVICE
It would be interesting to compare this to the situation in other countries of a similar size in Europe: Once you have been Taoiseach in Ireland, you will have a garda driver and car available to you for free for the rest of your life, 24 hours every day and for your private use. I see absolutely no need for that and it would save us another near EUR 700,000 per year. Considering that they are paid so well and get a massive pension once they leave, I don’t see why we should finance their private life after their time as leader of the government is over.

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
