Hi all!

I don’t know where to start. :-) Me speechless is rather rare, but 75 of you, lead by the lovely Cornelia Koller managed to shut me up and surprise me hugely last week at our brilliant “Dublin Event Guide Christmas Party”.

It was a great night and more than 100 people came. Thanks for coming! I know that at least 20 or so more had planned to come but were stopped by the weather. Thanks for trying! ;-) I arrived at 20:00 and a few were already waiting and then it continued with people arriving until around 02:00. I TRIED to talk to everybody at least for a little bit, but I realised afterwards that a small number of people didn’t get my proper attention because soo much was happening all the evening. If you expected more time from me, please come back to our next Event Guide Party (soon!!!) and I will promise my undivided attention then. :-).

I hope you all had as much a good time as I did and I hope that you all met a few new people. What a nice bunch of people you all are! ;-) If you missed out this time, make sure you come next time!! It is just a snapshot as I only pictures once during the evening. Next time we need to get a dedicated person to take pictures throughout the evening to capture it better. ;-)

This week I will go to the EYP Party tonight and I might see some of you there. Then I will go to Christ Church Christmas Market on Saturday and will probably go to the other two another time as well. I like Christmas Markets. ;-) MAYBE I will manage this time to go to the Flamenco Indalo Open Door on Saturday as well and in the evening a friend’s birthday party will “win” my attendance.
On Sunday the Vertigo Jazz Trio, Jezzebelle in Bruxelles and my weekly Gardiner Street Gospel Choir are conflicting with each other, but if I could I would go to all three.
During the week there is a surprisingly large amount of events taking place and on Wednesday we will have a Krav Maga Christmas Party as well. Looking forward to that! ;-) The ARC-Dance Christmas Event on Thursday looks interesting if that dance/music is your thing, but if a COMPLETELY different spectrum of music interests you more, have a look at the Hep Cat Club in Monday. YOGA CLASSES – Free TASTER CLASS
Svetlana contacted me during the week and offered free places on yoga courses and she was very generous! She is offering 9 places in Yoga courses in total, which means that for each of the dates Tues 07, 14 + 21 she is offering three places. I have done the draw and have or will let the winners know directly. The names will be listed here then next week.
The classes are held from 19:00-20:30 in Yogabase, located in central Ranelagh. The class is taught by a certified Iyengar yoga teacher. The Iyengar method makes yoga accessible and safe for everyone regardless of physical condition or age. Yoga props are used to support and tailor the practice to individual student’s needs. WATER RESTRICTIONS COULD CONTINUE
The Water Supply Restrictions that Dublin City has imposed on all households in Dublin could continue over the weekend according to this report:
www.rte.ie/news/2010/1209/water.html Currently more than 375 Megalitres of water is used every day and the water treatment plants in Dublin can only produce approx. 360 Megalitres per day. As a consequence the water supply has been turned off for the last three days between 19:00 and 07:00. Because the situation hasn’t changed significantly, this could continue.

LAHZA PROJECT – PHOTO EXHIBITION – CIVIC OFFICES
Dublin City Council (The Atrium, Civic Offices Wood Quay Dublin 8) will host a photo exhibition with images from the Lahza Project from Mon 13 Dec until Fri 17 Dec. Launched in 2007, Lahza seeks to identify young Palestinians with artistic potential and to develop that talent through photography. The goal is to create a photographic record of daily life in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon as seen through the eyes of children. www.zakira.org

30x30x30 – MAD ART GALLERY
This winter exhibition by Katarzyna Gajewska entitled “30x30x30” signifies the space, the size, the number and the platform for visual celebration of 30 beautiful people with the strong connection with the art and entertainment world. Some of the extraordinary faces are Loie Fuller, Anais Nin, Marcel Duchamp to Bettie Page and Captain Spaulding. ART PARK LAUNCH – SPENCER DOCK
The Sebastian Guinness Gallery launches “The Art Park” at the rear of the Convention Centre Dublin (CCD) in Spencer Dock on Mayor Street Upper on Tues 14 Dec (17:00-20:00). “The Art Park has been created as a community, public art and recreational space for the purposes of a local, national and international contemporary visual arts programme. Utilising the rear wall of the CCD, The Art Park features Dublin’s largest outdoor visual arts screen and will provide a blank projection canvas for digital media, video art, animation, film, photography and literature. The recreational space of this urban park will provide an additional platform for outdoor sculpture, exhibitions and community initiatives.”
For the launch a selection of pictures from “Phot20graphy” by fashion and portrait photographer Barry McCall will be featured. Some of the pictures will be of Liam Neeson, Gabriel Byrne, Imelda May, Anna Friel, John Banville, Brian O’Driscoll, Saoirse Ronan, Stephen Rea, Van Morrison, Gavin Friday, Boyzone and David Norris.
Hmmm, nice spin to the story! The “Park” is a very very small space at the back of the CCD that feels totally artificial. The wall is a massive big wall, far away from where people are that are looking for art. CHRISTMAS ART FAIR – CFCP
On Fri 10 Dec until Sun 19 Dec from 12:00-22:00 the Centre for Creative Practices (CFCP), 15 Pembroke St Lower, Dublin 2 will have a Christmas in the Gallery Art Fair. Admission is free. MOVING WORLDS FESTIVAL
From 08-11 Dec the Festival “Moving Worlds: Cinemas of Migration” will be taking place. It is a collaboration between FOMACS (Forum on Migration and Communication), EUNIC (European Union National Institutes of Culture), Alliance Française, British Council, Goethe-Institut, Instituto Cervantes and the Austrian Embassy. The programme contains contemporary documentaries and drama films from different countries and a selection of masterclasses, workshops and special events with filmmakers and digital media practitioners. INK SLINGERS – CREATIVE WRITING HOUR – WRITERS’ CENTRE
The Ink Slingers Creative Writing Hour takes place every Friday at 13:00 at the Irish Writers’ Centre. It is a free creative writing session that is organised and led by the Centre’s voluntary arts administrators. The hour includes writing exercises and prompts to get ideas flowing. AWARE 10k CHRISTMAS FUN RUN – POSTPONED
The Aware 10k Christmas Fun Run that was planned for Sat 11 Dec at 10:00 has been postponed to 15 Jan due to the ice that is still in Phoenix Park. DOCKLANDS CHRISTMAS MARKET
This year’s Docklands Christmas Market in the IFSC, next to the chq Building was meant to be completely different and much better and “have a German twist” because it is organised by a German company. Up to 100 traders were promised and I was sooo looking forward to it. Well, it is not absolutely awful, but I am disappointed. It is a LITTLE better than in previous years and definitely worth a visit, but in the 40,000 inhabitant city I come from the Christmas Market is significantly better than the Dockland’s market. Don’t get me wrong, it is really an ok market, but my expectations were huge. ;-) Enjoy it nevertheless and have some Gluehwein for me. FITZWILLIAM CHRISTMAS MARKET
For the first year, a second Christmas Market will take place in Dublin. Competition is good, but it is a yard stick as well. You better get your act together if you want to compete with an established player and the guys at the Fitzwilliam Market did not get their act together on the first weekend. I went there last Saturday evening (18:00) when the market was meant to open on Friday and be open on Sat until 21:00. At 18:00 three (!!!) stalls were open and the majority of the stalls didn’t even have electricity installed. Poor show. Maybe “toothing pains” I thought and went there again on Sunday. Things looked better on Sunday, but there is soooo much to improve! The lights in the stalls are extremely poor, so you can hardly see anything and the layout of the market is just odd and doesn’t give the slightest bit of Christmas atmosphere. So, what is my recommendation? Oddly, I suggest that you go to the market, accept the imperfection and look forward to next year’s market. I say that because if people stayed away it would be a pity and would not give this market a proper chance. Often it takes a project like that 2-3 years until it gets good. So support the market with your visit. It is in Fitzwilliam Square, the private square in Fitzwilliam Street, Dublin 2, not too far from Baggott Street or from Merrion Square. BRAZILIAN FOOD FESTIVAL – FUNDRAISER FOR ALINE BARROS
Please note: This is NOT a free event, instead it costs EUR 10. You might wonder why I mention it anyway and I can explain that easily. A few years ago, I met Aline Barros. Aline is Brazilian, but lives a good few years in Dublin. Initially she was studying English here and travelling to lots of places all over Europe and she was looking forward to a lot more travelling, but then an accident happened. While she was cycling to work in the morning, a truck caught her when he was overtaking her and pulled her underneath the truck. Aline broke her spine multiple times and is in a wheelchair after many operations and a long and very hard rehabilitation process.
She is a wonderful, positive and inspirational woman and her Brazilian friends are a huge support for her. This event on Sun 12 Dec (13:00-20:00) is a fundraising event for Aline who was not received any money for all the injuries because the truck driver continued driving after nearly killing Aline. A court case was meant to happen a few months ago, but I am not sure where it stands right now.
The fundraiser for Aline will take place in the Mezz Pub, 23 Eustace Street, Dublin 2, and there will me Samba Brazil dancers + Coisas de Preto + Forro with Fabino and Robinho + Baque Soul + live Dj Junior and more guests in addition you can enjoy brazilian foods: churrasco de picanha + beef, pork, chicken, typical dishes, feijoada, quiabada, bobo de camarao, vaca atolada, vinagrete, maionese, saladas, farofa, etc. I understand the EUR 10 includes everything and the money raised will go to Aline.

JIMMY BURNS – BOOK LAUNCH – INSTITUTO CERVANTES

In the 1930s Tom Burns (Jimmy’s father) was a rising star of British publishing. When war was declared, Burns joined the Ministry of Information, a propaganda wing of the secret services, and in 1940 he was sent to Madrid as press attaché to the British Embassy. COLD SNAP – NOT SNAPPY AT ALL!
Many TV and radio station presenters are still talking about the “Cold Snap”. Snap? “Snap” is something sudden and fast, not something that lasts for weeks. “Cold Snap” is a stupid term for our current weather. It is RELATIVELY cold at 0 degrees, but it certainly is no “Snap” and if anyone will mention that word again I will not be responsible for throwing something at the TV. :-D Interestingly Wikipedia suggests that “Cold Snap” stands for “in meteorology, a period of intensely cold and dry weather, often occurring during an Ice Age”.
