We love public holidays, but..

St. Brigid’s Day Fair – Richmond Barracks, Imbolc Fair, Fleamarket Pub Crawl, Brigids Day Festival Clondalkin

Hi!!

We love holidays, don’t we!? And we love even more public holidays. It was only last year that the public holiday this coming Monday was added. In a European context Ireland always had to few days off, so it is a welcome addition.

Have a great bank holiday weekend! There is plenty happening in Dublin, so don’t stay at home!

It won’t be warm, but it won’t be super cold either. I still grapple with the fact that it was put in the wrong months. It is bad enough that St. Patrick’s Day is mostly cold and wet, so it would have been nice to put that Bridget Day into July or September, which are now the only months without any holiday at all.

But my little gripe (meaning: complain about something – just in case you are an English student in Ireland) is so much less than the upset St. Patrick must feel. ;-) For 121 years he was the top dog! The one and only National Saint! The big Kahuna! Admired, celebrated and loved for giving us a day off and for (some of) us dressing up in silly green leprechaun outfits. 121 years he was the big guy!

And what happened then? Suddenly, out of the blue this Brigit or Bridget woman, that possibly is not even a real saint, comes a long and gets a public holiday and now St. Patrick has to share. Bugger that! Who does she think she is? What gives her the right to steal the glamour and fame from Paddy?

It seems life is unfair if you are Paddy, but we will just take the day off and we really know that Bridget crosses are no competition for shamrock shaped plastic glasses and big green leprechaun hats. So, don’t worry, Paddy, you are still the man! :-D

Donations in February:
EUR 189

(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)

If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.

The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.

Last week, the following wonderful people donated to help the Dublin Event Guide: Danny, Claudiu, Aislin, Shirley, Grainne, Fionnghuala. Thank you so much!! Your help and support is much appreciated by me and (hopefully) by all other readers of the Dublin Event Guide, because without you, the Dublin Event Guide couldn’t continue!

With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses.

Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that Euro! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 4. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.

To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)

To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

+++ Entangled Islands – Ireland & the Caribbean

05 Sept-29 Feb – 10:00-17:00 – EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, chq Building, Customs House Quay, Dublin 1 – Adm: included in normal admission

Discover 400 years of Irish links to the Caribbean in this temporary exhibition (until February 2024) that  tells the stories of a wide range of Irish people who traversed and settled in the Caribbean. It all started in the 17th century, when Irish indentured labourers were among the many thousands transported to work on islands acquired by the English. The Irish in time found their way into positions of power and privilege across the region, whether as plantation owners or colonial governors.
Entangled Islands traces this long and multifaceted history of connection through 19 key figures on either side of the Atlantic, from merchants and enslavers to poets and journalists.
Admission is included in the normal ticket price. Find out more here epicchq.com/entangled-islands/

And there is more…

+++ LUNAR NEW YEAR
Years ago we celebrated the Chinese New Year in Dublin, but then it was discovered (?) that not only China celebrates this festival and with the spread of political correctness a new name had to be found. Now the same festival is called “Lunar New Year Festival” in Dublin (not all over the world!). The handy domain cny.ie that Dublin City Council had owned was dropped and the new domain www.dublinlunarnewyear.ie/ is now used.
But political correctness often doesn’t result in actual correctness.
The term Lunar New Year is not really correct, because China and people observing the calendar that triggers this festival do follow the Lunisolar Calendar, nit just the Lunar Calendar! The day is determined by the the second new moon after the Winter solstice, so both the moon (lunar) and the sun (solar) are considered.
What does that mean? Well, to be really correct, we have to rename it again and call it Lunisolar New Year. Otherwise we discriminate against the sun and that is clearly not acceptable. ;-) (and yes, you are in luck: www.dublinlunisolarnewyear.ie is still available at the time of writing this. :-) Grab it!)
I think we should go back to the “Chinese New Year Festival” name, am I alone with that opinion?
This year the Lunisolar New Year Festival (!) will take place from 03-11 February and all events are here www.dublinlunarnewyear.ie/ The new year is the Year of the Dragon, which always makes for an impressive celebration as dragon figures are usually preferred over Rat of Snake displays.

+++ LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES
Is there ever a wrong time for learning a new skill or enhancing what you are already interested in? Maybe it is a language or an instrument or some technical skills? Or something completely different? Nearly every subject is there! Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest price most of the time is EUR 12.99. Sometimes it even goes down further to EUR 9.99 and when that happens (about once or twice a year), I will tell you. But even 12.99 is definitely a good price for what you get! – Check out the website at www.getthislink.com/Udemy22 And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)

+++ IKEA Crafting / Music / Cooking Workshops
Ikea in Ballymun runs a variety of crafting, music and cooking workshops and there are still some places available. The workshops are free and go for 45 minutes and are for children. Check them out on www.ikea.com/ie/en/stores/events/ikea-ballymun/

+++ Some more events:
Find Library events here www.dublincity.ie/events
and Trinity College Events here www.tcd.ie/news_events/events/?day=13&month=11&year=2023&search=week

+++ Storytelling and Toddler Groups at Dublin City Libraries
The Dublin City Libraries have published a list of Storytelling and Toddler groups for age 0-4 across the Dublin City Libraries. You can find it here www.dublincity.ie/library/blog/storytelling-and-toddler-groups-dublin-city-libraries

And this is it for another week! Have a great weekend and good new week.

Take care,
