Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)

Happy New Year to a fifth of the world!

Dublin Lunar New Year Festival, Spike Cello Festival, Le Zeitgeist Flea Market

Hi!!

Happy New Year (in the Lunisolar Calendar)! This Saturday (10 Feb 2024) is the first day of the new year in China and a number of other Asian countries. The Chinese New Year usually falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice, so it is not the lunar calendar on its own, but the lunisolar calendar, that determines the day (even if it is usually incorrectly just called “Lunar New Year”).

The whole world has a population of 7.88 billion and China alone is the home of 1.41 billion. So close to a fifth of all people on this planet are living in one country. And they are all celebrating now for the next 2 weeks! But there are a few (!?) more and these Asian countries have a lot of people Singapore, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam together are another 610 million. So more than 2 billion people are celebrating the dragon this weekend!

Looking for these numbers, I found out that Indonesia has a population of 274 million, the Philippines count 113m and Vietnam 94m. “Big” Germany (in a European context) has ONLY 83m. I never realised! Amazing what you learn when you go down the rabbit hole of research for a Dublin Event Guide intro. :-D

Yes, the new year is the year of the dragon. And according to the Independent newspaper who have asked a Chinese astrologist (www.independent.co.uk/life-style/chinese-new-year-2024-year-of-dragon-b2493284.html) “this will be a year of change”. Well, I bet this astrologist will be 100% correct. ;-) EVERY year is a year of change, at least as long as I have been alive. ;-)

I have gathered lots of events for you again and you will find them all below. Every single one is free. That’s the big difference between the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and other event publications. Here everything is free!

The upcoming week will be busy in another way as well because there will be TWO other significant days coming up: Some will celebrate Tuesday as Pancake Tuesday. It is the day before Ash Wednesday (yes, super early this year!). On Pancake Tuesday, people that wouldn’t touch a pancake for the rest of the year feel compelled and obliged to eat pancakes (with lemon, powder sugar or Nutella). It is a British thing that was wholeheartedly adopted in Ireland it seems. And the idea behind it seems to be: Last time indulging on lots of food before the 40 day lent starts before Easter and using up the ingredients that won’t be eaten plentiful during lent.

And the second day of significance next week is Valentine’s Day. If you have a loved one in your life, hopefully you will not only celebrate the love on that one day a year. And if you are not in a relationship, then do something that celebrates you and the love you have for yourself and the other important people in your life.

Donations in February:
EUR 222

(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)

If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.

The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.

Last week, the following wonderful people donated to help the Dublin Event Guide: Brendan, Marian. Thank you so much!! Your help and support is much appreciated by me and (hopefully) by all other readers of the Dublin Event Guide, because without you, the Dublin Event Guide couldn’t continue!

With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses.

Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that Euro! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 4. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.

To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)

To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

+++ Entangled Islands – Ireland & the Caribbean

05 Sept-29 Feb – 10:00-17:00 – EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, chq Building, Customs House Quay, Dublin 1 – Adm: included in normal admission

Discover 400 years of Irish links to the Caribbean in this temporary exhibition (until February 2024) that  tells the stories of a wide range of Irish people who traversed and settled in the Caribbean. It all started in the 17th century, when Irish indentured labourers were among the many thousands transported to work on islands acquired by the English. The Irish in time found their way into positions of power and privilege across the region, whether as plantation owners or colonial governors.
Entangled Islands traces this long and multifaceted history of connection through 19 key figures on either side of the Atlantic, from merchants and enslavers to poets and journalists.
Admission is included in the normal ticket price. Find out more here epicchq.com/entangled-islands/
