Hi all!

I did something very very bold last night. Friends had invited me to come for dinner, I hadn’t seen them for quite some time and therefore decided to go. It was a great evening, but you know what the consequence is. The consequence is unfortunately that we all suffer because everything is running soooo late. I know it was irresponsible to go out. ;-) But you know, sometimes writing the Dublin Event Guide is a big chore and I need to break out a bit. There are lots of events in this current version, but a LOT more will have to be added. I focused for this current version a bit more on Saturday event and parked the weekday events to be added later, so I hope that will work and won’t interfere with your Saturday tooo much.

[ad]

The Big 500 Share is still running and still needs a LOT of support. Check it out in the Dublin News and don’t forget that you will get a free “Secret Dublin” Guide Book if you help!!! ;-)

I am posting this Dublin Event Guide again in two stages, but the first stage is already super super late because again I couldn’t keep my eyes open last night- :-( The two stages are: First online on the website and the smart phone app/web app and then I will add more events and send the final edition by mail as soon as it is finished.

This is the FINAL version.

+++++++++

And here is my weekly appeal: The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.

————————–

More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime.
This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

This week the Feel Good Slot comes with a video clip. It is not a cat video, no, it is even cuter! A Panda video! :-) 131mio people saw it on Facebook. 131mio!!! This YouTube version has been seen by less, but since YouTube is accessible even if you don’t use Facebook, I am posting the You Tube link:

Awwwww! :-)

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This week I suggest the Dublin Flea Market and the Free Wednesday should get your attention. But also check the vast amount of gigs. There is lots happening in Dublin.

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first

www.dublineventguide.com/shop

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Dublin Event Guide Smartphone App “Dublin For Free”

*****************************************************************************

The Big 500 Share!!

With the 500th edition of the Dublin Event Guide six weeks ago, we launched “The Big 500 Share”. It is a fundraising campaign for the Dublin Event Guide (70%) and for two charities (30%) and everyone who donates will also get a gift (My new “Secret Dublin” Guide Book which will be completed end of February or early March and will contain information about TEN near-secret destinations in Dublin.)

You can now donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide but keep reading for more details if you have time.

The amount needed for the Dublin Event Guide in 2014 is EUR 3400 (EUR 2400 to send the weekly e-mail magazine and at least EUR 1000 to fix parts of the smartphone app and to improve the website.) So the closer we come to this, the better, but until today, we managed to raise EUR 1120. About 300 Euro of that will go to the charities and the rest will just cover the Dublin Event Guide cost for about 3.5 months. So your help is STILL needed!!!

You can donate now via this link: www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide and if PayPal doesn’t work for you send me a mail (dublineventguide@gmail.com with subject “The Big 500 Share”) and I will suggest alternatives. Thanks for your support!!!!

The two charities that you have chosen in a public vote are the Alzheimer’s Association and the Homeless charity “Peter McVerry Trust”.

Recycling in Ireland – There is hope!

To get people to recycling correctly in Ireland is STILL a struggle, so many years after the introduction of recycling bins and brown bins etc. I know people who still refuse to recycle and living in an apartment I see all the time how in common bins, where no one can identify the culprits easily, the recycling contamination happens every day. All this is not helped by the fact that recycling is visible in our world, instead we regularly read how recycling waste from Ireland is found in far away countries NOT recycled.

But there is hope!! Thejournal.ie ran a poll on Friday asking if people should be fined for putting the wrong rubbish in their green bin. And out of approx. 10,000 answers the YES side got 71%. That shows a good level of passionate recyclers who can’t understand how anybody could accidentally or – even worse – intentionally get it wrong.

By buying through the ads in this Dublin Event Guide, you help the Dublin Event Guide! Every click counts! Thanks!

Dublin Bus Present for 30 Year Olds

If you are born in 1987 you should hurry over to www.dublinbus30club.com/ because Dublin Bus wants to give a present to the first 1000 who apply for it. They will get a 5 Day Dublin Bus Rambler ticket with a notebook, a pen, a balloon and a badge and 10 randomly selected birthday children will even get a 30 Day Rambler Ticket.

(How will check your birthdate? Through the highly reliable method (Not!!) of taking it from your Facebook Profile.)

Check it out if you are as old as Dublin Bus!

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to give recommendations, tips & tricks on how to organise and run good events. Eventbrite is the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and their support is very much appreciated! All information in this section is supplied by Eventbrite.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Gallery of Photography, Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

From the remote high Tibetan Plateau, through the Three Gorges and on to the river’s end at Shanghai, this series of colour photographs captures the dramatic shifts in landscape and offers fresh perspectives on China’s present-day development. Yan Wang Preston went to sixty-three locations every 100 km of the river’s course and photographed there whatever she found.

Humans Need Not Apply – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 25 Feb

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The exhibition “Humans Need Not Apply” (10 Feb – 14 May) in the Science Gallery is looking at the influence robots will have on our society, on our lives and on jobs. How will robots replace humans? How can robots be creative? And is automation maybe going too far?

About 27 exhibits will ask and answer these questions. When you come into the exhibition space in the Science Gallery the little desk lamp robot Pinokio will greet you with all its friendliness and curiosity (that’s MY interpretation of Pinokio’s behaviour). And the three Doppelgänger robots upstairs will move, even dance with you. But more robots and automation will also have possibly some negative effects and “The Great Disengagement” looks at how we human beings might rebel against robots when they have taken our jobs and more away.

The exhibition has many many facets and it is extremely interesting. There are fascinating and intriguing exhibits and maybe more unexpected ones like the “tickle robot”. I strongly recommend the exhibition and can definitely say that it is suitable for ALL ages, even younger kids can get something out of it.

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour

12:00, Sun 26 Feb

Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally, this year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours even through the winter months, They will take place every Sunday at 12:00 and only 20 places are available.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

Ash Wednesday

09:00, Wed 01 Mar

Dublin (various locations)

Ash Wednesday is the start of pre-Easter lent in the catholic church.

It is also the start of odd “giving up” of things in the Irish society. Some give up alcohol for lent, many give up chocolate and one of the odder ones is to give up sugar in tea (but not in anything else) until Easter Sunday. ;-)

If you see anybody with what appears to be dirt on their forehead, don’t worry. They didn’t fall and land with their face in mud, instead they went to catholic Ash Wednesday mass, where the priest applies a ash cross on their forehead to remind them that they came from ash and will return to ash again. Many people wipe the symbol off after mass, others feel they have to make a statement with it.

Free Wednesday – Free Entrance to OPW Heritage Sites

09:00, Wed 01 Mar

Various heritage locations in Dublin

Entry charges at some OPW Heritage sites are waived once a month, on the “Free Wednesday”, the first Wednesday of the month. The Office of Public Works (OPW), who looks after the state owned heritage sites, wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therefore started this great initiative in 2011.

Most OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:
+ Dublin Castle, State Apartments
+ The Casino, Marino (closed until 16 March)
+ Rathfarnham Castle
+ Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange
+ Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow

In the past Kilmainham Gaol (the most popular site) was also on that list, but it was removed in May 2016 and is sorely missed.

As you can imagine, this event is very popular and therefore it is strongly recommended to arrive early at the venues. Once the day’s tickets are given out, you will not get access anymore.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Watch out! Sheerios expected to be on a stampede on Thursday night!

RTE has reported that a number of Irish record shops will be open from Midnight on Thursday 02 March so that people can by the newest record by Ed Sheeran IMMEDIATELY when it is released.

WTF? It is ridiculous enough that Apple Stores open at midnight when a new iPhone is released considering that you could just stay in bed until the next morning and then leisurely stroll into your Apple Store and buy it at a time when normal people buy stuff. But ok, we know that Apple fan boys and girls need to tell their friends that they were there first.

That “virus” has now spread to Ed Sheeran fans? Apparently his fans are called “Sheerios”. (Not sure though if it is a flock of Sheerios or a herd of Sheerios or a gaggle of Sheerios that will be in Tower Records on Thursday night.)

Sure there is nothing wrong with being a big fan and there is also nothing wrong with shopping at midnight (I have been in Tesco myself around that time when many Tesco’s in Ireland were still open 24hrs.) but the mad run or queueing for something that is NOT scarce and will be plentiful in shops on the next day, just seems odd.
