Hi all!

Last weekend’s events were outstanding! “Reciting the Rising” on Easter Monday was a huge success and RTE deserves a lot of praise for organising such a great event that got hundreds of thousands of people into the City Centre. Dublin was buzzing and I’d say everybody who came enjoyed it. The Military Parade on Easter Sunday was also visited by many, but I didn’t hear anybody say “Wow, these marching soldiers and the driving Military trucks, that was fun!”. ;-)
The Easter Rising celebrations are not yet over because the REAL anniversary is still another 3 weeks away, but what is coming up will be a LOT smaller.

[ad]

Again I have to do a two-stage posting of this Dublin Event Guide this week. A early version is going out now on the website and on the smart phone app and when more events are added, the e-magazine will be updated on both platform and the final version will be sent by e-mail to all subscribers. The information in the brackets below will be changed to “final” when it is completed:

[This is the FINAL version of this week’s Dublin Event Guide.]

Thanks to last weeks 5 helpers and especially a big donation from Eamon S, the March bills are paid and a positive big dent was made into April bill. Only EUR 100 remain and there is a full month to find it. Thanks so much for all the help!

And here is my weekly appeal: Please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 64,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help? To get people to subscribe send them to www.dublineventguide.com.

————————–

More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 60,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s Feel Good Slot is a quote by Tim Fargo, American author and speaker. He said

Don’t envy what people have, emulate what they did to have it.

Study the people that have what you don’t have and then emulate what they did. Copy their strategies and approach they took and you will also achieve outstanding things.

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Eamon S, Tom McI, Marsha S, Aishling B and Ana R T were so wonderful to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This week there are more than 200 free events in this Dublin Event Guide, but there are no real headline events. It is not really surprising after the blow out that Easter Monday was. I think many event organisers are in re-group mode.

But while the weekend is a little quieter, during the week the Green Drinks Dublin happens on Tuesday and on Wednesday the next “First Wednesday” takes place with free admission to a number of Heritage sites that normally are not free.

And over the weekend, you could check out the Science Gallery exhibition if you haven’t seen it yet. or just go to one of the museums (Collins Barracks has a 1916 exhibition), especially if you haven’t been there for a while.

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | | Vodafone |
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Dublin: One City, One Book – Festival

Every April, the “Dublin; One City, One Book” Festival takes place. A book that is connected to Dublin is selected every year and we are all encouraged to read this book. This year, the chosen book is “Fallen” by Lia Mills, a historical fiction novel that is set during Easter Week of 1916 and tells the story of ordinary Dubliners that got caught up in the conflict. The book was published in 2014.

There will be more than 60 events including discussions, talks, author readings, music recitals. There will also be bus trips between Dublin and Belfast, because Belfast is joining Dublin for the first time to what becomes then “Two Cities, One Book”.

All events are listed here: www.dublinonecityonebook.ie/ and the full programme can be downloaded in PDF format by clicking on this link: www.dublinonecityonebook.ie/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Fallen-Programme.pdf

All free events will also be included in the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” between now and 30 April.

Dublin Event Guide App Problems

You might know that there is a Dublin Event Guide App for iOS, called “Dublin For Free” and you can find it in the Apple App Store. This app worked perfectly for the last 4 years, but it seems that the new version if iOS doesn’t like my app anymore and it now behaves in an odd/unintentional way under certain cirumstances.

Getting corrective work done on it is relatively costly and as a non-profit operation that just about covers the monthly cost, I am not sure yet, if I will be able to find a way to get it fixed.

However, you can do what the Android users are doing for the last four years already and that still works: Type m.dublineventguide.com in your browser and all works like a charm without the requirement for an app download.

If you have any other problems, let me know via dublineventguide@gmail.com

Spring Into Heritage – Events Programme – Dun Laoghaire Rathdown

The “Spring into Heritage 2016” programme, is a series of free guided tours over the next 10 weeks from 21 March until 29 May in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown. It is a great programme that gives you a chance to learn more about the history of this part of greater Dublin. The National Maritime Museum, the Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre and a 1916 Graves tour in Deansgrange Cemetery were added new this year and there are also tours of the Oratory on Library Road in Dun Laoghaire, Cabinteely House and Marlay House.

If you are interested in history/heritage, check it out! A brochure with the tours can be downloaded here.

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to give recommendations, tips & tricks on how to organise and run good events. Eventbrite is the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and their support is very much appreciated! All information in this section is supplied by Eventbrite.

== EVENTBRITE RECOMMENDS ==

In the next few weeks this section will be filled with information and help from Eventbrite that focuses on organisers of events. So if you are an event organiser for big or small events, watch this space!

And you can find lots of events at www.eventbrite.ie … or download the Eventbrite app to find events around you.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Glass House – Sound Installation

06-17 April (10:00-22:00)

Smithfield Square, Dublin 7

Glass House is a Sound Installation that responds to the Lighthouse Cinema Film Schedule and is by artist Sven Anderson.

It responds to films being screened in the Light House Cinema by amplifying subtle traces of their soundtracks outside of the cinema on Smithfield Square.

The sound emerges from two of the lighting braziers that tower over the square (located in front of the entrance to the cinema). The title of the piece goes back tp John Cage’s analogy of experimental music and glass architecture, where one does not see the surface (or hear the music) but instead somehow looks (or listens) through it.

www.musictown.ie/event/glasshouse/

Holger Hertiwg – German Expressionism

23 March – 29 April (Mon-Sun 10:00-16:30)

Rathfarnham Castle, Dublin 14

German Artist Holger Hertwig brings his Ireland-Series to Dublin in the exhibition called “German Expressionism”.

Admission to the exhibition is free. On the poster it says that the exhibitionis open from Wednesday until Sunday every week, but on the website the German Embassy suggests it is open 7 days a week. Maybe stick with the poster! ;-)

More details about the exhibition can be found here.

Visions of Skellig – Life on the Atlantic Edge

17 March – 03 April

National Botanic Gardens, Botanic Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9

This exhibition of photographs by Mark O’Callaghan will offer a new perspectives on the unique World Heritage Site of Skellig Michael, 12km off the Kerry coast. For centuries, the Skellig rocks have represented the ends of the earth and the extremes of human settlement and endurance. Though today the monastic cells and lighthouses stand empty, the rocks are teeming with bird and plant life amidst the ruins and isolation, and remain a magnetic presence on the horizon. While living and working as a guide on Skellig during the summer of 2014, Mark captured many rarely seen sights, magnificent sunsets and early morning shots.

Admission is free.

The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

First Wednesday – Free Entrance to OPW Heritage Sites

09:00, Wed 06 Apr

Various OPW locations in Dublin

Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. The Office of Public Works (OPW) wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therefore started this initiative in 2011.

Most OPW owned sites can already be visited for free, but the sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:
+ The Casino, Marino
+ Dublin Castle, State Apartments
+ Kilmainham Gaol
+ Rathfarnham Castle
+ Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange
+ Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow

As you can imagine, this event is very popular and therfore it is strongly recommended to arrive early at the venues.

At Kilmainham Gaol, at the Casino and in Newgrange and Glendalough the tickets are given out in the morning and once the day’s tickets are given out, you will not get access anymore. Dublin Castle provides continuous access for self-guided tours. You might have to wait in a queue a bit, but there is a good chance that you will get in soon-ish.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Butchering the Thee-shock! – Irish words in radio and TV.

What is wrong with radio and TV broadcasters in Ireland? Where did they learn the pronunciation of Irish words? I don’t speak Irish, but even I know that Thee-shock is NOT the way Taoiseach should be pronounced. Where is that “TH” coming from? I also know that Doyle is a surname (Mrs. Doyle from Father Ted comes to mind. ;-) ), but it is NOT the correct pronunciation for “Dail” (the Irish Parliament) and finally Fine Guayle is not the correct pronunciation for “Fine Gael”.

If a newsreader or radio or TV broadcaster can’t pronounce these relatively simple three words correctly, they should be sent to elocution classes or should be deported to the Gaeltacht until they areable for the most basic pronunciation.

Some might tell me that what I hear is the Dublin 4 way of speaking Irish and that the same people are even challenged by basic English pronunciation (Ross O’Carroll Kelly comes to mind and “Chorles” for “Charles”.) but the newsreaders I am referring to are from City Centre based radio stations. So this (weak) excuse can not be applied.

Have an event-full weekend and week,

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
