Hi all!
I had mentioned that writing the Event Guide this week will be a challenge. I was more or less away until Tuesday and then had to work on a proposal in my day job and was busy in the evenings, so I am now starting with this week’s Event Guide and it is 22:35 on Thursday evening. If you go to the bottom of this mail, you will find out when I will get finished. :-)
The last week was sooo busy for me. I mentioned last week, that I would spend my time at a training course from Friday until Tuesday. Together with 37 other lovely people, we trained, practised, studied and learned from 09:00-21:00 for 5 days with additional work most days for the evening after the course. Tough? Yes! But hugely interesting, exciting and educational. And it was all worth it! Since Tuesday evening I am now qualified as a Master Practitioner of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), Master Results Coach, have a certificate in Master Hypnosis and in Advanced Neurological Repatterning and am certified as Performance Consultant. :-) Did I mention that the last few weeks were quite busy in my life? ;-) I entirely enjoyed the course and am looking forward to applying my skills to help people that are currently stuck in some aspects of their life and want to move to bigger and better things. Marc Aurelius said “If a thing is humanly possible, consider it to be within your reach!” and that is the approach you should take in life. Sometimes we need to clear the path from stones and fallen trees and other obstacles and that’s where coaches can provide the push that is needed. Because of all this time spent away from the day to day tasks, I wasn’t able to gather and collect snippets for the Dublin News and the “This is Odd!”, so all a bit shorter this week. Next week I hope to be back on track.

THE SECRET CASTLE OF MAGIC – TICKET COMPETITION
Castle Dracula & Sillybilly.ie present “The Secret Castle of Magic”. The ‘Secret Castle of Magic’ – a show for older kids and adults – is Ireland’s only Magic venue. There is only one public night per month and the next one is tonight. Tickets are EUR 12 (EUR 10) and children have to be at least 12 to be allowed in. MERCHANT OF VENICE – TICKET COMPETITION
The Dublin Shakespeare Society is performing “The Merchant of Venice” in the Teachers Club Theater, 36 Parnell Square West, Dublin 1 from 03-07 Nov (19:30). The play is directed by Savio Sequeira. It was written between 1596-1598 but the production is set in Mussolini’s Italy between 1933 and 1938; it was during this period that Mussolini passed a range of anti-Semitic laws causing great pain, suffering and hardship to the Jewish Community living in Italy at that time.

VAN CLEEF – SINGLE LAUNCH HALLOWEEN PARTY
Michael Teehan from the Rock/Pop/Indie band Van Cleef told me that the Lower Deck in Portobello will be the venue for a big Halloween Party on Sat 31 Oct. Van Cleef are launching their single on that evening and will perform on that evening together with guests The Gandhis & The Civilians. As I have explained in the introduction, I didn’t have time this week to gather news snippets for this section, so only one that I came across.
DUBLIN CITY TRAFFIC AND PARKING CHANGES
Only temporary plans are discussed, but the plans on the table are a big step in a new direction. It all seems to be driven by the fact that the shops in Dublin City report a loss of revenue of 30%. The plans are that the only recently introduced car ban at College Green, which got the stupid (and incorrect) name “Bus Gate” will be temporarily lifted from mid-November until mid-January. The second plan that will be discussed at the City Council Meeting on Monday seems to suggest the suspension of pay-and-display parking enforcement for the 15,000 car parking spaces in the City Centre from 14:00 on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in the pre-Christmas period. www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/1029/breaking64.htm
NEW PLANS FOR BALLSBRIDGE HOTELS
Sean Dunne, who had bought a massive site in Ballsbridge for EUR 450 million in 2005 before the building/development business went down the drain, had originally planned to knock down the three hotels “Jury’s Hotel”, “The Jury’s Tower” and the “Berkeley Court”. Just a few days before an auction for all the contents of the hotels was scheduled for, the decision was made to re-open the hotels while the planning application process runs. So in September 2007 they opened again as D4 Hotels with Ballsbridge Inn, Ballsbridge Towers and Ballsbridge Court as the respective names. Now the former Berkeley Court Hotel will be renamed from “Ballsbridge Court Hotel” into D4Berkeley and it is planned that the hotel will stay open for at least another 5 years. The plan was originally to build a 37 storey building on the site, but thankfully the planning application was refused. www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/0130/breaking25.htm Only now in October a new planning application was submitted. This time it seems that the development will be more in line with the surroundings and most buildings will only go up to 10 storeys.
LIBERTY HALL PLANS
It is not the newest news, so you might have heard about it before. SIPTU has revealed its plans for Liberty Hall. Many people don’t like the look of Liberty Hall and I can understand that to a certain degree. But the building has some nice features and is not really that ugly. Inside it “feels” very old and confined. Now SIPTU, the trade union that owns the building has decided to knock it down in 2011 and to replace it with a new 20-storey building. I wonder if the people that dislike the current Liberty Hall really like the new building more. I think it looks bland and uninteresting. www.irishconstruction.com/page/2389 So I am not sure if the existing iconic building is not better than the boring new one!?

Blaithin O’D informed me about an event in Donabate that she thought might be interesting to some of you. It is a Halloween Ghost/Horror walk for the Irish Wildlife trust in Turvey woods, Donabate on Fri 30 Oct (18:30-21:00). It doesn’t fully fulfil the “free events” criteria because there is a charge of EUR 3 that goes to the Irish Wildlife Trust, but for such a low price it might make sense to include it anyway.

Last chance: The Contemporary Music Centre (19 Fishamble Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 8) presents Soundscapes, a ten-day outdoor celebration in sound of the work of veteran Irish composer Roger Doyle, often described as ‘the Godfather of Irish electronic music’. The show runs from 22-31 Oct (12:00-16:00), as part of the DEAF Festival 2009. In an imaginative use of its 200-year old listed building in Fishamble Street, Temple Bar, the Contemporary Music Centre will create a dramatic outdoor sound gallery to play Doyle’s strikingly contemporary electronic and piano music from speakers located on the front of the building and in its enclosed rear courtyard. Six different playlists spanning Doyle’s career across the last three decades will be broadcast each afternoon. www.cmc.ie

RARE BUDDHIST RELICS – EXHIBITION
On 30, 31 Oct and 01 Nov a precious collection of sacred relics of the Buddha and many other Buddhist masters can be viewed at “Number 11″, 11 North Great George’s Street, Dublin 1. FRANCIS BACON CENTENARY EXHIBITION – 63 LWR BAGGOT STREET
As part of the celebrations surrounding the centenary of Francis Bacon’s birth, the Hugh Lane invites to ‘Francis Bacon: A Terrible Beauty’, an exhibition of rarely exhibited paintings by Bacon and photographs by John Deakin, Peter Beard and Eadweard Muybridge that will be on show at 63 Lower Baggot Street, Dublin 2 from 28 October 2009 to 07 March 2010. From 02-08 Nov the Design Week 2009 will take place in Dublin (and the rest of Ireland). “Design Week is a week long celebration of Irish and international design. Professor Noam Chomsky will receive a Honorary Life Membership of the UCD Law Society. At the event, Chomsky will take part in an open questions and answers session with the audience. Chomsky is an American linguist, philosopher, cognitive scientist, political activist and critic, author, and lecturer. “Adolf Mahr, Dublin Nazi No.1″ by Gerry Mullins is a lecture about Dr. Adolf Mahr who was Director of the National Museum of Ireland during the 1930s, but he was also Head of the Nazi Party in Ireland at the same time. TRY A DIVE – COOLMINE DIVING CLUB OPEN DAY
On Wed 04 Nov (from 19:30), the Coolmine Diving Club is inviting to an Open Day. The event is taking place in Coolmine Fitness Centre and you can go for a trial dive as part of it. All you need to bring is your swim suit and everything else will be provided. “Try a dive” means you get to try all the diving equipment as though you were going to dive in the sea. The only difference is that it is done in a completely controlled environment in a swimming pool. Any training necessary will be given on the night and no previous diving experience is necessary. NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION
The trade union will protest on Fri 06 Nov at 14:30 at Parnell Square. They claim “The ICTU campaign for a ‘Social Solidarity Pact’ to include job creation, job protection, an economic stimulus package and opposition to pay and welfare cuts and pension protection, is now gathering momentum.” But I just don’t get who they target with their protest. Is it the government? Then how will strikes/work stoppages help to get the country into a more competitive position? Or is it big businesses? But will they perform better when the employees refuse to work? Sure nobody likes cuts, but if the money is not available it has to be taken from some where. The only other option is to protest against certain cost, but the ICTU campaign seems to be a blanket approach with no suggestions for solutions and with no specific focus. Maybe someone wants to explain it to me?

The National College or Ireland is bringing the “Legends in your Lunchtime” series back by popular demand. CAFE CULTURE PROJECT – CONFERENCE
Emer Burton told me about the Café Culture Project, which invites to a conference entitled “Promoting Dublin Café Culture” on Fri 13 Nov 2009 in the Mansion House, Dawson Street, Dublin 2 (10:0013:00). Admission is free, but places are limited so you have to register via cafeculture@googlegroups.com.
The aim of the conference is to promote and celebrate café culture in all its diversity, and to support cafés that contribute to the social, cultural and business life of the city.

RHA LECTURE SERIES, DUBLIN
The Royal Hibernian Academy is inviting to a series of lectures by the RHA’s artist Members and Honorary Members. There are a limited number of spaces available on selected lectures before Christmas. The lectures still with availability are:

RDS SCIENCE LECTURE
RDS Irish Times Boyle Medal Conferral & Public Lecture entitled “From Passion to Practical Benefits: Why it’s Great Being a Scientist” is taking palce on Mon 16 Nov at 19:00 in the RDS Concert Hall in Ballsbridge. The 37th Boyle Medal will be presented to Professor Luke O’Neill (TCD) and his lecture will cover everything from his pioneering work on innate immunity and inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis to his passion for science. RDS DARWIN LECTURE
The RDS has a very interesting free public lecture coming up:
The RDS Darwin200 Public Lecture: “Fragile Web, What Next for Nature?” will take place on Tues 24 November in the RDS Concert Hall at 19:00. In celebration of Darwin200 and to mark the 150th anniversary of the publication of ‘The Origin of Species’ by Charles Darwin, the RDS has invited Professor Jonathan Silvertown who will be speaking on the matter of biodiversity. This lecture marks the fourth in the series of RDS Irish Times ‘Ireland in 2030’ lectures which aims to look at the serious long-term challenges that face us today. ALCOHOL AND IRELAND
Maybe you followed the current debate about the reduction of the max alcohol level for motorists. In the whole EU only the UK (0.08) and Malta (0.09) have a similar or higher permissible blood alcohol level and with that in mind, the Department of Transport is intending to reduce the blood alcohol content (BAC) limit from 80mg to 50mg per 100ml. I know, that means that if you drive you can not risk drinking alcohol, but considering the dangers of drunken driving, I think it makes sense. But what madness obsessed 18 TDs (members of the parliament) and 3 Senators to sign a petition against a reduction!? Isn’t it odd that Alcohol is so important in Ireland that drinking is more important than driving safely? Sure, a reduction will have to result in a cultural shift away from pubs, but maybe it is time for that? Where would you go if you want to get a coffee after 20:00 at the moment? Would it not make sense to have a number of cafes that open until late like Café Moda in Rathmines? I would like that!
