Another Bank Holiday weekend! That is certainly something to look forward to. The Dublin Event Guide is even later than in other weeks, because I had a number of significant delays in compiling it this week. I had to prioritise a few other things and that delayed me hopelessly.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
The next few weekends will be very busy, so get ready for it. There will be plenty of interesting free events and this weekend it all starts.
The main events this weekend are the Bray Jazz Festival, the Phizzfest in Phibsborough and Art in Action at Farmleigh Estate. All three go for all or most of the weekend.
I will definitely go to the Farmleigh Estate event. I was there in previous years and it was really good.
On Sunday there is also the Pure Vintage Market in the Food Co-op and there is a Craft Festival in Dun Laoghaire.
I won’t go through the events during the week here. I am late sending this newsletter this week and you have an additional day off work, so with these two things coming together, I will let you look through the list to see what is good and what you like.

Bealtaine Festival 2014
Every year in May, the Bealtaine Festival takes place. It was once a festival for the over 55 year olds. But has now been renamed to the festival “celebrating creativity as we age” without an age tag. Some think the removal of the age widens the appeal of the festival, others think it pushes the age up (because most 55 year olds wouldn’t see themselves as the “ageing population”.Either way, about 120,000 people will take part in Bealtaine. From dance to cinema, painting to theatre, Bealtaine showcases the talents and creativity of both first-time and professional older artists.

The Secret Garden Dublin – Meeting House Square
From 05-09 May Meeting House Square in Temple Bar will be transformed into a pop-up restaurant called “The Secret Garden Dublin”.
There will be food and wine on lawns in a vintage elegant set and with live acoustics. The pop-up restaurant will open each day for lunch at 12:00 and at 13:15 and lunch will be priced at EUR 10.
A taster menu for dinner is priced at just EUR 20. The 18:00 sitting is already booked out, but there are still some spaces for the 20:30 sitting.

A curator did strike again:
“McNulty and O’Reilly share a common interest in subject matter derived from rural Ireland for this exhibition of prints and video. Exploring their mutual interest in history, memory and narrative in their work, their work is situated in the local. O’Reilly’s work draws on a residency at the Heinrich Boll House on Achill Island where she was struck in particular by the Deserted Village, abandoned since famine times. John F. Deane’s poem The Abandoned Village, and an excerpt from Eavan Boland’s essay Outside History, from the book, Object Lessions, appear alongside a series of photo etchings. McNulty’s work explores personal history revising her grandmother and great grandmothers house as the basis for her large scale lithographs that become microscopic portals to the past. The exhibition is accompanied by a specially commissioned essay by Prof Luke Gibbons.”

The Bray Jazz Festival will take place this weekend with main Festival Days of Friday, Saturday and Sunday (02-04 May).

The Phibsborough Community & Arts Festival, called Phizzfest 2014, is taking place from Thurs 01 May until Monday 05 May. Lots of events will take place and many of them will be free.
There will be walking tours, poetry events, events for children and on Sunday a Community Fun Day at the Royal Canal (4th lock) including Duck Race will take place and there are also talks and Trad Music at The Hut at Doyle’s Corner.

Art in Action at Farmleigh

Art in Action is a unique arts and crafts festival at Farmleigh House & Estate that will take place over the May bank holiday weekend. 100 working artists will demonstrate their work and skills to you over the three day festival and they also invite you to participate in a number of art classes for both adults and children.
Art in Action is running for the last 17 years and up to 30,000 visitors will come to Farmleigh House over the long weekend. In addition to the art demonstrations and classes, there will be drama, dance, music and storytelling.
I have been at Art in Action last year and it is really a great event if you are interested in arts. I didn’t do any courses, but spent a great afternoon watching artists do their work, seeing some interesting painting and sculpture exhibitions and enjoying the garden party atmosphere. You will find me there this year again! :-)
Admission to the event is free.
For practical classes there is a fee of about EUR 8 to cover the cost of materials. Adults and children have separate classes, each under the guidance of an experienced artist. Classes last about an hour and are repeated throughout the day. Classes are booked on the day on a first-come first-served basis. In the classes you learn to make your first finished piece of art to take home.
The Farmleigh Food Market will also take place over the weekend from 10:00-17:00 every day (Sat, Sun + Mon).

“Aibítir – The Irish Alphabet in Botanical Art” by the Irish Society of Botanical Art is an exhibition from 02-25 May. Artists have created portraits of native plants accompanied by the first letter of their Irish name. Over 70 botanical artists, each with their own distinctive style, have participated in this project. This has resulted in the creation of three eighteen-letter Irish alphabets.
Free demonstrations in Botanical Art will take place during the exhibitio on Saturdays, Sundays in May and on Bank Holiday Monday (05 May).

Today is May Bank Holiday. Unlike in the rest of Europe, the May Bank Holiday doesn’t take place on 01 May, but instead it happens on the first Monday in May. The advantage is that it can never fall on a weekend!
As far as shops are concerned, you can assume that it is like any other Sunday. Meaning that virtually all shops are open. Pay & Display Parking enforcement is suspended, which means that you don’t have to pay in a Pay&Display parking space, but bus lanes loading bays and all other rules do NOT assume it is a Sunday, instead it is a Monday.
Some of the regular events on Sunday and on Monday might not take place because of the bank holiday. Where I knew it, I have removed the event in the listing, but I wasn’t able to check all events.

Art in Action at Farmleigh

Art in Action is a unique arts and crafts festival at Farmleigh House & Estate that will take place over the May bank holiday weekend. 100 working artists will demonstrate their work and skills to you over the three day festival and they also invite you to participate in a number of art classes for both adults and children.
Art in Action is running for the last 17 years and up to 30,000 visitors will come to Farmleigh House over the long weekend. In addition to the art demonstrations and classes, there will be drama, dance, music and storytelling.
I have been at Art in Action last year and it is really a great event if you are interested in arts. I didn’t do any courses, but spent a great afternoon watching artists do their work, seeing some interesting painting and sculpture exhibitions and enjoying the garden party atmosphere. You will find me there this year again! :-)
Admission to the event is free.
For practical classes there is a fee of about EUR 8 to cover the cost of materials. Adults and children have separate classes, each under the guidance of an experienced artist. Classes last about an hour and are repeated throughout the day. Classes are booked on the day on a first-come first-served basis. In the classes you learn to make your first finished piece of art to take home.
The Farmleigh Food Market will also take place over the weekend from 10:00-17:00 every day (Sat, Sun + Mon).

Aibítir – The Irish Alphabet in Botanical Art

“Aibítir – The Irish Alphabet in Botanical Art” by the Irish Society of Botanical Art is an exhibition from 02-25 May. Artists have created portraits of native plants accompanied by the first letter of their Irish name. Over 70 botanical artists, each with their own distinctive style, have participated in this project. This has resulted in the creation of three eighteen-letter Irish alphabets.
Free demonstrations in Botanical Art will take place during the exhibitio on Saturdays, Sundays in May and on Bank Holiday Monday (05 May).
“Be inspired… see how these beautiful pieces of art have been created. Watch the techniques and the skills used to depict our native plants. See how science and art merge in this fascinating art form. Members of the Irish Society of Botanical Art will give demonstrations in the Visitor Centre.”

After 100 years of extinction, the Golden Eagle Trust launched an ambitious reintroduction programme to bring 3 species of raptors back to Ireland. The plan was met with widespread public support, but also with poisonings, shootings, opposition and setbacks. After 15 years, have eagles finally returned to the Irish skies? And are they here to stay?
Ronan Hannigan, Chairman of the Golden Eagle Trust, will discuss the reintroductions he works on and how two of the species of Eagle and the Red Kite are returning to Ireland after a long absence.

The Phoenix Big Band is a 16 piece band playing songs of the 1930s, 1940s and other big band arrangements and they are playing every Tuesday in the Tara Tower Hotel (since 2012!) for adult dancing. If you like to waltz, cha cha or foxtrot, come and enjoy their performance.

Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. The Office of Public Works (OPW) wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therfore started this initiative in 2011.
Most OPW owned sites can already be visited for free, but the sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:

In the National Photographic Archive in Temple Bar, guest curator Mary Jones has drawn on the Mason and Poole collections of photographs to create the exhibition “Working Lives”. The images in the exhibition show men, women and children at work between 1893 and 1913. In this lecture, Mary Jones introduces the collection and discusses many of the images in the exhibition.
The lecture will take place in the Seminar Room in the main library building in Kildare Street.

“Our use of digital devices, software applications, and social media platforms continually generates immense streams of data, which are automatically captured, archived, and organized in ever-expanding proprietary databases. Often without our knowledge or explicit consent, these streams are aggregated into larger sets of ‘big data’ subjected to complex algorithmic analyses (“analytics”) in order to find relevant patterns and associations that can provide insight into consumer tastes, habits, and behavior. In this way user-generated data is valorized by selling relevant information to advertisers. On the other hand, users increasingly make active use of the data they generate, utilizing various applications (such as Klout) to gain insight into their online ‘performance’ and seek ways to improve their status or reputation.”

Jupiter Watch – Astronomy Event

Republic of Astronomy (Ireland) and Scopes and Space invite you to a Jupiter Watch event at the Papal Cross in Phoenix Park.
See the planets as you have never seen them before through some of the biggest telescopes. Speaker on the night will be Dave Grennan who is the only Irish man to have discovered three supernovae. Bring your friends and the kids too.
Admission is free (The event is weather dependent.)

Dermot Bolger and Barry McGovern have close links with the works of James Joyce, with Farmleigh and with Phibsborough.

Dublin Mountains Partnership – Guided Walks
10+11+17+18 May
There will be 4 guided walks in the Dublin Mountains in May. The walks are organised by the Dublin Mountain partnership and are all of varying difficulty. There are a number of training hikes from a 3hr hike to a 8.5 hour challenging hike.

Patient Information Leaflet trickier than IKEA furniture
Do you occasionally need medication from the pharmacy? Prescribed medication, maybe? Do you just take it or do you first study the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with it?
I ALWAYS read that leaflet first. I want to know that the tablets that I got to get rid of a heavy infection with headache and lots of other pains have as sideeffects EXACTLY the headache and lots of other pains listed as the original illness PLUS death (In rare cases! Phew!) and anything in between. But I will look at this another time.
Today, I Just want to focus on the Patient Information Leaflet.
Did you open it (easy!) and after reading did you want to put it back in the box only to realise that it only fits if you have it folded exactly the way it came, BUT that you have NO idea how they managed to fold it like that in the first place and that you will NEVER be able to put it back in the same way as it came?
What is it about Patient Information Leaflet folding systems? Having that leaflet in your hand and trying to fold it is like trying to put the most complicated piece of IKEA furniture together WITHOUT INSTRUCTIONS! Impossible!!!!
