Hi all!

After all these weeks of canvassing and debates, revelations and real or perceived scandals, we now have a new president in Ireland that most likely will only be with us for the next 7. I was hoping for a different winner, but it seems that Michael D Higgins won the election. I am sure he will do an ok job and while he might not overly impress us, the limited influence he will have means that hardly anything can go wrong.
[ad]
Now that the election is over, you will most likely hear and read about the “Budget” nonstop for the next 5 weeks until 06 December. One horror news will chase the next and the only way to escape, is to hide in a cave.

Speaking of horror, the main theme this week is obviously Halloween, an originally very Irish (celtic) festival, called Samhain, that was brought to the USA and then came back again with a vengeance. Lots of events are taking place for the kids and a number of pubs invite to Haloween themed parties, but I wasn’t able to find a good list of pubs that run free Halloween parties, so you might have to search a little. Or just check with your usual pub/club, there is a good chance that they would like to see you dressed up.

Next Saturday I will go to the Health Explosion event in Dublin that Gareth Stubbs and Jeroen Coenen are running. They asked me to advertise their events here and you can find the rough information here and more detail on their website. If you are interested, you can find out more about them directly on their website www.egoinvenio.com or you can contact me.

——
The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive! This week I will remind you of a saying that you might have heard before: “It is not about resources, it is about resourcefulness.” We all have excuses for when we don’t achieve our goals or perform at our best. We tell others that we don’t have enough time or enough money or are not smart or educated enough or that we are too old or too young. There are all resource limitations. Consistently successful people don’t worry about what they have or what they not have, they do their best with what is available to them. That is called resourcefulness. Think about it and drop me a line at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you want to find out more or if you are not fully clear on what I mean.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

This week Paul M and Louise F supported the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Without these donations you would not get a Dublin Event Guide. If you have never helped with a contribution, ask yourself if the Dublin Event Guide has helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about or if it even helped you to save money…and then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm

To join the list of the much appreciated and esteemed supporters of the Dublin Event Guide, go to www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm I appreciate ANY help. EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost.

To cover the cost for this Event Guide, I need about 4 donations every week and to improve the Event Guide, I need another bit more. – I am giving 25 hours every week for no pay, so that you get the Dublin Event Guide every week. I need you to help with just 25 cent per week or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!? If you have a company that would like to sponsor the Event Guide talk to me!

BTW: If you think that I make money from advertisement because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY, I get nothing and if you don’t click on the link here every time you want to purchases something, I don’t get anything either. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

The overriding events this week are Halloween events and they are not really my cup of tea, so I will take a week off. ;-) I will only go to few events. On Saturday you will find me at the Ideal Homes Exhibition and on Saturday evening I will go to the “Get Back – The Stories of the Beatles” gig in the Tivoli. I know it will be great.

“My” Gardiner Street Gospel Choir will not sing at the Gospel Mass this week on Sunday evening, but we will be back next week!

So, have a look this week what you find and I will try to give you some recommendations again next week.

______Competition______________

HALLOWEEN IN THE NATIONAL LEPRECHAUN MUSEUM
The Leprechaun Museum in Jervis Street is inviting you to DARK STORIES, their Halloween celebration. Dark nights at the National Leprechaun Museum are filled with haunting stories from Ireland’s ancient festival of Samhain. Suitable for an adult only audience! In ancient Ireland, Halloween (originally Samhain) is the beginning of the new year, when the veil between our world and the otherworld of the sí (Irish fairies/spirits) is at its thinnest. A time of reckoning when debts are settled and spirits move among us. Take a journey, if you dare, to the dark otherworld of Ireland… through time and space, light and dark, superstition and frightening reality. Through the stories that inspired a world-wide obsession with Halloween frights. Through an old city morgue, beside a disturbed cemetery.
The “Dark Stories” only run until 05 Nov, so you better hurry if you are interested, you find all details and can book on www.leprechaunmuseum.ie/to-celebrate-samhain/ Two people will be lucky and will be able to win tickets for the performance on Tues 01 Nov at 19:30! If you want to win this pair of tickets, you have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with SAMHAIN in the subject and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 14:00 on Monday 31 Oct!

BALDONNEL SINGERS IN CONCERT
The Baldonnel Singers from Dublin with special guest the Millennium Choir and Tenor Paul Linehan will perform in the St Mary’s Church of Ireland in Blessington (on the No 65 bus route from/to Dublin) in aid of KARE a charity organisation that provides services to people with intellectual disabilities and their families. The concert is n Fri 04 Nov at 20:00. Tickets are EUR 20 and are available from the Parish Centre, Cottage Garden in Blessington or from KARE Blessington on 045-891414. The Baldonnel Singers have made a pair of tickets available for a competition and if you would like to win the tickets send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with BALDONNEL in the subject and your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 15:00 on Tues 01 Nov.

BEATLES SHOW “GET BACK” – TIVOLI THEATRE
On Fri 28 + Sat 29 Oct the Beatles will be in Dublin! ..and if you have doubts that it will be the real thing, then you HAVE to go to this gig. :-) Obviously it is a Beatles Tribute Band that is performing the “Get Back Show” in the Tivoli Theatre in Francis Street, but you will be so impressed and it will sound totally like the real thing. I was at the most recent concert of the same guys in the Olympia Theatre and they are really great. The concert tells the story of the Beatles in songs and the two day run in October is a preview for a longer run that will start in late January. You have the opportunity to see it first! Tickets (EUR 29.50) are available on www.tivoli.ie/ttsite/Tivoli_Theatre/Beatles.html and more details can be found on www.getbackshow.com/
I was told that there are some tickets still available at the door. The event starts at 20:00. I ran a competition last week for five pairs of tickets and all winners have been notified. You know who you are. ;-)

JEANNY JOHNSTON HALLOWEEN FUN DAY
The Jeanie Johnston Tallship is hosting a Halloween fun day for children and families on the 31 October. There will be party games onboard, costume competitions and a story telling session. Sweets and drinks will be provided for all kids attending. Tickets can be bought or booked by phoning 01-4730111 or emailing info@jeaniejohnston.ie. More information can be found on our facebook page www.facebook/jeaniejohnstontallship. The ticket prices are EUR 5 per child (age irrelevant) or EUR 17.50 for a family of 4 children and any accompanying adults are free. The winners of the Dublin Event Guide competition are Brian Callaghan, Debra Farrell, Deirdre Gill, Tanya Hunter. www.jeaniejohnston.ie

JULYO’S “LiMEN” – PERFORMANCE & CD LAUNCH
On Saturday 29 Oct (22:00-23:30) a great event will take place in Bewley’s Theatre in Grafton Street: Julyo will perform music from his down-tempo / ambient release ‘LiMEN’ along with Italian saxophone player Antonello d’Orazio and Mauritian percussion player Khalile Vial. This event is a must for all the lovers of Ryuichi Sakamoto, Ludovico Einaudi, William Orbit and Vangelis.
The event is already sold out so you won’t be able to go to this one anymore. The winner of the competition have been notified and I will list them here next week. But check out Julyo’s bandcamp site where you can download 2 free tracks from the “LiMEN” album at limen.bandcamp.com/

______Dublin News______________

NEW DRINK DRIVING LIMITS
New drink driving limits come into effect today. Ireland was one of the last countries in the EU to hold on to the 80mg (per 100 ml blood) alcohol limit. Most Western European countries have reduced that years ago to 50mg and a good few Eastern European countries have a limit of just 20mg or a total ban. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drunk_driving_law_by_country#Europe)
The new rules specify that if caught with between 50mg and 80mg, the driver will get penalty points and a fine, but not a ban. Above 80mg penalty points, fine AND a ban will be the reward for drunken driving. For the first time learner and professional drivers will be subject to a lower limit (20mg) than other drivers. Interestingly, if you don’t have your license with you when stopped, the lower limit will automatically apply to you. www.rte.ie/news/2011/1026/drinkdriving.html

GRAND CANAL THEATER TO BE RENAMED
In a EUR 4.5 mio advertisement deal, the Grand Canal Theatre will be renamed next year and will get the silly name “Bord Gáis Energy Theatre”. I see the attraction of these sponsorship/advertisement deals for the Point Theatre (O2), the Lansdown Road Stadium (Aviva Stadium) and the Grand Canal Theatre (Bord Gais Energy Theatre), but one thing that is common to all these venues is that they all KEEP the old name because the new name is only temporarily (for the duration of the contract) overlaid. So the Point Theatre is still called the Point Theatre and will always stay the Point Theatre for many people. So it is up to you what you call the theatre. For me it will probably stay the “Grand Canal Theatre”. The deal with Bord Gais is only for 6 years, so we might as well stick with “Grand Canal Theatre”. ;-)

24 THE WEB – WEB DESIGN FOR CHARITIES
A great initiative is taking place this weekend in Dublin. 21 people (three teams of seven) will come together in an empty space in Barrow Street to work 24 hours on designing websites for charities. Nearly 40 charities applied to get their website re-done and I haven’t found out yet which charities were selected. It is a great idea to get expert volunteers to provide their skills and time for this and as you can imagine a number of supporters are needed to make this initiative viable. Have a look at 24theweb.com to find out more about the project.

NATIONAL NOVEL WRITING MONTH
November is National Novel Writing Month where participants begin writing on 01 Nov and have the goal to write a 50,000 word, (approximately 175 page) novel by 30 Nov. Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over painstaking craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved. www.nanowrimo.org/ www.writerscentre.ie/html/events/atthecentre.html

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 9000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

STRING MACHINE – CONCERT – PROJECT ARTS CENTRE
Fri 28 Oct: 20:00 – Project Arts Centre, East Essex St., Dublin 2
Co-ordinated by Eamonn Doyle & David Donohoe, String Machine is a collaborative music project which focuses on the composition, development and recording of new work. Celebrating 50 years in Ireland, the Goethe Institut in Dublin commissioned an Irish/German String Machine project. The project entailed the commissioning of new recorded works for solo stringed instruments by Donal Lunny (IRL bouzouki) and Leopold Hurt (GER Zither). These works were then used as sole source material for two recompositions by electronic artists, Eamonn Doyle/ David Donohoe (IRL) collobarating with Leopold Hurt and Stephan Mathieu (GER) with Donal Lunny.
The four new works are released on CD and form the basis for a night of collaborative improvisations between Lunny, Hurt, Mathieu and Doyle/Donohoe.

The catastrophes we are facing mean that these views are now starting to be taken seriously. The push behind progressive education is towards creativity. In previous years there was fireworks at the end of the event, but this years it is stated in big letters that there will be no fireworks. ______Next Week_______________

———Monday————————–

BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY
This is the last Bank Holiday before Christmas, so make the most of it. ;-) Nearly all shops are expected to be open, but keep in mind that the Dublin City Marathon takes place, so the City Centre is full with approx. 12,000 additional people and access to some streets is limited. Pay&Display rules are not enforced on a bank holiday, which means that you can park for free, but because of the Marathon it might be a good idea to leave the car at home.

DUBLIN MARATHON
The Dublin Marathon will take place on Mon 31 Oct. The start will take place at 10:00 at Fitzwilliam Square and the finish is at Merrion Square. From 12:00-17:00 people will arrive at the finish. So it is an all day event. Approx. 12,000 participants are expected and it is a big spectacle that engulfs the complete city. Surprisingly little additional entertainment is taking place. It is purely a marathon. However, you can cheer on the runners (or walkers) – and be glad that it is them enduring all that and not you! ;-) The course map and all the extensive traffic restrictions are listed here: dublinmarathon.ie/general_course.php and all other details can be found on dublinmarathon.ie/

The talk “Italy: Myths and Memories of Unification” by Professor Lucy Riall (Birkbeck College, Department of History, Classics and Archaeology, London)
will take place in TCD. “Italy celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. It has been a spectacular occasion, marked by official celebrations, publications and public events, but it has also provoked much soul-searching and criticism and led to a widespread perception that Italy is in some sense a failure, or in some way less of a nation than its European partners. What are the problems of the Italian nation and to what extent do these reflect difficulties with its ‘Risorgimento’ and unification, as is often claimed? Why is the past the subject of intense debate and disagreement in Italy? What myths of Italian nationalism remain 150 years later, and is Italy really that different from other European nations? Prof. Riall’s lecture will attempt to answer these questions.” www.iicdublino.esteri.it/IIC_Dublino/webform/SchedaEvento.aspx?id=384&citta=Dublino

“His research is focused on a specialized field of organic chemistry called total synthesis, which involves the creation of organic molecules from scratch in the laboratory. This process allows rare molecules found in nature to be made in great numbers for study or to serve as the basis for drugs. Or, completely new types of complex organic molecules can be made from simpler precursor molecules. A film screening of the movie “Luther” (Dir.: Eric Till, colour, 121 min., Germany 2002/03) will take place followed by a discussion.
Eric Till’s film tells the story of the church-sceptic theologian Martin Luther, who caused furor among the catholic leaders when spreading his theses. Excommunicated by Pope Leo X and outlawed by Emperor Karl V, Luther is being declared a heretic. He finds refuge with Friedrich der Weise on the Wartburg. In the meantime, his theses are becoming more and more popular among the ordinary people. This leads to an up-rising, which is neither what Luther wanted, nor does it have any chance to be successful. The ready for battle peasants are being brutally defeated by the sovereigns. Despite these set-backs the peaceful fight for Protestant Reformation continues for Luther. The film will be introduced by a short lecture and discussion about freedom and faith in modern societies led by Irish philosopher Dr. Dermot Moran, UCD.

PRIORY HALL – WHEN IS DANGEROUS REALLY DANGEROUS?
You probably have heard about the “scandal” around Priory Hall, a housing complex in Donaghmeade. It turns out that wooden walls were used and these have been declared a fire hazard (fire could spread very fast) and the moment a judge heard about it, he got all residents evacuated immediately. The residents are now all staying in hotels and Dublin City is paying for their hotel stay. The builder/developer was told that he has to fix the problems, but there are huge question marks over his financial ability to get it fixed. The whole thing is a mess! The people that bought apartments were never able to check the quality and had to rely on other people’s judgement. Bank valuations could have MAYBE discovered the problem, but I am not sure if a valuer can really assess the fire hazard in a building complex. He is focused on different aspects. The problem is probably more caused by architects and builders, who should have right from the beginning used the right materials. So, a big big mess with a clear victim but no clear guilty party.
However, when you analyse the whole story, there is a completely different VERY odd and baffling aspect:
I am not sure when the buildings were completed, but already in 2009 the fire risk was identified as a local councillor reports ( naoise.ie/?p=145). Some repairs happened, but nobody was evacuated and nobody made a fire engine (a very rare resource) stay on site around the clock. But as soon as the whole case came in front of a court and Judge Nicholas Kearns, people had to get out of their apartments IMMEDIATELY (www.rte.ie/news/2011/1014/prioryhall.html). What was suddenly different. Why did the Fire Service leave them in their apartments for 2 years without panic and now there was panic. And the same Judge ordered a fire engine to stay outside the building around the clock (www.independent.ie/national-news/council-funds-mcfeelys-fire-cover-2915303.html). Imagine we find (which is likely!) that more buildings in Ireland have similar problems. Where will we get all the fire engines to park next to there buildings. Ohh, and maybe we need a fire engine at every furniture shop as well because there is wood in it that could burn suddenly and damage the shop. VERY odd!

If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
