Hi all!

Last weekend was an interesting one for me. How would you feel if someone told you that you will have to be inside in a seminar room for more than 10 hours every day over the whole weekend and some more (from Friday until Tuesday) AND that you will even have to pay money for this pleasure? Yes, even in Irish spring, this is a prospect that would make many turn away. :-) But here is what might change it for some: How about if the training was hugely interesting, very exciting and successful and if it even had the potential to be life changing? Would you then consider it? Well, I can tell you for me, it was an amazing five days. All the studying beforehand has paid of and training and exam went well and I am now certified as NLP Practitioner and as Results Coach and additionally have certificates in Neurological Re-Patterning and Ericksonian Hypnosis. The hard work has paid off and the first step in an interesting new direction is made. I don’t plan to change my job, but I am happy to add new skills to my portfolio. :-) The good news is, that not even my close friends have to worry that I will feel compelled to “therapise” everything that moves. However, if you are interested in what this is all about and if you want to deal with things that hold you back or need some help in setting and achieving the goals you should reach, let me know. I will happily tell you more.

Many of you like the motivational messages I often include here. (Maybe I should add a separate section with uplifting news in these times? :-) ) Today I have a story that some might already now, but it is still nice and relevant:

In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock.
Some of the king’s wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the king for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded.
After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse laying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the king indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway.
We all have choices of how to deal with the boulders in our life and if we make the effort to move them out of the way, we will find the treasure that lies underneath. So, use the obstacles as an opportunity to improve your path into the future and face and remove the boulders from your life.

Thanks to Colette H who spread the news about this newsletter to all her colleagues and had huge success with it! You can help too by letting more people at work or in your gym or college/university know. Just print this PDF file www.broighter.com/EventGuide_NewSubscribers.pdf and if you know any space where people pass by on a regular basis (any blackboard, university hall, Dart Station, Bus Station etc) you hang it up at a good spot. If you even have a scissors to cut the contact labels at the bottom, it is a bonus! Spread the word and let people know about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) I will show my appreciation for your help by producing an as comprehensive as possible Dublin Event Guide for Free Events every week. ;-) Thanks! A big welcome to many employees of DDFH&B, who joined this week, it is great to have you with is now. :-)

A big thanks this week to the new sponsors Niamh niS and Gwen H I hugely appreciate your donations! ..and I hope many more people will join you. :-)

The main sponsor is www.kravmagaireland.com, the self-defence training centre for everyone, which provides 12-week or 2-day self-defence training courses for beginners.

I am grateful for all support, but YOUR support is NEEDED too! Going to free events saves you a LOT of money AND is good fun. True? ;-) But if you didn’t know about these free events you couldn’t go. True as well? In that case the question is what the value is of finding out about all the events. Do you agree that 1 Euro per month (which is just 25 cent per newsletter) is a very modest amount? It would be great if I could count on your 12 Euro per year!! Feel free to give more if you can, but please do seriously consider the 12 Euro.
To contribute you can transfer your donation directly to “Joerg Steegmueller, AIB, SortCode 93-36-78, AccountNo 03556043” or go donate using PayPal or your credit card by going “http ://tinyurl . com/68dmlq ” and just remove the three Spaces in the web address (I have to write it like this, otherwise Spam Checkers complain about the tinyurl address.)
Alternatively you can send a mail to me (dublineventguide@gmail.com) and we can arrange a different route for your donation. This Event Guide is a hobby and NOT a commercial enterprise, so I do need donations! But I spend more than 25 hours per week (for some people that is a half-day job!) on writing and researching it.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges or at least appear to be free unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no guarantee for correctness can be given.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

Since this newsletter is getting longer and longer with all the free events available, this section is meant to provide some help in picking and choosing the events I will or would go to. This is not the “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences, so if it helps you I am glad, but feel free to ignore this section completely! :-) All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

NEW ADVERTISEMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN EVENT GUIDE
If you want to let the Dublin Event Guide Community know about your products or services, you can do that now on a regular and repeated basis by advertising in the Event Guide. Here are my plans for this week:
This weekend is a little all over the place for me. I had some plans to leave Dublin behind for the weekend to enjoy the country, but then the plans were drastically changed on me. But on Sunday I will still be in Galway at least for a little while because two friends, Orla and Brian, are getting married (Congrats!). With all changed plans now, I might go to Bray to the Jazz festival on Saturday. Then on Sunday early morning I will drive to Galway and will come back again in the evening. If I were in Dublin, I would definitely try out he Craftymarket and the Black Market just to see what and how interesting they are. On Monday I might go to the Kart City Sunday (and bank holiday) market. The weekend is not the busiest as far as events are concerned, but there is still a steady “supply” of free things to do. Enjoy!

______Competition______________

CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOPS – IRISH WRITERS’ CENTRE
Last chance to enter this competition, the deadline is this afternoon at 17:00:
After some turbulent times, the Irish Writers’s Centre is back and doing what they do best: Providing help and support to Irish Writers. In the past, the Writers’ Centre made some brilliant competition prizes available to the Dublin Event Guide Community and I am very pleased to tell you that their support for the Dublin Event Guide continues.
The Irish Writers’ Centre is widely regarded as the leading provider of creative writing courses in Ireland. And starting at the end of April and the beginning of May, the Centre provides a wide range of courses for writers at all levels and stages of development (aspiring, emerging and mid-career) facilitated by experienced creative writing tutors and high-profile writers.
“The late Spring and Summer Creative Writing Program offers a wide variety of courses. These include day and evening courses in Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Creative Writing commencing after Easter. Upcoming specialist courses in poetry will include those given by Mary O’Donnell, Jean O’Brien and Mark Granier. Conor Kostick is offering a course on ‘Finishing Your Book’; Greg Baxter on ‘Memoir and Personal Essay’ and Gavin Kostick on ‘The Art of Dramatic Writing’.”
Full details of all courses are available on www.writerscentre.ie To book a place on a course please contact the Irish Writers’ Centre as soon as possible on 01 872 1302 or at courses@writerscentre.ie. If you are a writer or are an aspiring writer you should definitely consider the interesting course offering and if you know a writer that might be interested, please let them know.
Now, after this introduction I am sure you wonder what the competition is about this time and I have to say that the prize for this competition is absolutely amazing: The Irish Writers’ Centre is making TWO Creative Writing Courses available for this competition!! This means that the two winners will be able to take part in a Creative Writing Course of their choice and this has a value of EUR 200 per person!!
So, what do you have to do to be in with a chance to win? I thought about asking you to work a little ;-) for the prize, but decided for this in the end: All you have to do is to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with WRITERS’ CENTRE in the subject and your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. The draw will be a random draw as always, BUT if you wish – and it is not an obligation and won’t influence your chance to win – you could tell me why you would like to win the prize. I will “anonymise” your comments and will make them (without your name) available to Ian Oliver from the Irish Writers’ Centre to show him that the Dublin Event Guide Community is definitely a worthy bunch for Irish Writers’ Centre prizes! ;-)
Please note: Your entry has to be with my by 17:00 on Fri 01 May 2009.

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. DEAD ZOO AT LARGE
Sadly the Natural Museum in Kildare Street, a fascinating museum!, has now been closed for a number of years first after the collapse of a staircase and then for some renovation works. I am not sure, but have doubts that this work had been carried out and I am not sure if it will ever open again. To show at least some of the content, a Natural Museum exhibition is now in the National Museum, Collins Barracks. The topic is “The Dead Zoo At Large – Treasures of the Natural History Museum” and the exhibition will open today.

BEALTAINE FESTIVAL 2009
From 01 May – 31 May the Bealtaine Festival 2009 will take place. “Bealtaine is the national arts festival celebrating creativity in older age. Join over 55,000 people all over the country, taking part in events involving music, art, dance, cinema, writing, theatre, heritage and more. Bealtaine is your chance to try something new, to share your talents or to come back to something you haven’t done for years. So come and join in the celebrations!” The festival is specifically for the “older” generation and while “older” is not clearly defined, it seems that the minimum suggested age is 55. The Dublin Event Guide Community has an average age that is somewhere in the 30s and – unfortunately – the information about the existence of this Event Guide is only slowly spreading amongst the slightly older age groups. I will therefore remind you of the Bealtaine Festival and only mention some National Museum and Hugh Lane Gallery events. There are lots more, have a look at bealtaine.com/node/93

BEALTAINE 2009 – NATIONAL MUSEUM
Bealtaine is the May-time arts festival celebrating creativity in older age. The theme for the festival in 2009 is ‘Go and open the door’ from the poem ‘The Door’ by Miroslav Holub. The National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts and History at Collins Barracks is partaking in the festival this year by asking the older members of our community to ‘open the door’ to the Museum through a series of talks, workshops and tours throughout the month of May.
The highlight of the festival at Collins Barracks is a performance of ‘The Wilder Wisdom of Auld Ones… Stories, Legends and Poetry inspired by the Cailleach’ performed by Actor and Storyteller Nuala Hayes and Harpist and Composer, Anne-Marie O’Farrell. This performance tells the stories of the Cailleach, the wise woman or hag of Irish Mythology which are full of mystery and the power, wisdom and imagination of older people. No booking is necessary for individual attendees but groups should make reservations through the bookings office.
* Saturday 2nd May

———Opportunities—————–

The current economic situation requires many of us to be a lot more flexible, innovative and to venture in new directions. No government can’t turn the ride around! They can balance the books – or at least try to, but the solution will not be found by the government. In my opinion only courageous individuals will be able to trigger the turn around. If you are one of the courageous people and have recently started a company – out of need or because you saw this great opportunity -, I am happy to help you! If you want, I will let the 3700+ readers of the Event Guide know about your new business and hopefully that will help you a bit. Let me know what you do and over the coming months I will regularly introduce a new company/project/venture/idea.
(Please note that this offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages, not for established companies/enterprises. If you are established and you want to reach the readers of this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) I will be happy to discuss the (very inexpensive) advertisement options with you. :-) )

If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know (dublineventguide@gmail.com).

NATIONAL SWAP PARTY
No, this is not an invitation to undermine the moral structure of the country! It is a CLOTHES, CD, porcelain, cutlery and anything else swap day! :-) Free up some space in your wardrobe and replace the things you don’t want anymore with funky new things. Have a look at the website and then pack your bags to go to a swap party! www.fashionevolution.info/swapit.html Thanks to Veronica C for reminding me of this event!

COLM TOBIN – EASONS BOOK SIGNING

The event is free, but booking is essential via irishaidcentre@dfa.ie or 01 854 6923 or barbara.wilson@dfa.ie. africaday.irishaid.org/celebrations-throughout-ireland/Dublin-Events.aspx Strangely another website specifies an age suitability of 4-10. If you have children younger than 8 years of age you should give the Irish Aid Centre a call and check if younger children are allowed as well. The workshops are from 10:30-11:30 and from 12:00-13:00.

FASHION EVOLUTION
“Change more than your clothes” is the motto of this event. Ireland’s annual ethical fashion week, FASHION EVOLUTION, will continue until 02 May. This year “Fashion Evolution” will re-dress current consumption patterns and habits and will call for Irish consumers and industry leaders to get active through swapping, knitting, skilling-up, talking and learning.
Fashion Evolution will host a series of public and industry events and workshops and while the majority of the events are not free, there are definitely some free events and I suggest that you have a good look at www.fashionevolution.info Some of the events are free but ticketed, so you better check the website.

From Fri 01 May until Mon 04 May the Bray Jazz Festival 2009 is taking place. Fri, Sat and Sun sees the main acts performing in Town Hall, Jazz Club, Mermaid Arts Centre and on a World Music Stage. CINCO DE MAYO
Someone (and that is slightly dodgy) is inviting all Mexicans and everybody else to a Cinco De Mayo celebration. They explain that only 100 people will be allowed in and you will have to send a reply from within Gumtree to be considered. In my opinion it is not a good sign if an organiser can’t even give you an e-mail address or the VERY basics of a gig! But judge for yourself: www.gumtree.ie/dublin/68/37727768.html

REGULAR SATURDAY EVENTS

SUNDAY MARKET & CAR BOOT SALE
Via Twitter I came across blog by “dublinl” that contains some interesting event information. Dublinl mentions a Sunday Market & Car Boot Sale at Kart City
Old Airport Road, Santry, Dublin 9. The Kart City Weekend Market is open every Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday from 08:00-16:00 and from now until the end of May all car boot sellers can sell for free. The website of the market is sundaymarket.ie/ and dublinl’s blog is here: dublinfree.blogspot.com/2009/04/carboot-free-till-end-of-may.html

FARMLEIGH HOUSE FOOD MARKET
The Farmleigh House Food Market is nothing special anymore, there are sooo many Farmer’s Markets around that the only special thing about the Farmleigh House Market is the surrounding and the ability to go for a picnic on a sunny day in Phoenix Park or on the Farmleigh Estate. However, this aspect is definitely worth a go! A serious problem with the food market is the irregularity of it. You will have to check every time if that weekend is one of the few market weekend. The Sunday this week is such a market day and, just so that you can prepare yourself, the next few other days are listed as well. Upcoming Food Markets 2009:
Sunday 03 May, 07 June, 02 August, 03 August. The market times are always 10:00-17:15. www.farmleigh.ie/culturalevents/foodmarket/#d.en.1506

CRAFTYMARKET
First there was nothing and now the weekend markets and flea markets are appearing everywhere. The Dublin Flea Market, the flea market in the Church on Parnell Street and the Toe Jam Car Boot Sale in Bernard Shaw’s in Portobello were there first, then the Kart City Market (see above) arrived and now another Sunday market in the Food Co-Op in Newmarket Square, Dublin 8 will open its doors:
“Visit the Crafty Market, Newmarket Square, Dublin 8 this Sunday and the first Sunday of every month! 35 stalls full of handmade crafts and original artworks await you, in a great location – indoors, with a cafe and hot food stalls and free parking outside. Live music during the day from two talented singers, tarot card reading and face-painting for the kids make it a great day out for all the family! Drop your contact details in the box provided at the market and you will be in with a chance to win the two artworks on display – draw takes place at 16:30. The market opens at 11:00.” www.thecraftymarket.com

BLACK MARKET DUBLIN
And ANOTHER market!! :-O We are approaching market overload! On the surface, the Black Market seems to have a slightly different focus – which would be good – the initially intended focus seems to be to sell Artwork, but when you read on, then it still comes down again to more or less the usual things.
“On Sun 03 May, Seomra Spraoi will host the Black Market Dublin. A DIY Market Of Artwork, Books, Records And Oddities. The Seomra Spraoi social centre will be host to a collection of artists, sculptors, zine nerds, record collectors and purveyors of bric a brac and assorted oddities. All are welcome to come and spend a relaxing Sunday afternoon browsing the stalls and food and drinks will also be available, or indeed if you would like a stall of your own please contact us by email: ticabod@hotmail.com, or by phone, 0857103532. Seomra Spraoi is located at 10 Belvedere Place, just off Mountjoy Square and has a website at www.myspace.com/seomraspraoi.

______This is odd!!______________

Due to my training, I didn’t get a chance to look for odd things this week, but I am sure I can find something again next week. It’s an odd world, so often I just have to read a newspaper and already find a number of odd things. :-) If you have any odd stories to share, let me know!

—————–
Another Event Guide finished! Hurray! Only two more to go until I have “produced” 100 issues. Not bad, ey? Maybe the Event Guide 100 will bring some surprises!? Not sure yet, if my plans come together in time for it, but I will do my best. ;-)

Have a good weekend!
