Hi all!

Last week’s Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Cultures did NOT disappoint! ;-) I had a brilliant weekend on Sat+Sun and for me spending two days at the Festival is like going on holidays. I have to be honest: I find it difficult to understand that there are people in Dublin that love music and have never been at the Festival of World Cultures. How could you not at least try it once? ;-) Well, let’s hope there is another chance next year! :-) I say it like that because with the current economic challenges you can’t take much for granted, especially when it comes to free events. The Dublin Docklands Development Authority (DDDA), for example, has been reported to have debts of EUR 71mio (www.rte.ie/news/2010/0728/docklands.html) and with events in the Dublin Docklands already curtailed, who knows what will happen going forward. Let’s hope that other public bodies manage their money better!

[ad]

This week is a bank holiday weekend and traditionally bank holiday weekends are a lot less busy than other weekends. I guess it is the expected Exodus from Dublin that makes organisers nervous. Many people go home if they are from the country or if they are from abroad, so organisers expect that there will be less people to attend the events. For the people that stay it is a pity! You have a long weekend free and then not much is happening. But don’t complain! There is always the free museums (for rainy days) and the parks and Howth for walks and nature. In addition there are always SOME events. Maybe try something that you normally wouldn’t try! ;-)

Thanks a lot to everybody who helped with the Event Guide Guerrilla Marketing in Dun Laoghaire! It is much appreciated and the good news is that – with your help – we EASILY stepped over the magical 7000 subscriber mark. Another milestone in the life of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) achieved. Now it is onwards to 7500 and then with full speed in the direction of 10,000! Imagine, if everyone of you would only get ONE single person to subscribe, we could be on 15,000 overnight! ;-) So, what is stopping you?? :-)))

Last night I was at an event at which John Boyle from Boyle Sports was taking. John Boyle has started the company with a single betting shop and has expanded it over the last 28 years from 1 shop in Dundalk to 140 shops with 800 employees and a turnover of close to 1 billion. John had been fired as a bread delivery man, was fighting against alcohol and lived in Dundalk, when he decided to buy his first betting shop. Not the best starting point to achieve much! But, he says, he discovered that the mindset is the most important thing to achieve things in life! – Do you remember that I mentioned that about two weeks ago here? What is your mindset? Is it the mindset of a winner?
Watch this video clip about mindset in this week’s Feel Good Slot: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cpc-t-Uwv1I This video clip was included here before, but it is worth watching again even if you have seen it before!

Oh, and do you remember that I mentioned that I will run a full day seminar on Wealth Creation Mindset? I didn’t mention what it will be about last time and I hadn’t decided on the date. The seminar will take place in October and the most likely date at the moment is Sat 16 October. If you are interested and want to be kept informed, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject MINDSET. (The seminar will either be free or at a very very low price just to cover the cost.)

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

–Advertisement————————————
AFFORDABLE ADVERTISEMENT OPPORTUNITY
I want to try something! :-) Advertisement is often seen as an expensive thing and often smaller companies shy away from it. We are nearly 7000 people here and maybe some or even many of them would be interested in what you do or have to offer. If you want to let them know and think that advertisement normally is too expensive for you, then send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and tell me what you are offering in return for an ad here and – importantly – tell me why this is a fair offer in your opinion. I will consider every single fair offer!
——————————————————–

The week is a bit quieter, but nevertheless there are lots of things taking place. I have a lot of things to catch up on, so I will go on Saturday to the Point Village Market, maybe the Temple Bar Food Market and then will have a look at the Kit ‘n’ Caboodle Market. My plans for Sun I will decide depending on weather and will do some work later on Sunday and as well on Monday. While I was at the seminar in Portugal I had lots of ides about projects and the work needs to be done at some stage. So I might as well do it this weekend. :-) I am actually looking forward to it! Exciting stuff! LOL
I never made it to the Green Drinks, so I will try again on Tuesday and the rest of the week is already booked out with other hobbies, training and meeting friends. :-)

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

TEMPLE BAR MEETING HOUSE SQUARE UNDERCOVER
From 14-22 Aug Meeting House Square in Temple Bar will be covered again. This is not yet the great and fancy retractable cover that is planned (blog.templebar.ie/?p=821), but is a temporary cover, which is just a big tent/marquee put into Meeting House Square. Removing the risky element of “weather”, the week will be filled with events on Meeting House Square. Most of them are not free, but the ones that are will be listed here next week or the week after. www.templebar.ie/Events.aspx?eventthemeid=39

AVIVA STADIUM OPENS
The Lansdowne Road Football and Rugby Stadium, which – for commercial reasons – will be called Aviva Stadium for a while, is opening its doors for the first event. On Sat 31 July from 14:30 a Combined Provinces Rugby match will take place. It is a match between Ulster/Leinster and Munster/Connacht. The stadium has a capacity of 50,000 people, so can imagine that the area around the stadium will be a bit busy! ;-) Stay far away if you don’t plan to go to the match.

PHOENIX PARK MOTOR RACES CANCELLED
It was a fascinating (free) event last year! Imagine historic and high powered cars of all types racing around Phoenix Park (A few pictures are here www.flickr.com/photos/stephenhayes/sets/72157621981344702 and here www.flickr.com/photos/25355872@N05/sets/72157621864183295 ) for a whole day. An odd location, because you think more of deer than of racing cars when you think of Phoenix Park, and that was part of the fascination. I enjoyed it last year! This year would have been 107 years since the first race in 1903, but for financial reasons the motor races, which were scheduled for the weekend 14/15 August, unfortunately got cancelled: www.phoenixparkmotorraces.ie/ The organisers feel they can’t afford the races this year. If I remember it right, in 2008 it was cancelled as well, but it can’t have been the economical challenges back then. Let’s hope that the races will be back in 2011. I will keep you informed!

SAND SCULPTURES BACK IN DUBLIN
Duthain Dealbh (Fleeting Sculpture) are carving/building their sand sculptures in Dublin Castle’s Upper courtyard from 28 July to 02 August and you are more than welcome to come and watch the beautiful sculptures evolve. They will then be on public display until 29 August before they will be reduced back down to grains of sand.
This year, the theme is Vikings as a complement to the Dublin Viking Festival.
Previous years work and other work in snow ice and film can be seen on their website, www.duthain-dealbh.com You can join their facebook page as well: www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001217556672 I have seen their sculptures last year and you have to see them! Impressive!

NATIONAL MUSEUM EVENTS
I hope this will be the last time: Again I didn’t have enough time to transcribe the National Museum Events, so please have a look at www.museum.ie/en/list/calendar-of-events.aspx to check if there is something for you on the list.

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 6500+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

More to come!

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

PATRICIA KELLY – MADART GALLERY
“Winter Sunsets and Warm Woolly Jumpers” is the slightly anachronistic exhibition by Patricia Kelly at MadArt Gallery. It is on show in the in the summer, from 29 July to 07 August, despite the title. ;-) The MadArt Gallery is in 56 Lower Gardiner Street, Dublin 1. www.madartstudio.com

MOCKSIM – THE JOINERY
“Mockeyah” is the new exhibition in the Joinery by Mocksim. Mocksim’s work consists of looping films which combine simulation and animation displayed in conjunction with certain objects and occasional live art. The exhibition will be on show from 27 July – 01 Aug from 12:00-17:00 at The Joinery, Arbour Hill, Stoneybatter. www.thejoinery.org
And on Sat 13 July at 19:00 an Artist’s Talk will take place. www.mocksim.org/MocksimBiog.htm

Every weekend on Sat and Sun the Point Village Market is taking place from 09:00-17:00. It is an outdoor food market with a flea market-like add-on. The market is next to the Point Depot (O2), right beside the last Luas stop “The Point” on the Red Line. In addition to the market, there is outdoor entertainment every week on the Gig Rig stage and you can find out the programme here www.pointvillagemarket.ie/events On Saturday Jezzebelle, Milk and Liz Seaver will perform and on Sunday Mirenda Rosenberg, Chris Maher (DJ Set) and The Bionic Rats will be on stage.

OPENING OF DUBLIN’S “GIANT WHEEL”
The 60m Giant Wheel in the Docklands, Dublin’s answer to the London Eye, will open at 10:00 on Sat 31 July at the Point Village Market. Don’t compare it to the London Eye, though, because the wheel in London is 135m high, so more than double the Irish version, and the views in London are much better too. A 13 minute trip in Ireland in one of the enclosed capsules will cost EUR 9. So using the wheel is not free, but the opening event is. ;-) www.pointvillagemarket.ie/events A picture from during the build process is here photos.ireland.com/107205/dublinwheel0249crop_lrg.jpg

The class is run as a donation based class and you only give what you can afford or what you feel you can. For details go to www.twopalmsyoga.com/Park_Yoga.html – or contact Fiona on 085 8147402 Classes will be suitable for all levels, from beginners to more advanced students. KIT ‘N’ CABOODLE – MARKET
The Kit ‘n’ Caboodle Market at the POD on Harcourt Street is taking place on Sat 31 July from 12:30-18:30. It is yet another newish market. It is for handcrafted goods and I detect SOME similarity with the Crafty Market that takes place on Sun 01 Aug in Shebeen Chic. The organisers describe “The Kit n Caboodle is a creative event which brings together both Irish and International artists and craft-makers to showcase, share and sell their creations. Among the display you will find traditional African designs from Zambia and Kenya, hand-crafted glass ornaments and jewellery, hand-made macramé jewellery, funky clothing and much more! Therapeutic Indian Head Massage will be available on the day for those who want a more relaxing experience and nail art too! Throughout the day there will be music from live bands and the Pod’s balcony will host local Djs; Louis Scully (Discotekken/12 Sundays), Benny Smiles and Eoin Cody to keep you entertained while you browse and shop! Food and seating will be available and drinks promotions will be on offer from the bar for the duration of the event.” thekitncaboodle.blogspot.com/

KITES BUILDING – NUMBER 29 and IMAGINOSITY
Imaginosity will be at Number 29, the Dublin Georgian House Museum, for a series of free creative interactive family workshops. On Sat 31 July, the theme will be “Kites!”. “Assemble your own kite using rods, paper and string and take it to soar high in the air in the adjacent Merrion Square.” This unique summer programme will allow participants (families and children) to reflect on the typical activities that Dublin children would have engaged in through the 1800s; many of which are still played today.
The event takes place at Number 29 from 13:00-15:00, the Georgian House Museum in Fitzwilliam Street. Admission is free, but booking is essential as there are only 25 places: 01 702 6165 www.esb.ie/main/about-esb/numbertwentynine/education/current_future_events.htm

HORSE MARKET – SMITHFIELD PLAZA
And another month over: Every first Sunday of the month, the horse traders from Dublin and surrounding areas come together and sell and buy horses on Smithfield Plaza. This tradition is in place for many many years and after the modernisation of Smithfield Plaza, Dublin City tried to move the market to another location. This has not been successful yet and consequently the horse market is still a monthly feature in the City Centre. It starts relatively early in the morning and goes on until all traders have left, which is around 13:00. If you want to experience this somewhat anachronistic event, you should consider coming relatively early. I would recommend around 09:00-10:00 experience it at its peak. Experience it for yourself, it is a different world!! …and definitely not what you would expect in the centre of a European capital. ;-) Nick Carosello went there last month and took this video www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWQnmu8K-IQ
I know that there are concerns about the welfare of the animals and I do know that ISPCA representatives are supervising the horse market. Please note that I am not suggesting that you buy a horse there or that you support the horse traders in any inappropriate acts. Instead I am only reporting that this event is taking place and that it might interest some of you to watch the trading or the horses. Your presence there will not change anything good or bad and if Dublin City didn’t allow this open and somewhat controllable market, the traders would sell their horses elsewhere where the ISPCA and the police could not be present. So leaving that market in place is probably a good idea and better for the animals than driving the trading into the underground.

BANK HOLIDAY
The 02 Aug is bank holiday in Ireland. It means that banks and many office based companies are closed. (The people that have seen it do come back again and again anyway! ;-) ) Unfortunately shows in the Olympia are never free, so you have to buy tickets at www.ticketmaster.ie/Kevin-Doyle-Sings-the-Elvis-Story-tickets/artist/1039124 The tickets are EUR 25.50 or EUR 28 and I guarantee that you will enjoy the show!

______This is odd!!______________

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

DIGITAL TV
Do you NEED Digital TV? I am more than happy with Analogue TV and the rare occasion of me watching TV wouldn’t justify buying more equipment, required for watching Digital TV. If you are not too pushed about Digital TV either, then why are we spending 70 mio to let RTE (not the one with the best track record when it comes to wise use of tax payer’s money) roll-out a nationwide Digital TV service? No commercial provider will be involved, I guess because it just doesn’t make commercial sense for others to get involved. If it was a matter of adding Digital TV to the Analogue TV service, I wouldn’t object too much, but the plan is to switch of Analogue TV as soon as possible and therefore to FORCE us all to buy additional set-top boxes etc to watch TV again. You will NOT be able to use your analogue TV without a set-top box once the switch over to Digital TV has taken place! Totally unnecessary waste of money! www.rte.ie/news/2010/0729/dtt.html
