———————————————————————

Hi all!

The last week was just flying by! It feels as if I wrote the last Event Guide just a few days ago and NO, I am not talking about the “Special Event Guide” during the week. ;-)
I loved the weather during the week! Ok, it is still freezing cold at night with shivering 3 degrees, but during the day when the sun is out, it is really lovely. Promising, I hope! I remember when I moved to Ireland many years ago, everyone was talking about the BRILLIANT summer in the year BEFORE I came to Ireland and that it was the best summer in the last 20 years or so. Imagine how I was looking forward to the next many years with bad summers again! ;-)
[ad]
Nature is an interesting thing, isn’t it? On Wednesday I was wondering what I would write about today and then a mountain in Iceland decides to turn hot and to spit out lots of dirt and now the whole world is turned upside down! I know at least 13 people who were affected by the flight cancellations and the bad news is that it is far from over. Last night Iceland reported that the volcanic activity had increased again and the volcanic ash is still up in the air and really hazardous for planes! So until it rains the ash down on the ground the “Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC)” in London (yes it does really exist, I am not making that up!) is warning against opening the airspace. Oddly though, they have no clue where the ash really is and how much there is around. All they use at the moment is computer models based on satellite images and wind forecasts. But satellite images only show the highest concentration of ash, once it gets diluted it is still in the air, still poses a danger but nobody knows anymore where it is. And the volcano with the funny name (Eyjaffjalljokull) keeps spitting and even has intensified its activity!

Dublin Airport has re-opened but most planes will not fly because destination airports are closed or are “behind” closed airspace. Ryanair and Aer Lingus have cancelled many planes already pre-emptively and won’t suddenly change everything again. Based on the VAAC and the information from DAA only the Western direction towards the USA is fully ok. The Eastern direction is still not clear enough to fly. Have a look at the pictures here how it started www.cfmu.eurocontrol.int/PUBPORTAL/gateway/spec/PORTAL.14.0.0.P.254.53/_res/VOLCANIC_ASH_ADVISORY1400.PNG and where the ash cloud is now www.cfmu.eurocontrol.int/PUBPORTAL/gateway/spec/PORTAL.14.0.0.P.254.53/_res/VAG_0600z.png UK airports are closed at least until 19:00 today, in the London area possibly even until 01:00 on Saturday! Brussels is closed until 17:00, Frankfurt and Paris until 19:00. Sweden and Denmark are closed until midnight today! All this information was last updated at 12:00 on 16 April and is directly from Eurocontrol, the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation. So the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) provides you with the same information the Irish Emergency Task Force has. ;-)

Kevin F. suggested that the whole problem might have been caused by a misunderstanding stemming from language difficulties: After the banking crisis in Iceland and the massive losses British and other European investors suffered, he thinks Iceland was asked for “cash” but instead sent “ash”. :-))))

Well, if you are stuck in Dublin, have a look what Dublin has on offer in the form of free events and if your friends are stuck here suggest the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) to them:

www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf
It would be great if you could spread the word. Thanks!

Some might find this week’s “Feel Good Slot” a bit strange, but think about this: Is it not often that even in a situation that appears unfortunate or would be more in the “bad news” category we can find a silver lining at the horizon? A bit of light at the end of the tunnel? And when we find that bit of positivity, does it not allow us to accept the bad news a good bit easier? I found some impressive picture from the volcanoes in Iceland and find them fascinating: www.flickr.com/photos/yahooeditorspicks/galleries/72157623855495574

Last week Cathy A., Damien McK. and Sharon O’S. generously helped by donating money to the Dublin Event Guide because they agree that this weekly newsletter is worth a LOT. And if YOU want to help me working for 15 hours through every Thursday night with some incentive ;-) , you can still help! It is not too late yet: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

This newsletter is a non-paid spare-time activity of mine, not a commercial project and if you like it you are invited to help with a donation. You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent. ;-)

You can donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm if you want to transfer money to my bank, just drop me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend is turning out different than planned. Friends of mine were meant to come from Spain to visit me and to go to the Whitney Heuston concert. However, their flight is cancelled, so no visitors and bigger problem, I have two tickets for Whitney Heuston to collect on their behalf that I would like to sell (on their behalf). If you are interested (tickets for Sat 17 Apr) please let me know as soon as possible!
After this change of plans I will probably go to the Record Store Day on Saturday and definitely to the ToeJam Car Boot Sale. On Sunday I am hoping for good weather and might go for a little Dublin Bike Tour and in the evening you find me again at the Gardiner Street Gospel Mass.
My coming week will be quite busy, and I can’t see a MUST GO event for me, so I might just do my Krav Maga training, Gospel Group rehearsal, Krav Maga training again and then NLP training group. I think that is enough for one week! ;-)

______Competition______________

WHALE MUSIC – PLAY – TICKET COMPETITION
Sarah M. from the La Touche Players told me about a play she is involved in. It is called “Whale Music” by Anthony Minghella and is directed by Noel McCarthy. The La Touche Players are performing the play from Tues 20 – Sat 24 April at 20:00 every evening. The venue will be Teachers Club, 36 Parnell Square West, Dublin 1 and tickets are EUR 15/12 and you can book at www.ticketoffice.ie/latouche. You can as well become a fan of the theatre group at www.facebook.com/latoucheplayers. Whale Music tells this story “Returning to her home town on the coast, Caroline faces an unexpected pregnancy and impending choices. Leaving Dublin to find peace and solitude, moving in with the bohemian Stella may not be such a good idea! ‘Whale Music’ explores the thoughts and attitudes of a motley crew of women but ultimately deals with the humour and truth of human connection and the inevitably cruel realities of life.” Sarah was so nice to make a pair of tickets for the performance on 20 Apr at 20:00 available for a competition, so if you want to win this pair of tickets, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with WHALE in the subject line and your name and your mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by Sunday 18:00 and I will notify the winner on Monday.

CASTLEPALOOZA MUSIC AND ARTS FESTIVAL – COMPETITION
Castle Palooza, the “small festival with the big heart and the stunning setting” in Charleville Castle, Tullamore will take place on 31 July and 01 August this year and “Castlepalooza celebrates its 5th birthday with one of its most exciting line-ups. Up to 45 acts will be performing over two days and festival-goers will find the perfect recipe for a fantastic festival, where they can sit back, relax and soak up the sounds in the breathtaking grounds of Charleville Castle, Tullamore.
Headed up by music mavericks Mercury Rev who are exclusive to Castlepalooza this Summer, the August Bank Holiday weekend will see well established acts, such as Fionn Regan and Wave Machines, teamed with quality up-and-coming bands taking to the stage amidst a cocktail of fun and cultural activities.”
Tickets are limited to 3,000 so get yours before they’re gone on www.castlepalooza.com or from usual outlets. Two-day tickets including camping are EUR 99 plus service charge. (There are some premium tickets available as well if you prefer a more sophisticated camping experience. Check the website for details.)
The nice people from Castle Palooza have made a pair of tickets available for a lucky reader of the Dublin Event Guide and you should definitely enter this competition. All you have to do is to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject PALOOZA and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. In addition you have to tell me how many people are on the picture of “Wave-Machines”. Just go to www.castlepalooza.com and then select LINE-UP to find the picture in the first row. Your mail has to be with me by 15:00 on Wed 21 April. www.castlepalooza.com If you have entered the competition last week, you do NOT need to (and shouldn’t!) enter a second time! ;-)

MOUNTAIN SAFETY TRAINING – COMPETITION
The Adventure Company “Outdoors Ireland” ran a Mountain Safety Promotion in the Wicklow Mountains on 11+18 April and the winners were Heather Madden and Tom McManamon. Congrats! www.outdoorsireland.com

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

If you work in a company or have your own company where running a competition in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) would help to reach the 6000 readers of the Event Guide, just drop me a mail and we can discuss the details: dublineventguide@gmail.com If you organise a non-free event and want to have it listed in this Event Guide then through a competition you have the opportunity to do that.

HEINEKEN GREEN SPHERES – FOALS – ACADEMY
Heineken Green Spheres will soon be in town again! UK act “Foals” have been unveiled for the next Heineken Green Spheres, due to land in Dublin’s Academy on 14 May 2010. The Oxford based band (www.myspace.com/foals) will play the outer-world show in the same week their new album Total Life Forever is released. Foals rose to prominence in 2008 when their debut album Antidotes reached No 3 in the UK charts. Currently they are selling out all venues they perform at and the gig in Dublin promises to be another brilliant performance.
Heineken Green Spheres is a series of Heineken sponsored music events. Tickets for the gigs are free, but some conditions apply, so you better have a look at the information on the website. In essence you have to get two friends to agree to come with you before the 28 April, otherwise you will not make it in the pot for the draw of tickets. So make sure that you register as soon as possible and then let your friends know. All the instructions are on the website here: ad-emea.doubleclick.net/clk;224143515;47887516;m?http://www.heinekenmusic.ie/greenspheres/tickets/

They meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month, in Ron Blacks ( Dawson Street, Dublin 2) from 19:00-22:00. If you are from Brazil or just are interested in Brazil and Brazilians, have a look at Ed’s website.

DUNDRUM TODDLER GROUP – DUNDRUM LIBRARY
Anita A told me about a toddler group in Dundrum. Every Fri from 10:00-12:00 this free toddler group meets in Dundrum Library. Children play with the provided toys and from 11:00 there is a 20 min singing together. www.dlrcoco.ie/library/RA.htm

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 6000+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

More to come!

TOEJAM CAR BOOT SALE – BERNARD SHAW PUB
The ToeJam Car Boot Sales is back! And it is not just back, it is much improved as well! ;-) On Sat 17 Apr from 12:00-19:00 you can browse and buy in one of Dublin’s most interesting car boot sales. It is not the biggest, not the nicest, not the one with the most interesting products on offer, but it is the one with the quirkiest people and one that definitely has atmosphere. Well, I am a little biased, I guess, because my first Toe Jam Car Boot Sale two years ago was a really odd (in a good way!) experience and in addition I met some lovely people at it including what must be the most charming Christmas Log seller in the world. ;-) Well, the car boot sale took a long break but is back now and will be a little more structured than it was before. Let’s see how or ig it has changed significantly. To get there you go to the Bernard Shaw Pub in South Richmond Street near Portobello. In the pub look for the smoking area and then leave the smoking area to get into the car park. To get an impression of what it is about check this www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuhHPoCq09c Admission is free. m.bodytonicmusic.com/bernardshaw/story/24/#cbs

CHARITY RUN NOT FOR CHARITIES?!?!?
Last Sunday the Irish Mail on Sunday reported that the named charities were not getting ANY of the money people pay to participate in Charity Runs like the one this Sunday. This is very odd! While promoted everywhere as a Charity Run, it seems that the entry fee of EUR 32 is completely staying with the organisers, who are a commercial organisation, and only ADDITIONAL funds raised by the individual participants will go to the charity.
With 12,000 expected participants at EUR 32 per head, the money taken amounts to the handsome amount of EUR 384,000. Despite the fact that Phoenix Park now charges small companies that use the Park for running sports activities, the organisers of the Charity Runs seemingly do not have pay a cent to the Office of Public Works (who own the park), so the organisers will walk away with a very nice profit!
The charities rely on the additional money the participants get from family and friends but oddly the website doesn’t even explain that and in the article last Sunday statements from the Mary Keating Foundation were in no way critical of the organisers. Since many participants come from abroad you can imagine that the participants THINK they contribute to a charity but in reality they are giving their money to the British organisers Nova International.

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
