Event Guide 51: Battle for the Bay, Tango, Yoga, Children’s Art Workshop, Bloomsday, Classic Cars

Hi all!

Thanks a lot for all the nice wishes for my holidays. ;-) I had a great time back home in Germany (South-West, if you are wondering in general, 35km north of Karlsruhe, if you want to know exactly). 32 degrees! What a great weekend to warm myself up. BUT I did miss the Maritime Festival, so I wasn’t too sad when my few days off were over, after all the festivals and events and friends in Dublin are something that makes this city interesting and likeable, despite the 12-20 degrees colder climate!

The presents, birthday cards and telegrams for the anniversary of the Event Guide didn’t reach me for the 50th issue, so I guess you are waiting until the year is full with issue 52!? Only one more week, so don’t wait too long with your surprise party preparations! Hehehe. Hmmm, that just puts an idea in my head: On the 14 Feb we celebrated an alternative Valentines Day in the Dublin Event Guide Community when we met in the Porterhouse. It was great fun and 35 people came, which was a good turn out considering that many had “better” things to do ;-) or other obligations on that day. Are you interested in another Dublin Event Guide Community Meeting?? We could take the 1st Anniversary as an excuse (if we need one) and meet on Tues, 17 June!? What do you think about that? Let me know if you would be interested by sending a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com. It would just be a get together to meet people for a chat, no room reserved or event programme! Maybe again in the Porterhouse!? Or will that be too small? ;-) Tell me what you think of this idea and if you would come on the 17th to a city centre Pub for a Dublin Event Guide Community get-together?

Unfortunately I have to mention the word “Spam” again. :-( It seems that last week the annoying hotmail curse hit me again: Many hotmail users did not get the Event Guide, because caring and protective hotmail decided that my newsletter should be deleted BEFORE it arrives with you without telling you and didn’t even let it into the JUNK Folder. Unfortunately I can’t do anything about it. Hotmail doesn’t talk to people like me. If you have or had problems in the past keep an eye out for the weekly Event Guide, if it hasn’t arrived by lunchtime on a Friday, send me a mail (dublineventguide@gmail.com) and I will find a way to get it to you!

Next weekend is the weekend with the biggest, best and most important non-music event of the year: The Street Performance World Championship is taking place from the 13-15 June (www.spwc.ie). Make sure you don’t miss out, it will be brilliant again!! I will write more about it next week, but check the “Pre-Announcements” section at the end of this Event Guide for some important piece of information.

______Competition______________

BALLYMUN GOSPEL CHOIR CONCERT
The Ballymun Gospel Choir and Band will perform a fundraiser concert for the Simon Community, where they will sing a variety of contemporary uplifting songs and well-known Gospel songs that have been arranged specially for them. The concert will take place in St. Ann’s Church in Dawson Street, Dublin 2 on Sat 14 June at 20:00 and you have another chance to win a pair of tickets.
The concert wants to highlight the ongoing plight of homeless people and the vital work of the Dublin Simon Community. The Dublin Simon Community offers people a “continuum of care” throughout the stages of homelessness. It includes contacting rough sleepers on the streets through its rough sleeper team and soup run; emergency shelter; supported and transitional housing; resettlement; learning and development; alcohol and detox services; and the tenancy sustainment service.
The tickets for the concert cost EUR 10 and will be on sale on Sunday 08 June at the Gospel Choir Masses in Ballymun and Gardiner Street; also from the Slí Eile office in Gardiner St and at Simon Community shops. Unless sold out before, tickets will also be sold at the door of St Ann’s Church on the evening of the event. Support the Ballymun Gospel Choir and the Simon Community by going to this event.
If you would like to win the pair of tickets that the Ballymun Gospel Choir made available to me, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with “BGC” in the subject line. Your mail has to be with me on Thur 12 June at 13:00.
Like the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir, the Ballymun Gospel Choir is supported by the Jesuit your organisation Slí Eile (www.sli-eile.com). The musical director of the Ballymun Gospel Choir is Cathy Burke.

TANGO CLASSES
Yes, in the addition to the successful cooperation with Solo Flamenco and their generosity when it comes to ticket competitions, I can now tell you about another exciting dance style and again I got some tickets for you!
Natural Tango (naturaltango.blogspot.com/) are running Tango classes every Monday in Turk’s Head in Parliament Street, near Temple Bar. John Rownan and Erika Lerma, who both studied and practised Tango for many years and who were taught in Buenos Aires among other places are teaching Argentine Tango every week. The classes are 19:30-20:30 Beginners Class, 20:30-21:30 Intermediate-Advanced Class. After 21:30 a Tango Club will give you the chance to practise what you have learned with great music. The classes are drop-in classes and you don’t need a partner to participate. The cost for a class (Beginners or Intermediate/Advanced) PLUS entry to the Tango Club is EUR 10 and you don’t need to pre-book.
Oh, and maybe you can help: In order to ensure that organisers see how the ticket competitions here are helping with their events, it would be great if you could mention that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide” :-) if you pay for an event that you found out about here.
For the members of the Dublin Event Guide Community, John made TWO pairs of tickets available for the beginners class on Monday 16 June and to win a pair you only have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with “Tango 16” in the Subject Line. It couldn’t be easier. Your mail has to be with me before 12:00 on 14 June.

FLAMENCO – WORKSHOP
Sólo Flamenco (www.flamencoyalegria.net), who made an extra pair of tickets for their beginners workshop class available, had another successful Flamenco filled weekend. Check their website for ongoing courses! The winner of the additional pair of tickets was Emma Fontaineau (I hope that is the correct spelling!) Emma’s birthday was on the day she found out that she won the ticket, so HAPPY belated BIRTHDAY from all of us! :-)

ZAMBIA IMMERSION FUNDRAISING CONCERT
The concert series of the Student’s Union of the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM) had a highpoint with their fundraising concert yesterday and Marion Finnegan won the ticket for it.

LIGHTS, CAMERY, DYNAMITE – BOOK COMPETITION
The competition for the Liberties Press book “Lights, Camera, Dynamite: The Adventures of a Special Effects Director” by Gerry Johnston came to an end on Tuesday and the amount of entries I received was just amazing. Work commitments didn’t allow me to do the draw for this competition yet, so I will have to postpone the announcement of the winners to next week. Apologies! Find out more about the book here www.novenaltd.com/jsp/Liberties/book.jsp?prod=lightscamera

______Dublin News______________

On Thursday of this week the referendum about the Lisbon Treaty will be decided in Ireland. A lot has been said and written about it and a vast amount of poster is trying to frighten and worry us. I get the impression that the YES and the NO side are both not 100% genuine with their arguments, BUT nevertheless I think everybody who is allowed to vote should use that right and express his/her informed opinion. I am unfortunately not allowed to vote and the same applies to many many of you who all obligingly pay taxes and work hard to keep Ireland prosperous, but don’t have a right to participate in a decision that could have an impact on our jobs and on our lives in Ireland. The legal situation is like that and I am not arguing the point of who should have a right to vote and who shouldn’t BUT I am appealing to the readers who DO have a right to vote to use that right! So please, for all of us who are not allowed to, please cast your vote on Thursday if you are an Irish citizen.

Are you interested in a (paid) job or in volunteering with one of the many Irish non-profit organisations and charities? Or would you like to find out more about their activities? Activelink (www.activelink.ie) is an online network for Irish non profit organisations and provides information on seminars, events and general news relating to the Community and Voluntary sector in Ireland. In addition you can find information on Employment and Volunteering opportunities in the non profit sector and various Training Courses / Workshops on the website.

DUBLIN SOUL AWARDS
If in one of the charities OR anywhere else in your life there is someone that is investing time and efforts for the community over and above the norm, then you can nominate this person for the Dublin Soul Awards. The Soul Festival organisers tell us: “We’ve teamed up with Herald AM, Dublin City FM and Sunway.ie to launch the Dublin Soul Awards – a search for Dublin’s most outstanding soul…Do you know someone who regularly and selflessly gives up their time and invests their energy to help others, making a real difference in the local community? In recognition of our outstanding soul’s contribution to their community, they will be awarded a limited edition framed Soul Festival platinum record and a holiday to Lanzarote for 2 people in November with thanks to www.Sunway.ie.
Nominations May 12th – June 26th with the winner to be announced July 31st.
You can nominate here: www.dublincitysoulfestival.ie/index.php/What-s-On/What-s-On/Dublin-Soul-Awards.html

As a regular reader, you know that only free events or events where the organisers make some tickets available for you for a competition will be mentioned here. After all, this is the Dublin Event Guide (for _Free_ Events). However, for completeness, I will occasionally refer to festivals or larger events in this section where the sponsors “haven’t seen the light yet”. :-) With “seeing the light” I don’t mean that they are expected to provide all events for free! No, it is fully understandable that production cost often have to be recouped by selling tickets, but the Ulster Bank (as an example) does manage to do both at the events they sponsor: There is at least ONE entirely free event for the masses among many non-free events and I think they are a shiny example in this regard!
In coming weeks the Dublin Writers Festival (www.dublinwritersfestival.com; low-ish ticket prices, but unfortunately no free event), the Music in Great Irish Houses Festival (www.musicgreatirishhouses.com; the sponsor IIB is not yet as benevolent as the Ulster Bank) and the Taste of Dublin Festival (very high ticket prices) will unfortunately not be able to be listed in this Event Guide.

BLOOMSDAY 2008
Bloomsday marks the day in 1904 on which all the action of James Joyce’s novel Ulysses takes place. It is celebrated every year on 16th June by Joyceans all over the world. In Dublin, where the novel is set, Bloomsday celebrations go on for a week (09 June-16 June), with most of the attention on the day itself. It is traditional to dress up and go out for the day, visiting the locations of the book and taking part in readings, walks and convivial activities of all sorts which in some way connect with Ulysses, its author and its world. Many, but not all of the events are run by the James Joyce Centre at 35 North Great George’s Street, Dublin 1 and advance booking is advised for these. A good few events are not free and the full programme is on www.jamesjoyce.ie. I have picked the free events here for you.

STREET PERFORMANCE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP – BRAVOSHO
Last year the Street Performance World Championships started with the Jesters Ball in Dublin Castle, an evening of Street Performance snippets performed on a stage. The event was free but ticketed and thanks to Tania I was one of the lucky ticket holders. The event was brilliant and it was a great summary of all the top acts of the World Championship. The ticket process, however, was much too complicated and because it was a cold and a bit unfriendly evening, lots of seats stayed empty. To avoid these complications this year, the organisers have decided to run this event again, call it “The Bravosho” and to get rid of the ticketing. The downside is that it now has to be a “first-come-first-serve” and there could be a HUGE amount of interest. So if you want to go to The Bravosho (on Friday 13 June and on Saturday 14 June) you HAVE to be early and this is the reason why I already mention it this week! The doors open already at 18:00!!! So if Friday is the day you want to go, make sure that you are there as close to 18:00 as possible. Bring some food and some warm clothes! www.spwc.ie
_______________________________

I know it is passing Ireland without much impact and since England is completely uninterested as well, you will hardly hear anything about it at all, but for all of you who are not Irish or English ;-) , remember that the UEFA Euro 2008 Football Championship is starting tomorrow! I am not the biggest football fan, but I will certainly follow this event over the next three weeks.

Enjoy the weekend!

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that ticketed events have a better chance to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent to anybody who is interested for free and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
