Hi all!

A Dublin Event Guide filled to the brim with free events again. There are a few interesting events taking place this week. Have a look and enjoy them.

[ad]

Great news on the Facebook front: In less than 2 weeks the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Group grew by 1000 Fans. But I need more Shares, Likes and Comments if we want to keep that Page vibrant. Facebook does brutally punish if there is not a high engagement rate. So if you sometimes look at that Page, please check it out more regularly and get engaged by liking, sharing or commenting. Thanks!

Not so great news on the donation front: Not a single person supported the Dublin Event Guide last week. You guys challenge me! ;-) If you can, please help with a donation. If you can’t, don’t worry, but enjoy the free events AND tell lots of friends about it.

Your support and help is needed and MUCH appreciated and here are my weekly appeals:

The sending of the weekly e-mail newsletter costs EUR 170 per month and for this I need your help. If four wonderful people can be found per week, then we usually make it exactly to that amount. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some corporate sponsors. Maybe two or three companies that are prepared to help with a little more than the individual donations of around 12 Euro. If you know anybody, send them my way. :-) Recently the donations dropped significantly. Maybe it is the bad times, but EUR 12 is just 2 pints and for the equivalent of 2 pints you get 52 issues full of information about free cultural events. That’s DEFINITELY worth 2 pints! Please…and Thanks! :-)

And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 22,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 50,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

This week the Feel Good Slot brings you not just one, but two quotes:

Don’t be ashamed of your story…it will inspire others!

By doing what you love, you inspire and awaken the heart of others.

The quotes seem to be about inspiring others, but let’s be honest: Inspiring others is only a positive side effect. The main message is in the other half or the sentence. And that says: Be who you are and do what you love because if you are genuine and follow your passion all is good and you might even send a positive message to others.

(I am not sure who said the quotes, where I found them, they were not attributed to anyone.)

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week nobody supported the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Ohh! If you could help, that would be great, I really really really appreciate all the help! Without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to here and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This week the highlights are
+ a Family Activity Weekend at Farmleigh House (on Sat+Sun). I wish I was a child! ;-)
+ the Dublin History Festival with lots of free talks (Sat+Sun) about all sorts of historical topics.
+ the Street Stories Festival around Smithfield mainly on Saturday.
+ the Sandymount Repair Cafe on Saturday. Such a great idea and I hope it will spread!
+ the Dublin Flea Market on Sunday (you will find me there this week :-) )
+ and on Wednesday is a First Wednesday again with free admission to all OPW sites. Check it out!

And don’t forget that the Oktoberfest is still on and also the Weather exhibition in the Science Gallery!

‘Jesus Versus Buddha’ is the title of Aidan Killian’s successful comedy show, which he will perform in the Sugar Club.

It’s brimming, chaotic, digressive and smart.” – Chortle. Aidan has investigated the lives of Jesus and Buddha, compares their essence and brings their words into today’s world. The show is described as “empowering, spiritual and hilarious” and it attracted teenagers to pensioners; Anarchists to church-goers who laughed throughout the sold out gigs at ‘The Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2014.’

At the show in the Sugar Club he will also have a secret special guest. It will be an Irish star of Comedy who was involved with Father Ted and The Savage.

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | O2 | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Positive Aging Week

The Positive Aging Week from 01-09 October is a nationwide event that is there to show the older generation that there are lots of great things that they can do in their spare time. Throughout Ireland a vast amount of events are organised and if you are an older person, check the full programme out on www.ageaction.ie/

The programme should be up by Monday at the latest and there is something in it for everyone. Events are typically free.

Positive Aging Week is a 9-day event, but if you are a subscriber to the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”, you know that great free events take place throughout the whole year. So if you are an older person and meet others, tell them about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Everyone is welcome to subscribe for free at www.dublineventguide.com

Do you have News about Dublin? Send them over! ;-)

Every week I try to include some news about Dublin here. During the week I take note of anything I come across, but some week’s I am too busy with other things or forget or can’t find anything. If you have any news about things happening in Dublin, send them to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will happily mention you if I use the news you send me. Thanks!

Unlimited E-Books from Amazon

It is not Dublin specific, but nevertheless very interesting for all book worms among you:

Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited, the all-you-can-eat offer for book readers, has been launched for the UK and Ireland. It offers unlimited access to 650,000 titles and thousands of audiobooks on Amazon for a flat monthly fee of approx. EUR 10 (GBP 7.99). Up to 10 books can be kept at the same time and you can keep the books as long as you like.

A Kindle is not required, you can also read the books on smartphones and on your computer with the Kindle app. Amazon are currently offering a 30-day free trial to give you a chance to try the service. You can find out more here.

Opportunities

This section is intended to feature new startup companies and projects. Opportunities that people saw and that they chose not to ignore. I am, however, experiencing a little technical problem with this section, so for now I won’t be able to use it. I will keep you posted.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Sculpture in Context

Thurs 04 Sept – Fri 17 Oct

National Botanic Gardens, Botanic Avenue, Glasnevin, Dublin 9

Sculpture in Context is a brilliant exhibition in the Botanic Gardens and it is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition.

Every year a panel of selectors chooses sculptures from established and from upcoming artists and they will then be expertly placed in the garden setting of the Botanic Gardens and it makes a visit to the Botanic Gardens even more interesting then at other times.

Admission is free and I strongly recommend Sculpture in Context!

The exhibition looks at the process of decision-making and complexities that follow. It reflects Ireland’s current situation both economic and social, focusing on its emigration levels and the decisions its youth are faced with taking.

Natura natura – Saidhbhín Gibson

26 Aug – 08 Nov

The Lab Gallery, Foley Street, Dublin 1

The Dublin City Council Arts Office is inviting to this exhibition of work by Saidhbhín Gibson developed in response to a temporary residency at The Natural History Museum. The class is donation based, but all proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin and the suggested donation for this very good cause is EUR 5.

Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

Oktoberfest 2014

12:00, Sat 27 Sep

George’s Dock, IFSC, Dublin 1

The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 18 Sept – 05 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbräu Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.

Opening hours are Mon-Thurs 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-00:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues because of the severe admission restrictions (quantity of people). Last year the queues already started at 17:30. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event. Pre-booking is possible, but check the cost.

Admission is free, but after 22:00 an odd wristband system kicks in whereby you have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 that gives you a EUR 5 food voucher (and 1 Euro goes to charity). Allegedly licensing rules force them to do that, but I never had to get a wristband in a pub to ensure that I have something to eat when I am there.

I get my yearly fix of Bavarian food at the Oktoberfest. The Schweinshaxn (pigs trotter) is a must for me, but just once a year. ;-)

Strange Weather – Science Gallery

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 27 Sep

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The Science Gallery Summer Exhibition “Strange Weather: Forecasts from te Future” has opened on 18 July and will run until 05 October.

The exhibition explores how we understand, adapt to and control the changing weather and shows also a lot educational and even quirky bits around weather: A Raindrop hovering in mid-air, a Tornado Diverter, a Cloud Collector, Weather Models, a machine making house shaped clouds and an archive of old events from around the world that were (or are) impacted by weather and of new events emerging because of weather.

There are 26 exhibits and – like all Science Gallery exhibitions -, it is a really interesting exhibition. Well worth a visit with the whole family.

You can even be a TV weather man/woman in a professional studio set-up! An interesting experience!
Here is me giving it a go: www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYQjHHfRdco …I know, I better not give up the day job. ;-)

The Science Gallery is open Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and on Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00. Admission is free.

This Sunday is the World Vegetarian Day and the Vegetarian Society of Ireland is inviting to the St. Andrews Research Centre for their event. There will be a large selection of pop up restaurants, cookery demos, talks and stalls. The list of speakers is here and a list of all participants is here.

Surprisingly the Vegetarian Society is not stating if the event is free or if there is an admission charge and it is odd that they don’t. But I would be shocked if there was an admission charge for this event.

Oktoberfest 2014

12:00, Sun 28 Sep

12:00 – 18:00, Sun 28 Sep

These are artists who work together with scientists to make extraordinary creations that may well change the world as we know it. From designer butterflies to plastic surgery as performance theatre, from rabbits that glow in the dark to seeing sound and sculpting data – in this talk author of Colliding Worlds, Arthur I. Miller will introduce this brave new world.”

“Censored” – Print Museum Talks

18:30, Thu 02 Oct

National Print Museum, Beggars Bush, Haddington Road, Dublin 4

‘Censored’ is a series of eight free evening lectures, running on the first Thursday of each month, from September 2014 to August 2015.

“The advent of printing in fifteenth-century Europe meant that texts, ideas, and opinions could be reproduced and diffused on an unprecedented scale. In response, most European countries established new institutions, laws and other mechanisms to censor the press. Ireland was no exception. This series will look at the ways in which the press was censored in Ireland from the arrival of printing in 1551 to the late twentieth century. Speakers will discuss literary, political and religious works that have been censored; consider the ways in which printers, booksellers and authors were reprimanded for publishing controversial texts and reflect on the various ways in which press regulation has changed over time.”

The next lecture is on Thursday and is entitled “‘Regulating the printed word and the tongue’: censorship in seventeenth century Ireland” with Dr Eamon Darcy (NUIM).

The next lectures will take place on 06 Nov and 04 Dec.

Admission is free to all lectures in this series.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

Bending iPhones – It’s a good thing!

I should start with declaring my position/opinion regarding Apple products in general. My career was heavily influenced by one specific Apple product a long long time ago, but since then I have not owned a single Apple product and do not plan to own one in the future either.

Decades ago, my second computer (the first one was a Sinclair Spectrum) was an Apple IIe. I learned programming with the Apple IIe and my decision to study Computer Science and Computer Engineering was big time influenced by how much I enjoyed programming in USC Pascal. If many of these words are totally meaningless to you, consider yourself lucky, because you are much younger! :-)

So, yes Apple was important in my life at some stage, but I never owned an iPod or an iPhone or an iPad or a Mac since then and will make sure that that stays that way for a whole range of reasons. So the opinion that follows this (long) intro is not coming from an Apple Fan Boy ;-).

Since the iPhone 6 has been launched media outlets and Facebook and Twitter users can’t stop talking about these allegedly bending iPhones. For some it is proof that Apple has messed up again (like with the maps some while ago or with some bugs in iOS8. For others it is just a hilarious story. Apple claims that only 6 or 9 phones went back to them that had been bend. This is number might be as much an understatement as the jokers overstate the problem.

But let’s briefly look at the circumstances: It has been reported that the phone bends if people have it in their back pocket and sit down on it. WHAT??? Sit on your phone? Leaving it in your back pocket when you sit down? Are people for real? This is a sophisticated electrical device that costs a whopping EUR 600+ (if you get it with a contract, you pay that money over time to your phone company and if you buy it SIM free you know what the price is!). Why would anybody leave a fragile electrical device for EUR 600 in a back pocket and then plant all their weight on it? Mad!!

The fact that the iPhone bends is actually really lucky! Because with that amount of physical stress it should really break and the fact that it bends is a good thing: It warns the user about the fragility of the device and he/she can still use the phone even when it is bend. And if you don’t want a bent phone it is soooo simple: Just stop that odd behaviour that some show and use your phone in the way an expensive high-tech item is meant to be used. Ohh, and if your phone bends because you had it in your back pocket, you deserve it! *shaking_my_head*

So that rant is over! ;-)
