Hi all!

It was an epic weekend last week with five big events and one better than the next. I spent most of Saturday and Sunday at the Dublin City Soul Festival and with good music and super weather, the weekend was outstanding. If you want to see for yourself, have a look at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page where I posted a picture that comprises the relaxed and entirely sunny atmosphere: www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide (While you are there, make sure you LIKE the Facebook page!

[ad]

Earlier this year I mentioned a number of times that this year will bring some big changes/great news for the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” and you might have realised that I was a bit quieter about it for a while. Well, it is time to talk again! :-) But all I will say for now is this: Make sure that you DEFINITELY check out the Dublin Event Guide e-zine next week. You will not regret it! ;-)

Because of the changes (Be patient!) I will have to use a different Email Service Provider, so there could be some delivery challenges initially, therefore if you don’t find the Dublin Event Guide in your Inbox, please check your Spam/Junk folder. I hope that all goes well, but hiccups are bound to happen when things get changed. I will do my best to keep them to a minimum.

One more week to tell all your friends, family and colleagues about the Dublin Event Guide and to get them to experience the new e-zine from Day 1. Last Friday afternoon I was on the Scott Williams Show on radio station “Q102” to talk about free events for the upcoming weekend. But I need your help to spread the word!
Your friends/family/colleagues can subscribe on www.dublineventguide.com or they can go to www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide (Click on “Join Email List” at the top)! In addition you can tell the world by printing this poster and hanging it up in your gym, work place, local supermarket etc.: www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf Thanks!

———
We are more than 8500 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide With your help, we will make it to 10,000 in no time! Join in and click LIKE on the facebook page and tell your friends! You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page and you can share your free events directly there with the other people in the Dublin Event Guide Community.

——
The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive!

This week I am asking you to read a short story about Oziola McCarthy, a poor black laundry woman in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, who saved money daily and gave it away again for the benefit of a trust. I find her story very inspiring and moving and maybe you’ll feel the same! www.alearningaday.com/2011/01/1-dollar-every-day.html

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

Last week not a single person thought of helping with a donation. That’s not good news. Your help is absolutely needed to ensure that you all will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. From next week the cost of sending the weekly newsletter will double and your help has never been need more! If you have never helped with a contribution, ask yourself if the Dublin Event Guide has helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about …and then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost (I need about 4 donations every week for that) a or even to improve the Event Guide (anything above 4 donations).

I am giving 25-30 hours every week for no pay or reward, so that you get the Dublin Event Guide every week. And all I ask for is just 25 cent per week from you or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!? :-)

BTW: If you think that funds from advertisement should be enough because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY after clicking or if you buy at a later stage without using the links in my ads, I get nothing. So it helps if you use the links I provide every time you want to purchase something. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

Bank Holiday weekends are usually not the busiest because too many people leave Dublin for event organisers to be interested in running their event at this time. But there are quite a number of events taking place.

On Saturday I plan to go to the Science Gallery because the current Science Gallery Lab “Happy” is coming to an end this weekend. Then later the Dublin Fire Brigade Parade sounds like it will be an interesting spectacle. On Sunday then the main event is the Bavaria City “Racing” event in the City Centre. I am a little hesitant about the event, but will give it a go and see how it goes.

Monday will be monopolised by the Women’s Mini Marathon, but since I am not female and am not taking part, I will give this event a miss. :-) Instead I will probably go to Bloom, the gardening festival in Phoenix Park (Sean Moncrief on Newstalk called it “Woodstock for middle class people” :-D).

During the week, check out Green Drinks on Tuesday and definitely the Dublin Shakespeare Festival, which starts on Wednesday.

______Competition______________

YOGA CLASSES – CITY CENTRE – TICKET COMPETITION
Every Monday from 20:00-21:15, Karolina Guzek, a yoga enthusiast and certified and experienced yoga teacher is running a Yoga class in the Markievicz Leisure Centre, Townsend Street, Dublin 2, which is only about a 4 minutes walk away from College Green and very near Tara Street.
Karolina would like to share her passion about Yoga with you to show you all the benefits of it and her approach to yoga is a friendly, peaceful and down to earth one, making her classes accessible to people of all ages and abilities. You don’t have to be strong and flexible, instead her classes are designed so that Yoga can be enjoyed by everyone. Her Yoga classes are EUR 10 if you just want to drop in, but if you book 6 classes you only pay EUR 50 and if you mention the “Dublin Event Guide Discount” you will only have to invest EUR 45 for 6 weeks of a complete workout for your mind, body and soul! Classes are suitable for Beginners and Improvers! To book your place directly, send a mail to yogakarolina@gmail.com or call 087-7955175.
Karolina has made a number of tickets available and the following people won a free place on her class on Monday 11 June: Clare Phalan, Ylenia Morselli, Denise Kehoe, David Wheelahan, Marta Lewandowska and Brían Ó Murchú. Congrats and you will hear from me! www.facebook.com/YogaClassesDublin

BLOOM IN THE PARK
Bord Bia’s Bloom Festival is taking place from Thurs 31 May – 04 June in Phoenix Park. Bloom is Ireland’s largest gardening, food and family event and last year 90,000 people visited the event. Tickets for the Festival cost from EUR 15 (when bought online) and EUR 20 when bought at the door. Discounted tickets are still available on www.ticketmaster.ie/bloomdiscount (use the promotional code DEG12 to get a EUR 2 discount). Children get in for free!
Bloom has something to offer for all ages. It is showcasing the finest Irish food, drink and of course horticulture. Budding gardeners will get lots of inspiration and opportunities to pick up some beautiful plants, flowers, seeds and shrubs. Or if you want to explore growing your own fruit and vegetables then you’ll get lots of tips on how to start at the show. But if gardening isn’t your thing then you’ll still have plenty to keep you busy including the extensive Food Village with plenty of artisan producers; the “Best in Season” tent features growers of seasonal fruit and vegetables; the Chef’s Summer Kitchen will host live cooking demonstrations from some of Ireland’s much best known chefs such as Neven Maguire, Catherine Fulvio, Donal Skehan and Rozanne Stevens.
With an outdoor music stage, picnic area, engaging spaces, kids playground and lots more, the Bloom Festival is a great way to spend the bank holiday weekend. Find out all details on www.bloominthepark.com
I got some tickets to run a competition two weeks ago and the only reason why I mention this event again, is because the organisers asked me to clarify that tickets at the door are not EUR 15, but EUR 20. All ticket details are here bloominthepark.com/tickets/ and the opening times are 10:00-18:00 every day until Monday. Check out the parking and Shuttle Bus details on the website, because I expect lots of traffic delays in Phoenix Park and when trying to get through the City Centre. Plan your trip well!

EURO2012 SPECTACLE – THREE ON THE QUAY
The mobile phone company “Three” are the Official Supporter of the Irish Football Team and that requires that they organise good support. To do that Three has organised a big fan event at George’s Dock in the IFSC (next to the CHQ building) on the days when the Irish Team plays. The events take place on 10, 14 and 18 June, when the Irish Team plays against Croatia, Spain and Italy on the respective dates. In addition to the Big Screen for the match, a festival of fun for all of the family with a host of entertainment, food and drink concessions, penalty shoot-out games, DJ, street performers will be provided and the festival starts at 17:00. (The matches start at 19:45.) The platform in George’s Dock can only take a relatively small number of people, so you have to apply for a free ticket to the event at www.3football.ie/support-events/three-on-the-quay/

MCDONALDS WILL MOVE INTO TEMPLE BAR
Mobile Phone shops at every corner or the curse of Spar, Londis and Centras everywhere, really is not a positive impact on our streets of Dublin. Now another development will impact a whole area negatively. I think the move of McDonalds into Temple Bar is bad news for Temple Bar. The new fast food restaurant will move into what was recently Frankies Steakhouse and Bar at 42 Temple Bar Square. Pity! jrnl.ie/471385

STREET PERFORMANCE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP – CHANGE OF DATES
Many of you have been to the Street Performance World Championship in previous years. It is a brilliant and free festival in Merrion Square where you will see the best Street Performance shows over four days. But if you expected the festival to take place again in June as in previous years (and as originally indicated after last years’ festival: 14-17 June), you will be surprised to see that the new 2012 date for the SPWC is the weekend of 19-22 July. I had reserved the originally planned date and the new date doesn’t suit me at all, but the Street Performance World Championship is a MUST GO festival, so I need to see how I can re-arrange things. www.spwc.ie

CROKE PARK SKYLINE – OPENING
The new Croke Park Skyline opened on Fri 01 June and will be added to Dublin’s tourist attractions. Croke Park is hoping to make a lot of money with it over time, but had very high upfront costs (more than 1 mio). The tour starts with a Health & Safety Briefing, then will continue with a 100 step climb up to a walk way on the 44m high roof level of Croke Park. The walk is only 600 metres long and has 5 stops at platform where the audio guide will give you more information about what you see from that location of the platform. After the tour along the walk way, you climb down again on the other side of Croke Park.
I wasn’t one of the lucky people who were invited to the press launch of the walkway, so I haven’t experienced it myself and can’t tell you if it is great or not. But many of the tourist attractions you will see in a very far distance are well or better described in the (“open-top”) tourist bus tours for which you pay around EUR 16. Alternatively you can see all the locations from the Gravity Bar on the Guinness Store House for an admission of EUR 12.96 (when booked online). The added thrill of the skyline tour is meant to be the height of the tour, but that thrill comes with a tall price tag. The 2 hour tour costs EUR 25. So for me the tour is too pricey, but maybe it will soon be offered on Groupon (or similar) and then the picture could be different. Alternatively book it for the first two weeks and get a 15% discount, but check the instructions in the News section on the website under “Special Introductory Opening Offers”. www.skylinecrokepark.ie

PASSPORT TO FAMILY LEARNING – DUBLIN SITES
For 1000 families there will be great news this summer. Eight sites in Dublin got together and developed the “Passport to Family Learning” and will make it available for free to 1000 families. When you visit one of the eight sites, you present your passport and this will allow your family either free entry or entry at a discounted rate. The participating sites are St Patrick’s Cathedral, Chester Beatty Library, National Print Museum, Rathfarnham Castle, St Audeon’s Church, Marsh’s Library, Castletown House and Dublin Castle. The passport can be used from 01 June until 01 September and you can get it at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, but you better hurry, because 1000 passports is not a lot. I think the idea behind this initiative is great, but 1000 passports seems to be a rather small number, so maybe there are some improvements possible. In addition there should be a further incentive to get all the stamps. This could be a draw amongst all the people that send back their fully stamped passport or something similar. www.stpatrickscathedral.ie/passport-to-family-learning.aspx

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 10,000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. ______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Sun 11:00-18:00 www.dublincitysoulfestival.ie/art/instrumental-art-exhibition

BAVARIA CITY RACING – CITY CENTRE
Sun 03 June: 12:00-17:00: Between Convention Centre and College Green
This sounds like a great spectacular and being interested in Formula 1, the Bavaria City Racing Dublin sounds like a great event for me. But then you start thinking and you realise that despite the name, there will NOT be any racing, just some show-boating. From early on I expected also that not too many drivers will come because it is just between two important Formula 1 races which take place on two different continents (Last week: Monaco. Next weekend: Canada). And it now turns out that only Jenson Button will come to Dublin. Better than nothing! But at the same time a bit disappointing. The event is free, but about 100,000 people are expected to come and if you have ever been at the St. Patrick’s Day parade you know how much you will be able to see if you are in the 5th row behind the barrier. So all this considered, suddenly the event doesn’t sound THAT cool anymore. BUT, I will still go and hope against probability that I will find this perfect spot and that all the other people will stay at home. ;-)
Instead of a City Race, there will be demonstrations of Formula 1, WRC, Superbikes, Stunt Drivers, Super Cars, Drifters.
Because the website is a little complicated, I have the FULL schedule posted below:
Bavaria City Racing Dublin – Event Schedule

17:05:00 Show Ends
You see that there is not much racing going on! The route of the car parades will be from North Wall Quay, to Custom House Quay over Butt Bridge and onto Burgh Quay on the South Quays. From there onto D’Olier St, College St, around College Green, down Westmoreland St and onto Aston Quay before travelling back to North Wall Quay. A map is here www.bavariacityracing.ie/bcrd/route-map
There are two main grandstand performance zones, on O’Connell Bridge and Custom House Quay and they are for ticket holders only (EUR 75). There is Pit Stop access too, if you have even deeper pockets: Tickets are EUR 165. www.bavariacityracing.ie
The City Centre will be more or less closed down and if you need to get somewhere fast, you better check the details of the extensive road closures: www.aaireland.ie/AA/AA-Roadwatch/Event-Guide/Bavaria-City-Racing-Dublin/Bavaria-City-Racing-Dublin.aspx

BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY
Hurray! Another Bank Holiday Monday! :-) Make the most of it, because it is the last one until August. As far as events are concerned, the June Bank Holiday is an interesting one. Words and pictures” is the talk by Prof. Claudio di Benedetto (Director of the Uffizi Library in Florence) in which he “invites the audience to join him on a journey comparing their personal knowledge of Florence with the impressions of travellers from different languages, cultures and times. They were women and men – Irish, Spanish, German, English, American, French, Italian – who recorded their impressions of Florence several centuries ago or just a few decades before us in their notes and drawings, which show the city as it appeared through the centuries to the eyes of its visitors. At the end of the journey we will have an “anciently new idea of Florence” of the “Grand Tour”.”

THE ARTVERTISER WORKSHOP – SCIENCE GALLERY
Sat 09 + Sun 10 June: 12:00-18:00 – Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
As an artist, have you ever wanted to reclaim advertising space, replacing billboard images and marketing slogans with your own work? The Artvertiser is a software platform for doing just that; replacing billboard advertisements with artististic work that can be viewed with augmented reality apps in real time. In a free two-day workshop at Science Gallery, selected visual artists will work with The Artvertiser creators – Julian Oliver, Damian Stewart and Arturo Castro – to create a city-wide art exhibition. Participants will be invited to hack advertisement space around the city converting it into interactive, electronic artworks, disrupting the relationship between the advertiser and the viewer on the street. The Artvertiser workshop is an early element of HACK THE CITY, the Gallery’s major city-wide summer programme that will call for citizens of Dublin to join leading artists, designers and scientists to retake control of the city. This two-day workshop is free and is open to visual artists upon invitation. DODGY IRELAND – UNDEMOCRATIC ELECTIONS!?
A few years ago, a friend of mine was working in Africa for a while and told me about election fraud that was happening everywhere because there was no reliable electoral role (a list with all voters) because people were registered a number of times and voters that had died were not taken off the list. And the worst was that there was no proper ID system to check if people had voted or not. Because of these problems election observers were regularly sent to that country and it was declared undemocratic.
On Thursday morning I found an article about the elections in Ireland on www.thejournal.ie. The article described that you do NOT have to bring your voters card to the polling office, that you don’t even need am ID in all cases and if you need an ID, a company ID card (which everyone with a laminator can easily fake) will do: jrnl.ie/469533 Is it just me, or does that system sound as reliable and trustworthy as the system in that African country a number of years ago!? Shocking! In the African country they then used indelible ink to make sure that nobody will vote twice. In Ireland you can still vote as often as you like if you are just ruthless enough. Incredible!
