Hi all!

Easter is gone and (nearly) forgotten, but the good times continue, as far as events are concerned.

[ad]

This week there are more than 180 events and when I reach 200, I will have to consider dropping less important events, it won’t be long until we get there and I am not looking forward to having to make a pre-selection but it is unavoidable. If you want to have an influence on it, drop me a mail and let me know which events are of lesser significance to you. Or alternatively just tell me how much you like the Dublin Event Guide: dublineventguide@gmail.com

Make sure that you consider going to the Science Gallery this weekend, on Sunday evening the Fail Better exhibition will close forever! This week’s main event is the Dublin Bay Prawn Festival in Howth, but there are so many other great events too, that you have a big choice. Enjoy Dublin in Spring Time!

More than EUR 1000 in free “taxi” trips with Uber was claimed already by some of you. But if you did not get your EUR 25 inroductory bonus, get it now in the Dublin News section. It will probably be the last week that I can offer this generous promotion.

And here are two very important appeals:

The sending of the weekly e-mail newsletter costs EUR 170 per month and for this I need your help. If four wonderful people can be found per week, then we usually make it exactly to that amount. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some corporate sponsors. Maybe two or three companies that are prepared to help with a little more than the individual donations of around 12 Euro. If you know anybody, send them my way. :-)

And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 20,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 45,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

I found a link to a video clip that I just HAVE to share with you in the Feel Good Slot today. It is an advertisement from Thailand, but it is really nice and well done.It is about a nice guy, a caring person, an unsung hero and it asks why he does all these good deeds:

What could you do to create some happiness? Today? Next week?

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Roisin R, Clodagh H, Linda C and Laura B were so wonderful to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation that will benefit ALL of you! I really appreciate their help, and I would also appreciate YOUR help!

Every bit counts to ensure that you – and everyone else – will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week.

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

There are a good few interesting events taking place this week,

It starts with the Dublin Bay Prawn Festival in Howth. A great festival if the weather is nice and when you combine it with a walk in Howth. Unfortunately rain does have an impact: There is not that much to do if you need to look for cover. If you like Fireworks, there is one tonight, BUT double check the website or Facebook Page if the weather is dubious.

An Orchid Fair is taking place in the Botanic Gardens and a Summer Market will be in the Filmbase in Temple Bar.

The Swords Viking Festival might be for you if you have to entertain children. I don’t expect it to be as big as the really well organised Battle of Clontarf Festival last week, but that’s ok!

The Science Gallery exhibition “Fail Better” will close on Sunday, so if you still haven’t seen it, now is your very last chance before it closes forever.

The Soapbox Science Talks in TCD sound interesting and if I had the time, I would definitely go there.

That was all just Saturday!!! On Sunday there is a Guided Cycle from 09:30. The Orchid Fair takes place again and in Santry PhotoFest2014 should interest any serious photo enthusiast. Dublin Bay Prawn Festival and Viking Festival in Swords also continue for another day.

The Dublin Flea Market is always a nice event (especially if you are looking for indoors events due to weather) and the International Dance Day with lots of free classes is a must-go for all dance-fans.

This covers just two days and already there is such a long list of events!! This summer will get busy!!

I will leave it to you to look through the events for the week, otherwise I will write for another few hours here. :-)

Release Your Voice – 8-week Singing Course – Competition

This competition is over now and the winner has been drawn and notified, but there is some update from Joan and because many of you entered the competition and were interested in doing her Group Singing Classes, I want to tell you about it:

Her course officially started last week, but because of the Easter Holidays a number of people couldn’t start before next Tuesday (29 April) and because there is a bit more space in the room than anticipated, Joan has decided to let people that really want to take part start next week and to offer them a pro-rata reduction. So if you want to learn from Joan and enjoy her singing classes, you can now get a 7 week course for just EUR 75.

The course will take run from 18:15-19:30 at the Lantern Centre, 15 Synge Street, Dublin 8

Discover new and exciting possibilities for your voice while having fun and join these Group Singing Classes with Professional Singer and Vocal Coach Joan Shields.

You will learn how to develop and gain control over your voice; extend your pitch-range, improve your timbre, intonation and power; sing in a healthy way for your voice; communicate/interpret a song and perform with confidence.

The class is suitable for all levels of singer from the beginner/non-singer to the professional and for all styles e.g: Contemporary/ Pop/Rock/Jazz/ Classical/Traditional etc.

Joan is a very popular and experienced professional singer herself, has a Masters in Music Performance and will definitely be the right person to bring you to the next level of singing.

To book your place, contact freeyourvoice@outlook.com or ring 086 3844527 and here are some more details

Promote your product or (non-free) event through a competition!

If you want to reach more than 20,000 people with a product promotion or an event promotion for a non-free event, contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the options. In most cases there are no charges to you (apart from making some tickets or some of your products available for free).

And if you want me to do use your product and write an assessment here in the Dublin Event Guide, we can talk about that too. I like testing out gear. ;-)

Already more than 1000 Euro in free trips was claimed by Dublin Event Guide readers and this offer unfortunately will have to end soon, so look at this:

Dublin Event Guide Readers and their friends can get a free chauffeured trip to the value of EUR 25 !!

Uber, the American transportation company that is shaking up the hired car world has firmly arrived in Dublin and is offering their “Uber Black” service here. Uber Black is a chauffeured or private driver car service that is a big step up from your normal taxi service. It is certainly travelling in style and through the Uber app it is simple, secure, cashless and comfortable.

Everybody talks about Uber and now the company is giving every Dublin Event Guide reader a chance to try out the service. Every new user can easily get EUR 25 through this Dublin Event Guide offer so that you can give Uber a go. If your trip costs less than EUR 25 you just thank the driver and walk away. If the trip costs more, you only pay the difference.

To get your free chauffeured Uber trip, download the free Uber app (available in the app store), then register through the app and enter the Promo Code DUBEVENTGUIDE. That’s all! And instantly the EUR 25 will be on your account. And if you already have signed up, get your friends/housemates/partner who usually go out with you to sign-up as well so that your gang gets another EUR 25.

Alternatively you can just go to www.uber.com/go/DUBEVENTGUIDE and register there if you don’t want to download the app yet.

[The EUR 25 will be valid until 30 June 2014. The value can only be used for a single trip, so the whole EUR 25 will be used up even if the trip did cost less. This offer is only available for new users. Only when you use the Promo Code DUBEVENTGUIDE you will get the credit.]

Temple Bar in world’s 10 most disappointing locations list

The Irish Times and other media outlets reported it about 10 days ago: Temple Bar is – according to the Huffington Post – among the Top 10 of locations to avoid “at all cost”. Most of us fully understand the problem that is Temple Bar and many of us have a Love – Hate relationship with the area. I actually think that there are – just looking at a weekend day – at least five or six Temple Bars:

The first one is a wonderful family-friendly “Old Town” piece of Dublin until around 17:00. Then from 17:00-20:00 the hen weekenders, restaurant seekers and pub visitors are flooding the street. Busy and you experience a change in atmosphere. Then the 20:00-00:00 slot is the third phase, it is an increasingly messy time with the first few bits of hostility, shouting and drunkenness. Now it flips into the “Get out” phase from around 00:00-2:30 and after that it is just a war zone. Pubs are closed, security people left and the Gardai have abandoned the area.

It is not convenient to the pubs and bars in the area if anything negative is mentioned about it, but I think something should be done if we don’t want to let Temple Bar sink further.

Donating to the Dublin Event Guide for free!?

Do you happily receive the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) every week? And do you make use of it at least sometimes? And would you like to help to keep it going? If you read this, then the answer is probably three times YES!

But I understand that giving a donation is not everybody’s thing. I can assure you that it will only be used to cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide, but wouldn’t it be even neater if you could give money without having to use your own?

This is indeed possible! When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

www.bookdepository.com?a_aid=dubevg for Book Depository and
www.amazon.co.uk/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&linkCode=ur2&tag=dubeveguiforf-21 for Amazon

You can also copy these links and send them to your friends. When you click on the link you books cost exactly the same as if you went to the Amazon or Book Depository website directly. But if you go via my links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8%. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it still would amount to a fair amount.

And if you want to buy from
Groupon use this www.awin1.com/cread.php?s=344250&v=4345&q=162396&r=140544 or for
LivingSocial use this www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=4319&id=140544

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) Thanks!

Opportunities

This section is intended to feature new startup companies and projects. Opportunities that people saw and that they chose not to ignore. I am, however, experiencing a little technical problem with this section, so for now I won’t be able to use it. I will keep you posted.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Governors, Guardians, Artists – Exhibition

until 11 May

National Gallery of Ireland, Clare Street, Dublin 2

Founded in 1854 by an Act of Parliament, the National Gallery of Ireland’s first Board was established with seventeen governors and guardians. This governance included the President of the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA), which was considered the most important arts organisation in Ireland, and two artists nominated by the RHA, George Petrie and George Francis Mulvany. Since then, over fifty artists have served on the Board, contributing to, and supervising, the development of the institution and its collection.

Many of the artists nominated to the Board were active members of the Irish art community, sometimes holding positions of great influence. For example, Sean Keating was a senior teacher at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, President of the RHA and served on the Board of the Gallery for twenty-eight years.

“Governors, Guardians, Artists” highlights the work of a selection of those artists who served on the board, such as George Petrie, John Lavery, Nathaniel Hone, Sarah Purser, Jack B.Yeats, Evie Hone and Sean Keating.

On Tuesday 08 April at 10:30, Curator Donal Maguire will give an introduction to the exhibition. Gallery Lecture Theatre. Admission is free. www.nationalgallery.ie

Marcin Bialas Exhibition

24 Apr – 12 May (Opening 24 Apr: 18:00-21:00)

Centre for Creative Practices (CFCP), 15 Pembroke Street, Dublin 2

Marcin Bialas will present a collection of dark graphic artwork with a clear influence from architecture. His main interests are graphic arts (intaglio technique) and drawing.

Admission to exhibition and also to the Opening Reception are free.

www.cfcp.ie/events/701

Of Space and Place – Margo McNulty and Geraldine O’Reilly

11 April – 07 June (Mon-Fri 10:00-18:00, Sat: 10:00-17:00)

The LAB Gallery, Foley Street, Dublin 1

A curator did strike again:

“McNulty and O’Reilly share a common interest in subject matter derived from rural Ireland for this exhibition of prints and video. Exploring their mutual interest in history, memory and narrative in their work, their work is situated in the local. O’Reilly’s work draws on a residency at the Heinrich Boll House on Achill Island where she was struck in particular by the Deserted Village, abandoned since famine times. John F. Deane’s poem The Abandoned Village, and an excerpt from Eavan Boland’s essay Outside History, from the book, Object Lessions, appear alongside a series of photo etchings. McNulty’s work explores personal history revising her grandmother and great grandmothers house as the basis for her large scale lithographs that become microscopic portals to the past. The exhibition is accompanied by a specially commissioned essay by Prof Luke Gibbons.”

Fail Better – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 26 Apr

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

This is the second last day of the current Science Gallery exhibition. You have until 18:00 tomorrow to see Christopher Reeves wheelchair or the frightening Birth Machine. Use this last opportunity!

The current Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.

20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.

I visited the exhibition and I definitely recommend it. Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children. There is no overly complicated stuff, but most of the exhibits are not self-explanatory. But there is a strong reason for bringing your kids: We have in general a negative attitude to Failure. This exhibition will help you to change that!

Admission is free and opening hours are Tues-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Fail Better – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sun 27 Apr

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

This is the last day of the current Science Gallery exhibition. You have until 18:00 to see Christopher Reeves wheelchair or the frightening Birth Machine.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

18:00 – 19:00, Tue 29 Apr

Jury’s Inn Hotel, IFSC, Customs House Quay, Dublin 1

The panel discussion “Financial Services – Paying their way or having their way?” will take place.

Around the world people are campaigning for the introduction of a financial transaction tax (also called the Robin Hood Tax), believing that banks, hedge funds and the rest of the financial sector should pay their fair share of the global financial crisis.

In the EU 11 countries are currently preparing to introduce a financial transactions tax under a special procedure, but the Itish Government is not part of it. Germany, France, Greece and Spain will adopt the tax.

“Claiming our Future”, an Irish non-party-political civil society network that works for equality, environmental sustainability, participation, accountability and solidarity, wants to discuss the arguments for and against Ireland introducing the Financial Transaction Tax.

Dr. Micheál Collins (Nevin Economic Research Institute) and Brendan Bruen (Financial Services Ireland/IBEC) discuss the topic.

Admission is free, but registration via the website below is required.

Mobile Phones in Cars! – New BIG fines, but do they makes sense?

New BIG fines (1000 Euro and a court appearance) will come into effect on 01 May for people using the mobile phone while driving. But do they make sense?

If someone writes a text message while driving or fiddles with the phone or even holds the phone to the ear, they are so distracted by looking at the display and through one hand being completely occupied, that safe driving is nearly impossible. If you see an erratically driving car in front of you in 8 out of 10 cases the driver is on the phone holding the phone to the ear. In ALL those cases big penalties do make sense.

However, there should also be big penalties for reading a newspaper while driving, doing your make-up (!!!) while driving, eating your breakfast or lunch while driving. Oddly however, there are no specific rules for all these things. They are kind of covered under “driving with due care”, but it was felt that no special laws had to be put in place.

But back to the phones: A lot of people claim that a phone conversation is distracting and shouldn’t be allowed, but is it really that much different from talking to a passenger in the car?

The new laws make it quite complicated to understand what is allowed and what isn’t. It is absolutely forbidden to send or read a text message. But what about accepting a call and talking? If the phone is in a car kit or other holder and all you have to do is touch one button, are you allowed to do that? There are indications that you are NOT allowed.

So, if touching one button on your phone is soooooo distracting. Should we then stop people from changing the radio station? What about touching the switch of switching the lights on? Or pushing the lever for indicating? If touching a phone button is putting you in danger, then I guarantee you that using that indicator is at least as dangerous! (Taxi drivers seem to know that! They don’t use indicators! ;-) )

So, where does that leave us? Well, the laws seem to be overdone once again OR just not considering reality. And in the end, all the laws are useless without their enforcement! This weekend the Gardai might be out in force to stop people from using mobile phones, but in a few weeks time it is back to old.

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
