The exhibition “Field Test – Radical Adventures in Future Farming” (11 Mar – 05 Jun 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring how farming will look like in the future and what new developments will change farming so that we can deal with the global food challenges.

From Farm Cyborgs (for example a Virtual Reality environment for chicken so that they can think they are free range), via odd, unique and forward looking foods (e.g. insects for improving your protein intake); growth houses for your home; very different seeds (e.g. beans that taste like beef) to the “LOCI Food Lab” (outside near the entrance to the Science Gallery) where you can get a customised snack, the exhibition has a lot of interesting exhibits that revealing, intriguing or surprising.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, FIELD TEST is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that chilren from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!

Every Sunday, the National Botanic Gardens invite to two guided walks. The first one is at 12:00 and the second one at 14:30.

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June.

The Wings for Life World Run is a unique event. It is a run with no finish line. The run starts at the Newtownsmith Green in Dun Laoghaire (between Dun Laoghaire Harbour and Sandycove) and after a wait, a catcher care is “released”. As soon as the catcher car passes a participant, he/she will be eliminated and has to stop. The run will go to Bray, then the onwards to Greystones and then further towards Wicklow Town. The catcher car drives at a steady speed and eventually it will reach the first runner of the field who is then the winner.

Participation is not free, but your support for the runners either at the start area or along the course is appreciated.

100% of the entry fees goes to Spinal Cord Research and the event takes place on the same day in 34 places around the world.

A remarkable event at London’s National Gallery assembled the largest ever collection of Leonardo’s surviving paintings for a unique exhibition “Leonardo da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan”.

As part of the 1916-2016 Centenary Commemorations, a free tour will take at Arbour Hill Cemetery every Sunday at 14:00. (from March until end of October).

No booking necessary. The meeting point is at the 1916 Memorial Wall towards the back of the cemetery.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

Emily Gallagher will run a weekly “just for fun” photo trail where you get instructions to hunt for specific snaps around the city centre. Afterwards the symbolic significance to the snaps will be shared. The overall theme is “Get a glimpse of directions you may wish your life to take and discover decisions you may desire to make.”

The Irish Astronomical Society will set up telescopes in St. Stephen’s Green (near the bandstand) during the day on Monday, so that you can view the “Transit of Mercury”.

The transit or passage of a planet across the face of the Sun is a relatively rare occurrence and this will be the first transit of Mercury since 2006 (and the first from Ireland since 2003). Only transits of Mercury and Venus can be seen from Earth and there are approximately 13 transits of Mercury each century. Mercury will be a tiny spot crossing the solar disc between 12:12 and 19:41.

The telescopes at this event are all safe for solar observing, but do NOT look into the sun with or without telescope unless you have a solar filter.

A remarkable event at London’s National Gallery assembled the largest ever collection of Leonardo’s surviving paintings for a unique exhibition “Leonardo da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan”.

The film captures the excitement of the opening night occasion and provides a fascinating exploration of Leonardo’s great works. Art historian and broadcaster Tim Marlow explains the great masterpieces. An biography and reflections on Leonardo’s influence since his death 500 years ago is also included in the film.

The Irish Film Board present their collection of “After ’16” short films. After ’16 is commemorating and celebrating the centenary of the Easter Rising in 1916.

The nine short films that make up the collection are a creative response by Irish filmmakers to the 1916 events. The stories told are a mixture of live action drama, animation and documentary. The full list of films in the series can be found on the website below.

The Trinity Centre of Asian Studies is inviting to the lecture

“Extraordinary and Unaccountable Customs: British Observations on Population, Infanticide, and Footbinding in China”

by Professor John Carroll (Hong Kong University).

“From the mid-1700s through the late 1830s, Britons in China were confined to a tiny section of the city of Canton (Guangzhou). This encounter is known best for resulting in the Opium War (1839-42) and the “opening” of China. But it also generated a massive corpus of writings. Frustrated with the restrictions on trade and unable to live or travel elsewhere in China, these Britons devoted thousands of pages in journals, memoirs, and books trying to understand China, its people, and their culture. They discussed almost everything they saw, and speculated about much of what they could not see. This talk examines three interrelated aspects of this enterprise: determining the size of China’s massive population, the extent of infanticide and the origins and meanings of footbinding.”

There are many thousands of edible plant species in the world, but humans only eat about 200 of these. How did these plants become domesticated and why it is that some of them have virtually inedible ancestors?

The “Havana International Language Exchange” is taking place every Wed from 16:30-19:30 in Havana Tapas Bar in George’s Street. Flashback is an association of young Parisian students and they want to discuss and give artists and scientists the chance to speak on the subject of the need for a collective national memory.

In partnership with the Alliance Française Dublin, they have created this bicultural, multidisciplinary artistic festival. It will consist of four main parts: an exhibition by two young photographers from France and Ireland, a lecture on Art and Memory, the representation of an original French play “le Quai” and a Dance performance.

“The Love Letters of May and James: another side of 1916” is the title of the reading in Pearse Street Library.

May and James were the grandparents of Tessa Finn. Tessa reads from the letters her grandparents wrote to each other during 1916. The letters provide a private glimpse into the lives of two people growing in love, not involved in the conflict but touched by it in many ways. The letters were featured on the RTE programme, “16 Letters”, broadcast on Easter Sunday.

“Is it a siege, a riot, a revolt or a revolution? Perceptions of the 1916 Rising in the French Press” is a talk with Professor Grace Neville.

“This presentation will analyse representations of the 1916 Rising across the French press, from broadsheets (including Le Figaro, Le Temps and L’Humanité, read by decision-makers) to the popular press (such as Le Miroir) with its heady mix of articles, drawings and photos. The French press, in general, struggled to understand the Rising, a difficulty exacerbated by the fact that much of its reporting came at one remove, from London. A consensus emerged that the Rising was a German plot and it was deeply resented.”

“Eleven ironworkers eat their lunch whilst casually sitting on an iron beam – their feet dangling in the air high above New York, with Central Park and a foggy Manhattan in the depths below them. – Everybody knows the photograph “Lunch atop a Skyscraper,” taken during construction at the Rockefeller Center in 1932. But its background had remained a mystery: despite extensive research, neither the 11 men nor the photographer had been definitively identified. When Director Seán Ó Cualáin stumbled upon a copy of the picture in a pub in a small Irish hamlet, with a note that two of the men came from that village, he decided to delve into the history of the photo.”

The Goethe-Institut Irland in co-operation with the National Gallery presents Werner Krüger’s film portrait of German Sculptor and Performance Artist Joseph Beuys “Everyone is an Artist / Jeder Mensch ist ein Künstler” from 1979. Flashback is an association of young Parisian students and they want to discuss and give artists and scientists the chance to speak on the subject of the need for a collective national memory.

In partnership with the Alliance Française Dublin, they have created this bicultural, multidisciplinary artistic festival. It will consist of four main parts: an exhibition by two young photographers from France and Ireland, a lecture on Art and Memory, the representation of an original French play “le Quai” and a Dance performance.

The Dublin County Fleadh Cheoil will take place in Dalkey, Co. Dublin from 10-15 May 2016 and there are four main events and a Session Trail from 11-14 May from 21:00 in pubs of Dalkey (Wed: The Magpie, Thur: Finnegans, Fri: The Club, Sat: The King’s Inn and Sat+Sun afternoon: The Tramyard Gig Rig).

The one free concert of the four main events is “Requiem 1916”, a newly composed requiem for orchestra, choir and sean-nós, composed by Odhrán Ó Casaide. It will be performed at 20:00 in the Church of Assumption in Dalkey.

Every Thursday a Singer Songwriter Night will take place in Mother Reilly’s in Rathmines. This is YOUR chance to show everyone what you can do, alternatively you can just listen to the talented Singer/Songwriters. Admission is free.

A Fun Pub Quiz takes place in Brady’s in Terenure on Thurs. The quiz will be on every Thursday night in the Lounge at Brady’s. Keith McLoughlin is the Quiz Master.

Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.

YOUtopia by Outlandish Theatre (OT) Platform is a startling new play that has been developed in the heart of four communities undergoing regeneration that explores the urgent housing crisis in Dublin and nationwide.

The performance in the Abbey Theatre on Friday will be followed by a panel discussion focussing on on “thoughts on solving the housing crisis beyond the desire to protest”, speakers include Prof. Chris Fitzpatrick (St Teresa’s Gardens Regeneration Board) and Sam McGuinness (CEO Dublin Simon).

The Battle of the Somme and the battle for control over Ypres were brutal and unrelentless fights in the First World War and many Irish soldiers who had joined the British Army died there.

Piet Chielens was born and lived near Ypres Salient and in his home village he grew up with the cemeteries and stories of that war. Since 1996 he has been co-director of the “In Flanders Fields Museum” in Ypres (Ieper), where he is director of exhibitions and public programming. He instigated the construction of a monument to mark the spot where the Irish poet Francis Ledwidge was killed by a shell in 1917: a monument jointly unveiled in 1998 by the poet Dermot Bolger and the poet’s nephew, Joseph Ledwidge.

At this event Piet Chielens and Dermot Bolger discuss the journeys of the young Irish soldiers which started in Collins Barracks and ended at the Somme or in the mud of Ypres and how they are remembered today.

The Hungarian Culture Days take place from Fri 13 – Sun 15 May and Friday is the “Day of the Hungaricum & the Night of the Myths” with three talks about Hungarian Mythology, including a storytelling from Candlelight Tales.

Ciara Ryan-Gerhardt is an Irish poet and writer with a deep love of the natural world. ‘Integra’ explores home, place and travel as inner and outer experiences. The launch takes place on Friday.

The Dublin Sidewalk Astronomers meet at the Martello Tower car park in Sandymount for a public star-gazing. Members bring along their telescopes and share the wonders of the night-sky with you. Admission is free.
