Hi all!

Have a great Easter weekend!! The weather on Saturday and Sunday will be great and when it gets worse on Monday, we can at least look back to a full week without rain. Nice!

Enjoy the events that are taking place. Considering that bank holiday weekends are not the biggest event weekends, the 170 events this week are a surprisingly large number.

[ad]

If your last week wasn’t the best, look forward to the next one and take the weekend to clear your mind. I was sick for most of the week. I got a cold last week when I worked though the night and couldn’t shake it for the whole week. So, the Easter weekend will be my time for recovery. Looking forward to it! :-)

Did you see the Uber offer last week in the Dublin News? The offer will very soon disappear, so if you haven’t signed up yet do it as soon as possible or you lose EUR 25.

And here are two very important appeals:

The sending of the weekly e-mail newsletter costs EUR 170 per month and for this I need your help. If four wonderful people can be found per week, then we usually make it exactly to that amount. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some corporate sponsors. Maybe two or three companies that are prepared to help with a little more than the individual donations of around 12 Euro. If you know anybody, send them my way. :-)

And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 20,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 45,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

A short but quite deep saying is my “Feel Good Slot” suggestion today. I don’t know who said it, but it doesn’t really matter.

The only person you should try to be better than, is the person you were yesterday.

Sometimes we compare ourselves or our achievements with others, but the only thing that counts is that YOU keep striving for better in yourself. So be proud of yourself and get a little step better every day.

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation. There was just one donor last week who was burdened with keeping it all on her shoulders. Erinna B was the wonderful person! Your help is MUCH appreciated!

Every bit counts to ensure that you – and everyone else – will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week.

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Match.com Ireland
Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This week, it is quite easy to choose because this weekend there are only 2 or 3 main events. One of them is really big and the second one is sizeable too. The big one is the Clontarf Viking Festival in St. Anne’s Park. Sounds like a great event and I am definitely going there on Sunday. It is taking place on Saturday and Sunday.

The second event is the Famleigh House Easter Programme. the OPW who are in charge of Farmleigh always do a great job running events that are perfectly talored for children but also give the parents something to do. The Easter events in Farmleigh House take place on Sunday and Monday.

And as a warm up, there will be the Record Store Day. Not THAT big, but still a great amount of live music is created because of it. :-)

There are more events during the week and you should browse through the list, but remember, don’t read every event, there are too many (more than 165!) Just read the headline and if the headline interests you, THEN read the other information about the event.

“The Story of Swing” performed by the Swing Cats

Sat 19 April 2014 – 19:30
Button Factory, Curved Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

The Swing Cats were assembled in 2010 as a “Jumpin Swing Band” to move away from the Rat Pack crooning swing style and into the high-energy non-stop-dancing vibe as known from ball rooms in the USA in the 1930s and 40s. The Swing Cats developed a free style way of playing Swing with unpredictable arrangements to keep the music flowing for the high-energy swing dancers.

The band is a 6 piece with piano, drums, double bass, a two piece brass section, and a lead vocalist and they play a two hour non-stop set with minimal gaps between songs to keep the dance floor moving.

In addition to many songs from the 30s and 40s swing era, The Swing Cats are also performing modern songs from the 80s to today in the swing style from the 30s and 40s.

On Sat 19 April, The Swing Cats, together with Special Guest Ken Kirwan, would like to tell you the “Story of Swing” in the Button Factory. Tickets are EUR 19.50 (plus fees) and are available on ticketmaster.ie

For the Dublin Event Guide readers, The Swing Cats have made 2 pairs of tickets available and the winners are Lorena Lampedecchia and Mel Whelan. Congratulations!

Check out Ths Swing Cats here www.theswingcats.ie/ and here www.facebook.com/theswingcats

Donating to the Dublin Event Guide for free!?

Do you happily receive the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) every week? And do you make use of it at least sometimes? And would you like to help to keep it going? If you read this, then the answer is probably three times YES!

But I understand that giving a donation is not everybody’s thing. I can assure you that it will only be used to cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide, but wouldn’t it be even neater if you could give money without having to use your own?

This is indeed possible! When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

www.bookdepository.com?a_aid=dubevg for Book Depository and
www.amazon.co.uk/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&linkCode=ur2&tag=dubeveguiforf-21 for Amazon

You can also copy these links and send them to your friends. When you click on the link you books cost exactly the same as if you went to the Amazon or Book Depository website directly. But if you go via my links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8%. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it still would amount to a fair amount.

And if you want to buy from
Groupon use this www.awin1.com/cread.php?s=344250&v=4345&q=162396&r=140544 or for
LivingSocial use this www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=4319&id=140544

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) Thanks!

Opportunities

This section is intended to feature new startup companies and projects. Opportunities that people saw and that they chose not to ignore. I am, however, experiencing a little technical problem with this section, so for now I won’t be able to use it. I will keep you posted.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Governors, Guardians, Artists – Exhibition

until 11 May

National Gallery of Ireland, Clare Street, Dublin 2

Founded in 1854 by an Act of Parliament, the National Gallery of Ireland’s first Board was established with seventeen governors and guardians. This governance included the President of the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA), which was considered the most important arts organisation in Ireland, and two artists nominated by the RHA, George Petrie and George Francis Mulvany. Since then, over fifty artists have served on the Board, contributing to, and supervising, the development of the institution and its collection.

Many of the artists nominated to the Board were active members of the Irish art community, sometimes holding positions of great influence. For example, Sean Keating was a senior teacher at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, President of the RHA and served on the Board of the Gallery for twenty-eight years.

“Governors, Guardians, Artists” highlights the work of a selection of those artists who served on the board, such as George Petrie, John Lavery, Nathaniel Hone, Sarah Purser, Jack B.Yeats, Evie Hone and Sean Keating.

On Tuesday 08 April at 10:30, Curator Donal Maguire will give an introduction to the exhibition. Gallery Lecture Theatre. Admission is free. www.nationalgallery.ie

Dr. Colm Lennon, historian, author and artist will officially open the exhibition on Thursday 17th April at 7pm and there will be a special music performance by Ceoltoiri Cluain Tarbh.

To coincide with the exhibition, ‘This is how it’s done’, a lecture and series of art demonstrations will be held in the Norman Suite at Clontarf Castle from Friday 18th – Monday 21st April. Artist, Mary O’ Brien will give a lecture on ‘The Representation of Women in 20th Century Irish Art’ on Friday at 4pm and the demonstrations will take place on Saturday, Sunday and Monday at 11am and 3pm each day. Of Space and Place – Margo McNulty and Geraldine O’Reilly

11 April – 07 June (Mon-Fri 10:00-18:00, Sat: 10:00-17:00)

The LAB Gallery, Foley Street, Dublin 1

A curator did strike again:

“McNulty and O’Reilly share a common interest in subject matter derived from rural Ireland for this exhibition of prints and video. Exploring their mutual interest in history, memory and narrative in their work, their work is situated in the local. O’Reilly’s work draws on a residency at the Heinrich Boll House on Achill Island where she was struck in particular by the Deserted Village, abandoned since famine times. John F. Deane’s poem The Abandoned Village, and an excerpt from Eavan Boland’s essay Outside History, from the book, Object Lessions, appear alongside a series of photo etchings. McNulty’s work explores personal history revising her grandmother and great grandmothers house as the basis for her large scale lithographs that become microscopic portals to the past. The exhibition is accompanied by a specially commissioned essay by Prof Luke Gibbons.”

Inter/Generation – Architectural Fun Events

10:00, Sat 19 Apr

Dun Laoghaire (various locations)

Inter/Generation is a whole range of “free and fun architectural events for all ages”. The events will take place in Cabinteely Park and Killiney Hill Park between 12-26 April and are organised by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.

Lots of events are taking place in these two weeks and you should have a good look at the programme to see what events you would like. A well readable list is here: www.dlrgrainstore.ie/whats_on or you can download the brochure here www.dlrevents.ie/pdf/DL%20brochure%20Web%20version.pdf

“Inter/Generation asks people of all ages to think more about architecture’s role in forming and changing our built environment. Most of the activities will be located at the Grainstore, dlr’s Youth Arts Facility in Cabinteely Park.
There’ll be lots to do and see – from workshops suitable for children of all ages and their families, an exhibition, talks and architecture-themed films, to a specially designed Enclosed Garden just beside the Stable Yard Café.”

Fail Better – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 19 Apr

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.

20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.

I visited the exhibition and I definitely recommend it. Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children. There is no overly complicated stuff, but most of the exhibits are not self-explanatory. But there is a strong reason for bringing your kids: We have in general a negative attitude to Failure. This exhibition will help you to change that!

Admission is free and opening hours are Tues-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

1916 Easter Rising Commemoration

12:00, Sun 20 Apr

GPO, O’Connell Street, Dublin 1

The 1916 Easter Rising Commemoration is celebrated at Easter Sunday every year. It doesn’t make sense really, because we all know that Easter is literally a moving feast. The actual Easter Rising in 1916 took place on Easter Monday, which was 24 April 1916. So this year we are quite close to the actual date. Considering how significant the event is in Irish history, you would think the right thing would be to celebrate it on the correct date, no? Imagine you were born at Easter, would you then celebrate your birthday at Easter every year or rather on the correct date?

No matter what you think, this year the commemoration will take place on Easter Sunday again. It is an odd celebration all the important people are involved: The president, the Taoiseach and the Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence but apart from the reading of the Proclamation of independence, it is mainly a military parade, that seems totally out of date.

Let’s hope that the 100th anniversary in 2016 (on the random date of 27 March) will be more appropriate to the historical significance of the date.

If you want to attend the spectacle this year, you have to be in position (near the GPO) by 11:15 and then wait until 12:00. Video screens on either side of the GPO will show what is happening.

Trashed – Earth Day Film Screening

18:00, Tue 22 Apr

Lighthouse Cinema, Market Square, Smithfield Plaza, Dublin 7

Every year on 22 April, people in 190 countries take action for Earth Day, they plant trees, clean up their communities, contact their elected officials, and more.

The UCD Earth Institute invite to a special screening of the award winning film TRASHED narrated by Jeremy Irons, with a post screening discussion featuring special guests and academics.

“We buy it, we bury it, we burn it and then we ignore it. Does anyone think about what happens to all the trash we produce? In the latest Blenheim Films production Jeremy Irons sets out to discover the extent and effects of the global waste problem, as he travels around the world to beautiful destinations tainted by pollution. The beauty of our planet from space forms a violent contrast to the scenes of human detritus across the globe.”

Admission is free, but booking is required here.

Dublin Mountains Partnership – Guided Walks

12+13+19+21+27+27 April

There will be 6 (!!) guided walks in the Dublin Mountains in April. The walks are organised by the Dublin Mountain partnership and are all of varying difficulty. There are a number of training hikes, a 8.5 hour walk for the serious hikers, an easy hike for beginners and also a “public transport” hike with a circular route starting and ending near a DART station.

Have a look at the Dublin Mountain Partnership webpage for all details and make sure you register in time if you want to take part.
All details can be found on the website www.dublinmountains.ie/news/upcoming_events/?no_cache=1 All walks are free, but pre-registration is required.

Not free, but interesting nevertheless:

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

Irish Men ugliest in the world?

Let me start by saying that I am no expert in that area and therefore probably will write nonsense, but that shouldn’t stop me, right!? :-) But seriously, I am really no expert on male beauty an since I am not Irish either this issue has not much to do with me. But I still find it puzzling that year after year the website beautifulpeople.com declares that Irish men are at the bottom of the list.

Can it be that men of one nationality have a significantly higher proportion of “ugliness” than anyone else? Well, if you look a little further into the details, it seems that there are a number of nations at the bottom of the list. At least last year’s statistics mentioned that men from the UK and from Poland also were at the bottom of the beauty scale.

And what is that site anyway? Well it is a dating site for beautiful people. So only if you are “beautiful” you will et accepted. So the stats are not taken from random samples but only among the people that have declared themselves beautiful. That is quite relevant. Because now it looks like this: Ireland (and possibly UK and Poland) has the highest proportion of men who overestimate their level of beauty. That’s a COMPLETELY different story.

And if you are male and Irish, feel free to interpret it this way: Ireland has the highest proportion of confident men, who are happy in their own skin no matter how others judge their looks. ;-)

Some might think the last sentence is pushing it a little, but without a doubt the men signed up on that website will agree with me. :-P

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
