Hi all!

The August bank holiday weekend is a really odd one. Either all event organisers are on holiday or they all THINK that the rest of us is on holidays. The list of events in general and even more so the list of free events is extremely short this weekend and it is a pity because I (and many others) would have plenty of time to spend time (and money) at events.
Also interestingly there are some interesting events outside of Dublin. The massive Spraoi Festival in Waterford, the Skibbereen Arts Festival and the Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival are some example. Maybe we should leave Dublin behind for a weekend!? On the other hand, in good weather, there is still plenty you can do here. :-) Enjoy it whatever way works for you!

[quads id=1]

On the donation we are making further progress and I am thankful for all help! The August bill amount has shrunk to EUR 170, but please please please don’t stop helping.
If you can support the Dublin Event Guide, please do so! I am suggesting a very fair EUR 12 for the year, that’s just 23 cent per Dublin Event Guide Edition or just about 2 pints for 52 (!) editions of the Dublin Event Guide! That’s not much if you think about how much value the Dublin Event Guide brings you every week! Higher and lower donations are also appreciated! Every Euro counts!

If you are a great and helpful person, you can help via PayPal here or if you don’t like PayPal too much you can also go to GoFundMe here. THANK YOU!!

And don’t forget that you can also help without spending a cent of your own money, if you buy through the advertisement links that are in the Dublin Event Guide or that are on the Dublin Event Guide Shopping Page at www.DublinEventGuide.com/shop If you want to buy from Groupon or LivingSocial or Amazon or Bookdepository or eBay or Asos or PrettyLittleThing or SportsDirect, just go to that website and click on the relevant link and it will bring you to the right place. The company you buy from will take 5-8% out of their profit (depending on the company) and will reward the Dublin Event Guide for promoting that company. But importantly you don’t pay more! Here are the links: www.dublineventguide.com/shop Thanks for using this page!

++++++++

The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 240 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help.

You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 75,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.

+++++++++++

And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime.
This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 240 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

This week’s Feel Good Slot is a quote again. It is from Tony Robbins, an outstanding speaker and educator (and a human being with faults and imperfections). He said

If you want to be successful, find someone who has achieved the results you want and copy what they do and you’ll achieve the same results. – Tony Robbins

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Justin M, Ross M, Daniel LG and Susan F were so great to help with a very much needed donation. BIG Thanks! Every cent counts and without all these contributions the Dublin Event Guide won’t continue.

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is EUR 240 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This week there is a Bank Holiday drought of big events. Well, nearly! There is one biggish event and it is the Rush Harbour Festival. Check it out. In the evenings a Trad & Folk Festival takes place in Whelan’s. On Monday there is also the Dalkey Vintage and Classic Car Festival.

So no super big events, but still a good few things to do! :-) Enjoy the long weekend!

Energy Healing & Spirit Travel – Free Service

This is not a competition, but it is the offer for a free service by Lica B Browne, so I decided to put it in this category. Lica is offering

Free Energy Healing & Spirit Travel

To book, you just have to send a mail to meetingbbrowne@gmail.com and quote “DEG-Aug18”. This is what Lica tells us about her service:

If your stomach hurts, you take a tablet or visit a doctor. If you feel constantly anxious, you go to a counsellor. Correct? But what about the part of you that’s not physical, who can help heal that? Some research even indicates that physical ailments (dis-ease) start off as energetic. Who can assist then? A competent energy healer like me will. Many of us also suffer on a daily basis, managing physical and emotional pains that can’t be cured with traditional methods. Can energy healing & Spirit Travel really help?! In many cases they can. You’ve already tried the traditional, why not explore something new, like many of my clients: www.meeting-bbrowne.com/testimonial. And you can read more about me and what I do: www.meeting-bbrowne.com/energy-healing. Thank you for giving me an opportunity to heal. T&C & disclaimers apply.

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first

www.dublineventguide.com/shop

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm or www.GoFundMe.com/DublinEventGuide

The end of all Markets???

This week is – after 8 years – the last week of the weekly Ha’Penny Market in the Grand Social. It is an end of an era and it comes at a time when a whole range of markets in Dublin are “on ice” for an undefined period of time.

The Dublin Flea Market, the Fusion Sundays World Culture Market, the Brocante Market, the Pure Vintage Market and the New Market Collective were all once-monthly Sunday markets and had their homes in one of two venues at the Newmarket Square in Dublin 8. But since this area will undergo a total overhaul, all markets were kicked out and there is no chance that they will be able to return to the same area. They are still on the search for a new location.

So right now we are more or less market-less in Dublin! :-O Let’s hope that the Sunday markets will find a venue again and soon!

Help the Dublin Event Guide by buying via these links:

THANKS!!!

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/whats-on/events-in-leinster-dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Devonian Plant Fossils: A window into the past

02-24 August (10:00-17:00)

National Botanic Gardens, 300 Botanic Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9

This is a joint exhibition between the National Botanic Gardens of Ireland, the Geological Survey Ireland and the Natural History Museum and it will show-case the 360 million year old fossils from Kiltorcan Quarry, Co. Kilkenny.

Kiltorcan is internationally known for its rich assemblage of excavated fossils but this is their first significant public display. The fossils provide a glimpse into the plant world at the end of the Devonian Period.
The first significant adaptive radiation of life on dry land occurred during the Devonian Period. Free-sporing vascular plants began to spread across dry land, forming extensive forests which covered the continents. By the middle of the Devonian, several groups of plants had evolved leaves and true roots, and by the end of the period the first seed-bearing plants appeared.

The exhibition can be viewed daily in the Gallery, Education & Visitor Centre. Admission is free.

Wanderers Football Club, 65a Merrion Road, Dublin 4

The Irish International Jugger Tournament 2018 takes place this weekend on the Wanderers Football Club grounds. The Facebook page explains everything for participants and NOTHING for spectators. (Maybe they don’t expect any spectators.) There is a good chance that admission is free for spectators, but we can’t be 100% certain.

Jugger is is an intriguing game and for that reason you might want to have a look! There are about 7 weapons with which the players fight each other and the goal is to get a skull shaped ball or something like that. Intriguing, as I said. Check out the explanations here.

NAFAS Project – Gig

I assume actually that it is a band, because what else would be performed in the Harbour Bar on a Saturday evening, but music.

Irish International Jugger Tournament 2018

09:00 – 17:00, Sun 05 Aug

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour

10:00, Sun 05 Aug

Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park was for a long time completely neglected, but it is hugely rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 30 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally since 2016, guided tours are provided and this year from April until end of October there will be three tours every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Only 20 places are available on each tour and if there is a big event in Phoenix Park the tour will be cancelled.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Gardai taking revenge! But is it ok?

The Journal.ie reported about a Tweet and its story on Thursday here: While Gardai were carrying our speed checks at the Limerick tunnel, a man drove by in the other direction and decided in his wisdom to beep and to make a “choice hand gesture”. (Whatever that is and more about that later!)

No matter what the guy did, it was stupid, childish and not justifiable in the slightest. He was clearly happy that the gardai didn’t get him, but you must be some sort of an idiot to react the way he did.

Being an idiot though, is not normally a punishable offence. But in this case, the gardai who did the speed check wanted revenge. They spent a “number of days” to identify the driver (using the camera recordings from the Limerick tunnel operator) and to issue him with a fine for “a combination of dangerous driving offences including not watching the road while travelling at high speeds”. EUR 80 and three points was the punishment. In addition they felt it was necessary to tweet about it here twitter.com/GardaTraffic/status/1024904377075748864 and decided to add a “choice hand gesture” from the series Friends.

As I clearly said, the guy was an idiot. BUT we also know (or SHOULD know) that revenge is never a good motivator. In the same way as the driver should have just celebrated quietly that he wasn’t caught speeding, the gardai should have just called him an idiot and should then have continued with their work. Beeping and a hand gesture are NOT enough to spend days of work.

And the offence? I wouldn’t be surprised if a judge would remove the penalty if he went to court. If beeping and making a hand gesture is a dangerous driving offence, then EVERY driver should get a EUR 80 fine multiple times every day. So I am really not sure if the gardai in this case affirmed their moral superiority. Instead it seems as if they lowered themselves to the level of of idiot driver. Their “choice hand gesture” was in the tweet and it was no better than the drivers stupid reaction.

I am actually disappointed about the reaction of the gardai! Nobody should ever have to endure being insulted by idiots when they do what is part of of their job, but revenge is NOT what I would expect gardai to spend days of their work on.

(By the way: We can only guess that the driver was showing the middle finger because the term “choice hand gesture” is NOT a term that is anywhere defined. If you search for it on Google, you will find no explanation but you will find MANY links to media articles about the same event. It didn’t make much sense to use this term!)
