Hi all!

Thanks a lot for the logo suggestions that some of you sent last week! I appreciate your help and support! During the week a number of you asked me if you have to be a Graphic Designer to make a suggestion or to send a rough idea. And I want to state clearly, that I appreciate EVERYBODY’S input. Even if you can’t draw AT ALL, but have this great idea, send me a mail with your description. Despite the fact that I got some suggestions, I will continue the search for another little while (approx. 2 weeks) before I will make a decision. Send me all your ideas :-) but HOPE that nobody is disappointed at the end of the process. There obviously can only be ONE logo. ;-)
And if you have creative friends, maybe rope them in as well. ;-) Some people asked if I have a suggestion for a logo, and unfortunately I don’t. BUT I could imagine that the logo depicts something that is typical for Dublin (NO pint of beer! ;-) ), maybe one of the iconic bridges or a building that you think would be recognised for being Dublin. The other option is to have a logo that just consists of symbols with NO link to Dublin. Many companies just use “swirly things” as logos. ;-)

This week there is a competition for tickets for a one-man theatre performance by Shadaan Felfeli and to be honest, I was reluctant to include it! Shadaan’s play is soooo brilliant that I think everybody should see it, but because he puts so much energy and passion in it, he should be rewarded by massive ticket sales. So, I decided to put the competition in, but to tell you what I thought about the play when I saw it earlier this year at the SOGO Festival. I decided to tell you that it really touched me, that his richness of description made me feel as if I was in the middle of the scene. He tells the tale of a Parsi story teller who finds it hard to get out of bed one sunny Indian afternoon and Shadaan, who wrote the play and performs it as well, does that with so much dedication and obvious talent that watching him is an experience in itself. When I heard the story, it reminded me of Paulo Coelho’s book “The Alchemist”. Shadaan’s story has nothing really to do with the Alchemist, but it is described and told in a similarly picturesque and descriptive way as the famous book and I remember that when I read the book I often felt as well that I was in the middle of the story. This week will be very busy and I am looking forward to it! On Sat we have a 2-day self-defence training course at www.kravmagaireland.com, but I will only attend part of it, because then I will go to the Bodhran workshop in Temple Bar. After that I will “visit” the Sand Sculptures in Dublin Castle and will then meet some friends. On Sunday I will goto the Latin American Feria (Check the Friday section for details) during the early afternoon and in the evening I will be on stage in the Olympia with Kevin Doyle and more than 20 friends for a performance of the Elvis Presley Story. Brilliant show .if you have no plans yet! Tickets are on ticketmaster.
During the week, the Career Bootcamp sounds really interesting (check Monday for details) and then on Thursday I will do my best to make it to the Porterhouse Presents event. There are a few other good things on this week, but I can’t do everything! :-)

THE VIRGIN AND THE VULTURE – TICKETS
Shadaan Felfeli is a talented actor and performer and he wrote this beautiful one-man play “The V irgin and the Vulture”, which he performs as well. I had the opportunity to experience this play at this year’s SOGO Festival and without over exaggerating in the slightest, I can say, that Shadaan’s play and his performance blew me away. The Vi rgin and the Vulture tells the fascinating tale of a Parsi storyteller who finds it hard to get out of bed one sunny Indian afternoon, and Shadaan has the talent to tell this story in such colourful and rich language that you feel you are in the middle of it. I can highly recommend his play and will definitely be there when he runs a small series of performances. On Mon 23 Aug and Tues 24 Aug, Shadaan will perform his play twice on each evening (18:00 and 20:00) in the Pearse Centre (next to the Trinity Capital Hotel) in Pearse Street. Tickets are EUR 10 and can be bought at the door, however because the Pearse Centre is quite small and because I expect and hope for a huge interest for tickets, you should reserve tickets with Shadaan by sending a mail to virginandvulture@gmail.com specifying for which of the four performances you would like to reserve tickets.

ULSTER BANK DUBLIN THEATRE FESTIVAL – FREE TICKETS
The Dublin Theatre Festival will take place from 30 September and last week I mentioned that the sponsor Ulster Bank is making 1000 tickets for a performance in the Gaiety Theatre available for free. The performance is called “A Night for Dublin” and will take place at 19:30 on Wed 29 Sept. You can now request a pair of tickets on the website www.ulsterbank.com/arts but you need to follow these instructions to make it happen: Go to www.ulsterbank.com/arts then click on “Enter Dublin Site”. At the top click on “3. A Night for Dublin” and then chose “Click here for “A Night for Dublin””. Now you need to fill your contact details in the form that appears, but there is currently a problem with the form. If you enter your address in more than one line, you are told that it is an “Invalid Address”! So, make sure that you separate your address by commas and enter it in one line only. The “Send Form” button wills stay grey unless you have filled in all relevant fields and only if the address is entered in one line only.

A big marquee is covering Meeting House Square in Temple Bar for the coming week and because this takes the risk factor “weather” out of the event planning equation, there will be events on Meeting House Square nearly every day of the week. TOEJAM CAR BOOT SALE – ON ICE
The next wonderful Toe Jam Car Boot Sale in the Car Park of the Bernard Shaw Pub in South Richmond Street was originally planned for this weekend, but the spoil sports from Dublin City put a stop to this great event. The guys in Bernard Shaw are working on overcoming the Car Boot Sale ban which seemingly is due to a planning issue. Long live the well oiled bureaucracy in Dublin City! Grrrr! Let’s hope that the Car Boot Sale can be back for September. DANGER IN OUR STREETS
A lot of people were shocked when finally Larry Murphy was released from prison today. Murphy was in prison for 10 years, has refused any therapy and is now free to walk the streets. He has done terrible stuff (www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/rapist-spends-first-night-as-free-man-following-release-469043.html) and was sentenced to 15 years, but because of good behaviour in Prison he go out already after 10 years. Eventually he will have to declare where he lives, but the first 7 days he will not have to do that. Many are shocked that someone like Murphy will ever get out of prison again or about the fact that he was not at least kept until his 15 years were up. I understand that at the end of a prison sentence, the prisoner has a right to be free again, but I do find it worrying that there is no possibility of guaranteeing to the people that do or might live near him that they will be safe. In the end – it turns out – the state is NOT protecting us whatsoever. So the only protection you can have is being prepared and being able to defend yourself and I am happy to say that for the last 8 years we (www.kravmagaireland.com) have helped approx. 1000 people per year to improve their ability to defend themselves!

GERMAN REUNIFICATION – PHOTO EXHIBITION
The German Embassy Dublin invites to an exhibition called ‘Wiederbesuchte Orte’ (Revisited Places) at the Central Library (ILAC Centre, Henry Street, Dublin 1) from 16-29 Aug 2010. The exhibited posters will show how the reunification of Germany has affected towns and landscapes. ERIN QUINN – PHOTOGRAHIC EXHIBITION – CFCP
“Surveillance: A Photographic Exploration of the Rapid Rise of Surveillance in Modern Society” is the title of a photographic exhibition by Erin Quinn. It will be in show in the Centre for Creative Practices, 15 Pembroke Street Lower, Dublin 2 (www.cfcp.ie) from 12-19 Aug. Admission is free.
The exhibition contributes a highly shocking and critical voice to the increased dialogue forming on the issues of surveillance, an issue that has reached critical mass since the 9/11 attacks.
Quinn spent over a year taking photographs of passengers in Dublin Airport to incite viewers to question their responses to images taken from a CCTV viewpoint. Placing the camera in exactly the same location, she waits and watches, only releasing the shutter when someone walks into the area of focus. None of her subjects know they are being photographed. Situations are captured. Things may not be as they seem. These people have done nothing wrong, nor are they about to, yet the images embody a sinister feel.

FRANK O’DEA – BALLA BAN ART GALLERY
The Balla Bán Art Gallery in the Westbury Mall (off Grafton Street) is exhibiting new works by Dublin artist Frank O’Dea from Tues 17 Aug to Sat 28 Aug. Working with oils Frank O’Dea has developed his own unique style where bright colours and simplicity are featured in his paintings. Regular themes include musicians, fashion models, lovers, and cafe/bar scenes and some quirky subject matters of everyday life as well as abstract works. www.frankodea.net

GRIFFITH COLLEGE GRADUATES – FARMLEIGH HOUSE
“Nine Tenths of the law” is an exhibition by recent graduates of the Griffith College part-time diploma photography students. The exhibition is a mix of commercial and fine art images. It visually explores the varied concept of possession and ownership in contemporary society. It will take place in the Cowshed Gallery in Farmleigh House, at the Castleknock end of Phoenix Park and will be on show from 20-20 Aug. www.gcd.ie and www.farmleigh.ie/Gallery/

ADRIAN DUNCAN – THE JOINERY
“How the mighty have fallen” by Adrian Duncan is art relating to translation. The work stems from video footage taken in a forest. This footage is accompanied by a narrated piece of fiction and autobiography focusing on issues in geometry, memory and compulsion. This video work is re-worded in the gallery space using sculpture, photography and writing. The work takes Friedrich Nietzsche’s essay, On Truth and Lying in a Non-moral Sense, as a point of reference.
In addition there are sculptural objects that are re-worded, using simple structural and mathematical principles, to contribute to a language used to describe the forest.
The exhibition will be on show from 19-24 Aug from 12:00-18:00 (except Sunday) at The Joinery, Arbour Hill, Stoneybatter, Dublin 7. www.thejoinery.org

As a celebration of the 200th Anniversary of Latin American Independence, the Latin American Festival is taking place from Wed-Sun 11-15 Aug. Music, Art Exhibition, Tango Performance, Capoeira Workshop and a Latin American Market are some of the free events. In addition there will be non-free film screenings, Tango classes & Performances and a Latin America Party. Check www.lancifestival.com for details. “NEW” MARKETS – GLASNEVIN + BLACKROCK
From next week two “new” markets will be included in the Regular Events Section on Saturdays (and Sundays). The markets are not really new, actually one of the two is anything but new, but they hadn’t been included in the Event Guide before, so they are a bit new. ;-)
The first market is a weekly food market with fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, wines etc in Glasnevin. It is called Honest2goodness (www.honest2goodness.ie) and found its place in an old glass factory so it is bad-weather-proof. The location is behind Lidl in Glasnevin in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre. The market is open from 09:30-16:00 every Saturday.
The second market is the Granddad of the Irish Markets! I visited it the first time approx. 20 years ago and at that time it was already well established. The market is the Blackrock Market in the centre of Blackrock and you can find there just everything. POINT VILLAGE MARKET
Every weekend on Sat and Sun the Point Village Market is taking place from 09:00-17:00. It is an outdoor food market with a flea market-like add-on. The market is next to the Point Depot (O2), right beside the last Luas stop “The Point” on the Red Line. YOGA IN PHOENIX PARK
Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com, who is a Dublin Event Guide Community Member for years, is helping Dublin Simon AND is providing a great service to you. IRISH HACKERSPACE WEEK
Hackerspaces are shared physical spaces where creatives from the Arts, Sciences and Technology communities come together to work on personal projects. Since 2009 hackerspaces have grown from 96 to 450 worldwide. Ireland has been part of that growth with hackerspaces growing from one to five since the beginning of 2010. To celebrate this fact the first Irish Hackerspace Week, which runs from 14 Aug – Sun 22 August, is taking place. The Irish Hackerspace Week will highlight the talents, creativities, and opportunities of modern hacker culture within Ireland. A diverse range of fun and informative events are planned including presentations, demonstrations, workshops, meet-ups and social events.

BIORHYTHM: MUSIC AND THE BODY – SCIENCE GALLERY
Because this week is not the busiest, remember that there are great long-term events. From 02 July until 01 October, the Science Gallery will show the new exhibition “Biorhythm: Music and the Body”. Music is a central part of the human experience, but what is the natural force that drives us to sing, strum, drum and dance? What is the scientific basis of whistling, humming and toe-tapping?
From an acoustic bed to sonic tables and experiments on your emotional response to pop music, Science Gallery’s Summer exhibition “Biorhythm” will allow you to feel how music moves your body through an interactive bazaar of unique sonic experiences, installations, experiments and performances from musicians, engineers and neuroscientists from around the world. REFRESH DUBLIN: UX 4 KIDZ – SCIENCE GALLERY
Refresh Dublin is a community of designers & developers working to refresh the creative, technical & professional culture of New Media in Dublin. PORTERHOUSE PRESENTS – MEETING HOUSE SQUARE
The roof over the Meeting House Square in Temple Bar got the Porterhouse to move outside for one night on Thurs 19 Aug from 18:00-23:00. Neither the Temple Bar website nor the Porterhouse website gives any details about this event (yet?). However, as a reader of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) you correctly expect to find out all the information here that you can’t find elsewhere, so I did dig up all the secrets. ;-) On Thurs there will be two great performances on Meeting House Square. Mirenda Rosenberg, a great American Soul, Blues and Gospel Singer (www.myspace.com/themirendarosenbergband), and the brilliant Irish band Mob Fandango, who play funk, jazz, soul and Reggae (www.myspace.com/mobfandango), will perform and there will be beer and delicious food from the Porterhouse. Admission is free.
I have to write another Event Guide on Thursday so I shouldn’t really be at this event, but I will try to spend at least a bit of time there.

TIME LOSS MEMORY – LIVE MUSIC + VIDEO – ST MARY’S ABBEY
On Thurs 19 Aug from 18:00-20:00 “Für Immer” are inviting to their second event in the TimeLossMemory Series at St. Mary’s Abbey, an 12th Century Cistercian Monastery in the heart of Dublin’s City Centre. Admission is free, but the venue is small, so only 50 people fit in. 16 seats can be reserved by e-mail to marysabbey@gmail.com with the title TimeLossMemory, the remaining seats will be available on a first come first served basis. Für Immer are a group that specialise in live music and video, they perform in galleries around Dublin and for Chapter and Verse they would play for 60 minutes accompanied by animated and live action

THE BEAUTY SPOT – DAKOTA BAR
“The Beauty Spot at Dakota” is a weekly event that was launched on 13 May. It runs on Thursdays from 19:00-01:00 in the Dakota Bar, 8/9 South William Street, Dublin 2. Love Music Hate Racism & The SCOOP (Save Children Out Of Poverty) are joining forces on Fri 20 August to bring you a collaborative event: Love SCOOP Hate Racism @ Sweeney’s Mongrel on Dame Lane from 21:00-02:30.
“Love SCOOP Hate Racism will consist of 3 floors of some of the most exciting live and spun music around. Upstairs they have the 7 piece soul journey Creamy Goodness, the wonderfully entertaining Robotnik, the new musical genius that is Patrick Kelleher, two of the best new bands in Dublin The Zealots and Squarehead, as well as new comer Barrie Cassidy are all playing live.
On the ground floor Gliders DJs Tanya Sweeney and Cillian McDonnell, as well resident Martin Ansbro will be playing the best of indie, rock , funk soul , disco and floor fillers. IRISH MUSIC CONCERT – MUSIC NETWORK

This week Alicia P., a friend of mine, is writing about something she (and I) found odd:

CROWD MANAGEMENT IN TEMPLE BAR
Last Saturday afternoon, Joerg and I decided to hang out and allow ourselves a lazy afternoon. While wandering in Temple Bar, we discovered an event neither of us had heard of. Tonight, “One Summers Eve”, event organized by Choice Cuts and sponsored by Bulmers Berry, said the banners on Meeting House Square. The line up seemed really promising: The North Strand Kontra Band, Brian Deady, supporting DJs and the one and only Hypnotic Brass Ensemble! If you don’t know them yet, do get your act together and check them out at www.hypnoticbrassensemble.com/
We discovered that the show was sold out… But that a limited number of tickets will be available at the door. No wonder, at EUR 12.50 + complimentary Bulmer Berry for a great line-up with the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble!
So there we were, at 19:30 queuing to get in after getting confirmation that there were still 150 tickets left. What we didn’t know is that we’ll be spending a great deal of that evening QUEUING. Yes, just queuing! You would think that events taking place in Meeting House Square are surely well organized. Well, we queued and queued and queued for 1 hour and 30 minutes in total before getting in! And so did people WITH TICKETS, people coming TO COLLECT TICKETS ONSITE and people WITH NO TICKETS. Everyone in the same queue and no one to direct the crowd. From time to time, someone would come out and invite people with pre-purchased tickets to get in, leaving people hoping to buy a ticket and – for a long while – even leaving people that had bought tickets but wanted to collect them, there to wait. The good mood quickly turned into frustration and consternation, wondering if anyone was actually in charge!? Then suddenly, at around 21:00, we were all invited to get in at a discounted price of EUR 10 to enjoy the rest of the evening. Sure, we’d miss the first band by now so a discount was very welcomed. But just like that! No more queue, as if the organizers had woken up! I’m not sure how they did their math but surely there wasn’t a large amount of people in the Square before we got in. But at least we were finally in and had our “1 free drink voucher” in our hands. Ahhh, “I LOVE DUBLIN… Let’s get to the bar” And then, just there, a déjà-vu… There it was again! The massive queue! This time for the bar, though. No, it was not a crowd but an actual queue going from one side of the square to the other for drinks. :-) The queue had just shifted, not disappeared! It took another 30 minutes to get our drinks and man, did we enjoy the drinks!
The show after that was great and people were dancing and singing along. We both agreed that the music was great, but the organisation of the event needed some serious overhaul! People will always remember the worst of an event and that’s the story they will go and tell other people, as you just read! ;-)
