Hi all!

Reverting to “normal” time last Sunday (instead of summer time) brought the dark evenings back with a bang. And with rain and clouds during the week, the outlook on the next few months appears bleak. It feels wrong to have to switch the light on at 15:00. So it was interesting to hear that a British initiative is underway to move the time in Britain forward by one hour for the whole year (means 1 hour in winter ahead of the current time and two hours ahead of GMT in summer). In essence Britain would adopt the Central European Time (CET) for a 3-year trial. Ireland and Portugal would then be the only countries on GMT and there is an argument for both countries to move to CET as well. Mornings would be darker, but we would have even longer evenings in the summer and it would get dark a little later in the winter. – Not the worst idea if you ask me! www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-15490249

With Halloween over, we now need to wait until the beginning of December for the next series of big events. A variety of Christmas Markets are coming our way and I have to admit that I am looking forward to them. What I am not a fan of, though, is the earlier and earlier start of “Christmas”. The Hilton Hotel at the Grand Canal (Charlemont Place) already has Christmas lights on and the madness will reach the Shopping Centres in no time. As usual Dundrum Town Centre is – unimpressively – leading the charge. MUCH too early, the have “Santa’s Arrival” on 10 November. NOVEMBER!!!!! Total madness!

This week, I will be busy again with different events that are not even listed in this “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. I will be at the seminar “Health Explosion” on Saturday, on Sunday I have rehearsals (we are getting ready for a week long gig in the Tivoli in February) and on Monday and Wednesday, I am teaching or training Krav Maga (self-defence) at And as soon as that is done it is Thursday again when I write the next Event Guide.

So YOU have to go to all these other events for me! ;-)

If I had the time I would go to the Sport & Fitness Show on Saturday or Sunday. On Sunday the Knowledge Exchange lecture in the Dublin Exchange sounds intriguing. Then in Monday the TIDI Trinity Development Research Week starts and has a number of interesting talks.

On Tuesday, the Milk&Cookies Stories event would interest me. On Wednesday there is a film screening about the meaning of water in the Science Gallery that sounds good. And Toni Reichental talks about his experience as a Holocaust Survivor AND the “1641 Depositions” a talk in the National Library sounds VERY interesting as well. On Thursday then, I would go to the Moo! gig in Whelan’s.

BUSY week again. No BIG events, but nevertheless a number of interesting small ones!

SEVILLANAS CLASSES – FLAMENCO EL INDALO
Flamenco El Indalo, an association that that aims to promote and enrich the culture of flamenco in Ireland through a programme of education and entertainment, regularly runs flamenco and sevillana classes. Sevillanas are a traditional folk dance from the south of Spain and Flamenco El Indalo teach it in a short set of three classes. HALLOWEEN IN THE NATIONAL LEPRECHAUN MUSEUM
The Leprechaun Museum in Jervis Street were inviting to DARK STORIES, their Halloween celebration. Dark nights at the National Leprechaun Museum filled with haunting stories from Ireland’s ancient festival of Samhain. Suitable for an adult only audience! In ancient Ireland, Halloween (originally Samhain) is the beginning of the new year, when the veil between our world and the otherworld of the sí (Irish fairies/spirits) is at its thinnest. A time of reckoning when debts are settled and spirits move among us. NANDO’S OPENS BIG RESTAURANT
I only tried out Nando’s last week. In September a restaurant opened opposite the Church Pub in Mary Street (extension of Henry Street). The food was delicious, the prices higher than expected (someone mentioned to me that the prices were still 2007 prices and he is right). Nevertheless, it is good news with all the closures of recent months. And Nando’s adds one more: Another Nando’s restaurant will open very soon (Wed 09 Nov), this time on the Southside near the Tourist Office in St Andrew Street. The new restaurant will be over two floors and will have space for 140 guests.
The restaurant chain was started in South Africa in 1987 and has no more than 850 restaurants in 34 countries worldwide! The signature dish is flame-grilled Portuguese Peri-Peri chicken with different degrees of hotness. IMMA MAIN BUILDING CLOSURE
The Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) in The Royal Hospital Kilmainham has announced that the main IMMA building will be closed from November 2011 until December 2012 (!!). Extensive refurbishing works seems to be required, but exhibitions will continue in adjacent buildings and the café, bookshop and grounds will also remain open to visitors. The Museum is scheduled to reopen in its full and renewed glory in January 2013. ADVENTUROUS LIVING – LIVING-IN GUARDIAN
Are you a rather adventurous tenant that is highly flexible, is not afraid of the darkness in a potentially BIG building, has a regular income and wants to live in very low-price accommodation? A new way of living is becoming available. A British company is looking for Living-in Guardians for otherwise empty properties in Ireland. I guess there are LOTS of them around (NAMA might know where they are) and for security (and possibly insurance) reasons, tenants are now invited to apply to live in houses, apartments or even commercial buildings. Gilles Perrin’s People of the sea is an exhibition of documentary photographs of the Irish Fishing industry. These large format black and white images often presented as diptychs and triptychs capture the lives of people working in maritime industries around the Cork coastline. Award winning photographer Seán Curtin captures celebrity chef Neven Maguire’s trip to Uganda to meet with families whose lives have been transformed thanks to the generosity of the people of Ireland. GOTHIC WALKING TOUR – HALLOWEEN FESTIVAL OF GOTHIC HORRORS
Fri 04 Nov: 14:30 – Meeting in Library Bar of Central Hotel
You might think that Halloween is over, but Dublin’s 2nd Halloween Festival of Gothic Horrors is still in full swing. Today a Gothic Walking Tour will take place. The ‘Gothic literary ramble’ is a literary walking tour of relevant landmarks around the city centre taking in the birthplace of Sheridan Le Fanu (just off Parnell Street), one of Bram Stoker’s family homes in Kildare Street, his workplace off Dame Street (in Dublin Castle) and other places of interest around town. Intending walkers (‘ramblers’) should assemble at the starting-point in the Library Bar of the Central Hotel on Exchequer Street in Dublin 2. There is no charge for joining this tour. It will be followed by a reading back at the hotel of extracts from Stoker’s famous ‘Dracula’ and, if time permits, a few paragraphs selected at random from Lawrence Durrell’s ‘Monsieuer, or The Prince of Darkness’ (first published in 1974). The festival will continue for another fortnight.

REGGAE MOVEMENT EXHIBITION – GREEN STREET GALLERY
Wed 09 Nov: Little Green Street Gallery, Little Green Street (off Capel Street), Dublin 1. – The Reggae Movement Exhibition on Tour will present “Soundsystem: From Jamaica to Europe 1950 -1995”. From 09-13 Nov from 10:30-18:00 (elsewhere I found: “12:00 until late”. Not sure which is correct.) every day you can learn about the history of the Soundsystem. In word, music and pictures, the exhibition follows the story of the soundsystem from Jamaica in the 1950s to the UK in the 60s and 70s, and then to Europe. The soundsystems gave birth to ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub, dancehall, hip-hop, jungle and drum and bass – and taught nations and generations how to dance. Jamaican artist Freestylee illustrates the story with additional artwork by Mau Mau. After opening in Berlin in September, and showing in Amsterdam in October, the Exhibition will be in Dublin for five days. Admission during the day is free. There are gigs and film screenings every evening from 19:00, but I wasn’t able to find out if they are free or not. TOMI REICHENTAL – HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR – RDS

In the RDS Speaker Series, the next events is with Holocaust Survivor Tomi Reichental. Born in Slovakia in 1935, Tomi was arrested and sent to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1944, when he was nine years old. Tomi, his mother, his brother, his aunt and his cousin survived the concentration camp. Thirty-five members of his family perished in the Holocaust. For over fifty years, Tomi did not speak about his experience during the Holocaust. He now speaks to students in schools, recounting his story and helping them to understand the human face of this tragic event of European and world history. 1641 DEPOSITIONS – NATIONAL LIBRARY

For centuries the 1641 Depositions (4000 witness accounts, 20,000 pages of sworn statements made by survivors after having experienced their terrors) lay hidden among the archives of Trinity College Dublin, almost illegible and worded in archaic language. Now, modern computer technology and on-line access to TCD’s history records have made them plain for all to see. They were sworn statements made by survivors of alleged attacks by Catholic Irish rebels against Protestant settlers, particularly in Ulster, during the 1641 Rebellion. BIG LIPS FOR CHRISTMAS!?
Did you know that lots of us want big lips for Christmas? No, I didn’t know that either and even more I wonder why anybody would want to have big lips. I get the idea behind beauty surgery and can see how enlarging or reducing certain part of ones anatomy can make a difference, but big lips? I didn’t realise that the ladies (or the guys) are so particular about lip sizes as this press release seems to suggest.

DAMN, WHO MOVED THAT CONTINENT?
On Broadsheet, the satirical online magazine, I found a funny picture that I have to share with you. CNN used a map to show where Cannes is (where the G20 summit is taking place at the moment). It seems that they possibly got the right spot, but then somebody pushed the map (or the continent) to the right and suddenly Cannes (France) ended up in the North of Spain.
