Hi all!

Welcome to the first edition of the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” in 2011. I hope you had a nice Christmas and a good start of the new year. This new year will be full of new opportunities and experiences for us all and I am really looking forward to it. Sure, there will be challenges as well, but life is about overcoming challenges, not about allowing them to stop you. Imagine what a challenge it was when you were born to leave this cosy, warm environment of the first 9 months of your life and to enter the hostile environment you were forced into on this fateful day. You weren’t happy! But you didn’t know yet how to give something a meaning. It was just a fact and you dealt with it without looking back and feeling sorry for yourself. Now a few years later we do things differently. We give experiences meaning and if the meaning that we have chosen is a negative one, we ponder over it, we regret, we feel sorry for ourselves. Oddly, if the meaning is positive, we are a LOT faster to forget the experience. – My challenge for you is to make 2011 the year in which you take control of the meanings and with that the year that has you in full control over your future. New Year’s Resolutions are sometimes an attempt of re-shaping our future, but soon after the 01 Jan they are gone out the window and leave us upset about ourselves. Not the best start. Make a change! Forget the New Year’s Resolutions of the past and set your GOALS in such a way that you WILL achieve them.

[ad]

Why am I talking about this here? For three reasons: 1) I am qualified as a Master Results Coach and have a lot of experience with people getting frustrated with their early failure regarding New Year’s Resolutions. 2) The Dublin Event Guide Community is not ONLY about free events, but sometimes positive living and the right attitude to life features in this newsletter as well…it just makes free events even more enjoyable, if you enjoy life! ;-) 3) After running a very successful Wealth Creation Mindset Seminar a few months ago, I am considering running a one-day seminar about Goals, to teach you the tricks of setting goals successfully. If at least 10 people are interested, I will run this seminar in the next few weeks, otherwise I will run it later this year. And to tell me if you are interested to learn how to set Goals correctly so that you will achieve them successfully just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject GOALS.

You get this newsletter for free every week and we are more than 7600 people in the Dublin Event Guide Community because I have learned how to set Goals and how to achieve them! :-) Help me achieving one of my goals for 2011 by telling all your friends about this Dublin Event Guide. They can subscribe by sending a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with subject SUBSCRIBE DEG.

AND you can join the more than 2700 people that LIKE the Dublin Event Guide on Facebook at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide You will get last minute updates and event reminders there.

Today’s Feel Good Slot will contain just a simple quote. But it is so powerful that you should spend some time thinking about it! I found it on Soul DJ and Dublin City Soul Festival Organiser Chris Maher’s Facebook Page where he posts inspirational quotes every day. Today he posted: “It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.” — Leonardo da Vinci.
Do you want to accomplish something? Will you take control of your life?

The new year started well for the Event Guide with donations from Barbara Q-B, Anto K and Maria F. The donated money to help me cover the cost of the Event Guide and therefore help keeping the Event Guide going. The beginning of the new year is the perfect opportunity to do that and you even have the option on www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm to set-up a yearly recurring donation of EUR 12, similar to a magazine subscription.

This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent. ;-) You can donate any amount you wish to help with or – as an option – you can now chose a yearly “subscription” on www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm whereby a 12 Euro donation will automatically be carried out every year.

You can donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer money to my bank, just drop me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

Taxback.com is offering a free 4 year tax refund assessment to all Dublin Event Guide Subscribers. If you answer “YES” to any of the questions below you could be looking at a nice lump sum from the Revenue Commissioners: Did you…
…work part-time or full-time? …pay your GP or dentist? …rent property in the last 4 years? …pay tuition fees? …pay bin charges? …been on maternity leave?

A few more events than last week, but we are still not back to the full amount of events. One event type that is available in copious amounts this week is movie and short screenings! :-) There are FOUR different film screening events on Tuesday alone!

The Art Exchange at Exchange Dublin on Sat sounds interesting, but my only bit of “artisticity” is singing and writing this Event Guide. I doubt that is a good exchange for a PROPER artist. So I might observe from a distance but give it a miss. A great event for all the artists among us!
On Sun the Polish WOSP Charity Concert sounds great, but I just don’t get where I should be at what time and since I can’t be in three places at the same time, I have a dilemma.
A free Tai Chi taster class on Monday and a free Yoga taster class next Friday is something for all the sporty or soon-to-be sporty people. On Tuesday you have the choice between 4 film screenings. On Wednesday the discussion about Ireland in 1916 interests me and the common history between Ireland & Congo that will be discussed on Thursday is very intriguing.

Such a multi-facetted array of events! ;-)

______Dublin News______________

PHANTOM FM – NEW NAME, NEW EVERYTHING!?
Irish Telecoms and Media Billionaire Denis O’Brien’s media company Communicorp has bought 30% of Phantom FM and will now move their offices, rename the company and make other big changes. Communicorp already owns Newstalk, TodayFM, Dublin’s 98 and Spin1038 in Ireland. Phantom FM, a 4-yeard old company, was a struggling radio station that focused on Rock Music.
In an odd development, Phantom FM will be renamed and will be KROQ or K-Roq very soon. The new name is a copy of the name of a “relatively well known” (I had never heard of it!?) Rock Radio Station from Los Angeles. I don’t see the sense in using the name of some radio station that most have never heard and therefore have no emotional or other affiliation with. And there is NO sense in using an American Radio call sign, which always comes with a “K” as the first letter for radio stations in the West of the USA (and “W” in the East). Interestingly, the new name is meant to help significantly to make Phantom FM financially successful.
The station will move to the Communicorp HQ in Digges Lane, not too far from South Great Georges Street and it is expected that the programme will be completely overhauled. A discussion about the name is taking place here: www.radiowavesforum.com/rw/showthread.php?t=22274 and Phantom’s website is www.phantomfm.com/

MERCER HOTEL CLOSED
The Mercer Hotel at the back of Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre got closed down in a surprising development. A notice in a window stated that the hotel would be closed from 20-30 Dec and would re-open on 30 Dec, but then another notice was put there that says that the hotel will remain closed for the foreseeable future and that the management was surprised about this development. The website www.mercerhotel.ie/ hasn’t been told yet that the hotel is closed! I can imagine that this news doesn’t affect many of you, but I usually wonder what was going on behind the scenes to come to that result.

BOTHERED AND BEWILDERED WITH LIFE?
Are you bothered, bewildered or just bogged down with life at the moment? – Mary Keating, MA, trained psychoanalytic psychotherapist, is available for appointments in Custom House Medical Centre, IFSC or at 20 Lower Baggot Street. Please phone 01-6776253 or 0868783086 or email mkeating@iol.ie for enquiries or to make an appointment. Her fees are appropriate to circumstances, so talk to her if you could do with some help and support. www.agalma.ie/therapists/mary-keating

HUGE VHI PREMIUM RISE
From 01 Feb the VHI will increase their charges AGAIN. This time between 15% and 45%. This is an outrageous increase and while last year 48,000 have left the VHI when they increased the premiums, this time it might even be more and I will be one of them! www.rte.ie/news/2011/0106/vhi.html Conor Pope from the Irish Times PriceWatch section has put the following recommendations together if you are a VHI member: www.irishtimes.com/blogs/pricewatch/2011/01/07/fight-the-power

UPC PRICE INCREASE
If you are a UPC TV or Broadband customer, your charges have been increased and you were not even told. Well hidden on their website, in the “About Us” section (www.upc.ie/about_us/pricenotice/) UPC are informing customers about a price increase from 04 Jan that seemingly will affect EVERY customer. By law you are allowed to cancel your contract within 30 days if the company changes the contract or charges, but UPC seems to assume that NOT telling people is the best approach and smartly they claim that the price change has been decided on 03 Dec, so that the 30 days are up on the day the price changes on 04 Jan. If you are unhappy with the change and want to leave UPC, you should contact ComReg, the Telecoms Regulator and complain. ComReg made clear here www.askcomreg.ie/news/changes_to_contracts___consumer_rights.7.1024.LE.asp that any notification of contract changes has to be sent individually to each customer and if you didn’t get a price change notification in writing on the 03 Dec you have a good chance of being successful with your complaint (www.askcomreg.ie/about_us/form.asp). There seems to be no justification for the price hike of between 37% and 64%.

ONLY BAD NEWS?
I know, price increases are not good news and it would be nicer to write about good news than about bad news. But not all that seems bad IS bad. After all you CAN change your phone and broadband service provider (not so simple for TV, I know) and you can change your Health Insurer. So there are cheaper options available and it just takes some initiative to move to the cheaper options. The good news is that You find out here in case you wouldn’t have known otherwise! ;-)

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 7500+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

ELAINE HOEY – HELLO OPERATOR ART SPACE
“Screwed” is the title of Elaine Hoey’s Light Art exhibition from 13 Jan -14 Feb in “Hello Operator”, a new arts space in Dublin City Centre. Hello Operator is in 12 Rutland Place, Dublin 1. www.elainehoey.ie

Normal Opening Hours from 13 Jan are Tue-Thu 10:00-20:00 and Fri + Sat 10:00-13:30. Tine Melzer uses language as material. WOSP – POLISH CHARITY – GREAT FINALE
The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (in Polish: Wielka Orkiestra ?wi?tecznej Pomocy – WO?P) is one of the biggest, non-governmental, non-profit, charity organizations in Poland. It will take place the 19th time in all Polish diasporas across the globe this January. The money collected will be used this year to buy medical equipment for children with urological and nephrological diseases. WOSP Dublin is organizing charitable events across the city.
On 9 Jan from 12:00-23:00 the bands Storyfold, a rising star on the Irish music scene, rocky Max Band and funky-pop Sunflower Seeds are supporting this year’s action. There are also other attractions such as book treasury, flea market and lotteries at the The Living Room (Cathal Brugha Street), Fibber Magees (80 Parnell Street) and Murray’s (33/34 O’Connell Street Lower). The heat will be raised by breath-taking fire dancers and bongo jam session. Unfortunately the programme at dublinwosp.org.pl/ doesn’t give any indication whatsoever about WHAT will happen WHERE. There is a list of bands and three venues, but it would be hugely helpful if the organisers detailed which band is playing where when. Oh and another thing would have helped! Unless you want to keep non-Polish people away from your event, maybe translate the programme into English? Just an idea! Google Translate helps, but just about!
It doesn’t say it explicitly, but I assume that there is no Admission Charge, instead money will be collected.

The Sunday Concerts in the Hugh Lane Gallery, formerly called “Sunday at Noon”, are free concerts of mostly classical music in the Hugh Lane Gallery. The concert on the 09 Jan is entitled “Wagner, Brahms and Stanford”. Colette McGahon (mezzo-soprano), Paul McNamara (tenor), Philip Mayers (piano) will perform the Wesendonk Lieder by Wagner and songs by Brahms and Stanford. www.hughlane.ie/whats_on_detail.php?id=655

CRAFTY MARKET – SHEBEEN CHIC

DEBENHAMS SALE – BRITISH IGNORANCE? STUPIDITY? OR…?
Last weekend Debenhams had a big sale on and everywhere in the shop they had signs that said “Save the VAT 18% OFF Today”. You can imagine that his puzzled many people, including myself. After all we all know that the VAT in Ireland is 21% and not 18%. So a number of people (including an employee at a check-out) speculated that it was British ignorance that got them to confuse specify the wrong numbers. Someone else thought that the person in charge must just be plain stupid. But the explanation is a lot simpler: What it said on the signs is correct, but it is not the smartest way of advertising the discount because it catches out too many people. The reason why it is correct is this: If an item is 100 Euro and 21% VAT is added, this amounts to EUR 121. If you now want to refund the VAT, you have to give a 18% discount off the total including VAT to arrive at (or close to) EUR 100. So it was neither ignorance, nor stupidity, but it wasn’t smart either. Oddly the receipts handed out on the day didn’t show the VAT at all. But it would only have caused even more consternation because obviously Debenhams did charge VAT (they are legally obliged to) but the sold the item for EUR 100 VAT inclusive. Imagine the till receipt would have shown that 21% VAT was charged even after the discount – albeit on a lower pre-VAT price. Some people would probably have gone mad over it. :-)
