Hi all!

I had mentioned that writing the Event Guide this week will be a challenge. I was more or less away until Tuesday and then had to work on a proposal in my day job and was busy in the evenings, so I am now starting with this week’s Event Guide and it is 22:35 on Thursday evening. If you go to the bottom of this mail, you will find out when I will get finished. :-)

The last week was sooo busy for me. I mentioned last week, that I would spend my time at a training course from Friday until Tuesday. Together with 37 other lovely people, we trained, practised, studied and learned from 09:00-21:00 for 5 days with additional work most days for the evening after the course. Tough? Yes! But hugely interesting, exciting and educational. And it was all worth it! Since Tuesday evening I am now qualified as a Master Practitioner of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), Master Results Coach, have a certificate in Master Hypnosis and in Advanced Neurological Repatterning and am certified as Performance Consultant. :-) Did I mention that the last few weeks were quite busy in my life? ;-) I entirely enjoyed the course and am looking forward to applying my skills to help people that are currently stuck in some aspects of their life and want to move to bigger and better things. Marc Aurelius said “If a thing is humanly possible, consider it to be within your reach!” and that is the approach you should take in life. Sometimes we need to clear the path from stones and fallen trees and other obstacles and that’s where coaches can provide the push that is needed. If you want to find out more send a mail to me at dublineventguide@gmail.com. A number of you asked some questions last week already and I will get back to you over the weekend. I just didn’t get a chance yet! ;-)

Because of all this time spent away from the day to day tasks, I wasn’t able to gather and collect snippets for the Dublin News and the “This is Odd!”, so all a bit shorter this week. Next week I hope to be back on track.

Please keep spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events):

This week the “Feel Good slot” is a repeat of the Marc Aurelius quote: “If a thing is humanly possible, consider it to be within your reach!” Think about it! What is stopping you from achieving what you want to achieve and what could you do to leave the old problems behind? If you want to know more about Marc Aurelius, the Roman emperor, check out en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcus_Aurelius ..And if you feel stuck in your life, make sure that you do something about it!

The main sponsor is www.kravmagaireland.com, the self-defence training centre for everyone, which provides regular 12-week or 2-day self-defence training courses for beginners.

Currently more than 5000 people are receiving this Event Guide every week and the wonderful and nice people that have helped financially to get this newsletter to you every week are listed in the next section. To keep this newsletter going in its current form and to improve the layout and readability your help is needed too! You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month i.e. 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter) as a fair donation. (If you pay it monthly, the bank or PayPal fees are nearly more expensive than what will arrive with me, so a once-yearly payment is probably better for you and me.) — I know, some of you multiply 5000 x 12 and come up with huge numbers. ;-) I like your positive thinking, but over the last two years only about 2% of the subscribers have donated anything, so the big car and house and luxury holiday for me are FAR off and your donation is really only used to ensure the survivability of this newsletter.

You can transfer your donation directly to “Joerg Steegmueller, AIB, SortCode 93-36-78, AccountNo 03556043″ or donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no guarantee for correctness can be given.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

Since this newsletter is getting longer and longer with all the free events available, this section is meant to provide some help in picking and choosing the events I will or would go to. This is not the “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences, so if it helps you I am glad, but feel free to ignore this section completely! :-) All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

ADVERTISEMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN EVENT GUIDE
If you want to reach the 5200-strong Dublin Event Guide Community with your message AND want to help me produce this newsletter every week, talk to me about advertisement in the Event Guide. Advertisement can be by text – like this note – or with a picture/graphics. The investment for advertisement is very low, especially in comparison to the big value. Contact me via dublineventguide@gmail.com to find out more.
——————————————————–

Tonight and tomorrow I will go to a Halloween Party. Not my preferred type of party, but meeting nice friends is worth the sacrifice. ;-) During the day on Sat I will be busy with a special training day for 70 (!!) of your www.kravmagaireland.com students. It will be either brilliant or mayhem. ;-)
On Sunday I will definitely go to the Chocolate Festival in Temple Bar and in the evening I will be at the Gardiner Street Gospel Mass again. Next week, I hope to be able to squeeze one or two of the Design Week events in.
Have a nice Halloween!

______Competition______________

THE SECRET CASTLE OF MAGIC – TICKET COMPETITION
Castle Dracula & Sillybilly.ie present “The Secret Castle of Magic”. The ‘Secret Castle of Magic’ – a show for older kids and adults – is Ireland’s only Magic venue. There is only one public night per month and the next one is tonight. Tickets are EUR 12 (EUR 10) and children have to be at least 12 to be allowed in. Sillybilly.ie have made a pair of tickets available for this show and the winner of the draw unfortunately had to tell me that they can’t make it and it is now too late for a re-draw. If you are fast and can make a decision quickly you still have a chance. The event is already tonight, so if you are available tonight and want to win the tickets, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with MAGIC3 in the subject and your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. The first mail I receive will win the pair of tickets. www.sillybilly.ie/news/42/secret-caslte-of-magic The venue for the show is Castle Dracula in Westwood Club, Clontarf Road, Dublin 3.

MERCHANT OF VENICE – TICKET COMPETITION
The Dublin Shakespeare Society is performing “The Merchant of Venice” in the Teachers Club Theater, 36 Parnell Square West, Dublin 1 from 03-07 Nov (19:30). The play is directed by Savio Sequeira. It was written between 1596-1598 but the production is set in Mussolini’s Italy between 1933 and 1938; it was during this period that Mussolini passed a range of anti-Semitic laws causing great pain, suffering and hardship to the Jewish Community living in Italy at that time.
The nice people from the Shakespeare Society invite you all to come to their performances and tickets (EUR 15/12) can be bought via 085-8432881. I will ring the winners today (Fri) and will announce them next week here. www.dublinshakespearesociety.ie/extraextra.html

VAN CLEEF – SINGLE LAUNCH HALLOWEEN PARTY
Michael Teehan from the Rock/Pop/Indie band Van Cleef told me that the Lower Deck in Portobello will be the venue for a big Halloween Party on Sat 31 Oct. Van Cleef are launching their single on that evening and will perform on that evening together with guests The Gandhis & The Civilians. The event starts at 20:30 and admission is EUR 5 (a free single is included!) Find out more about Van Cleef on www.myspace.com/vancleefmusic Van Cleef made a pair of tickets available for a competition and I will ring the winner today (Friday) and will announce the name here next week.

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

______Dublin News______________

As I have explained in the introduction, I didn’t have time this week to gather news snippets for this section, so only one that I came across.

DUBLIN CITY TRAFFIC AND PARKING CHANGES
Only temporary plans are discussed, but the plans on the table are a big step in a new direction. It all seems to be driven by the fact that the shops in Dublin City report a loss of revenue of 30%. The plans are that the only recently introduced car ban at College Green, which got the stupid (and incorrect) name “Bus Gate” will be temporarily lifted from mid-November until mid-January. The second plan that will be discussed at the City Council Meeting on Monday seems to suggest the suspension of pay-and-display parking enforcement for the 15,000 car parking spaces in the City Centre from 14:00 on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in the pre-Christmas period. www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/1029/breaking64.htm

NEW PLANS FOR BALLSBRIDGE HOTELS
Sean Dunne, who had bought a massive site in Ballsbridge for EUR 450 million in 2005 before the building/development business went down the drain, had originally planned to knock down the three hotels “Jury’s Hotel”, “The Jury’s Tower” and the “Berkeley Court”. Just a few days before an auction for all the contents of the hotels was scheduled for, the decision was made to re-open the hotels while the planning application process runs. So in September 2007 they opened again as D4 Hotels with Ballsbridge Inn, Ballsbridge Towers and Ballsbridge Court as the respective names. Now the former Berkeley Court Hotel will be renamed from “Ballsbridge Court Hotel” into D4Berkeley and it is planned that the hotel will stay open for at least another 5 years. The plan was originally to build a 37 storey building on the site, but thankfully the planning application was refused. www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/0130/breaking25.htm Only now in October a new planning application was submitted. This time it seems that the development will be more in line with the surroundings and most buildings will only go up to 10 storeys.

LIBERTY HALL PLANS
It is not the newest news, so you might have heard about it before. SIPTU has revealed its plans for Liberty Hall. Many people don’t like the look of Liberty Hall and I can understand that to a certain degree. But the building has some nice features and is not really that ugly. Inside it “feels” very old and confined. Now SIPTU, the trade union that owns the building has decided to knock it down in 2011 and to replace it with a new 20-storey building. I wonder if the people that dislike the current Liberty Hall really like the new building more. I think it looks bland and uninteresting. www.irishconstruction.com/page/2389 So I am not sure if the existing iconic building is not better than the boring new one!?

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. If you are one of the courageous people who has recently taken the risk and has started a company and if you could do with spreading the word, I am happy to help you! My contribution will be to let the 4600+ readers of the Event Guide know about your new business and hopefully that will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide – not a demanding task, I would think. :-) (Please note that this offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages, not for established companies/enterprises. If you are established and you want to reach the readers of this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) I will be happy to discuss the (very affordable) advertisement options with you. :-) )

If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

HALLOWEEN EVENTS
Friday and Saturday will be filled with Halloween events in lots of different locations. If you have children in the right age group, I will list a few more events for you in the next Event Guide. But I am fully aware that if you do not have any children the attractiveness of Halloween is not necessarily huge – at least for some. ;-) For Halloween events have a look at these websites

HALLOWEEN GHOST WALK – DONABATE
Blaithin O’D informed me about an event in Donabate that she thought might be interesting to some of you. It is a Halloween Ghost/Horror walk for the Irish Wildlife trust in Turvey woods, Donabate on Fri 30 Oct (18:30-21:00). It doesn’t fully fulfil the “free events” criteria because there is a charge of EUR 3 that goes to the Irish Wildlife Trust, but for such a low price it might make sense to include it anyway.

SOUNDSCAPES
Last chance: The Contemporary Music Centre (19 Fishamble Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 8) presents Soundscapes, a ten-day outdoor celebration in sound of the work of veteran Irish composer Roger Doyle, often described as ‘the Godfather of Irish electronic music’. The show runs from 22-31 Oct (12:00-16:00), as part of the DEAF Festival 2009. In an imaginative use of its 200-year old listed building in Fishamble Street, Temple Bar, the Contemporary Music Centre will create a dramatic outdoor sound gallery to play Doyle’s strikingly contemporary electronic and piano music from speakers located on the front of the building and in its enclosed rear courtyard. Six different playlists spanning Doyle’s career across the last three decades will be broadcast each afternoon. www.cmc.ie

DEAF 2009
DEAF 2009 (Dublin Electronic Arts Festival) will close on 31 Oct. A full timetable of events is here www.deafireland.com/2009/ but if you are only interested in the last day (Saturday) check this: deafireland.com/2009/?page_id=453 There are still a good number of free events on.

FARMLEIGH HOUSE – FOOD MARKET

CRAFTY MARKET – NEWMARKET SQUARE, DUBLIN 8
Let me quote the organisers Ailbhe O’Connell and Louise Gambrill cause I couldn’t say it any better: “The Crafty Market is back again on 01 Nov, our seventh month in business! On the first Sunday of every month 45 stall holders set out their wares in an indoor marketplace in Dublin’s Coombe district. Customers come from far and wide to avail of the original works for sale, from pottery to woodwork, paintings to crochet, toys to stationery – there’s something for everybody at The Crafty Market. Our policy is to only take in stalls that are selling their own, entirely handmade crafts. Nowhere else in Dublin has such a wide array of handicrafts, that can be bought straight from the artist. Throughout the day a selection of singers and musicians perform in the main hall, and the Zoryanna Bellydancing Troupe also do a set each month.” The Crafty Market takes place on Sun 01 Nov from 12:00-17:00. The venue is the Dublin Food-Coop building in 12 Newmarket Square, Dublin 8. Parking is free outside.

SUNDAY AT NOON CONCERT – HUGH LANE GALLERY
Nearly every Sunday a free “Sunday at Noon” concert is taking place in the Hugh Lane Gallery. From 12:00-13:00 classical music will be performed for free. No booking is required. NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION
The trade union will protest on Fri 06 Nov at 14:30 at Parnell Square. They claim “The ICTU campaign for a ‘Social Solidarity Pact’ to include job creation, job protection, an economic stimulus package and opposition to pay and welfare cuts and pension protection, is now gathering momentum.” But I just don’t get who they target with their protest. Is it the government? Then how will strikes/work stoppages help to get the country into a more competitive position? Or is it big businesses? But will they perform better when the employees refuse to work? Sure nobody likes cuts, but if the money is not available it has to be taken from some where. The only other option is to protest against certain cost, but the ICTU campaign seems to be a blanket approach with no suggestions for solutions and with no specific focus. Maybe someone wants to explain it to me?

ALCOHOL AND IRELAND
Maybe you followed the current debate about the reduction of the max alcohol level for motorists. In the whole EU only the UK (0.08) and Malta (0.09) have a similar or higher permissible blood alcohol level and with that in mind, the Department of Transport is intending to reduce the blood alcohol content (BAC) limit from 80mg to 50mg per 100ml. I know, that means that if you drive you can not risk drinking alcohol, but considering the dangers of drunken driving, I think it makes sense. But what madness obsessed 18 TDs (members of the parliament) and 3 Senators to sign a petition against a reduction!? Isn’t it odd that Alcohol is so important in Ireland that drinking is more important than driving safely? Sure, a reduction will have to result in a cultural shift away from pubs, but maybe it is time for that? Where would you go if you want to get a coffee after 20:00 at the moment? Would it not make sense to have a number of cafes that open until late like Café Moda in Rathmines? I would like that! (Moda is not anymore what it once was, the prices went up and the quality down and opening hours became shorter, but the concept is in my opinion still something that lots more cafes should adopt. www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/1020/breaking27.htm www.menupages.ie/restaurants/cafe_moda.aspx

———————————————————————

Hi all!

This week and next week I will be so busy that writing the Event Guide will be a little more of a challenge than normally, but I will still do my best to provide you with all the information about the big amount of free events in Dublin. From Friday until Tuesday I will do the next step of my NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) course and all going well, my Masters qualification will be completed at the end of next Tuesday. I signed up for that course purely because I was hugely interested in it. But since starting that path of education, it really widened my horizon and who knows what will come from it. ;-)

As far as the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” is concerned, I can tell you that this new educational direction has had and is still having a huge impact. So, indirectly you ALL are part of it! :-) My interest in Personal Development started many years ago with a book by Joseph Murphy (“Power of the Subconscious Mind”: astore.amazon.co.uk/dubeveguiforf-21 ) which everybody should read. MUCH later, I searched for free events for this Event Guide and came across the free 3-day seminar Breakthrough to Success which will take place in Dublin again from 19-21 March 2010 (www.breakthroughtosuccess.eu/?af=CLA1035324) and that is when things really took off. If you are interested in more detail about this path or have any questions, drop me a mail (dublineventguide@gmail.com) and I will be happy to tell you more.

Important for all of you if you are a regular and interested reader of this newsletter is that I am currently working on ways to improve the Event Guide and I would very much appreciate your input! I know that the top of the wishlist is a user friendlier layout. But as long as I am writing the Event Guide as a hobby with no commercial focus, beautifying the layout takes time that I currently don’t have. Maybe you have a clever idea how I can improve things gradually? PLEASE let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com And if your idea is radical, please tell me as well. – I can’t guarantee that your idea will be implemented, but every suggestion helps me to improve your Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events).

Please keep spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events):

This week the “Feel Good slot” is trying to make you laugh for a few seconds. Have you seen the laughing babies? Soo funny. Watch it and laugh or at LEAST smile. It will make you feel better. Guaranteed! :-) www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-UF-h1K4rM

Thanks to nice person who donated who helped this week with a donation, but doesn’t want to be mentioned here. Every cent counts and every donor is really important!

This Event Guide is sponsored by Esme E, Cliodhna D, Brian L, Padraig S, Kathie S, Orla niF, Jef B, Susanna N, Kate C, Nicola J, Claus Sch, Gordon S, Jeanne M, Fiona O’C, Marta M, Angela C, Isabelle F, Saundra S, Meisoon N, Ruth F, Valerie McN, Estelle O, Aoife M, Mairin M, Fionán O’L, Maeve L, Blaithin O’D, Ciara D, Mike G, Andrej G, Deirdre R, Vanessa O’L, Chris McK, Frank B, Dolores P, Cornelia K, Cathy A, Orla C, Kevin McC, Steph G, Wanda J, Siv M-J, Niamh niS, Gwen H, Jasmin T, Ian O, Eva C, Will P, Gráinne P, Caroline R, Elizabeth F, Suzanne B, Adele G, Jack C, Keeva H, Mairead MacM, Niamh G, Siobhan C, Jackie B, Penny O’D, Kathryn K, Aidan G, Ciara G, Deirdre L, Stephen D, Mary Q, Donald P, Aidan C, Julia Sch, Isak R-B, Sharon O’S, Brajan V, Nancy O’D, Zelie McG, Niamh K, Jennie R, Semin S, Gavin H, David G, Becky B, Emer niB, Niamh N, Esme E, Ciaran H, Lois M, Gerard Ph, James O’H, Pere OC, Marsha D, Sarah McC, Patrick O’C, Sandra R, Christoph Sch, Deirdre O’B and www.stickyfingerstravel.com (The travel guide for parents travelling with their children.), www.flamencoindalo.com (A group that supports and promotes the art of Flamenco in Ireland.), www.thepaulkanegallery.com (A great Art Gallery, located at 6 Merrion Square, which supports contemporary Irish artists.) and www.a1computers.ie in Dun Laoghaire/Cabinteely (…who repair computers, printers and sort out Internet problems fast and who sell computers, laptops and low priced printer cartridges).

From Friday until Tuesday, I will be at a training course, so I won’t be able to go to any events. But if I were around, I would definitely go to the Red Line Roots Music Festival and to some events of the DEAF 2009 Festival. I hope you will have a nice bank holiday weekend. As usual the bank holiday itself is not a hugely busy day, but with the Dublin City Marathon a big event is taking place even if that is not a mass appeal event. ;-)

______Competition______________

THE SECRET CASTLE OF MAGIC – TICKET COMPETITION
Castle Dracula & Sillybilly.ie present “The Secret Castle of Magic”. The ‘Secret Castle of Magic’ – a show for older kids and adults – opened its doors in November 2008 and is Ireland’s only Magic venue. There is only one public night per month so you have to book in advance. The Secret Castle features Eamonn Murphy (Winner of ‘Irish Magician of the Year 2009), Nevin Cody (Secretary of the Society of Irish Magicians) and Ronan MacGabhann (Winner of the Gold Star for good spelling – Age 7 ;-) ). Tickets are EUR 12 (EUR 10) and children have to be at least 12 to be allowed in.
The next performance will take place on 30 Oct close to Halloween ;-) and after the success of last months competition, Sillybilly.ie have made another pair of tickets available for this show. If you want to be in with a chance to win this pair of tickets, you have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with MAGIC2 in the subject and your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. IN ADDITION you have to tell me what flying object the magician on the Sillybilly.ie poster is reaching for. Check it here www.sillybilly.ie/news/42/secret-caslte-of-magic The venue for the show is Castle Dracula in Westwood Club, Clontarf Road, Dublin 3. Your mail has to be with me by 17:00 on Tues 27 Oct.

And to make it even more interesting, two of you can win a pair of free tickets each. The winners can choose on which night they want to attend (subject to availability). To be in with a chance to win, you need to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with VENICE in the Subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your entry has to be with my by 17:00 on Tue 27 Oct.

The event starts at 20:30 and admission is EUR 5 (a free single is included!) Find out more about Van Cleef on www.myspace.com/vancleefmusic Van Cleef made a pair of tickets available for a competition and if you would like to win these two tickets, you need to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject CLEEF and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. The mail has to be with me by 17:00 on Tues 27 Oct.

COOMBE CHARITY EVENT + THE SPECTRUMS – TICKET COMPETITION
The brilliant 80s Tribute Band “The Spectrums” was performing on Thurs 22 Oct at a charity event for the neo natal ward of the Coombe Hospital in Dandelions. They had made a pair of tickets available and the lucky winner was Majella Moloney. Congrats!

U2 LIVE CONCERT ON YOU TUBE
The Irish Times reported last week that U2 will stream their concert in California live on YouTube. The concert at the Pasadena Rose Bowl in California will start at 20:30 Californian Time on Sun 25 Oct. Since the Summer Time in Ireland ends on Sunday morning, I am – like many other people slightly confused. The YouTube website claims that the concert will start at 04:30 Irish Time (that is Monday morning!) but my calculations suggest that it will start at 03:30! You better check for yourself, I could be totally wrong! Either way you will have to get up VERY early. YouTube didn’t stream a full live concert until now and U2 didn’t make their full concert available before, so it is a new direction for both. www.u2.com/news/title/live-on-youtube-this-Sunday On You Tube you will be able to follow the concert via www.youtube.com/u2official

TICKET DISCOUNTS FOR CULTURAL EVENTS
Performing arts venues all around Ireland are making an attempt to promote the performing arts in Ireland. “Take Your Seat” is the name of a nationwide promotion aimed at encouraging people to attend performance art venues. The Take Your Seat promotion will run from 09-14 November and offers a great range of discounts, including free tickets and discount offers to shows around the country. Check www.takeyourseat.ie

MORE PUB TROUBLE
A new venue was added to my long list of closed pubs or pubs/nightclubs in trouble. During the week I was at the Irish Life Centre in Abbey Street and found out that Floridita, the once very popular Salsa Club, bar and restaurant, seems to be closed for some time already. I was in Floridita a few times and always liked the music, but found the admission charge of EUR 10 quite excessive. Searching a little further, I found out that it already closed in January. :-o As I said, I was there only a FEW times! :-) www.floridita.co.uk/dublin/

FOCUS IRELAND – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
A few weeks ago, I mentioned that Focus Ireland is looking for volunteers. Focus Ireland is a charity that helps homeless people and people in danger of becoming homeless. They provide services, supported housing and advice. On Fri 20 Nov their “Key to a Home” collection day is coming up and on that day volunteers are needed to sell key rings to get money for the organisation. I know this is NOT a good day for most of you because we have to work on that day, but in case you are available from 07:30-13:30 or from 13:30-19:30, please contact Joanne Ryan on 01-8815916 or email: joanneryan@focusireland.ie Focus Ireland needs another 200 volunteers for the day and there is only one month left. Maria H, a Dublin Event Guide Community Member, is one of the volunteers and asked me to mention the initiative again. www.focusireland.ie

SOUNDSCAPES
The Contemporary Music Centre (19 Fishamble Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 8) presents Soundscapes, a ten-day outdoor celebration in sound of the work of veteran Irish composer Roger Doyle, often described as ‘the Godfather of Irish electronic music’. Six different playlists spanning Doyle’s career across the last three decades will be broadcast each afternoon. www.cmc.ie

DEAF 2009
DEAF 2009 (Dublin Electronic Arts Festival) returns this year to various venues around Dublin city from 22-31 October 2009. A full timetable of events is here www.deafireland.com/2009/ and since the majority of events are completely free, you should definitely check it out. The number of events is huge and far beyond of what I can list in this newsletter. So I only picked two events (more or less at random) to describe them here:
# SOUNDSCAPES see description above
# IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK – THE JOINERY
Continuing with last year’s theme of re-interpreting the medium of video art and its context, this year’s ‘If these walls could talk’ exhibition at The Joinery as part of DEAF 2009 looks for the literal and conceptual presence of the walls and structures that define the urban environment and how space is re-used, recycled and re-invented. The show runs from 21-31 Oct. www.thejoinery.org

ZEALOTS – IN-STORE PERFORMANCE
The Zealots will perform in Tower Records in Wicklow Street on Thurs 22 Oct at 17:00. entertainment.ie/venue_information/Tower-Records/32057.htm

WRITING ABOUT THE NEW GERMANY – GOETHE INSTITUT

The discussion will be chaired by Karen Leeder, University of Oxford. The event is part of the conference “Re-Imagining the Nation? Transformations of German Cultural Identiy since 1989″ from 22 to 24 October 2009, which takes place at University College Dublin and the Goethe-Institut Irland.

RED LINE ROOTS MUSIC FESTIVAL
The Red Line Roots Festival will run from 22-25 Oct. It is a music festival that is spread across the three venues Sin E, the Dice Bar and The Cobblestone, which are all quite near to each other in the vicinity of Smithfield Plaza.. The music is a very interesting mixture of Blues, Country, Rock, Bluegrass with some Balkan Beats, Punk and Folk added to it. The website www.redlinefestival.com/ details the programme and if you want to hear some music samples and read lots of details about the bands go to www.myspace.com/redlinefestival. The gigs in The Cobblestone are not free, but all gigs in Sin E and the Dice Bar are completely free.
It is a pity that I will probably not be able to make it to any of the gigs, because I definitely would have liked to “try” the Red Line Roots Festival. I hope you will be able to give it a go. It is a great idea and a great initiative by the pubs involved. It would be great if more pubs came up with similarly good ideas!

SWINE FLU JUST A PHARMA-FRAUD?
On Monday I came across a very interesting article about the mass immunisation project in Germany against the H1N1 (Swine Flu) virus and after a long search I found a translation into English. The most interesting thing in my opinion is that the head of the “Drug Commission of the German Medical Association”, Prof. Dr. med. Wolf-Dieter Ludwig, seems to think that the alleged swine flu threat is not much more than a panic that has been created artificially and intentionally by the pharmaceutical industry to make a huge amount of money. There are many more concerns raised in this article about the safety of the vaccines and to make sure that you can consider all aspects, I suggest that you read it and then make up your own mind. On balance I have decided that I will not get any vaccination against a flu virus and I suggest you gather all available information so that you can make the decision that makes sense for you. www.thelocal.de/national/20091018-22649.html

You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
